This year we mark an event we will

not experience for another 70,000

years: Chanukah and anksgiving

celebrated together. is gives us the opportunity to recognize

an integral connection between these two special holidays.

While anksgiving gives us the opportunity to express

profound appreciation for all of our blessings, Chanukah

provides us the chance to realize that we stand on the shoulders

of our ancestors. We are so grateful to the ancient Maccabees

and their ability to confront the oppression and cruelty

perpetuated by King Antiochus and the Syrian-Greeks in the

year 165 BCE.

Fighting against foreign domination, a band of Jews led by

Mattathias took to the hills of Judea in revolt against the Se-

leucid empire. Antiochus sent thousands of well-prepared and

heavily armed troops to the Land of Israel to crush the

rebellion. Mattathias son Judah, along with his followers, drove

the Syrian-Greeks from their land, and most importantly, from

the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. en, upon the re-

dedication of the Temple, the chieftains of the twelve tribes

brought gifts to express gratitude to God.

In the same spirit our forbearers illustrated, it is appropri-

ate at this season to offer thanks to God for our peoples mirac-

ulous deliverance, for the heroism, and for the battle victo

of our ancestors who were defending their beliefs and their

ligion for all time. is is the reason that Chanukah cannot

merely about receiving presents, but about giving

ourselves to others.

It has been a longstanding custom in our family to writ

tzedakah check each night to a different organizati

immediately following our lighting of the Chanukiyah. is a

serves to remind us that Chanukah is not merely abo

receiving gifts, but even more, it is about sincerely expressi

our personal and familial gratitude for each of our blessings

During this holiday of lights, I pray that each of us brin

increased light into the world by making a strong stateme

that giving charity is not optional: it is an obligation! Of cour

not only should we give money, but whenev

possible, we should give our time. Assisting worthwh

community organizations that rely on volunteers is truly pric

less, for in so doing, we involve ourselves in the global respo

sibility of Tikkun Olam healing the world.

The days are short and the nights are

long, but this is the season of light. Of

course, we celebrate this yearas some

are calling itanksgivukkah: one of the

rare times in history when Chanukah and

anksgiving coincide. So this year, more than any other year,

Chanukah falls when the nights are at their absolute longest. Withgreat celebration each of us will light our Chanukiyah (Chanukah

menorahs), and bring light into the darkness. We will then fulfill

the Chanukah mitzvah ofpirsumei nisa, publicly proclaiming Gods

miracles by displaying the lights of the Chanukiyah in our windows

for all to see. is is the holiday we Jews are commanded, quite

literally, to bring light into the world.

In truth, however, we are at all times commanded to bring light

into the world. Speaking for God, the prophet Isaiah informs us, It

is insufficient that you be a servant for Me [only] I will make you

a light for the nations (or lagoyim), so that My salvation may extend

to the ends of the earth (Isaiah 49:6). God has brought the Jewi

people into this world, and blessed us with immeasurable blessin

that we might represent and testify to Gods greatness by o

actions. More specifically, God demands that we go out into t

world to care for those in need and to right the injustices that ex

We are, in word and deed, to teach and bring justice and righteo

ness to all the nations of the world. Like the Chanukiyah in twindow, the Jewish people must bring light into the world.

We live in dark times. e weather is cold, the nights are lo

and those who suffer do so the most at this time of year. And,

addition to the physical suffering, there are those who suff

spiritually. May this season of light encourage us to deepen o

commitment to bringing light. is year, especially, Congregati

Shaarey Zedek is offering a variety of opportunities to fulfill t

important mitzvah.
