Seven Days in the Month of Dey

The Center of Statistics at Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRAI) has published this report regarding the recent seven days of

protests in Iran which occurred from December 28, 2017 to January 3, 2018.

At the time of the compilation of this report, there are still protests occurring in parts of Iran. As a result, this report does not provide

the most comprehensive outlook possible of the recent protests in Iran and is solely focused on the first seven days of protests.

Regardless of the short time difference since the beginning of the protests in Iran and the compilation of this report, it should be

considered that, as a result of the repressive atmosphere and a lack of free flow of information, mainly caused by the filtering of the

social medias, this report has been gathered from the limited information available.

This report provides statistical analysis --including the geographical dispersion of the protests, the number of arrests and deaths-- based

on official comments and reports by Iranian authorities and human rights groups.

There has been protests in all 31 provinces, spread throughout 69 counties and 71 cities, during the seven days.

The first day of protests occurred on December 28, 2017 in 3 cities. On the second day, the protests occurred in 11 cities, and the next

day they spread to 28 cities. On the 31st December, the fourth day of the protests, the protests were held in 26 cities. On the January 1,

2018, the fifth day of protests, the protests were held in 27 cities and it was on this day that the Iranian authorities blocked various social

media and messaging sites, including Telegram, Instagram, and WhatsApp. On Tuesday January 2nd, the protests continued in 12 cities

and finally on the seventh day of the protests, January 3rd, 5 cities remained protesting.

All 20 of the top most populated cities of Iran participated in the protests.


The total population of the cities where protests occurred is at least 42 million people. However, there is no reliable statistics on the

number of people who participated in the protests.

According to official statistics by the Iranian authorities, at least between 21 to 24 people were killed during the protests in the following

areas: Dorud, Khomeyni Shahr, Izeh, Shahin Shahr, Tuyserkan, Kahrizsang, Ghahdarijan. The difference in number of reported deaths

in Tuyserkan is due to the existing contradictory reports by the government sources. See the following:

Duroud Governor in interview with Iranian Student News Agency (ISNA) (01 January 2018): 4 people were killed in recent protests in

Doroud. Representative of Izeh in an interview with Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA) (01 January 2018): 2 people were killed in

Izeh. Khorasan newspaper quoted Iran’s state media (02 January 2018): 3 to 6 people were killed in Tuyserkan. Young Journalists Club

(YJC) (02 January 2018): a member of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was killed in KahrizSang city in province of Isfahan.

Khorasan newspaper (02 January 2018): 3 people were killed in Shahin Shahr in Isfahan province. Fars News Agency (FNA) (02

January 2018): 6 people were killed in Ghahdarijan city in Isfahan province. YJC (02 January 2018): 2 people were killed in Khomeyni

Shahr in province Isfahan.

The following Scatter map spatially portrays the areas in Iran where protesters were killed.


Out of the total of 71 cities where the protests occurred, no specific reports on the arrestees have been published by the Iranian authorities

or human rights organizations. However, according to 22 statements made by the Iranian judicial authorities and 3 reports by human

rights organizations, a total of 2,094 arrests have been made to this day.

This chart shows the various cities in Iran where arrests were reported.


40% of the reported arrests were announced by human rights organizations, and even though with a slight delay some of the reports

have been approved or have been restated by the authorities, considering these cases, its faire to say that at least 60% of the arrests have

been announced by the government officials.

54 of the individuals who were arrested are university students, and most of them are from the University of Tehran. Although the

official sources have reported 90 students arrested by the Ministry of Intelligence, at the time of gathering of this report enough

information and details was not available on all the case.

The following is a full list of the university students who were reportedly arrested, followed by a list of the individuals who have been

detained and whose names HRAI was able to confirm:
