B’chol Dor Vador / בכל דור ודור

(Hebrew text: Passover Haggadah; English text: Elana Arian and Noah Aronson)

In every generation, it is our duty to consider ourselves as if we had come forth from Egypt.

B'chol dor vador khayavim anu lir'ot et atzmeynu k'ilu yatzanu mimitzrayim.

בכל דור ודור חיבים אנו לאות את עצמנו כאלו יצאנו ממצים

Can you picture yourself crossing through and wandering the desert? Can you feel the wind support you as you go?

Do you hear the cries of those left behind still hoping for tomorrow? Do you fear the mountains you still have to climb?

If [God] had brought us out from Egypt, it would have been enough for us!

Ilu hotzianu mimitzrayim—

Dayeinu! אלו הוציאנו ממצים

דינו

I know a vast sea between shore and shore

dividing mortar from the vine; the slave sings her freedom on her far bank

legions of Pharaoh drowned within.

But another sea I also know

dividing men from women self from home or self from self

creation from ineffability — One side, perhaps, not entirely narrow

the other, not fully yours or not promised.

Amidst the drowned multitudes this sea has her inhabitants,

gazing green and salt to dry and assured land surrounding

a flashing brow uplifted.

Who ordains impassable? One may cross;

equally stretch out an arm.

The journey toward self reveals it, this to the redeemed long known:

None may hinder the way that God has parted.

— Reuben Zellman, B’chol L’vav’cha: With All Your Heart pg.93

LGBTQ-Centered Four Children, Reimagined Today CRRI Deborah Megdal

As LGBTQ Jews, we have come a long way -- from a time when our questions were primarily about coming out and acceptance (of course still relevant today), to a time when many (but importantly, not all) of us can be more self-reflective and self-confident as we walk through the world. We have new questions, new fears, new joys, and new struggles.

There are four internal narratives, among many, that echo within the LGBTQ person:

The Wise Narrative is aware that our double history of discrimination as Jewish and LGBTQ people, and perhaps especially our history of exclusion from the Jewish world, has taught us how to live and grow in community with heightened urgency and renewed commitment.

● This narrative is growth-centered, and so its response is in the fruitful ways to continue building strength in ourselves and our communities. ● How can we engage with the larger world, and also live as Jews nourishing the treasures of our own tradition?

The Self-Hating Narrative is a cacophony of internalized anti-Semitism, homophobia, queerphobia, and transphobia. Even when the world seemingly tilts towards acceptance, we can surely do ourselves as much harm as others can do to us. The stories we have heard from our childhood about sin and expectation have not been forgotten; there are times when their rotten edges emerge within us. When we turn against each other with in-fighting and compete over whose oppression is greater, we tear each other down, and in the end, we all suffer.

● The response is a reminder of God’s unending love, and the charge that we should model ourselves after that -- for our most pronounced identity is that we are all created in the image of God. ● What work do we need to do on ourselves in order to be comfortable as who we are?

The Self-Limiting Narrative is that my LGBTQ identity is all that I have to offer. My voice is always “the gay perspective” or “the token trans person” in the room. People are interested in knowing me because I am exotic. My best chances for opportunity (professional and personal) require that I accept this and run with it.

● The response is a reminder that however central our LGBTQ identity is, we are all more than our labels. ● In what sense are we enslaved by the words that we use to define ourselves? How can we learn how to walk in the world as the beautifully complicated and multi-faceted people that we are?

The _________ Narrative is that I am _________________________________________. ● Setting aside defined space for the individual experience invites an expression of what is in our heart at this moment. What is in your heart? ● To one who does not have a narrative to offer, the response is reassurance that it is okay to try on different narratives to see what feels most authentic.

I want to preach this morning from the subject: “The Birth of a New Nation.” And I would like to use as a basis for our thinking together a story that has long since been stenciled on the mental sheets of succeeding generations. It is the story of the Exodus, the story of the flight of the Hebrew people from the bondage of Egypt, thorugh the wilderness, and finally, to the promised land. It’s a beautiful story. I had the privilege the other night of seeing the story in movie terms in New York City, entitled the “Ten Commandments,”a nd I came to see it in all of its beauty – the struggle of Moses, the struggle of his devoted followers as they sougtht to get out of Egypt. And they final moved on to the wilderness and toward the promised land. This is something of the story of every people struggling for freedom.

PRAYER for OUR COUNTRY Source of all Life, Guide our leaders with righteousness, Strengthen their hearts,

but keep them from hardening. That they may use their influence and authority to

speak truth and act for justice (Isaiah 16:3-5). May all who dwell in this country

share in its bounty, enjoy its freedoms, and be protected by its laws.

May this nation use its power and wealth to be a voice for justice, peace, and equality for all who dwell on earth.

May we be strong and have courage To be bold in our action and deep in our compassion, To discern when we must listen and when we must act, To uproot bigotry, intolerance, misogyny, racism,

discrimination, and violence in all its forms, To celebrate the many faces of God reflected

in the wondrous diversity of humanity, To welcome the stranger and the immigrant

and to honor the gifts of those who seek refuge and possibility here, as they have since

before this nation was born.

Let justice well up like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream (Amos 5:24)
