Start the New Year with this thought!

You may have heard of the phrase “pay it forward” and not really understood what it meant before. If you have understood the concept, then you may not have put it into practice yet, or realized how it can relate to your home life or business.

To “pay it forward” means that when you have been the recipient of an act of kindness, then you repay this act of kindness to others, which can start a whole chain reaction of random acts of kindness, leading to a whole transfor-mation of spirit.

You may ask what this has to do with your home life or business, but believe me, it has everything to do with it!

The concept and its effect is much like viral marketing, where everyone gets in-volved and is affected in some way that can wind up being something huge.

Your home life or business is all about relationships - Relationships with people you know, and relationships

with total strangers, clients, or potential customers. The way you treat people has everything to do with what you get in return.

So what are some ways you can “pay it forward” and treat people extra special so that they turn around and do the same for a few, if not many, other people to build a giant network of people helping people?

Start with small things. Offer to help with a project, drop a dollar in a donation bucket, give a small gift to say “Thank You” to someone, pay someone’s toll who is behind you, give a customer an extra donut or a free drink now and then, etc. There are limitless ideas that are equally great. Be selfless; treat everyone with respect and kindness. Your acts will not be forgotten, so don’t forget the power of paying it forward!

CDD InFORMaTIOnSeven OakSBy Bill Parsons Vice Chairman, Seven Oaks CDD

In 2003, the CDD Board autho-rized $7,326 to rent holiday lights/decorations from a vendor during

the holiday season. The vendor’s price included installing and removing his lights/decorations. The same arrange-ments were made in 2004 ($9,485), 2007 ($8,950), and 2008 ($8,800).

When the CDD Board became resi-dent controlled at the end of 2008, the economy had gone south and people, to include residents at Seven Oaks, were having financial issues. The resident controlled CDD Board decided in 2009 not to spend the almost $10,000 for lights/decorations as had been done in previous years. Instead, CDD employees installed lights/decorations only at the main entrance to the clubhouse and inside the clubhouse.

In 2010, the CDD Board decided that it would increase the lights and deco-

rations over several years by purchas-ing some each year and storing them for future years. For that year, we spent about $400 to purchase lights for the entrance to Seven Oaks at Ancient Oaks Blvd and some wreaths for other locations. In 2010, it cost $600 to install and remove the lights/decorations.

This year, we bought 40 strands of 9 ft garland with LED lights for $2,560 and 20 strands of lights for $330. We also added power outlets at Sum-mergate and Mystic Oak Blvds for $1,720. This allowed us to add lights/decorations at the other two entrances to Seven Oaks. It will cost $800 to re-move and install the 2011 decorations. On the next page are pictures of some of the decorations at Seven Oaks this year. Next year, the CDD Board plans to purchase additional decorations.

Page 7SEVEN OAKS NEWS January 2012

Some residents have asked how we can spend $30,000 on the water fountain pic-tured on page 6 and so little on the decora-tions for the holiday season. One reason is that the water fountain is visible 12 months of the year while the holiday decorations are only up for 1/12 of that time and lighted for only a few hours in the evening.

But the primary reason is that the CDD Board felt that the water fountain was an investment that would help all residents of Seven Oaks with their property values. As most of you know when you buy property, the first three rules are location, location, lo-cation. Seven Oaks has that with being close to the interstate, a new mall, new hospital and community college under construction, etc. Realtors also believe that 50 percent of shoppers decide to purchase a home based on curb appeal before they even get out of their car. For this reason, we want Seven Oaks to have the best curb appeal possible from S.R. 56 where thousands of cars pass it each day and prospective buyers enter the community. v

I think that by the time you read this the Christmas and New Year’s holidays will have come and gone.

I hope you each had wonderful Christ-mas and had a chance to get together with family and friends and relax a bit from the day to day grind. I really enjoyed walking through the neighbor-hoods and looking at all the lights and decorations. Some of our residents are very creative! It was a pleasure to see how beautiful some of the streets looked. I always enjoy the holidays and this time of year but I must admit that when New Year’s Day is done, I’m ready to put everything away and get back to normal. While I do not expect everyone to be as quick as I am to remove their holiday decorations, I think leaving them up until Valentine’s Day would be pushing it a little. Don’t you? That was the case last year. I noticed some houses had Christmas lights up in

