1. Words of Affirmation

• You have to HEAR it!

• You need lots of verbal affirmation if you

are going to grow

• Words need to be:

• Strengthening

• Specific

• Supportive

‘I can live for two months on a good compliment’ Mark Twain

Page 8: Session 2 speaking the languages of love

You can verbally affirm a

person for:

•Accomplishments

•Character

•Personality

Page 9: Session 2 speaking the languages of love

2. Quality Time

• You need undivided attention

• It’s about ‘togetherness’ not just proximity

• Quality conversation is important

Page 10: Session 2 speaking the languages of love

3. Physical Touch

• You feel loved by physical contact

• Body language speaks loud and clear

• To touch your body

is to touch you

• Must learn

appropriate touch

Page 12: Session 2 speaking the languages of love

Some ‘safe’ and affirming ways of

using touch:

• High five

• Hand on shoulder/arm

• Side by side ‘nudge’

• Back ‘slap’ or rub

Page 13: Session 2 speaking the languages of love

Guidelines:

• If the person draws away – back off and

give them space

• Leave a way of ‘escape’

• Keep touches brief

• Don’t be rough

• Don’t touch bare skin

4. Receiving Gifts

• Love is felt in the receiving of gifts

• Gifts are visual symbols of love

• Not the intrinsic value that

counts, but the fact that

someone cared enough to

think of you

Page 15: Session 2 speaking the languages of love

5. Acts of Service

• ‘Actions speak louder than words’

• You will feel loved when someone

gives you practical help

• It’s the emotional assurance of

being valued that is sought when

you ask for help

Page 16: Session 2 speaking the languages of love

Some Cautions:

• Don’t use love languages manipulatively

• Try not to love another person using

YOUR love language rather than THEIRS

• A person will tend to criticize in the area

they have the biggest emotional need

(note: This can be a clue to their love

language)

• If in doubt – ASK!!
