Ha.f-i e.r.fi .... ."q.f .. ....8b e".....He"a.r-f,

\- Even thongh we all belong to a clubwirich is orleuted towards one makeand one model of ar.itomobile (HenryrsLady) I am sure each and every olle ofris iras a soft spot in our heart for acar other than a Model A.This seconcl love may be a car that

we now owll, have owned or have alwaysdreamed of owninqt. In my case it isthe 34 rord - Just lilte the one qrall-pa broke an axle on in r48 tllenparked otit by ti:e barn and never gotarottncl to f i>:iug.

In Bob Joile's case it's an Essextirat he oltce owned. Bob related thestory of that car and his fondmemories to me last meeting. I'dlike to share it with everybody forsurely memories sttch as tirese arepriceless gem-s , Bob I hope you donttmind.

The story starLs in '48 (PoPularyear) at a car lot next to Jeniriuqsantomotive oir Reyitolds street. Theyhad just recieved a 30's Essex whichl:ad l:e1oi:ged to the proverbial litileold Lady. Bob sa'* lhe car just efterthey got it and noticed that theI:eadliner irad a sl:eet pinned to ltfor protection,Lhe maLs had paperover them (especially welI wrappedand taped aroltird the accelerator andother pedals ) the seats had hadcovers oil thent since new and even therunning boards had irad paper tapedover them fo:: protection.

Tire right rear tire had just beenput on the ground after havingresided i-n the spare tire positionsince new. (This was easY to tellsince it. st1ll had a paper wraPPingon it ! ) Naturally Bob feI} in lovewith it and bought tire car.

Now, that is really iust thel:egrinning of the story as Bob tellsit. The car irad the Essex Eiqht andgobs of powerr especially off of tireIine. Bob, jttsl a tad bit Youngerthen, really had fuu sportiug aboutar:d occaslonally itidulging in al1tt1e street racing. The real fttnsays Bob were matches against hisfriend iu his sl:inlr new 47 GMproduct. one such race carried thetwo across the bridge to BeechIsland. The bridge was just twoIai:es lhen aitd at the rate tirey weregolng it probakily needed to be more.It seems the CirevY didn' t cornerquite as well as the Esse:< so it leftquite an impresslon on the guard railas it rounded the corner going ont, othe bridge Bob says you can sti1l seeit in fact. The Essex however justkj.nd of hunkered Cown and qrI:-dedaround the curve. Bob does admlt hisfrlend would take irim on tl:e top etldhowever if the stretch they were onwas 1oi:g euougir | .

To tiris day nob has never seenanotirer Essex like that one,an]ryvhere, but l:e keeps looking solet's hope that one day he sees oneand maybe just by a long shot it willbe tirat very cne !