early March. Something tells me that if February rolls around and there are “Candy Canes and Mistletoe” hanging from your roof, you’re going to get one of our “Friendly Letters”! I wanted to mention something about the gates at the entrances to some of our communities. Please be very careful when entering or exiting the gated communities, we recently had an incident where a car was damaged when one of the gates malfunctioned. I also know that there are drivers and residents who “piggy back”, or closely follow others who have opened the gates. These actions can lead to what I call an “OOPS!” moment. (No further explanation necessary!) They have the potential to cause damage to both vehicles and gates. A little extra patience and caution is a good thing! I think that our DRC (Design Review Committee) is providing a great ser-

vice to our community. They are the folks who review modification requests submitted by homeowners to verify adherence to the covenant and deed restrictions for Seven Oaks. They are in need of some additional members. If you have one evening a month that you can spare to keep our community the beautiful place it is to live, please consider volunteering. One additional comment about the DRC; they have been instructed not to approve the removal of any oak trees in the space between the sidewalk and street unless the modification application includes a permit from Pasco County. The months of January and Febru-ary is the time of year when Mother Nature sometimes forgets it’s Florida and freezes some of our plants. I’ve spoken to a number of landscape folks and people with thumbs a lot greener than mine and they say not to cut the brown stalks, leaves, etc. off until

the danger of frost is past. The dead or burnt portion of the plant actually protects the plant from being frozen down to the roots if there are multiple frosts. That does not mean that we can ignore the landscaping until June! I’m just trying to save us all money by not having to replace plants killed by frost. I’m sure our Property Manager will take into consideration the impact that the weather has on our landscaping. That’s it for now. From the SOPOA Board, our wish to all of you for a Happy and Prosperous 2012!Hope to see you at our next Board Meeting…. Just some things, I think I think…

VOICE FOR THE ORPHanS GRanD OPEnInG

Voice for the Orphans is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness and providing education regarding the situa-tion of abandoned, neglected and abused children. The organiza-tion wants to provide the public with knowledge and believes with this awareness and education many will be moved to act. Voice for the Orphans believes everyone can help an orphaned child either through prayer, volunteering, donating financially, fostering or adopting a child. “Our vision is that people will accept our call to action and want

to help the many children who need it. We know not everyone will choose to foster or adopt, this is why we offer other ways people can help,” said Veronica Brocato, President and Founder of Voice for the Orphans. Voice for the Orphans just hosted its Grand Opening to introduce their vision to the public. Ac-tivities included: bounce houses, slide, face painter, special guest speaker Loryn Smith of Woven Basket, a children’s book author’s signing, puppet theatre and raffle. “We wanted to introduce ourselves to our community, share our vision and make sure the families who came out in support had a great time,” said Veronica. Other organizations with similar missions were also present at the grand opening: Watoto, Eckerd Community Alternatives, Oasis Pregnancy Center and Chinese Children Adoption International

had information tables and volun-teers present to answer questions. To learn more about Voice for the Orphans visit the website at www.voicefortheorphans.org or contact Veronica Brocato at [email protected].

CDD MEETInG REMInDER

Please consider attending the January 11th meeting at 6:30 pm at the Seven Oaks Clubhouse.

At the meeting, the CDD Board will be discussing what to do about the tree roots of the oak trees between the sidewalks and streets starting to push up the sidewalks. At this meeting, Com-missioner Mulieri and five mem-bers of the Pasco County staff to include Debra Zampetti, Zoning/Code Compliance Administrator, will be briefing the Board on the newly approved Pasco County ordinance concerning this issue.

The Board is gathering informa-tion to make a decision on what actions should be taken to mini-mize the damage to the sidewalks and who should pay for the dam-age when it can not be prevented.

BUSInESS spotlight

I opened Big Frog Custom T-Shirts and More of Wesley Chapel almost 2 years ago when I decided to

move to this country. I put my life savings into this business and became a business woman after fleeing the political situation that my country is facing. I never imagined leaving my homeland, Venezuela and was hesitant to leave.

When I look back I can not believe that I had the strength and the courage to leave our home, family, jobs, friends and our comfort zone. I guess I did it for my kids. Now I know it was the best decision I ever made. This country has welcomed us with open arms and has given us equal opportunities to achieve the American dream.

When my husband and I made the decision to come to this country, I looked into the idea of buying a franchise, because it seemed less risky than starting a new business from scratch. I considered different franchises like Mr. Empanada, Post Net and even a beauty salon.

