Mary, Star of
Evangelization
Help us Be
Missionary
Disciples
We did it thanks to all of you. Our report to the California Catholic Conference of Bishops and our insurance company has been
completed as of August. You may be interested in knowing that we had 10,095 students in our programs. We are down in num-
bers by 1,405 from the year before. We all know this is for a variety of reasons. Even so evangelization to our families is most
important. You may want to set up a team of volunteers to work on this as a year round project.
Our Beginning of the year meeting comes the theme of family catechesis and can help us imagine our programs in the light of
evangelization and meeting the needs of families.

Theme: Stay with Us
Catechetical Sunday
The ministry of the Word is a
fundamental element of
evangelization through all its stages,
because it involves the proclamation of
Jesus Christ, the eternal Word of God
"The word of God nourishes both
evangelizers and those who are being
evangelized so that each one may
continue to grow in his or her Christian
life" (National Directory for Catech-
esis [NDC] [Washington, DC: United
States Conference of Catholic Bish-
ops, 2005], no. 17).
This year, the Church will celebrate Cate-chetical Sunday on September 15, 2019. The 2019 theme will be "Stay With Us." Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonder-ful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate them-selves to this mission as a community of faith.

Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Green Vestments Readings: Ex 32:7-11,13-14/ 1 TM 1:12-17/ LK 15:1-32/PS 51:3-4,12-13, 17, 19 2 Theme: "Stay With Us"
Why do we celebrate Catechetical Sunday? In 1935, the Vatican published On the Better Care and Promotion of Catechetical Education, a document that asks every country to acknowledge the importance of the Church’s teaching ministry and to honor those who serve the Christian com-munity as catechists. For the first few years after Catechetical Sunday was estab-lished, National Catechetical Congresses were held in conjunction with the cele-bration. Beginning in 1971, the USCCB’s Department of Education began produc-ing materials to help parishes celebrate the event at the local level. When the Committee on Catechesis, now named the Committee of Evangelization and Catech-esis, was named by the Conference as a standing Committee, it continued to pub-lish Catechetical Sunday materials each year. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has designated the third Sunday in September as Catechetical Sunday. Those whom the community has designat-ed to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their minis-try. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate them-selves to this mission as a community of faith.
For materials and resources (in English and Spanish) contact USCCB Commission certificates are also avail-able for your catechists.

On August 3rd we welcomed almost 50 catechists and faith formation leaders from 3 counties to this year’s Spanish Master Catechist Program at the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center. This is a five week course. The title of the course is “A Spirituality and Discernment that makes present the Reign of the God of Life.” Following the USCCB guidelines for the formation of Catechists this course offers a theology and spirituality of discernment that will assist catechists in their own personal spiritual life as they carry out their vocation as a catechist within a parish communal setting. It is inspiring and encouraging to see their enthusiastic response and their thirst for spiritual renewal. The course will end with a Retreat in June, 2020. Anyone interested in signing up is more than welcome!
Peace and All Good,
Sister Graciela Martinez, osf

do the “work” of

because this is something that
embraces our whole life. It means leading peo-
