Introduction

Herpes has been around since the time of the ancient Greeks (at least!) but in the last 20-30 years it's ballooned into a real – but underground – epidemic.

The CDC (Center for Disease Control) estimates that in the USA alone, 1 in 6 people between the ages of 14 and 49 have genital herpes – and the vast majority are not aware they have it. That's right, it's absolutely possible to have herpes and not know it and then infect a partner, without either of them realising that there's a risk. Add to that the shame and stigma that most of us feel about having herpes, and you'll agree that the CDC may even be under-estimating the number of people who have herpes.

The main thing to take away from this, though, is that you are not alone. If you're in a room with 30 people, then chances are that 5 of them will have herpes, maybe without knowing it... or maybe they are suffering too, from pain, and shame, and worry.

Here's what the CDC website has to say about herpes, and it's probably exactly what your doctor has already told you:

“There is no cure for herpes. Antiviral medications can, however, prevent or shorten outbreaks during the period of time the person takes the medication. In addition, daily suppressive therapy (i.e. daily use of antiviral medication) for herpes can reduce the likelihood of transmission to partners.”

Now, I'm not going to get into the debate about “no cure for herpes”, not here in this report, anyway. We'll agree that herpes simplex is a stealth virus that hides out in your spinal nerves where it can't be reached by most anti-viral treatments. That said, there's absolutely no reason we have to accept the “cure is impossible” dogma – not unless you are a big




pharmaceutical company (or in their pockets) making a killing selling drugs to manage symptoms of chronic conditions instead of fixing them. Whether or not there is a real cure for herpes, we do know that there are natural remedies, far safer than Acyclovir and other drugs doctors will prescribe for you, that are proven to be as effective or more in reducing herpes outbreaks (sometimes to zero) and helping to heal the lesions.

And let's face it, if you're in the middle of an outbreak, clearing up the painful symptoms is going to be your top priority.

Alright, so let's start there, and look at some of the best natural treatments to heal and soothe herpes lesions when they appear. Then we'll go on to look at some of the exciting research on plant-derived compounds that can stop the herpes virus from replicating and prevent outbreaks. Some of these viral antidotes can also reduce the risk of passing on HSV to a partner, which is super good news for your romantic life!



Zinc – Immune supercharger

Zinc is super-important for your health – it's more than just a roofing material!

In it's organic form it's used, one molecule at a time, in the structure of hundreds of different enzymes that keep your body functioning properly. But zinc's most critical role in the body is keeping your white blood cell count healthy and generally boosting immune function and wound healing. In fact, you may already have heard about using zinc for herpes, because this is one remedy that most doctors agree can be effective.

So how does zinc help with herpes?

In the laboratory, zinc has been found to have a specific deactivating effect on both HSV-1 and HSV-2.

Does this translate into a clinical effect on herpes?





Well, several research studies have been done, mostly using a solution of zinc sulfate in different concentrations in distilled water, which gets swabbed onto the herpes lesions using various protocols.

Early studies used very weak solutions of zinc sulfate, i.e. 0.025% and 0.05%, to prevent any irritation. In these cases the zinc solution was applied 6-8 times per day, and was effective in reducing recurrences as well as relieving the acute symptoms.

One later study used a stronger zinc solution and had no problems reported. They used a topical application of 4% zinc sulfate on active herpes lesions, and found that for every one of the 18 patients they were treating, the pain, burning and tingling were reported to be gone within 24 hours.

More recently a study in 2013 found that a 4% solution was more effective than a weaker solution (1% and 2%) with no troublesome side-effects. They found that in the 4% treatment group, only 1 of the 30 patients had any recurrences of herpes breakouts, whereas in the control group treated only with distilled water, 8 out of 10 of them had recurrences. That's pretty impressive!