Finally, I chose Big Frog Custom T-Shirts. I liked the concept and all the benefits it offers to customers. It uses a process known as Direct to Garment printing (DTG) that produces very high resolution, full color prints that are highly durable, very attractive and cost effective. At Big Frog we offer free design or artwork, no set up charges, 24 hour turnaround for most orders,

unlimited colors on the designs and no minimum orders; Buy just one or Buy 100, with a bulk discount. Sometimes people come into the store and know exactly what they want; they have the logo or the design already made and we just print the shirts. Many times the client has an idea, or may have no clue as to what they want, so our talented graphic designers create the design for them, free of charge! The artists will offer advice as to which prints would come out best on which color shirts, and even give style and sizing advice. Once the client is totally satisfied with the design and selection, we then print the shirts. I think a company’s logo

is very important to its image, so it is important to leave designing one in the hands of an expert. And there’s no extra cost at Big Frog! Big Frog Custom T-Shirts of Wesley Chapel is now also offering embroidering, made in house!

Introducing Our Nurse Practitioner, tracy Green, arnP

The Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce announced last Thursday that John Negley of Florida Hospital of Wesley Chapel won the coveted title of Honorary Mayor. Jan Roberts of Big Brothers Big Sisters is the new Deputy Mayor of Wesley Chapel. The event was held at Wesley Chapel Toyota and co- sponsored by the Pasco Times. “This is an exciting time to live and work in Wesley Chapel, the momentum is so positive. Over the

past few years I have seen the level of member participation in Chamber events increase dramatically. It is inspiring!” states President, Debie Kaplan. The Chamber has elevated the level in which they do everything and this vision seems to have funneled down to three incredible people who put their name in the ring to run for the Honorary Mayor of Wesley Chapel. Mitze Richeson, from Cypress Creek

Chiropractic, Jan Roberts from Big Brothers Big Sisters and John Negley from Florida Hospital of Wesley Chapel.

This race lasted five months. Their goal was to raise the most money. The prize is winning the title of both Honorary Mayor and

Florida hospital’s John Negley Named as wesley Chapel’s

New honorary Mayor

Deputy Mayor. This race was designed to give these individuals a platform to gain visibility for themselves as representatives of their perspective businesses, an opportunity to showcase their business as an outstanding member of the community, an opportunity to raise money for the Chamber and an opportunity for each individual to give back to their favorite charity. They in essence become the face of the Wesley Chapel Chamber, and the Wesley Chapel Community.

This year’s race has shown us how three individuals can unite various supporters together as individuals who volunteered their time and effort to come up with intriguing ways to network! We saw them create different events and utilize

the local businesses to support their efforts and donate prizes. We saw them interact with all the Chamber members, lobbying for their vote, by creatively asking for donations. We saw them use their leadership skills of passion, realized vision, influence and the recognized need for one another. The three candidates raised an unprecedented $ 67,000 of which over $ 30,000 will go out to the candidate’s respective charities. The Chamber is grateful to all of those people and businesses that contributed their time and money for the Chamber’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Breast Cancer is the number one cancer in women. It used to be the number one cancer killer, but thanks

to societal awareness and early detection with mammography most women are not dying after a breast cancer diagnosis. Mammograms don’t prevent breast cancer, but they save lives by finding breast cancer early, leading to intervention and cure. Finding breast cancers early with mammography has also meant that many more women are able to keep their breasts without resorting to mastectomy. What is Mammography?Mammography is a special type of X-Ray. It is a photograph of the breast using low dose radiation designed for imaging breast tissue and is very safe. Mammography is the most important tool radiologists have to help diagnose and evaluate women with lumps and to monitor women who have had breast cancer. Although mammography is the best tool for early diagnosis, mammography is not perfect - missing about 10% of breast cancers. So if you feel a lump and it doesn’t show up on mammography, let your doctor know. Many physicians will order an ultrasound or MRI

to better evaluate a woman with symptoms. These imaging tests should not lessen the importance of regular breast self-examination and examination by an experienced health care professional. Regular breast self exams are also very important, leading to early detection. Types of MammographyThere are two types of mammography exams, screening and diagnostic. Screening mammography is for women who have no complaints or symptoms. The goal of screening mammography is to detect cancer when it is too small to be felt. Early detection of small breast cancers by screening mammography greatly improves chances for cure. Screening is recommended every one to two years after age 40 and every year after age 50. Diagnostic mammography is an exam on a patient who has a breast

complaint, such as breast lump, nipple discharge or an abnormal screening mammogram. These exams are more involved and more time consuming and are used to fully characterize the size and location of breast abnormalities. Women with breast implants will usually require the additional views used in diagnostic mammography.

