Themonthlymeetingof theShadeTreeA'swasheld January13,2020 intheclubhousemeetingroom at Richard Dunevent’s garage. PresidentMatt brought themeeting to order at 6:55 P.M.Nineteenmemberswereinattendance.Treasurer'sReport:Dan Perla reported our treasury basicallyremains the same as last reported with only a$17.00changeinthepositive.Healsoannouncedonly 31members had paid their 2020memberdues.AmotionwasmadefromthefloortoaccepttheTreasurer'sReportandtheNovemberMinutesaspublished in The Newsletter. That motionreceivedasecondandpassedbyunanimousvote.NationalDirector:Jim McPherson reported he has received arequestfromMAFFIforadonation.Noactionwastaken as to a response. Unfortunately, Jim alsoannounced his resignation asNational Director.Several members praised his long-timecommitmentandservicetoTheShadeTreeA’s.NewsletterEditor:Robbie Jones complimented President Matt forbeingfirsttosubmithisnewsletterarticleabouthowhebecameinterestedintheModelAhobby.Robbieencouragedotherstoalsosubmitarticlestobepublishedunder“YouandYourModelA”.UnderShow&Tell:AndrewMorsedisplayeda“blown”airbagsayingthey only take 1/10th of a second to deploy onimpact.AccordingtoAndrew,theydeploybywayofnitrogenpellets.Veryinteresting!

UnderOldBusiness:President Matt reminded the group of ourplanned tour to River’s Bridge State Park onMay2nd.Heisexpectingmembersfromseveralother clubs to attend due to the destinationbeingcentrallylocated,HopefullytheSavannah,Aiken, Charleston, Ninety-six and Columbiaclubswillparticipate.EricShogreninvitedalltojointheAikenA’sforlunch on Saturday, February 15th in RidgeSpring, S.C.meeting at Juniper’sRestaurant at11:00AMUnderNewBusiness:Duetoseveralmembersresigningfromofficesto which they were elected last fall, thosepositionshavebeenfilledasfollows:

DanPerlaalsoaskedforvolunteers interestedinbecomingourWebmaster.DanisplanningtostepdowninMarch.TechnicalProgram:EricShogrenconductedthetechnicalprogram.Ericdiscussed theuseof severaloriginalK.R.WilsontoolsthatRobbieJonesusedrecentlytorebuildtherearaxleinhisCoupe.Thetoolsareusedtoremove(andinstall)thedriveshaftandpinion gear from the differential housingwithout disturbing the preload on the pinionbearing. Another tool is used to remove thepiniongearfromthedriveshaft.
Eric alsohadonhand specialwrenchesused toadjust the pinion bearing preload. Of specialinterest to everyone was the humongous pipewrench thatErichas to turn thepinionbearingremovaltool.A discussion and question and answer sessionfollowedonavarietyoftopicssuchastheuseofairfiltersoncarburetors,effectofcarburetorjetsize on engine performance and problemswithreproductionignitionpointsTherebeingnofurtherbusiness,themeetingwasadjourned at 7:30PMafterwhich refreshmentsprovidedby JimandSheilaMcPhersonandDanPerla,wereenjoyedbyall.(Special thanks to Robbie Jones for covering Eric’spresentation.)

According to the manufacturer, you nolongerhavetocrawlunderyourModelAtocheckyour transmission fluid levels. Thiskitcomeswithacoverforyourfloorboardsand a template on where to place yourinspectionplate.Youcanpurchasethiskitfrom just about all the parts suppliers oryoucanmakeyourown.Youwillneeda3/4"x6"steelnippleanda3/4" steel cap. Drill a 9/32" hole in thecenterofyourcap.Youwilluseanenginedipstick and push it all theway into yourcap and make sure the dipstick onlyprotrudes 1/2" out the other end. Use athread locking compound on thetransmissionendtopreventthepipenipplefrombackingoutwhenyouremovethepipecap. Youwill be able to check your fluidswithoutgettingundercar.(If thread locking compounddoesn'twork, tryusinga3/4” electrical conduitnutasa locknuton thetransmissionendtokeepthepipefromturningwhenremovingthepipecap.Ed.)
