marist-SWd a pleasure to call; Randolph deserves player of the year considerationWhat an amazing finish to the Georgia

Public Broadcasting Friday Night Game of the Week between Marist and Southwest DeKalb on the GPB webcast. In case you missed it, War Eagle junior Austin Hardin nailed a 59-yard field goal with just three sec-onds remaining to help send Marist to 2-1 on the season. The kicker, who also plays on defense, was drilling field goals from 60 during the half-time warm-ups, but the pressurized situation of a game-winning kick made the feat even more impressive. Honestly, the kick would have been good from 65 the way Hardin booted it. Score Atlanta as well as the AJC cov-ered the story very well, but to see the pure joy on the kicker’s young face as well as the faces of his teammates was truly something that I was proud to be a part of as I called the game for GPB along with Bob Houghton. If you missed the kick, you can catch the entire game on replay on gpb.org/sports or visit the link on gaprepnews.com.

CroWell CroWs oN esPN2 … Hardin’s long kick wasn’t the only out-standing Georgia prep performance broadcast to the world last Friday. Isaiah Crowell of Carver-Columbus rushed for 185 yards and scored three touchdowns in Carver’s win over LaGrange on ESPN2. Crowell utterly domi-nated in the contest to the extent the AJC and the GHSF Daily openly wondered if the race for player of the year in Georgia is already over. Crowell has played well as Carver is undefeated and has knocked off three-time defending-champion Buford, thanks in large part to the talented young back. Having played just four games, Crowell is nearly at 1000 yards according to GHSF Daily and the article predicted that he could be the first wire-to-wire choice since 2004 when La-Grange’s Tray Blackmon won. Crowell has been dominant, but I must

throw the name of Brian Randolph into the conversation. The Kell two-way standout has seemingly scored the game-winning touch-down in each of his team’s first four games. Randolph will no doubt play in the defensive secondary at Tennessee, but he has been light-ing it up from the offensive backfield his se-nior season after missing some time last year due to injuries. Randolph is healthy again and he is reminding everyone why, as a sopho-more, he was tabbed as one to keep an eye on in the 2011 signing class.

sAturdAY sPeCiAl … Speaking of high school football, Geor-gia Public Broadcasting will be teaming up with the Valdosta Daily Times on Saturday, Oct. 2 for a special webcast of the Valdosta Wildcats/ML King Lions game at Hallford Stadium. Earlier this season, the Valdosta newspaper carried the GPB webcast of the Lowndes/McEachern game and it was such a success with over 2000 chat hits that the Val-dosta Daily Times has partnered with GPB for this special Saturday webcast. The game will feature several members of the Score 44 including Jay Rome and Malcolm Mitchell of Valdosta and Demarco Robinson of ML King. There are also several other players that may make future Score 44 lists so be sure and log on Saturday, Oct. 2, starting at 7 p.m. A lot of work goes on before a football webcast on GPB or a radio broadcast on 790 The Zone or 680 the Fan. The announcers will usually speak with the coaches, and at GPB we acquire a two-deep depth chart and also interview the coaches on GPB Sports Central XL. We also read up on every game the two teams have played over the course of the sea-son and we study up on the season statistics. I would assume the same process is done for NFL and college games, but sometimes it is hard to tell on some secondary games.

As I watched the Georgia/Arkansas game last week it seemed as though the ESPN announcing crew decided that it would only discuss AJ Green’s absence and the fact that Ryan Mallet had never won an SEC road game. The crew harped on these points over and over and over and over and over… to the point that I wanted to vomit. After every com-pletion, a shot of AJ; after every incomple-tion, a shot of AJ. Then, when Arkansas was on the field, “Ryan Mallet has never won a big SEC road game,” was said so many times I felt sorry for the kid. The game had so many angles that could have been explored, such as Bobby Petrino’s first trip back to Georgia since his Falcons departure, Arkansas coming in ranked, Ar-kansas’ improved defense, Georgia’s fresh-man QB in his first home SEC game, but for whatever reason, the crew and the producers engaged in lazy journalism and just talked about two players. I have worked on numer-ous play-by-play crews and none has been as lazy as that telecast was last Saturday. I would have been embarrassed to come into a game with only two storylines. Pick it up guys, we are three weeks into the season.