Here is the protocol they used:

Zinc sulfate solution was prepared fresh by dissolving measured amounts of zinc sulfate powder (commercially available as 100% crystalline powder) in distilled water to make three concentrations, i.e., 1%, 2% and 4%. After cleaning the lesions with distilled water, an ear bud soaked in the zinc solution was applied on lesions for 5 min and then the lesions were again cleaned with distilled water.

The protocol was to apply topical zinc sulfate on the first visit, then after every 5 days for 1 month, followed by every 10 days for 2 months and then after every 15 days for 3 months for the total period of 6 months.

You can buy zinc sulfate quite cheaply, and make your own zinc solution and apply it as they did in the study. But you might want to get your zinc in a more convenient form...

Other ways to use zinc for herpes

Zinc is available for topical application in a number of cream formulations. The most common one is zinc oxide – used very widely for nappy rash, minor wound healing, and as a sunscreen, because it sits on the surface of the skin and does not dissolve in water. Unfortunately this quality makes it almost useless in treating herpes – you need the zinc to get through your skin and to the virus.

If you like the idea of using a cream, the best one to get is zinc sulfate, and this is the only one I have found online:

Be careful about using it on an open lesion as it may sting. Any stinging should only be temporary, but test on a small area first to make sure.

Zinc as a nutritional supplement

Zinc is available in several different forms as a nutritional supplement. The cheapest forms of zinc supplement use inorganic forms of zinc – zinc oxide, zinc sulfate, zinc gluconate – which aren't absorbed or used by your body very well. Most natural health practitioners will advise you to forget about these cheaper types of zinc, and instead use organic chelates, for example zinc orotate and zinc picolinate.

A good brand of zinc supplement should also include a small amount of copper (1/10 the dose of zinc is recommended) and usually other nutrients as well, such as vitamin C and perhaps some vitamin B complex. These extra ingredients are co-factors which are used with zinc by your immune system, and will give your zinc supplement extra oomph!

Lemon Balm – Power from the PastLemon Balm – or Melissa officialis, to give it its botanical name – is a traditional herbal remedy that can be used for a whole host of ailments. It's probably best known for being a great anti-anxiety herb that has a calming effect without being overly sedative. This on its own makes lemon balm worth including in your arsenal – but there's more...

We now know that lemon balm is a potent anti-viral, reported to destroy HSV in the lab, and to have significant clinical benefit against HSV-1 and HSV-2 – both oral and genital herpes. Scientists have not isolated the active ingredient, but lemon balm contains a number of polyphenols, terpenes and tannins that are known anti-viral agents, and probably work synergistically against the herpes virus.

For a topical remedy, lemon balm salve is known as a super-effective treatment for cold sores, and now it's also beginning to get known as effective for genital herpes. With its de-stressing properties added to the specific anti-viral action, lemon balm is a wonderful double whammy against herpes. And besides all that, it has a lovely lemony scent that gets you feeling better at the first whiff!




Where to get lemon balm

Lemon balm is very easy to grow. You may even have it growing wild in your garden – it's that common! If you don't already have it growing, it's easy to find... check out the herb section in your local nursery.

Chances are, though, you want to get started right now, without having to wait for a supply in your backyard. In that case, you can buy the dried herb at most health stores or online. It's sold as a tea, but it's more economical to buy in bulk, if you want to make your own infusion or cream.

You could also get pure Melissa essential oil. The essential oil is not cheap, but you only need a tiny bit of it to be effective. A less expensive option is to get the essential oil already diluted in jojoba oil. This can be used straight from the bottle, or added to your home-made cream or salve for extra potency.

How to use lemon balm for herpes

Lemon balm can be used internally or externally, in several different ways.

Lemon balm tea

For internal use, lemon balm herb can be made into a tea which is very helpful for stress and anxiety, and as a general tonic. It's specially good for that wound-up feeling that stops you getting to sleep at night. The tea is also good as a general preventative anti-viral treatment, when taken regularly.

If you prefer, you can get lemon balm tincture, which can be made into a tea by adding a few drops to a cup of water.

