PARSHA MATTERS - by Rabbi Sammy Bergman THE BATTLE FOR TRUE PEACETHE BATTLE FOR TRUE PEACETHE BATTLE FOR TRUE PEACETHE BATTLE FOR TRUE PEACE

Our current political discourse often sounds like Colour War. It’s almost impossible to listen to the news without getting the impression that the story is being martialed to advance the cause of a particular ideology and weaken the opposing party. One constantly gets bombarded with the notion that it’s “US” versus “THEM,” and WE must win the battle at all costs.

It has become incredibly challenging to express a viewpoint one feels strongly about without getting sucked into the toxic climate. It’s tempting to withhold our opinions altogether. However, I believe that our parsha oKers a diLcult but important approach to voicing our opinions when we strongly disagree with others. Hashem extols Pinchas for his courage and zeal in killing Zimri, a prince from the tribe of Shimon, and Casbi, a Midianite princess, as they were engaged in a public act of licentiousness and the desecration of God’s name. However, considering that he had just killed two people, Pinchas receives a perplexing reward for his courage: a “covenant of peace” and a “covenant of eternal priesthood” (Bamidbar 25:12-13. Why was a violent act rewarded with two covenants which seem diametrically opposed to violence?

To answer this question, it’s worth reflecting on our perspective toward zealotry in general. Instinctively, we shudder at the prospect of violence in the name of religion. We therefore find it troubling that Pinchas was praised so vigorously for his zealotry. But the truth is, the Sages had a more complicated perspective. In fact the Jerusalem Talmud (Sanhedrin Chapter 9) states that Pinchas’s actions were “against the will of the Sages,” and they would have punished Pinchas had it not been for the Divine Spirit which overtook Pinchas and proclaimed: “and he and his oKspring after him will have the covenant of the eternal priesthood” (Bamidbar 25:13). Similarly, when Eliyahu HaNavi, a figure associated with Pinchas, slaughters the false prophets of Baal and proclaims that he has been “jealous for God” (Melachim I Chapter 19), Hashem appoints Elisha as a prophet to replace him (ibid.). This begs the questions, why did Hashem react so diKerently to Pinchas?

If we examine the context of Pinchas’s act carefully, I believe we can arrive at an answer. Pinchas witnessed several calamities befalling the Jewish people. As a punishment for their idolatry and debauchery, the Jews were suKering from a plague that ultimately killed 24,000 people (Bamidbar 25:9). Just as Moshe ordered the judges of Israel to punish those who had sinned and caused the plague (25:5), Zimri defied both God and Moshe Rabbeinu and performed a horrific sin right in front of their eyes. Moshe and his judges were shocked into passivity and stood by the entrance to the Mishkan with tears in their eyes. Pinchas realized that if he didn’t act at that moment, the Jewish nation might never recover. His act of zealotry was performed out of concern for both the name of God and the Jewish people. In fact, Hashem stated clearly that He rewarded Pinchas for “removing My wrath from the Children of Israel.”

In contrast, although Eliyahu certainly acted in the name of God, his zealotry didn’t positively impact the Jewish people. Hashem doesn’t want the leaders of Israel to use zealotry as a general approach to leadership. Instead, as the Malbim says: “God sends his prophets to come to them with a soft voice, and attract the nation with chains of love and delicate words.”

In this vein, we can appreciate the “covenant of peace” Pinchas was rewarded with. Rabbi Shimshon Raphael Hirsch explains that true peace can’t be accomplished by those who for the sake of peace: “leave the field to people who are really at variance with God.” When people cause problems, allowing them to persist isn’t “keeping the peace.” We must speak out against immorality and injustice. But the purpose of our battle needs to be for the sake of both God and humanity. We don’t voice our opinions to defeat those who disagree with us. We voice our opinions with the best intentions for all of society when we feel that we can contribute to accomplishing a just, and true peace. May we have the wisdom and sensitivity to wage war against all forms of immorality and injustice, and participate in the eKort to bring true peace to the world.