too MuCh brAVes … As football is starting to dominate the airwaves, baseball is coming down the home-stretch, and I was surprised at 680 The Fan’s approach to the “Braves vs. high school foot-ball” decision. As I left Hallford Stadium after the exciting finish, I was surprised to hear a promo for 680’s high school football coverage airing on the two Fan sister stations instead of 680 itself. I understand that the sta-tion spent a bunch of money on the rights to the Braves broadcasts, but the game was over and the postgame was over, so why run even more postgame with the Braves Wrap-up call-in show? Why not slide over to high school

football which is on everyone’s mind at 10:45 on a Friday night? As much as I love Sports Central and Sports Central XL contributor Tommy Palm-er and his Friday Night show, which airs on 790 The Zone, I really enjoyed hearing about the metro-area games on 680’s old wrap-up show. There was a large round-table with multiple voices weighing in on the night’s action with local callers describing the games. Most of Palmer’s reports are from games outside of the metro-area. While that is great to hear about those games, some-times I just want to hear people talk about the Atlanta games. I just wish 680 would consider bringing back the prep round-up show and stick the SECOND Braves post-game show on one of the sister stations. We don’t need THAT much Braves dissection. Proctor can be reached at [email protected].

can YOU BELiEVE......HE Said THaT?

“the most overrated Qb in the his-tory of the NFl? brett Favre…oK, how about Matt Cassel?” that was Will the thrill of 790 the Zone, as the assistant producer was given a quick minute of airtime last sunday on the Ford Foot-ball show, part of the Zone’s Falcons coverage. Will, who helps out with the production of score Atlanta sports sun-day wasn’t quite ready for his on-air time with steak and John Michaels and he was subsequently given a hard time. in his defense though, he has driven home some valid points in the past and deserves a bit more air-time, as long as he is prepared for it in the future.

Retired coach reflects on all things college football, “the greatest game of all”Not many people in sports have done what

Johnny Majors has. The former Tennessee halfback and head coach has been voted All-American as a player, played on an SEC championship team, and coached an SEC champion and a national champion. He also coached a Heisman win-ner in Tony Dorsett at Pittsburgh. The highly accomplished college football legend starred at Tennessee as a tailback from 1954-1956 and finished second in the Heisman balloting to Paul Hor-nung of Notre Dame. That year, Majors’ Vols were 10-0 before the Heisman was awarded while Hor-nung’s Irish finished 2-8. Majors then got into coach-ing, eventually getting the head job at Iowa State, then Pitts-burgh. It was at Pitt where Ma-jors won his national champion-ship in 1976. The year after, Tennessee brought him home to Knoxville where he would coach the Vols from 1977-1992. And he still loves college football. “I watch college football all the time,” Majors said in an exclusive interview with Score Atlanta. “I think it’s the greatest game of all.” Majors spoke at the Touch-down Club of Atlanta Monday where he touched on several college football-related topics. Like Bobby Bowden, who spoke last week, Majors touched on modern pressure on coaches, but came up with a different outlook than did Bowden. While the former FSU coach said pressure is much heavier now, Majors seemed to think it was similar to when he first started roaming the sidelines in the late 50’s. “No, I don’t think it’s changed that much since I started coaching,” said Majors, when asked about the pressure on coaches. “There’s always been close coverage of coaches in col-lege football and there’s always been critical alumni and so-called fans. They’ll be with you, as the old saying goes, win or tie.” However, Majors did say there are more people involved in criticizing coaches these days. “There’s a lot more resources (now) for

people to second-guess and a lot more people commenting on it,” said Majors. “I say that with the internet, more commentators on tele-vision, more cable television networks and more televised games.”