Water infusion for external use

The dried herb can also be made into a stronger infusion, which can be used externally to bath cold sores or genital lesions. Here's how:

Take a large glass jar and fill it 2/3 with fresh lemon balm leaves, or 1/3 with dried herb. Fill the jar with boiling water and let it stand for around 4 hours. This extra steeping time will extract more of the active compounds – those polyphenols, terpenes and tannins which have the anti-viral action.

When it's cool, strain through a fine cloth (panty-hose works well for this, or knee-hi stockings which fit snugly over a wide jar) and then store in a cool place until you want to use it. An infusion like this without any preservatives will only stay fresh for a few days, but you can extend its life by keeping it in the refrigerator.

You can use this infusion to bathe lesions or areas of possible outbreak, either applied directly with cotton wool or a gauze pad, or used in a sitz bath – a large shallow bowl that you sit in, so as to reach the entire area affected by outbreaks.

The infusion can also be used to make a lemon balm cream (see directions in next section).

Melissa essential oil

Essential oils are generally made by steam distillation (not something you can do at home) and they are great if you want the volatile plant oils for fragrance or aromatherapy. It takes a lot of plant material to make just a small amount of essential oil, so it's expensive – but a little bit goes a long way.

Here is a high quality melissa essential oil, diluted in jojoba oil so that it is ready to use – and less expensive. Like the infusion, this can be applied directly to a lesion or area that feels as though it is about to break out.

You can also add a few drops of this to a home-made lemon balm cream, to give extra potency and fragrance.

Oil infusion

An oil infusion is different from melissa essential oil. Most herbalists prefer an oil infusion to the essential oil for use on the skin, as the process of infusion will extract the active compounds from the whole plant. An oil infusion is more stable, and less likely to cause skin reactions. It's also way less expensive, as you need less plant material to produce an effective oil.

The downside is that ready-made oil infusions are not widely available, so you will have to make it yourself.






How to make an oil infusion of lemon balm

If you're not in a hurry, you can make a “cold” infusion, leaving your brew in warm sunshine or other warm place for 3-6 weeks. However, there is also a “hot” method that only takes a few hours. I'll describe both.

You can use fresh or dried herb to make an oil infusion, but the dried herb is easier to use – the fresh leaves contain moisture that increases the risk of mold.

Take a glass jar of whatever size you want to use, and fill it halfway with dried herb (or three-quarters with fresh). The dried herb will expand, and you need to make sure it stays entirely covered by the oil so as to avoid mold. Cover the herb with your chosen oil: virgin olive oil is good, as it won't go rancid, and it has healing properties in its own right. However, some people find the smell unpleasant, and prefer alternatives such as almond oil (a nice light oil to use on the skin and with good keeping properties) or jojoba oil (also lovely to use, and very stable, but more expensive).

For the sun infusion, just cover the jar and leave in the sun for 3-6 weeks. When it's done, the leaves will appear translucent and faded, indicating that the active compounds have been extracted into the oil.

Here's how to made a hot infusion:

You'll need a double-boiler for this, or you can improvise with a glass bowl or jug suspended in a pan of water on the stove. Heat the water to boiling, and turn down the heat very low to keep the oil hot.

Add the oil and herb to the bowl, and let it heat gently. You will want about 6-8 oz oil for 1 cup of dried herb. Stir well and keep it at low heat for an hour or two, then turn off the heat and let it stand in a warm place for several hours or overnight, to let more of the plant oils be extracted.

You can also do this step in the oven, using a heat-proof dish and very low heat. Or use a crock-pot, or a yoghourt maker – something that will keep the oil warm but not too hot.




How to make a lemon balm healing cream

A cream is a mixture of oils or fats, and a water-based component. This combination allows the cream to be absorbed through your skin, and hence the active ingredients are able to get right to the cells where the virus is trying to take over. For superior penetration you want to make sure your cream contains natural ingredients that are easily absorbed, and is not based on mineral oil, eg petroleum jelly, which just sits on the surface of your skin.

