Its springtime on the south coast and with the warming days and nights you might hear or see a swarm of bees flying overhead. Or worse yet, a swarm of bees, uninvited, might just land somewhere in your yard or on your house or another place that you would prefer they didn’t land, thank you. Swarming bees are just making more room in their existing hive and multiplying themselves in

so doing. They gorge themselves on honey before they leave their old home so they can manage without food for a few days and they tend to be quite docile at this time. With the dwindling populations of honey bees that we keep hearing about, I encourage you to call one of your local beekeepers for assistance. More than likely they will be happy to hear from you, ask a few questions and help you out with your new neighbors. Please feel free to call one of the numbers below, and we thank you in advance for helping your local honeybee populations. North Curry County, Brad, 541 980 6125, Julie 541 332 7635. Born and raised in Jackson, Miss., Mike Strickland grew up listening to the great composers of that time including Henry Mancini, Vince Guaraldi, the Beatles and Burt Bacharach. His performance career started at the age of 9 when his father would encourage him to entertain dinner guests. After turning 18, he began to frequent the clubs and listened to great local blues talents including native Mississippian, B.B. King. Formal music studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston and California State University at Northridge continued to expand his musical talents. Strickland lived in Seattle for 26 years, where he built a solid career as a performer, composer and recording artist. HIGH VISIBILITY DUII ENFORCEMENT MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND Well folks, Memorial Day weekend is almost here & during this time we’ll be conducting extra DUII saturation patrols the week prior to, & during the week after May 29th, 2017. Specifically, members of the Port Orford Police Department, in conjunction with other local law enforcement agencies, including the Curry Co. Sheriff’s Office, will be dedicating extra DUII patrols. Participants in these overtime patrols are funded through the State of Oregon in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). These efforts will continue throughout the year at various times, especially during busy holiday weekends and during large civic events. Nationwide, DUII crashes and fatality rates are still quite grim to

say the least. 2015 NHTSA statistics included a figure of over 10,000 people dying as a result of alcohol-impaired crashes. That calculates out to about one fatality every 51 minutes… The statistics also show a nationwide overall DUII crash cost of somewhere north of 37 billion dollars annually. With your help, we are certain that we can significantly cut down on these sad statistics here in Oregon. One final word. Please plan ahead if you’re going to be consuming alcohol over this Memorial Day weekend. Have a designated driver built into your planned festivities. At the very least, it’s your guarantee to help alleviate a potentially very expensive headache? SOUTH COAST FOLK SOCIETY The South Coast Folk Society is excited to introduce the newly formed South Coast Dance Orchestra in a premiere weekend of dance and music. Our events are scheduled June 10th & 11th. The 26 piece orchestra is composed of local musicians from Coos and Curry County. The sole intent of creating the orchestra is to provide a local musical resource for our community, with a focus on hosting dances and musical events. The orchestra was made possible by grant funding awarded the South Coast Folk Society by The Oregon Cultural Trust, The Oregon Community Foundation and The Country Dance and Song Society. The debut of the orchestra is on Saturday June 10th in a very special Barn Dance and Quilt Show to be held at the Millicoma Middle School Gym at 260 2nd Avenue in Coos Bay. The orchestra, directed by pianist Sue Songer and fiddler Betsy Branch, editors of “The Portland

Collection: Contra Dance

Music in the Pacific Northwest” will display an energetic variety of compositions for a fun-filled evening of dance tempo tunes. Dust off those dance shoes or just come and listen to the music and enjoy the beautiful hand-crafted quilts that will adorn the walls. Local Quilters, with the guidance of Bandon’s Michelle Hagglund of “Forget Me Knots” Quilt Shop and Denise Roberts of the “Coquille Valley Quilters Guild” will exhibit their beautiful works of art, providing a stunning backdrop for the evening. Renowned caller Woody Lane, of Roseburg, will provide dance instruction for each dance. A short introduction to contra dancing will be taught promptly at 7pm. A partner is not required. Admission to the Dance is $10.00 Adults, $5.00 for students (7-18 years old) and supervised children under 6 are free. The next day, Sunday June 11th, the fun continues when the new South Coast Dance Orchestra performs at the Egyptian Theatre, 229 S Broadway, Coos Bay. This exciting fund-raiser event is a collaboration of The South Coast Folk Society with Camp Millennium. The afternoon will be filled with jigs, reels and waltzes from the orchestra. Betsy Branch and Sue Songer of the very successful “Megaband” of Portland, will have special cameo appearances in the program. The SCFS’ local Morris Dance Troupe “Side of the Tide” will also perform; other surprises are sure to entertain. Camp Millennium will host a Silent Auction to benefit their mission of providing children living with cancer admission to their very special annual summer camp. The camp features a wide variety of outdoor activities and sports, as well as Arts and Crafts programs. There is no cost to the Family of the child to attend the camp, which benefits children throughout Oregon. Admission to this noteworthy non-profit fund-
