WELCOME TO EDENTON STREET

We hope that all who pass through our doors will sense the love of Christ! It is in community with others that we grow in faith and serve the world. You are invited to learn more about this congregation and how we are in ministry to the world and one another by contacting Joy Owen, Director of Welcoming Ministries, at [email protected]. Interested in becoming a member of Edenton Street? Plan to join us for Planting Day on September 17. Contact Joy for more information.

CHILDREN AND WORSHIP

We welcome children to worship and have a basket of quiet sanctuary activities available in the entryway. As you leave, please return them to the basket.

GOOD EATSSERMON SERIES

For two miles along Blount and Person streets, from South Park through Downtown and up to Mordecai, is Raleigh’s food corridor. The Bible starts with the story of creation and God saying, “Let the earth bring forth vegetation.” Soon that vegetation contributes to the fall when man and woman eat the forbidden fruit. Good Eats, a summer sermon series, will look at famous meals, the people who ate them, and food as a metaphor (example: bread of life; land flowing with milk and honey.) Join us this summer for Good Eats!

PRAYER AND CARE

Fill out a prayer request card in the pews or email [email protected]. We also have trained Care Ministers to talk and pray with you, email [email protected].

COLLECT (8:40)

Lord, God, bless the ministries of our Church. We thank you for the variety of gifts you have bestowed upon us. Draw us together in one Spirit, that each of us may use our differing gifts as members of one body. May your Word be proclaimed with faithfulness, and may we be doers of your Word and not hearers only. For we pray this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PASTORAL PRAYER (8:40)

THE LORD’S PRAYER (8:40)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

GOD’S INVITATION AND PROMISE (10:55)

THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATER (10:55) UMH 41

LEADER: The Lord be with you.PEOPLE: And also with you.LEADER: Let us pray. Eternal Father, when nothing existed but chaos, you swept across the dark waters and brought forth light. In the days of Noah, you saved those on the ark through water. After the flood, you set in the clouds a rainbow. When you saw your people as slaves in Egypt, you led them to freedom through the sea. Their children you brought through the Jordan to the land which you promised.PEOPLE: Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Tell of God’s mercy each day.LEADER: In the fullness of time you sent Jesus, nurtured in the water of a womb. He was baptized by John and anointed by your spirit. He called his disciples to share in the baptism of his death and resurrection and to make disciples of all nations.PEOPLE: Declare his works to the nations, his glory among all the people.

LEADER: Pour out your Holy Spirit, to bless this gift of water and these who receive it, to wash away their sin and clothe them in righteousness throughout their lives, that, dying and being raised with Christ, they may share in His final victory.PEOPLE: All praise to you, Eternal Father, through your Son Jesus Christ, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns for ever. Amen.

CONGREGATIONAL PLEDGE (10:55)

LEADER: Members of the household of faith, I commend to your love and care these children, whom we this day recognize as members of the family of God. Will you endeavor so to live that they may grow in the knowledge and love of God, through our Savior Jesus Christ?PEOPLE: With God’s help, we will so order our lives after the example of Christ, that these children, surrounded by steadfast love, may be established in the faith, and confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to life eternal.

OFFERTORYWE WALK BY FAITH | MICHAEL BURKHARDT

We walk by faith, and not by sight, no gracious words we hear from Him who spoke as none e’er spoke, but we believe Him near. We may not touch his hands and side, nor follow where he trod; yet in his promise we rejoice, and cry, “My Lord and God!” Help then, O Lord, our unbelief, and may our faith abound; to call on you when you are near and seek where you are found. Lord, when our life of faith is done, in realms of clearer light we may behold you as you are, with full and endless sight. Alleluia!

GOSPEL LESSON LUKE 5:1-11

Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.” When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.

GOSPEL LESSON JOHN 21:1-19

After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, you have no fish, have you?” They answered him, “No.” He said to them, “Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off. When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” A second time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to

fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.” (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, “Follow me.”

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (8:40)APOSTLES’ CREED | UMH 881

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

One of my favorite summer hobbies is backpacking in the Blue Ridge Mountains. With Monday currently being my Sabbath day, on Sunday morning I often have a change of clothes hiding under my desk and a packed bag ready to go for a quick Sunday evening/Monday overnight trip. I love the cool waters of tumbling creeks, waking up with the sun, the hard work of three-hour climbs, and the friend you meet on the trail.

In particular, I enjoy hiking on the Appalachian Trail (AT) this time of year because of all the thru-hikers. An AT thru-hike is a 2,100 mile endeavor beginning in Northern Georgia and ending with a climatic finish atop one of the more epic mountains on the East Coast, Maine’s Mt. Katahdin. Finishing a thru-hike demands fanatic discipline, as you must commit to hiking near everyday: rain, snow, or shine, it doesn’t matter.

If you ask any AT veteran what is most special about their experience, they will almost always mention, “trail magic.” “Trail magic” is an act of pre-mediated, intentional kindness for the sake of blessing and encouraging thru-hikers along their journey. On my last overnight trip in the mountains of Virginia, I saw trail magic for the first time. A local family had spent all morning cooking and preparing to greet hikers at a point where the Blue Ridge Parkway intersected the AT near their home. They even set-up a tent on the tailgate of their truck and had laid out chairs and tables for hikers to enjoy their meals. Whenever they saw any gnarly, smelly hiker emerging out of the woods, they invited them to their makeshift restaurant with smiles and warm food.

As we continue our focus this summer on the meals we eat and the people we invite to our tables, I hope that we might practice our own sort of “trail magic.” We don’t have the AT meandering through our Raleigh backyards, but that doesn’t prevent us from blessing and encouraging the folks in our local neighborhoods with pre-mediated, intentional kindness. How will you be someone’s “trail magic” this week?

Always,Rev. Will McLeane

ESUMC Stephen Ministry 25th Anniversary and

Commissions New Stephen Ministers

Everyone needs someone who will listen and care. When a person experiences crisis or is struggling through life’s difficulties they need to tell their story and the role of a Stephen Minister is to listen, care, pray, encourage, and walk that person through their crisis. Stephen Ministers are available to care for anyone in the community experiencing a life crisis, not just church members. Whatever the situation, death, divorce, illness, relocation, financial difficulties, we care in a completely confidential way. To connect to this ministry, speak to Diane Amidon ([email protected]) or Marie Chewning ([email protected]).

Over 90 of our members have served over the years. Currently we have six active Stephen Ministers and two more to be commissioned on June 26th. Stephen Ministers go through 50 hours of initial training over 20-weeks. The topics include listening skills, feelings, assertiveness, confidentiality, Christian caregiving and prayer. They commit to serving for two years; however, many choose to serve longer because they find they receive as much from the ministry as they give. There is something special knowing that God has put you in a certain place at a certain time in order to help someone during their time of crisis.

Come by the Commons at 12:15 on the 26th to celebrate this Caring Ministry’s 25th anniversary and our two new Stephen Ministers!