In order to get the oil and the water to mix, we need an emulsifying agent, and the one we are going to use is beeswax. First, beeswax is a totally natural substance, and second, it has healing properties of its own. It also acts as a thickener in the cream – you can vary the amount to make your cream thicker or thinner.

It's very easy to make your own, and that way you know what's in the cream.

Ingredients:

6 oz virgin olive oil or lemon balm infused oil

2 oz virgin unprocessed coconut oil

1 oz natural beeswax (it should be yellow-gold in colour, not white)

7 oz water infusion of lemon balm (made as per instructions in previous section).

Optional:

Melissa essential oil – 10-15 drops (for extra potency)

2 drops tea-tree oil (anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungicide)

contents of 1 capsule Vitamin E (as a preservative)

1-2 tsp honey




Making the cream

For this step you will need your stove-top double-boiler or glass bowl in a pan of water that you can heat, as for the oil infusion process.

Put the infused oil mixture, coconut oil and the beeswax into the bowl, and heat gently until the beeswax melts, stirring occasionally so as to combine everything well.

Let the oil mixture cool to lukewarm, and then add the essential oils (and honey and Vitamin E if you are using these).

At this point you need to use a blender or blender stick to combine the oil-wax mixture and the water-based mixture. Put the oil in the blender, or in a bowl or jar large enough to hold the finished mixture. Begin to beat the oil-wax mixture, and then slowly add the water in a slow, steady stream, beating continuously until everything is mixed. You should end up with a light, fluffy cream that will absorb well and not be too sticky.

Use a clean spatula to transfer the cream into jars, ideally of dark glass, and store in the refrigerator for longer keeping. This mixture should keep for 3 months with no problems, even without adding any preservative.

The cream is a soothing skin cream that is great for general moisturizing, or as a lip balm. But it also has extra powers – apply liberally to your skin if you feel the beginnings of a cold sore or herpes lesion, and chances are, the lesion won't break out. If you do get a break-out, apply the cream to the lesion several times per day, until it heals. You should find that the lemon balm cream will reduce healing time and also reduce break-outs.

If making your own cream is too much bother, you can find a ready-made lemon balm cream to buy. Make sure you get one with enough high-potency lemon balm in it!

Prunella vulgaris – Nature's HealerPrunella vulgaris (also known as “heal-all”) is an herb that has been known in traditional medicine for both internal and external use.

These days Prunella is more known in Chinese medicine, but it's widely found in Europe and North America as well, and has a venerable reputation in herbal medicine. Culpepper's herbal – the old “bible” of herbalists – says of Prunella that “mixed with honey of roses, cleanses and heals all ulcers, in the mouth, and throat, and those also in the secret parts.”

And now science is beginning to verify this traditional wisdom with rigorous laboratory studies.

In one study, polysccharide extracts of Prunella were found to inhibit virus replication of HSV-1 and HSV-2 in the laboratory – including acyclovir-resistant strains of HSV-1. And in another study, a cream made with Prunella vulgaris was shown to reduce the number and severity of herpes lesions in infected guinea pigs.

How to use Prunella vulgaris for herpes

Like lemon balm, prunella vulgaris can be harvested yourself, purchased as a dried herb, or found as an alcohol-based tincture. It grows wild and is considered a weed in many places, so if you find some growing nearby, you can use this. Otherwise you can find the dried herb online or in Chinese medicine suppliers. Prunella is also found in Chinese grocery shops as a tea, and drinking the tea will help boost your general immunity and specifically help with its anti-viral and anti-bacterial action.




Internal use

As a preventative, Prunella should be used daily, as a tea or else by taking a few drops of tincture in a glass of water. Here's one testimonial:

Make your own cream

Honey – more than just a sweetenerHoney has been used as a wound-healer since biblical times, and now in the lab scientists are discovering that this reputation is not just an old wives' tale. Honey – raw, unfiltered honey – is not only a rich source of minerals, vitamins and amino acids, but also is a potent anti-bacterial and anti-viral agent. This anti-microbial action is thought to be due to hydrogen peroxide which is produced by an enzyme in raw honey.