MAJors oN GeorGiA … The Lynchburg, Tenn. native – where he

said “there’s still only one stoplight and I re-member when they put it in” – had some good things to say about the amount of football tal-ent there is in the state of Georgia. “I think the state of Georgia is one of the best football states in America, as far as the best chance to win,” said Majors. “I think that Texas, Southern Cal and Ohio State are three of the best jobs in America because of the tal-ent they have locally. Georgia is close behind that, along with Alabama and LSU.” Majors also said something that may hit close to home for Georgia fans, who have gone through two coaches since Vince Dool-ey retired and are getting hot under the collar about the current coach. “You’ve gotta be a bad coach to mess up Georgia’s situation,” said Majors. “They have had some good coaches and they have

had some not-so-good coaches. But it is one of the best jobs in the country.” Like Bowden, who explained as much in an interview last week with Gil Tyree of Georgia Public Broadcasting, Majors knows a lot about the type of talent produced in Georgia as he tried to recruit in the state for many years as both an assistant and head

coach at Tennessee. Throughout the modern history of Vol foot-ball, the coaches have had to re-cruit outside the state to get the type of talent needed to compete at a high level in the SEC. And Georgia, with the border being less than two hours from Knox-ville, has always been a targeted area for Tennessee recruiters. “Georgia talent is very im-portant to Tennessee’s program,” said Majors. “Willie Gault (from Griffin) is a great example. He was one of the greatest athletes I’ve ever coached. We had a lot of good players from Georgia. Ten-nessee’s had to go out of state, going back to General (former Tennessee head coach Bob) Ney-land’s time. We’ve had to recruit out of state. More so than (the universities of) Georgia or Ala-bama or Florida.”

uNPleAsANt outster … Despite having some suc-

cess at Tennessee in winning 116 games, three SEC titles and earning 11 bowl bids, Majors was forced to resign during the 1992 season after being sent to the hospital for heart sur-gery. Majors missed the first three games of the season, which were victories over SW Louisiana, Georgia and Florida, and then came back for the final eight regular season games of the year, in which the Vols went 5-3. “I was out the first three games,” ex-plained Majors. “I had been promised a new seven-year contract the day before I went to the hospital. Tennessee won the first three games, my assistant coach took the job as in-terim coach, but the administration I worked for wasn’t the most trustworthy or reliable because they gave those three victories to the assistant coach.” Majors is still a bit peeved about how his

ouster was played out. “I was more than misled, I was deceived about the contract.” Majors also feels like his administration at the time, including athletics director Doug Dickey and University president Joe Johnson, despite obvious pressure from UT boosters and interim head coach Phil Fulmer, Majors blames his employers at the time. “Boosters don’t fire coaches,” said Majors. “It’s according to how much guts the administrators have. They hire and fire coaches. I didn’t have reliable or trustwor-thy (bosses).” But Majors has since made up with UT and been back to campus. All’s well that ends well, as they say, and Majors will hopefully be remembered by Tennessee fans as a hero rather than a bitter former coach. Black can be reached at [email protected].

thirty PGA golfers visit Atlanta this weekend for the tour Championship at east lake Golf Club. the tourna-ment is the fourth in a series which will determine the winner of the Fedex Cup. Phil Mickelson won the event last year, while tiger Woods took home the Fedex Cup. Going into the weekend, Matt Kuchar has the most Fedex Cup points.

Majors, who coached a na-tional champion at Pittsburgh and finished second in the heisman race as a player, professed his love for the college game as well as discussing the amount of talent in the state of Geor-gia. he also said that only a “bad coach” could ruin the uGA job. bY briAN JoNes bY riCKY diMoNbulldoG blues: it’s been a while since uGA has been 0-2 in the seC, but that’s the reality that we’re in, as the dawgs got beat by south Caro-lina and Arkansas to start the season 1-2. Georgia will take on Mississippi state saturday night and, if uGA loses, there will be a lot of upset people in Ath-ens other than the players and coaches.

bAttle iN suPerdoMe: the Falcons and the New orleans saints do battle for the first time this season at the louisiana superdome sunday afternoon and the Falcons are looking to build on a 41-7 win over Arizona. this will be a tough and hard-fought ball game, but i think the Falcons will win it and give drew brees and com-pany their first loss of the year.

