He amazed our students with his mathemacal ability and useful ps and inspired a renewed passion for the subject. He explained how creavity could be used to derive the correct answer by demonstrang different creave methods. He presented 3 problems on the topics of solving for area and length, allowed students to aempt the problems and then uncovered the steps and correct answers to them. His explanaon engendered much discussion and awe in our students. In his discussion on Openness, Eddie Woo asked students to form shapes out of 5 squares and demonstrated what the different shapes could have been. Students reported that they “enjoyed looking at problems in a different way” and “he made it easy and fun.” Even the non-Maths teachers who were present said that “Eddie Woo was inspiraonal” and they “never thought (they) could understand the concepts he was discussing so easily.” The Deputy Principal, Jennie Dalamagas tweeted, “Strathfield Girls were greatly inspired by the wonderful Eddie Woo. His amazing presentaon evoked a passion for Mathemacs in our students.” It is no wonder that this year, in 2018, Eddie Woo was awarded Australia’s Local Hero. Week 7 A Term 4 2018

Eddie Woo inspires SGHS The Australian mathematician, Eddie Woo, who is best known for his YouTube

channel, WooTube and his book entitled Woo’s Wonderful World of Maths, visited

Strathfield Girls High School on Thursday, 22 November 2018.

He amazed our students with his mathematical ability and useful tips and inspired a

renewed passion for the subject.

Eddie focused on two different concepts – Creativity and Openness to help students

to solve Maths problems. He explained how creativity could be used to derive the

correct answer by demonstrating different creative methods. He presented 3

problems on the topics of solving for area and length, allowed students to attempt

the problems and then uncovered the steps and correct answers to them. His

explanation engendered much discussion and awe in our students.

In his discussion on Openness, Eddie Woo asked students to form shapes out of 5

squares and demonstrated what the different shapes could have been.

Students reported that they “enjoyed looking at problems in a different way” and

“he made it easy and fun.” Even the non-Maths teachers who were present said that

“Eddie Woo was inspirational” and they “never thought (they) could understand the

concepts he was discussing so easily.”

The Deputy Principal, Jennie Dalamagas tweeted, “Strathfield Girls were greatly

inspired by the wonderful Eddie Woo. His amazing presentation evoked a passion for

Mathematics in our students.”

It is no wonder that this year, in 2018, Eddie Woo was awarded Australia’s Local

Hero. He indeed makes a huge difference to thousands of students.