But there's a special type of honey that has even greater healing and anti-bacterial properties: Manuka honey, which is produced by bees feeding on the nectar of the Manuka bush in New Zealand. High quality Manuka honey not only has the hydrogen peroxide anti-microbial powers described above for raw honey – it also has an anti-microbial factor of its own, known as UMF (Unique Manuka Factor), which is highly effective against antibiotic-resistant nasties such as MRSA. The UMF properties of Manuka honey appear to be more stable than the hydrogen-peroxide-related properties, and less affected by heat, light, or biological enzymes.

Manuka honey has been known and used by the indigenous Maori people in New Zealand for hundreds of years. Now its healing properties have been confirmed by science, and in 2004 medical grade Manuka honey was licensed by the British National Health Service as a wound dressing for use where there is a high risk of infection.




Is honey effective as a treatment for herpes?

Several studies have shown that honey has a specific anti-viral effect on the herpes virus. The anti-viral effect has been demonstrated in the lab in tissue culture, and also clinically. One study in 2004 compared the therapeutic effects of topical application of honey and acyclovir ointment on people with recurrent labial or genetic herpes infections. The results were dramatic. All patients found that honey helped them significantly more than treatment with acyclovir cream.

In fact, they reported that two cases of labial herpes and one case of genital herpes remitted completely with the use of honey, while none of them remitted with acyclovir treatment. And overall, for the patients with labial herpes, the mean duration of attacks and pain, occurrence of crusting, and mean healing time with honey treatment were 35%, 39%, 28% and 43% better, respectively, than with acyclovir treatment. For those with genital herpes the results were even more dramatic: the mean duration of attacks and pain, occurrence of crusting, and mean healing time with honey treatment were reported to be 53%, 50%, 49% and 59% better, respectively, than with acyclovir.

If you want to try honey as a treatment for herpes, make sure you get raw, unfiltered honey. Manuka honey is good (though expensive), but other honey works too, as long as it's raw and unprocessed.

How to use honey for herpes

In the study described above, the researchers used straight honey, soaking strips of gauze in the honey to keep it in contact with the lesions. However, honey also works in a more diluted form. In the lab, a 10% solution of Manuka honey was found to have effective anti-viral properties. And in other studies (looking at the effects of honey for other skin conditions such as psoriasis) the researchers formulated an ointment which they applied to the skin as a treatment.

All these ingredients have some anti-viral and healing effect, as well as making a salve which has a more manageable consistency and staying power than pure honey. It's still quite sticky, though, and you need to use the mixture quite thickly, so plan on covering the area with gauze or a dressing of some sort, even if just to protect your clothing.

Olive Leaf Extract – Amazing anti-viral

These days we hear a lot about the benefits of olive oil, but the olive tree has even more to offer. It turns out that the leaf of the olive tree has amazing health benefits, and has been known as a health remedy since ancient Egyptian times.

Olive leaf extract contains loads of anti-oxidants (it's ORAC value – the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity – is double that of green tea extract and over 400% more powerful than Vitamin C). This makes it helpful for cardiovascular support and all the degenerative conditions of aging, as well as being a powerful immune booster. (It's really good for zapping colds and flu when taken at the first sign of illness.) These properties alone give it a place in your medicine cabinet.

But will it help with herpes?

Like many other natural remedies we've been discussing, olive leaf has specific anti-viral effects against HSV in the laboratory, as well as demonstrated antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. That makes it worth a closer look.




How does olive leaf extract work?