JACKets bACK oN trACK: After suffering a tough loss to Kan-sas, Georgia tech bounced back with a come-from-behind win over North Carolina to start the ACC with a 1-0 re-cord. tech will look to go 2-0 saturday when they take on North Carolina state on the Flats. it’s a game the Jackets should win, but they will have to watch out for Wolfpack Qb russell Wilson.

Wild CArd At stAKe: As of Wednesday, the braves are five games back of the Philadelphia Phillies for the Nl east lead with the magic number at 6. so if the braves want to play in the postseason, they will have to make it as the wild card. they just have to take one game at a time and it starts with Washington Friday night.

FridAY NiGht shoWdoWN: there are two games to watch for on the high school football scene Friday night. Kell looks to remain undefeated when they take on hiram who is also unbeaten. in AA, buford looks to get revenge on region rival lovett who defeated the Wolves last year in the regular season. it should be another exciting night of action.

Jason SnellingWith Jerious Norwood and Michael Turner injured, Snelling filled in admira-bly against Arizona, rushing 24 times for a career-high 129 yards while catch-ing five passes for 57 more yards. He also scored three touchdowns and was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week due to his performance.

matt diazThe Braves managed few hits against the Phil-lies Monday night, but Diaz at least made a nice tackle. During the seventh inning, Diaz brought down a fan who had jumped onto the field. “I figured he’d be better off getting tripped than tased,” the left fielder said.

Georgia StateThe Panthers could not quite pull off the upset last Saturday, but they did well to take Jackson-ville State, No. 4 in the FCS rankings, to over-time in a 34-27 loss. Running back Travis Evans rushed for 54 yards and a touchdown and State turned the ball over only once.

norwood’s acLLast year it was Harry Douglas and Peria Jerry. This year it’s Norwood and Kerry Meier. Norwood joined the rookie wide-out on Atlanta’s injured reserve list after it was learned he sustained a torn ACL in Sunday’s win over the Cardinals. Nor-wood also missed six games last sea-son due to injury.

nL East free-fallThe Phillies, who trailed the Braves in the divi-sion from May until early September, have a five-game lead after victories over Atlanta on Monday and Tuesday. Philly’s magic number is six as of Wednesday afternoon and the Braves’ wild-card lead has dwindled to just one game over San Diego and three games over Colorado.

Torre commentsOutgoing Dodgers manager Joe Torre remarked earlier this week that he is “curious” about the Mets’ managerial position and said, “I hope the phone will be ringing.” He then said he would lis-ten to a job offer “without question.” Problem is, the position is not currently available.

a cOacH’S diaRY: JEFF mEaSOR This week our region play starts, and we have a tough game against West Forsyth. West is a new school with a young group of kids, but they have a tremendous coaching staff and they have a group of players who play very hard and will be a very tough team to beat. Hopefully, our kids are ready to play and match West’s intensity level. This week is homecoming for us, and with homecoming comes the normal weekly distractions. As a coach, you really try to keep the kids focused on the game at hand, and limit the off-the-field stuff as much as possible. However, it is a slippery slope because you want to encourage the student body who is trying its hardest to sup-

port the football team. Like a lot of things in life, keeping everything in balance is necessary,

and sometimes difficult, but in the end it is worth while. Last week we played

Wheeler, and that game serves as ex-hibit A for what a head coach goes thru emotionally. We played one of the best defensive halves of season, while our offense played its worst. It is an interesting position to be in at halftime when one half of your team is playing lights out, and the

other half of your team is playing ter-rible. Hopefully, I don’t have to experi-

ence that again. Centennial High School head coach Jeff

Measor will share his thoughts here throughout the football season.

