August 27th – The feast of Saint Monica

“Remember me with your prayers at the Altar” Saint Monica’s word’s to her son Saint Augustine

Dear Parishioners, With the opening of the 2017 Mass Book, a perennial issue has once again occurred. As you may or

may not know, the Mass Book is a book listing all the Masses for the upcoming year. In this book, Mass intentions are placed. When an individual comes to the rectory asking for a Mass to be said or a Mass card the first question the receptionist asks is… “announced or unannounced?” An announced Mass is a sched-uled Sunday or weekday Mass that includes the mention of whom the Holy Mass is being said for. During the Mass…usually during the prayer of the faithful, the name of the person for whom that Mass is being of-fered, is announced. Unannounced masses are more common for those who may be attending a wake service and wish to offer a Mass card… a Mass to be said for the soul of faithfully departed. Saint Helen Parish has an arrangement with Fr. Joe Zwosta to say all the unannounced Masses while he studies in Rome. So, a list of names is sent to Father Joe and he offers each of his daily Masses in Rome for each person on the list. (now all this may seem rudimentary… but here is the tricky part!) When the Mass Book opens for 2017 many people come to the Rectory with very specific days to

have Masses said for loved ones; an anniversary of death, a special holiday, a birthday, an anniversary of marriage, etc. This is where a difficulty arises. There are about 3000 families in Saint Helen Parish and a limited number of Masses said in a year. In any given year there are about 600 (estimated) announced Mass-es depending where holidays fall. This is why there are limits placed on how many Masses one individual may request when opening the Mass book. The perennial problem is that as the year progresses all the Mass-es quickly become taken and eventually someone shows up at the rectory in July and requests a mass to be said for a loved one in December and the response is we are all booked (literally). To alleviate this issue there are multiple intention Masses for the recently deceased once a week (as

the church permits), but these Masses become full as well! The alternative of an unannounced Mass for some reason does not suffice many individuals…which by the way has the same efficacious effect as an an-nounced Mass; which is to offer the Holy Mass and assist the souls of the Dead… a spiritual work of mercy. In a recent conversation with the parish staff I asked… “Why doesn’t the parish have a Purgatorial

Society”? My attentive staff members responded “we used to!” Well, now we do!!! A Purgatorial Society is not a club! A Purgatorial Society is any association of Catholics who work

together to assist the souls of the deceased through prayer. Once a month a Mass will be said for any mem-bers enrolled in the Purgatorial Society. Similar to the Father’s Day and Mother’s Day Novenas the names of those enlisted in the Purgatorial Society will be placed on the Altar and listed in the bulletin for that week. Beginning in January 2017 all parishioners will have the opportunity to enroll the names of

loved ones in the Purgatorial Society. The Purgatorial Society Mass will be held on the last Friday of each month. The offering to be enrolled in the Purgatorial Society is $120 per name (a total of 12 Masses for the year will be said for your loved one). Having a Purgator ial Society is wonderful way of living out the Scriptures where it says in the book of Maccabees “it is a holy and pious thing to do…to pray for the dead”. Enrollment in the 2017 Purgatorial Society Monthly Masses will begin when the Mass Book opens September 13th, at 9:30AM. I also believe that having the Purgatorial Society will be a relief for those who desire to have their

loved ones remembered throughout the year at the Sacrifice of the Mass. Will a Purgatorial Society relieve the perennial issues of the Mass book…No, but I know it will

bring me comfort to know that I personally will be enrolling the names of my relatives in the Purgatorial So-ciety so that they may be remembered with prayers all year long at God’s Altar.