The main anti-viral and anti-oxidant substance in olive leaf is oleuropein, which is present in small quantities in extra-virgin olive oil, giving it it's distinctive flavour. However, the amount of oleuropein in the leaves is much higher. Researchers were curious because the olive tree is extremely hardy and resistant to fungus and disease, and it's believed that this is because of the high concentration of oleuropein. It seems that as well as being able to generally boost the immune system, oleuropein also interferes with the replication process of bacteria and viruses, and prevents them from taking hold in your body.

Does olive leaf extract cure herpes?

Though I've not been able to find any clinical studies showing that olive leaf extract is effective against herpes, there are plenty of anecdotal reports.

Which Type of Olive Leaf Extract Is Best?

There are lots of different brands of olive leaf extract on the market, and different forms you can get it in: liquid extract (in glycerine), tincture (alcohol extract) and capsules. Oleuropein is naturally very bitter, so the biggest complaint about most of the brands is the taste. Some manufacturers produce olive leaf extract with various flavors which are supposed to mask the bitterness – with little success, judging from the reports I've found online. I myself prefer one without any extra flavoring, and to take the extract in a bit of water and then have something else to take away the taste (which is not really that bad!)

You can also experiment with adding your own flavouring, eg add the liquid to some juice.

Capsules can avoid this problem to some extent, as long as you find a high-strength one.

Many of the brands of olive leaf extract are just “white label” products – they come from the same warehouse of large suppliers. There's a huge difference in quality between some of the brands, from the quality of the original olive leaf, through the extraction and manufacturing process.

Here are some of the best brands I've been able to find:

Olivus is a super high quality brand. They produce their own products, contracted out to a certified GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) company in the USA. Their products include:

● Olive LeafMax Capsules – the highest strength capsules – containing a mixture of 25% oleuropein extract and olive leaf powder, standarized so that each capsule contains a minimum of 65-70 mg oleuropein. The olive leaf is organic leaf sourced from southern Spain (though the company states that the end product is not certified organic).

Seagate Seagate produces vegetarian soft-gel capsules and liquid extract.

Seagate uses leaves from their own orchard, and processes them using a cold-water extraction method (no chemicals or solvents... Note: most extraction methods use alcohol, which is later removed). The solids are then vacuum extracted and put in the capsule, with no added fillers.

The company mention on their website that the stated oleuropein percentage in most capsules has been found to often be inaccurate, and that the extraction of oleuropein does not make the olive leaf extract any more potent.

Each capsule contains 450 mg olive leaf extract, which is regularly tested for purity (but not standardized as to oleuropein). The recommended dose is 2-4 capsules for maintenance, and up to 9 capsules per day for acute conditions.

Monolaurin – Coconut's Secret Coconut oil has lots of great health properties which are gradually being uncovered and confirmed by scientific research. Many natural health practitioners recommend coconut oil for conditions such as candida, and now it's beginning to be recognised as effective against herpes as well. The anti-viral and anti-fungal properties of coconut oil seem to be largely due to two fatty acids it contains: lauric acid (50%) and capric acid (6-7%).

Even more potent than lauric acid is a substance called monolaurin, which is produced by combining lauric acid with glycerin. Your body will convert some of the lauric acid from any coconut oil you consume into monolaurin, though it's thought that maybe only 3% is converted like this.

Researcher Dr Jon Kabara, who initially discovered the anti-viral effects of monolaurin and lauric acid, estimates that you would need around 3-9 g/day of monolaurin to get it's full anti-viral effect. To get the same result from coconut oil you would need about 300 – 900 ml of coconut oil. That's a large jar of coconut oil every day!

Fortunately, monolaurin is available to buy and it's much easier to take than unprocessed coconut oil. The best form of monolaurin is small pellets which are taken by the scoop (swallowing without chewing). The recommended dose for herpes is ½ to 3 scoops, taken 1-3 times per day with food. You can also get monolaurin in capsule form, but these will have fillers and in general are less concentrated and lower quality.




How does monolaurin help with herpes?.

Monolaurin has well-documented anti-viral properties, not just in the lab but also in clinical research – and it's been specifically found to be effective against the herpes virus. It's a really exciting development in the treatment of HSV, because it's able to dissolve the fatty coating of the virus, get to its DNA core, and so destroy it.