GSU broadcaster’s book details careers of great and not-so-great Jewish major leaguersSandy Koufax is known for being one of the

best pitchers to ever play baseball. He won the Cy Young Award three times and the World Se-ries four times with the Brooklyn/L.A. Dodgers. He’s also known for being the most fa-mous Jewish baseball player. But there is another pitcher of the Jewish faith who has more wins than Koufax, who has 165. Ken Holtzman, who played for five major league clubs from 1965-1979, won 174 games and was a two-time All-Star selection. This is just one of the stories Dave Co-hen features in his new book “Matzoh Balls and Baseballs,” for which he interviewed past Jewish Major League Baseball players who had successful careers as well as others whose careers did not go as planned. “I came across some interesting guys,” said Cohen, who does play-by-play for Geor-gia State football, basketball and baseball. “I decided to publish 17 interviews, but since July when this book came out, I’ve done two other interviews that I will add to a second edition in two to three years.”CuriositY is KeY … How did he get the idea to start a book where its focus is on Jewish baseball players? It started back in 2003 when the Georgia State alum went to a book signing for “Cup of Cof-

fee: The Very Short Career of 18 Major League Pitchers” written by Rob Trucks. Larry Yellen, who pitched 14 games for the Houston Colt .45s in 1963 and 1964, was at the event. Cohen talked to Yellen and discovered the former Major Leaguer was Jewish. From there, Cohen started to wonder just how many other former major leaguers are Jewish. “A light bulb went (on),” Cohen said. “I know about Koufax and I read about Hank Greenberg. They are the only Jewish ball players in the Hall of Fame. I just got the idea after seeing Rob’s book. It started to make me wonder who are some of these former Jewish ball players and how did they leave their mark on the game, if at all?” Yellen was one of the first players to be interviewed and was followed by Ron Bloomberg, an Atlanta native who played with the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox in the 70’s. After that, Cohen inter-viewed Elliot Maddox, an African-American ball player who converted to Judaism in 1975. From there, he went on to find out since Major League Baseball was established, there have been only around 200 players who are Jewish. That is amazing because the league has been around for over 140 years. “I wanted to know about their careers,” Cohen added. “Some of them did not have

great careers and some of them did.”MeetiNG With leGeNds … Some Jewish players had solid careers, like Koufax and Holtzman, but for others like Yellen, careers were much shorter and less prosperous. Some players have made names for themselves by working with some of the all-time greats. Cohen also had a chance to interview Mike Epstein, a former major leaguer who is now a hit-ting instructor and runs hitting clinics all across the country. Epstein played for the Washing-ton Senators under manager Ted Williams. “He was a pretty good hitter,” Cohen said of Ep-stein. “But I think a lot of it stems from his relationship and the time that he spent learning (from) and playing for Williams. It set him on that path.” Another player that got a chance to play and connect with some of the legends of the game is Al Rosen, who won the AL

MVP award in 1953 with the Cleveland In-dians. Rosen was teammates with legendary Negro League player Satchel Paige in 1948. “Al Rosen didn’t get to know [Paige] that well,” Cohen said. “They were only to-gether for a handful of months. It’s another example of the where some of these guys, if they weren’t great themselves, they came in contact with great players and players you

and I would describe as [great] from a historical standpoint.”

The book has been on shelves for a few months and is starting to get some recognition. It was featured in “Baseball Digest” and re-ceived high reviews. While Cohen appreciates the attention that it’s getting, he knows this book was more for his personal knowledge of these players than trying to be-come a best-selling author. “It’s not a New York Times Bestseller,” Cohen stated. “Personally, I wanted to hear to stories. mickelson, Kuchar in contention as Tour championship returns to East LakeThe 2010 FedEx Cup championship.

