Welcome to our 2012/13 Prospectus

Whether you are looking to learn new skills, improve your job prospects, take up a new interest or return to learning, we have over 200 classes on offer in more than 20 locations across Neath Port Talbot.
What’s new this year? New classes e.g. Criminal Psychology, Hygiene for Salons, Cloud Computing and Baking is a piece of Cake etc.

Important Information All classes are correct at the time of print. We may change or add to the courses advertised, for instance where a course is under or over-subscribed. New courses may be introduced throughout the year. Learners’ interests are taken into consideration where a change is made.
A class needs a minimum of 8 learners enrolled to run, so if you are interested in attending a course, why not bring a friend?
If you see a course that you like but it’s not being run in your area, please let us know as we may be able to arrange a class if there is enough interest.

Working in Partnership Adult Community Learning is partly funded through a franchise agreement with Neath Port Talbot College.
In order to ensure the best for all of our learners we also work in partnership with a number of other organisations to provide a high quality learning experience throughout all of our courses. These include the Learner Support Service (see page 3), Enterprise in the Valleys (see pg 4), Community Development and Projects (see page 6), and many more.
Adult Community Learning are members of the Adult Learning Network and sit on the Learning Promotion Group in conjunction with many other learning providers in the Neath Port Talbot area. This group is supported by NIACE Dysgu Cymru(National Institute for Adult Continuing Education) to promote adult learning through different events throughout the year. For example the group have recently hosted the Adult Learner of the Year Awards (see pictures)

CourseFeesandFinancialAssistanceAll courses: £120 per 30 weeks paid in two instalments or one instalment of £100 paid at time of enrolment.

Some activities from last year include:
Christmas Fun - A range of activities including a visit from Henson the Hedgehog, a chance to make a Christmas Floral arrangement and of course a visit from Santa!
Family Fun Day - All schools involved in the Family Programmes were invited to a fun day in Margam park.
School Courses - Classes have included topics such as phonics, early reading, writing and maths. All activities are designed to complement the Foundation Phase.
How to join - Look out for a letter from your school, or ask your class teacher if your school is taking part.
Family learning encourages families to become involved in their children’s learning. It gives families the opportunity to
learn new skills while at the same time helping their children in a fun way. The courses are free and are delivered across
Neath Port Talbot in various schools. Not only parents but carers and grandparents can take part too.
Winners: Jemma Clement who originally started with Family Learning has won Learner of the Year 2012 and has started
her own child minding business - Little Jem’s Daycare.Croeserw won the Family Learning Award 2011.
*NEW THIS YEAR*Family Learning have piloted a project
introducing iPads to the Family Learning programme to support Communication
using Mobile Technology.

ArtDrawing Courses are suitable for beginners or more advanced learners. All techniques will be covered and various media will be used - soft pencils, charcoal, oil, pastels, watercolour, pen & ink etc. Portrait or figure studies - ask at enquiry.
Art / Darlun Developing art reflecting learning, understanding & nationality. These art classes can be taught and/or assessed through the medium of Welsh.
Painting For all budding artists or those seeking to improve their skills using pastels and water-colour techniques or oils—ask at enquiry.
ArtMixedContent Also available: courses using mixed content.
FabricCrafts Ever wanted to learn a new craft or develop an
existing one - how to make your own curtains, or how to embroider, crochet and patchwork? If so this is the course for you. The classes are workshop based and consist of practical demonstrations and exercises, with professional tips and advice. Recycled materials used wherever possible.
JewelleryMaking Learn how to make your own unique items
of jewellery using beads and crystal, with the opportunity to learn how to run your own small business. Learn all the main bead weaving techniques and start to design your own pieces to your requirements.
MakedoandMend Save Money - STOP throwing things away!
Turn Junk into Jewellery, curtains into clothes and rags into rugs. Projects will include: winter necklaces, hand painted tealight holders, Christmas decorations and many, many more!
CardMaking Learn how to make gift cards, invitations and gift
boxes for all occasions, for your friends, family, work colleagues, with the opportunity to run your own profit making cottage industry.
Sugarcraft Starting at level 1, learn the basics of sugar
paste work, marzipan models and sugar flowers. Improve skills at levels 2 & 3. The opportunity to progress to City & Guilds qualifications is available. Amaze yourself, family and friends by what you can do!
StainedGlass A craft course for beginners and improvers to
learn the basics of designing and making stained glass windows, light catchers, vases, mirrors etc. Plus - the opportunity to try selling your work.
Mosaics Learn how to use a variety of materials: mosaic
tiles; pebbles; slate; marble; glass; china etc for making wall hangings, trivet stands, mirror frames, splash backs, paving slabs and more.
Woodcarving Learn the art of wood carving. Projects include
lovespoons, model cars, walking sticks and much more!

Computers You will be introduced gently to the
fascinating world of the computer. You will gain confidence in both using the computer and making the most of its many useful features. This will include word processing, desktop publishing, web browsing and E mail. You may even like to give free online video link a try out!
If you are an absolute beginner with using a computer or want to brush up on your skills this is the class for you. From switching the computer ‘on’ to taming the mouse – it’s all covered. If you are looking for employment this course can help you gain necessary skills on using the computer.

divided into manageable sections and covering key topics from eggs and baking to vegetables and quick-cook meats. This is all supported by a range of fact sheets dealing with other basics and essentials such as:
Kitchen basics: what equipment you need and the best way to stock your store cupboard, fridge and freezer; Food safety and hygiene: knife safety, fridge management and rotation.
How to shop cleverly: shopping lists, seasonal food, planning ahead.
Ingredients: preparation, how to understand confusing food labels.

FoodSafetyAwardThe EDI Food Safety Award is an
industry recognised qualification and has been developed with the Sector Skills Councils.
Under UK legislation, anyone who handles food as part of their job role must be supervised and instructed and/or trained in food hygiene relevant to their job role.
This award is available at level 1, 2 and 3 for both the Catering Industry and the Retail Industry.
Available throughout the year in various locations, please call 01639 898581 to find out when and where.
ConstructionPlumbingWould you like to learn the basics of plumbing
maintenance? Well this is the course for you! In 20 weeks you will gain sufficient knowledge to understand how to fault find and repair various taps and valves within your own home!’
PlasteringWould you like to develop skills and knowledge
about plastering?Topics include fixing of plaster sheet materials,
internal solid work, preparing a safe working area and a surface for plastering. Prepare, fix and skim plasterboard, fix coving and dado to an acceptable standard, efficient working practices and health and safety.
BrickworkLearners will develop skills in building half brick
and one brick walls, corners and stopped ends. Essential knowledge for the craft of bricklaying.
Topics include brick and block walling, materials handling, wall details, groundwork, preparing a safe working area, efficient working practices and Health and Safety.
Suitable for learners at all levels.

experience for your own children and other children within the school environment.
The Level 2 learning programme will teach you the necessary skills to help children’s reading, as well as giving you practical experience of using these skills