Side-effects and cautions

Monolaurin is extremely safe, and there are no harmful effects noted, even with daily use over many years.

However, there are some cautions to be aware of, especially when you start using it.

It's recommended to begin with a very small dose until you establish your own tolerance level, as some people get mild digestive upsets in the beginning. Other mild symptoms such as headache, muscle aches and pains, minor rashes or skin flushing have been reported by some users, in what is known as a Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction, or “die-off”.

The Herxheimer reaction can occur with any powerful curative in diseases such as herpes or candida where there is a high concentration of virus, fungus or bacteria present. These Herxheimer symptoms aren't caused by the treatment (in this case, monolaurin) but by the fast release into your body of huge quantities of dead virus, which makes you feel temporarily worse.

You can avoid this by starting with a small dose and working up to the full dose, and if symptoms like this do occur, cut back on the dose for a while and drink plenty of water, rest, have an epsom salt bath, and any other strategies that help with detox.

There are several brands of monolaurin available. The best (and most cost-effective) form of monolaurin is the pelletized form, rather than capsules (which contain filler).

One of the most reputable brands is Lauricidin® produced by Med-Chem Laboratories, which was founded by Professor Jon Kabara PhD who led the pioneering research on monolaurin.

DMSO – Ninja Medicine DMSO – dimethyl sulfoxide – is the new kid on the block in any catalogue of home remedies for herpes. And yes, it's stretching things a bit to call it a natural remedy... but DMSO is in a class of its own, and its safety, lack of side-effects and unique mode of action give it a place here.

So what is DMSO?

DMSO is a by-product of the wood-chipping industry and paper production. It's extremely cheap to produce, and readily available because of its widespread use as an industrial solvent.

And I know, this doesn't sound very promising as a treatment for health conditions. But in fact, DMSO has some very interesting and unusual properties: it's able to penetrate biological membranes, including skin and nerve cell membranes, without causing any damage. Even more exciting, it's able to carry a range of other substances with it and deliver them to places inside the body that would otherwise be inaccessible.

The first medical application of DMSO was in the treatment of burns. DMSO replaces water in the tissues, and this enables it to keep the wound dry and so prevent infection and enable faster healing. Not only that, but DMSO seems to be able to relieve pain directly, by acting on the nerve fibres which carry pain signals.




DMSO is also an anti-inflammatory, an anti-biotic, an anti-viral and an anti-fungal in its own right, and this combination of properties has led to its use in treating a whole range of conditions, from arthritis to musculo-skeletal injuries, to head injuries and strokes.

And DMSO has been found to be effective in the treatment of herpes, both on its own, and in combination with other substances such as Vitamin C or anti-viral drugs.

Is DMSO safe?

DMSO was actually banned for medical use by the FDA in 1965, when a woman in Ireland died of an allergic reaction after taking a cocktail of different drugs, including DMSO. (Though it was never established that DMSO was the culprit, it ended up with the blame.)

However, in 1970 DMSO was approved by the FDA for veterinary use. And In 1978 one lonely medical use was allowed by the FDA: DMSO is approved for the treatment of interstitial cystitis, a bladder disorder with no other known treatment. Although over 1500 medical studies have been submitted for FDA approval, the FDA claims that none of them offers conclusive proof of DMSO's effectiveness.

As for safety, Dr Moreton Walker says in his book “DMSO: Nature's Healer” that up to that time (the book was first published in 1993) “no toxicity has been reported in consumer reports, at medical meetings, in the scientific literature, during the four international DMSO symposia, or anywhere else. The approximately 2000 people for whom physicians in medical practice have personally prescribed DMSO have not advised of any serious deleterious reactions.”

The bottom line, as cynics like to point out, is that DMSO – like many other cheap and readily available natural medicines – is never going to be studied properly. Let's face it, DMSO lacks the profit potential that the pharmaceutical companies want … why would they bother forking out the huge sums of money needed for high-powered clinical studies, when there's no reward in it for them?