$11.35 million. Player of the Year honors. The No. 1 ranking in the world. Arguably the fifth-most significant tournament title on the PGA Tour. That — and more — is what’s at stake this weekend in Atlanta as East Lake Golf Club hosts its 10th Tour Championship. After its inception in 1987, the Tour Cham-pionship bounced around the country from loca-tion to location. Starting in 1997, it alternated between Champions Golf Club in Houston, Tex. and East Lake. But no site was superior to East Lake, the annual home of this prestigious and uniquely lucrative event since 2004.

the FedeX CuP … While the Tour Championship has al-ways been the final stop on the PGA Tour each season, its importance was ameliorated with the 2007 creation of the FedEx Cup. Similar to the Sprint Cup in NASCAR, the FedEx Cup is a season-long competition in which the golfer who accumulates the most points based on his PGA Tour performances wins the title. A playoff format, shorter but compa-rable to NASCAR’s Chase for the Cup, was adopted in 2007 to ensure maximum drama throughout the latter stages of the FedEx Cup. The Tour Championship is the last of four playoff tournaments and is exclusive to the current Top 30 point-getters. Four weeks ago, 125 golfers had their sights set on 2010 glory, but the postseason field dwindled to 100 for the second tournament and was cut to 70 a week later for the BMW Championship, which ultimately determined the Tour Cham-pionship participants. If golf fans thought the Tour Champi-onship reached a zenith in 2007, they were wrong. In fact, the season finale is even big-ger now. An unforeseen issue arose in 2008 when Vijay Singh so thoroughly dominated the playoffs that he clinched the FedEx Cup title even before his arrival at East Lake. Two years later, a similar feat is mathemati-cally impossible. PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem promptly designed a rule in which points are reset heading into the Tour

Championship such that all 30 players have a chance to win the FedEx Cup and the Top 5 control their own destiny. “I think that this last year and this year in terms of competition, we have been very pleased with the results,” Finchem said during his Tuesday press conference. “We like the fact that the competition can’t be over before we get here to the Tour Championship. We like the fact, though, at the same time that if you play well early enough in the year, you can cush-ion yourself against a downward spike in your relative playing. We wanted the points to be structured in such a way that when you come here to the Tour Championship that you have a competitive home-field advantage if you’re seeded higher than the next player, and we think that that now is in place.”

ForMer JACKet leAds the WAY … There is a familiar face — at least to Georgia Tech fans — atop the current FedEx Cup standings, and it’s not Tiger Woods. It’s Matt Kuchar, a former Yellow Jacket who burst onto the PGA scene at the 1998 Mas-ters as the reigning U.S. Amateur champion. Kuchar finished tied for 21st at Augusta, the best finish by an amateur in 20 years. After 12 years — 10 as a professional — mostly wrought with frustration, includ-ing a stint on the Nationwide Tour, Kuchar has stormed into the upper echelon of the game. He has won two titles in the past 11 months, including The Barclays to open this season’s FedEx Cup playoffs. He leads the 2010 PGA Tour in scoring average (69.57), owns the most Top 10 finishes (11), sits atop the money list ($4,753,727) and is No. 1 in the FedEx Cup standings. Kuchar was more than 600 points clear of Dustin Johnson (4,935 to 4,299) prior to the reset, but the top two are now Kuchar with 2,500 and Johnson with 2,250. “If the points had not been reset, I would have a pretty reasonable lead,” Kuchar noted in an interview with Golf.com earlier this week. “But I’m still happy to have the No. 1 seed. I think it’s the best position to be in going into the Tour Championship. I wish the points had not reset, but overall I think it’s a

good system.” Although he is in prime position to garner PGA Tour Player of the Year honors, Kuchar insists his current focus is on this tournament. “I hear people throw (POY con-tention) around, and it’s nice to be mentioned for something like that. But my goal right now is to just win the Tour Championship. If I play well, everything will take care of itself.”