In summary, the benefits of mammography for the early detection and treatment of breast cancer is significant and saves lives. The benefits far outweigh the minimal risk from radiation received and the discomfort during mammography. Mammography, even with its limitations, will continue to be the gold standard with which other imaging tests are compared. v Dr. Manuel S. Rose is a Board Certified Radiologist and founder of Rose Radiology Centers, inc. www.MRIRose.com 813-788-2500.

I attended a very special ceremony on 11/11/11 at 11am and wanted to share some information about

the person they were honoring.

The Veterans of Foreign Affairs inTampa Bay organized a ceremony to present the Purple Heart for George W. Hall to his next of kin, John Murray. General Richard F. Keene presented the award on behalf of the U.S. Army.

New England grown George W. Hall was born in Massachusetts on 27February 1919. Bill, as he liked to be called, graduated Henniker High

School in 1937, where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in Manchester, New Hampshire on 30 September 1940. He was 21 years old and had already one year of college completed.

As a term of his enlistment, he specifically requested to serve in the Philippine Department. After four months of training at Larchmont, New York, PVT Hall traveled via ship through the Panama Canal and across the Pacific to the island of Luzon in the Philippines Islands. Hall was as-signed to the 20th Pursuit Squadron, 24th Pursuit Group, 5th Interceptor Command, Far East Air Force.

He subsequently served at Nichols Field in 1940 and then Clark Field in 1941. After the Japanese Empire

attacked the American protectorate of the Philippines in December 1941, the overwhelmed American forces in Bataan, including the 20th Pursuit Squadron, surrendered on 9 April 1942. George W. Hall survived the Bataan Death March, the infamous sixty mile forced march, and was imprisoned in Cabanatuan No. 3, a segregated camp for American service-men captured at Corregidor.

In late November 1942, Bill died ofPellagra, a vitamin deficiency disease. Officially, PVT Hall became missing in action on 1 December 1942; he was only 23 years old. The WarDepartment informed his mother, Mrs. Aaron Todd, via telegram in August 1943. PVT Hall’s remains were never recovered or returned to U.S. soil. v

WCAA spoRts

wCAA Lacrosse celebrates 2011 with a look back at some of our

accomplishments. This was our tenth year providing lacrosse to Wesley Chapel and the surrounding area for youth ages 5 through high-school senior. The program started with a just a couple of boys teams running only during the spring. Now there are boys and girls teams playing year round, three annual tournaments as well as plans to support nine teams for spring 2012. That growth was spurred by our WCAA Lacrosse Tournaments. Our first tournaments brought local Tampa area teams together during the spring season in mini jamborees, which we will continue in 2012. In 2007 we hosted the first Derek Pieper Memorial Cup, a tournament honoring the memory of one of our players lost in the prime of his life. Now, five years later, each November that event brings thousands of people to our area pumping millions of dollars into our local economy. In 2009, Wesley Chapel hosted the first Sunshine State Games lacrosse

tournament. This 30+ year old, state sponsored, amateur sporting event expanded its lacrosse presence the following year by adding two additional locations to the event we started. This year, we added I Lacrosse My Heart, an all-girls charity tournament which supported St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital’s pediatric heart unit. This event also helped raise heart-health awareness for the girls and women of our community. Over the years we have supported numerous charity organizations. We have offered fundraising and service opportunities to our local Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Brownies and Girls Scouts. We held blood drives and included organizations like Voice for Orphans at our tournaments and events. At our annual December holiday lacrosse camp, we collect gifts for Toys for Tots of Pasco County. We have provided donations and support to several local schools, local churches, and nearly a dozen local lacrosse teams. Thousands of dollars have been invested into Wesley Chapel District Park for improvements to be enjoyed by all

members of our community. And, through the Derek Pieper Memorial Fund, we provide scholarships to needy children, who would not have otherwise been able to play lacrosse. From the tournaments benefiting our local community, to the dozens of players who moved on to play collegiate lacrosse, to the youth of our community learning sportsmanship and teamwork by playing with our teams, we have many accomplishments. WCAA Lacrosse is proud to be a part of the Seven Oaks community and we look forward to another ten years of providing opportunities for the youth of our area. Without the hard work and dedication of our coaches and volunteers, none of this would be possible. Come be a part of the fastest sport on two feet! For the past 5,000 years, China amassed a diverse legacy of heroes, myths, and values that

still resonate in the present. Today, Shen Yun Performing Arts is reviving the essence of traditional Chinese culture in full color on stages around the world.