DMSO side-effects

The main side-effect of DMSO is “garlic breath”. Though pure DMSO is tasteless, it's broken down in the body to dimethyl sulphide which has a distinctive garlic-like odour. It's harmless, and most people find the therapeutic benefits of DMSO worth the minor annoyance.

Another common problem is skin irritation, if DMSO is applied full-strength to the skin. It's generally recommended to start off with a 50:50 dilution because of this, and gradually increase to 75% DMSO if it can be tolerated.

DMSO should not be used with any blood-thinning medication such as warfarin, or even aspirin, and for hemophiliacs, DMSO should only be used under medical supervision, if at all.

Using DMSO for herpesThere are several different ways you can use DMSO for herpes.

1) To relieve pain and promote healing of lesions in an outbreak

DMSO, like most other treatments for herpes, works best if it's applied when you first notice the warning signs (eg tingling) and before the lesion erupts. Some people find that the lesion just never erupts after treatment of the site with DMSO. Others – usually not catching it at such an early stage – do get a break out but then the lesions dry up and heal much faster than normal.

You can use DMSO on its own or combine it with other helpful treatments, eg essential oils.

2) DMSO as an anti-viral

DMSO has been found to be an anti-viral in its own right. It dissolves the outer protein coating of the virus and leaves the core unprotected, able to be attacked by your body's own immune system.

Because DMSO can penetrate nerve cells it's able to get right to the hiding place of the herpes virus – which has the exciting potential of being able to eliminate herpes from your body for good!




How to use DMSO

The easiest way to use DMSO is to apply it on your skin. Since DMSO can penetrate so well, this is efficient as well as easy.

DMSO can be purchased as a liquid (the purest form) or as a gel, or as a cream. The gel has some advantages in being easier to apply, but the liquid is the most cost-effective. It's generally recommended to purchase the pharmaceutical grade 99.9% pure DMSO and then dilute it, either with distilled water or with aloe vera (which helps to counter the slight irritation some people experience). Use food quality aloe vera, i.e. juice intended for oral use – the kind you buy at a health food store.

Start by diluting the full strength DMSO 50:50 with either water or aloe vera as you choose. Test this first on a small area of skin, eg the inner elbow, to see if you get any sensitivity or allergic reaction. If this is okay, you can then apply this mixture to the part of your body you want to treat. If this is a sensitive area, eg mouth or genital area, it might be wise to stay with the 50% solution. If you feel you can tolerate a higher concentration then you may increase it to 70% (7 parts pure DMSO to 3 parts distilled water or aloe vera) but no higher.

For use as a topical analgesic, a 70% solution is generally used.

For deep penetration or use as a carrier with other substances, aim for 70-90%, which has been found to be the most effective for penetrating skin. (For some reason, a solution over 90% strength tends not to work as well.)

Because DMSO is such an effective carrier, you need to make sure you wash your hands and the area to be treated quite thoroughly before applying DMSO. Don't apply any other lotions or creams within at least an hour of applying DMSO, as all commercial lotions and creams contain some preservative and often other chemicals – stuff you don't want inside your body.




You can apply DMSO with your (clean) hands, or with a cotton bud or cotton ball, depending on the size of the area you want to treat. Be generous about the area you apply it to, and trust that it will get to where it's needed. Remember that some people use DMSO orally without any ill-effects (other than a slight degree of gastric irritation) so don't worry about an overdose of DMSO, and don't be concerned too much about applying it to a precise area. The DMSO will enter your blood stream and get carried to where it's needed, for the most part.

Once you apply DMSO you can massage it a bit to encourage absorption, and then leave it to dry for about 20 minutes. If you plan to cover the area with clothing, make sure it's a natural fabric such as cotton or linen, and not a synthetic such as polyester or nylon that might react with DMSO.