No tiGer, but A stroNG Field … Kuchar, of course, has plenty of competition this weekend at East Lake, both for the tournament title and the FedEx Cup trophy. Woods, the 2007 and 2009 FedEx champion, did not qualify, but world No. 2 Phil Mickelson (pictured) and world No. 4 Steve Stricker are present in At-lanta along with Johnson, Paul Casey, and Ernie Els. Johnson and Casey control their own des-tiny while Els (eighth) and Mickelson (10th) are within realistic strik-ing distance. Mickelson shot a 9-under 271 to win last season’s Tour Championship. He started the tournament in 14th place in the Fe-dEx Cup standings and climbed to second as Woods did enough to hold onto first with a second-place showing in Atlanta. With a vic-tory this weekend, Mickelson would take over the No. 1 ranking in the world from Woods, would be the favorite for Player of the Year, and

could win the FedEx Cup. “An additional win would add a lot,” the lefty said during his Wednesday press conference, alluding to his triumph at the Masters. “If I were able to win another event, which we only have really one more, then that would add a lot more to the year…. A lot can come of this week, and whoever plays well has a lot to gain.” And that’s the understatement of the year. Photo of Phil Mickelson courtesy of The Tour Championship. Dimon can be reached

crawford missing as camp approachesThe Jamal Crawford story appears to

be continuing into the early parts of training camp. Although the offensive sparkplug has said he won’t hold out of camp or create a distraction, he did not show up for early physicals last week. With training camp starting on Sept. 27, Crawford’s situation is surely one to keep an eye on. The Hawks may also be in the mar-ket for a few more players. But those players will likely have to make the team in training camp. According to the At-lanta Journal Constitution, veterans Jerry Stackhouse and former Hawk Anthony Johnson scrimmaged with the team dur-ing informal workouts. Stackhouse was a pleasant surprise after joining the Mil-waukee Bucks at midseason, still show-ing some pop by averaging 8.5 a game. Johnson is a well-respected journeyman point guard who has had three different spells with Atlanta, including his most recent one that ended with him being traded to Sacramento for Mike Bibby. Meanwhile, two former Hawks will not be back with the team for preseason. Forward/center Joe Smith signed a one-year deal with the Nets. Also, former fan

favorite Mario West is in Boston, where he will try to make the C’s roster after being invited to join the team for train-ing camp. suPPort For the dreAM … The Hawks stepped up their sup-port for their sister team, the Atlanta Dream, during the recent WNBA Finals. Although Marynell Meadors’ team was swept by the Seattle Storm, plenty of Hawks were at Philips Arena as fans. Players and executives donated over 600 tickets for Game 3. “We are delighted to assist our sis-ter team, the Atlanta Dream, in their pursuit of the WNBA Championship tomorrow night in Game 3 of the series at Philips Arena,” said owner Michael Gearon. “By purchasing several blocks of tickets, we hope that those in atten-dance will have an enjoyable time on behalf of the Hawks, and help cheer on the Dream to victory as they look to ex-tend the championship series.” Unfortunately, the Dream were de-feated 87-84 to end their season. Beachy gives solid effort in philly Thrash play initial preseason gamesThe Braves entered a crucial three-

game series with the Phillies in Phila-delphia down three games but leading the NL wild card by two games and in the midst of their final road trip of the season.

liFe’s beAChY … Braves Class AA pitcher of the year, Brandon Beachy, made his major league debut in game one of the Philadelphia series after expected starter Jair Jurrjens was scratched with a leg injury. After leading all minor league pitchers with a 1.73 ERA, the former Mississippi stand-out squared off against Philly starter Cole Hamels. The Braves staked the rookie a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but left a few ducks on the pond after setting up runners on first and third with no outs. A Hamels’ strikeout of Gonzalez and a double play by Melky Cabrera would end the threat and the Braves couldn’t muster anything else off the dominant lefthander. Beachy gave the run back in the bottom of the sec-ond and then a Heyward error led to a two-run fifth. The Braves’ starter was

Just a few days into training camp, the new-look Thrashers started the pre-

season against Columbus and Carolina. The team will practice throughout the week and not every player will participate in the early preseason games, but new head coach Craig Ramsay will be looking for consistency right from the get-go. “We’re gonna take a look at some of our younger guys and see how they fend for themselves,” said Ramsay. “What we’re re-ally looking for from our team is that we’re changing quickly. If we get into a situation where we’re changing every 30 to 40 sec-onds then that’s good for our team.” Zach Bogosian is entering his third season with Atlanta and will be looked at as playing a more significant role. He is using training camp and the preseason to prepare as much as he can for a grueling 82-game season. “Training camp is sup-posed to be tough,” said Bogosian. “I’m trying to get my timing down and keep things simple. It’s all about timing.” Evander Kane played 66 games as a