“It was an extraordinary experience,” said Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett after watching Shen Yun, “the level of skill, but also the power of the archetypes and the

narratives were startling. And of course it was exquisitely beautiful.” Ride with Mongolians across endless steppes. Recall the grandeur of an ancient Tang Dynasty palace. Resounding drums awaken the dusty plateaus of the Middle Kingdom. Gorgeous backdrops extend the stage, transporting the audience to distant lands and eras. An orchestra that combines Western and Chinese instruments like no other accompanies the dancers with stirring scores.

Shen Yun strives to capture the spirit of traditional Chinese culture and its beliefs. Ancient literary classics extol the compassionate, courageous, and loyal, values embodied by the most memorable characters. Thrill in the triumph of the great General Yue Fei; cheer on the Monkey King as he tricks a stubborn foe; and witness how these values still endure in contemporary China. Shen Yun bridges past and present in an uplifting, inspiring, and indelible performance.

Shen Yun will be performing at Straz Center, Tampa on march 3rd & 4th., 2012. For more information, visit Shenyun2012.com. v

SEVEN OAKS RESIDENT REALTOR

COMMUnITy spotlight

Calling all future Seven Oaks stars! This is our area’s version of

“American Idol”!

Heritage Arts Center Association is planning our 29th talent contest. The dates have been set! Applications and information are available on our website at www.heritagearts.org. The deadline for applications is Thursday, Jan. 26th. The competition is open to talented young people through the 12th grade.

Several hundred students participate each year, so to allow even more stars their chance to shine on stage we have expanded to TWO final shows. On Saturday, Feb. 11th, we expect an energetic crowd of excited youngsters to compete in the tryouts for the thrill of becoming a finalist. Participants are

judged primarily on talent, but also on stage presence and appropriate appearance. The final competitions will be on Saturday, March 10th, at the Theater at Wesley Chapel High School. Tickets for adults will be $12, or both shows for $20. For students through high school the fee is $6, both shows for $10, and children under 5 are free. We award over $3000 in cash prizes, trophies and ribbons and a chance to compete onstage with an audience of several hundred. The competition is conducted in a professional atmosphere with judges from central Florida who are outstanding in their respective fields. Singers, instrumental musicians, acrobats, bands, baton twirlers, dancers and other forms of entertainment are welcome to participate. There are several age categories for solos and one or more group categories, and

a student may enter as a solo and with a group. Corporate sponsors have allowed us to generously reward these young people for their hard work in developing their talents. These gifted students eagerly await their chance each year to shine as a true star! Several of our former contestants have gained valuable experience and confidence, and have gone on to receive college scholarships and positions with professional performance organizations. It is indeed a rewarding event for all – sponsors, audience, producers, and performers!

If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, or for more information please email Barbara Friedman at [email protected] or call 352-567-1720. v

as construction of the state-of-the-art 80-bed Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel con-

tinues at a rapid pace, another order of important hospital business was held Tuesday, November 29, when the Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel Foundation held its first official board meeting. “It was a monumental day for the new hospital, as we met for the first time as the Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel Foundation Board of Trustees,” says Connie Bladon, executive director of the foundation. “Our board members have diverse backgrounds and deep experience in business and philanthropy within the Wesley Chapel community. Their collective experience will enhance our foundation’s efforts to serve this community as we plan initiatives to elevate health care in Wesley Chapel.” The Board of Trustees, comprised of nine members from the com-munity in addition to Ms. Bladon and Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel President and CEO Brian Adams, started work immediately Tuesday by identifying key initiatives for which fundraising will be crucial. A tour of the hospital and grounds followed the inaugural meeting. “ The nine members of the Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel Foundation Board are: Jerry Bell, Presidio Net-work Solutions; Alayne Berkins and Charles Berkins, Rochester Electro Medical, Inc.; John Braumuller , Synovus Bank; Dawn Coe-Jones , former LPGA player now with Golf Canada; Todd Johnson, Strategic Business Associates; Ernie Marquart,

Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP; Michael Morris, Hanna, Lamar & Morris CPAs; and J.D. Porter, Wire-grass Ranch. The Board will meet monthly starting in January 2012. The full-service Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel is scheduled to open in the fall of 2012 and is the largest construction project in the area in many years. The hospital is already giving back to the community by ensuring that more than 75 percent of the vendors, contractors, labor and other services needed to build the hospital originate from the Wesley Chapel community. Interesting facts about the new Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel include: 4: Miles of underground utilities at the hospital

6: number of floors in the hospital

13: number of building permits required for the hospital before construction begins

30: truck loads of cement poured into the foundation one day this month

37:Miles of piping throughout the hospital

52: total number of acres

75: Percent of local workers hired to design and build the hospital
