The Wizard of OZ Spring Musical Thanks to all who came out for our kick-off Parent/Cast Meeting last Saturday! We are very excited to begin practicing! Click here for the cast list and here for the detailed schedule of rehearsals. If a student is going to be missing practice, late to practice OR leaving practice early, please let us know by clicking here. It is very difficult to coordinate 100 people in the few rehearsals that we have, so knowing who will be missing is VERY important. The musi-cal would not be possible if it weren’t for all our parent volunteers. Please click here to vol-unteer. Please go to setonmusical.com for all musical related information.

2019 Seton Spirit Ad Campaign Update We are in the third week and halfway mark of the Seton Spirit Ad Campaign! to submit a mid-year report of your current classes and grades. Please let Mrs McIntyre know ([email protected]) of the colleges that need your mid-year reports. Exception: Common Application, SENDedu, and Coali-tion will be done automatically unless you contact her otherwise. PRO Parent Meeting Monday, 1/28, in the Seton Gym

Please join us at 7:00pm for parent’s Social Time. The meeting will then start

at 7:30, Dr. Mary Camarca, All Saints Parishioner and Pediatric Emergency

Medicine physician will be our guest speaker. She will be speaking about her

perspective as an EM physician on the alarming increase in teenage/

adolescent mental health emergencies (from anxiety, depression, drug over-

dose, suicide) and the role that social media/smart phone/internet use plays.

This affects all our students in one way or another. You DON’T want to miss

this discussion! We will also announce the Science Fair winners. If you have

a child in the science fair, ALL projects need to be taken home at the end of

the meeting. We look forward to seeing you there!

Dear Mrs. Carroll, Students, Teachers, and Parents, Thank you so much for all the donations. We made up boxes and sent some to West VA and some to Southwestern VA. These donations will make a big difference to a lot of people! As always, Seton students come through again for helping the very poor! You have made a brighter Christmas for many people. All of us from Medical Missionaries

Dear Seton, Thanks for our annual Seton basket. What a treat! We appreciate all the goodies inside. Best wishes to the staff and students for a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Your stone house gardening neighbors, Daisy and Rod Reynold

Simon Kanazeh would like to thank all you for their donations, support, and prayers for his mission trip to Colombia in December. The mission was a total success. Not only did the missionaries bring Christmas joy to the people of the island, but the people there also taught us about being grateful and trusting in God in our lives. You can see a video of the mission trip by looking up Simon Kanazeh on YouTube.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE SETON COMMUNITY

Terry Beatley, a Pro-Life Speaker will be coming to St Raymond’s on Thurs, Feb 7th at 7PM. The history of how the Amer-ican mindset came to accept abortion is a sociological study in itself. A primary point of the presentation is that the evil was planned and plotted decades ago specifically to undermine Catholic doctrine - oftentimes by prominent Catholics in a posi-tion to affect others. See https://www.hosea4you.org/ for her remarkable story. Click here for the flyer.

All Saints Church is hosting a Night to Shine, Sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation, on February 8th, 2019. Night to Shine is an unforgettable Prom night experience, cen-tered on God’s love, for people with special needs. We are so grateful to have had so much help from the Seton Community in 2018, and hope to have as many of you back as volun-teers as possible for this coming year. With your help, we hope to make this an unforgetta-ble night for the attendees and the volunteers! Registration is online. Click here to register.

There will be a volunteer meeting to assign roles, go over important information, and answer any questions. Please come to the meeting even if you came last year. The meeting will be at the PAC on Saturday, Jan 26th at 3:30 and will only last 45 minutes. The address is 9300 Stonewall Road and is the location of the Night to Shine. Please feel free to bring friends that may want to volunteer and have not signed up yet. We still have room for volunteers, especially buddies! If you have any questions please email, [email protected].

New & Improved Saint John Paul II Center (aka gymnasium) Lights

Shortly before Christmas, Santa’s helpers were busy getting ready for the big day but still found time to also work on an important Seton project. It was the completion of the Let There Be Light project to replace the Saint John Paul II Center (aka gymnasium) lighting system. Just before Christmas was the first time the space was available for the three-day project which entailed replacing the 25-year-old lighting technology with a significantly brighter yet much more energy efficient LED lighting system (see before and after photos). In addition these new lights have functionality not preciously available: instant off and on capabilities and are dimmable.

As a multi-purpose facility the JPII Center is the most used space at Seton, in near constant use day and night for a wide variety of functions. The improvements these new lights bring will enhance the atmosphere of every event there for many years to come. This was all made possible through your support of the annual Colonel P. Memorial Golf Tournament and the Let There Be Light campaign of the Seton Athletic Boosters Committee. We thank you and are grateful for everyone’s generosity. What a wonderful way to start 2019!

VEX Tournament at Seton

On Saturday January 5, 2019 Seton hosted its first VEX Robotics tournament. Twenty-four high school teams from across Virginia entered the competition. Seton’s four teams were joined by teams from Prince William County, Loudoun County, as well as independent teams. I organized the event and received a tremendous amount of support from the Seton community. Volunteers included former robotics students (Scott Volpert, Marcus Volpert, Alex Ceol, Drew Dalrymple, Ben Johnson, John Harbour), current students who filled key volunteer roles and forfeited "playing" in the tournament (Ben Volpert & Sofia Garcia), other Seton students (Bridget Atkinson, Nickolas Fucci, Deborah Johnson), youths who may be attending Seton in the future and may be involved in robotics (Lucia Johnson, David Johnson, Seth Kellogg, John Pugh, Nicholas Lalli, Javi Garcia, John Cuccinelli, Jack Cuccinelli, and Matthew Greiner) as well as the dozen of parents who volunteered their time to make this event run so smoothly. I was asked by other Event Planners how I handled getting enough volunteers to run a tournament. They were shocked to learn that I turned away volunteers. Clearly we are blessed by our Catholic community!

After clean-up today all of the Volperts and Sofia came to me with a sketch of a floorplan for running a VEX tournament in our gym. They showed me that the gym would be a facility that would enable us to host an event that was twice the size of the one we hosted today. I plan to pursue their recommendation for future events at our school.

Overall, I believe that we left a very favorable impression on the approximate-ly 150 visitors to our school. Some did not know that this small Catholic school existed in Manassas. I talked to a parent who may pursue having their child apply for admittance next year.

I’m grateful to Mrs. Carroll for allowing me to organize this event and to Mrs. Vander Woude who helped me find a time slot where the entire Corpus Christi Center was available. We raised over $1200 that will benefit the VEX club in the near term, and I believe the exposure of more people to Seton will result in many blessings in the long run.

In Christ, Mark Hoffman
