We all need to learn how to effectively and positively handle

those times when we do not follow our intended plans.

Lapses in our plan for changing behaviors are a short-term return

to our former behaviors.

A relapse is a total return to former less healthy behaviors

and attitudes.

What typically can cause a detour or lapse in your plan for healthy behavior change?

• Emotions – feeling stressed, lonely, bored, overconfident

• Situations – daily temptations, break from routine, holidays, drinking

• Lack of self-esteem; negative self-talk, self-blame• Lack of positive reinforcement

What strategies can you use for Dealing with Detours to add to your SMART plan?

• View a SMART plan as a guide, a draft• Successful behavior change can be achieved if

learning from your detours or lapses is the goal, rather than giving up and giving in

• Keep in mind how we learn and that it is a process.