What a difference a week makes. It also helped that the Falcons were

not going up against the vaunted Pitts-burgh Steelers defense. Following a 15-9 overtime loss at Pittsburgh in Week 1, Atlanta bounced back last Sunday with a domi-nating 41-7 home win over the Arizona Cardinals. Despite missing both Jerious Norwood (knee) and Michael Turner (groin) for the entire second half, the Falcons amassed 444 yards of offense, 221 of which came on the ground. “I thought today was a good effort by everybody; offensively, defensively and special teams,” quarterback Matt Ryan said in his post-game press confer-ence. “We made some plays when we needed to. It was good to get off to a fast start and we kept that momentum going.” Who is JAsoN sNelliNG? … Snelling’s breakout performance may have come as a surprise to many, but not to his teammates. He has made the most of opportunities—albeit rare—in the past, but never in such a way that stole the show in a significant Falcons victory. In the 2009 season finale, with Atlanta eliminated from playoff conten-

tagged with the loss after going 4.1 innings, with the bullpen allowing an inherited runner to score. Beachy’s fi-nal line read: four hits; three runs, one earned; three walks; one strikeout. The Braves managed just six hits and dropped four games back, then fell five games out with a loss Tuesday. The team maintains a one-game lead over San Diego and a three-game lead over Colorado for the wild card. Matt Diaz was a superhero in game one with several nice catches in the out-field, but his biggest save may have been over a guy who could only be described as an idiot. In the seventh inning, a man wearing a red body suit jumped onto the field and ran around eluding security be-fore Diaz stuck his foot out and tripped the interloper, allowing security to ap-prehend the trespasser. Diaz told report-ers after the game that he was nervous about someone getting injured, as several seasons ago a Braves security officer was injured in a similar situation. rookie last year, with 14 goals and 12 assists. He has worked hard along with his teammates early on in training camp. “I think everybody’s worked hard so far these three days in camp and we’re getting in good shape,” said Kane. “In practice everybody’s playing with ev-erybody, so it’s good to know how your teammates move out there and it’s good to get the system down.” New goaltender Chris Mason brings a lot of experience over from St. Louis. He wants to fit in with the team and gain the respect of his new teammates. “I want to just come in here and be myself, coming into a new locker room you have to gain respect,” said Mason. He could be battling for a starting job or split time with other goalies depending on how he plays early on. “Ideally, I’d like to play a lot of games, but ultimately that’s up to the coach, you have to earn your ice time out there,” Mason concluded. Deighton can be reached at [email protected].

tion, Snelling rushed 25 times for 147 yards. He gained 76 yards on 25 carries in Week 11 against the Giants, but the Falcons lost in overtime. For his efforts, Snelling was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday; especially impressive con-sidering his own quarterback—Ryan—tossed three touchdowns and had a QB rating of 117.3. It is the first such honor for Snelling in his four-year NFL career. Last Sunday also marked the first time he has scored both rushing and receiv-ing touchdowns in the same game.NorWood out For the seAsoN … Snelling will have plenty more op-portunities as the season progresses, but not for a reason that anyone wanted. Norwood suffered a torn ACL on the opening kickoff against Arizona and is out for the year. Next up for the Falcons is a trip to New Orleans to take on the defending Super Bowl champions. Like the Fal-cons, though, they will also be down a running back. Reggie Bush is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a fractured fibula. Dimon can be reached at [email protected].

Little strengthens hold on starting role; curry not content with moral victoryAnother first for Georgia State football

in week four as the Panthers head out on the road to Buies Creek, N.C. to face the Campbell University. (WCFO-AM 1160 & WRAS-FM 88.5) Last weekend the Pan-thers opened some eye around the FCS when they almost beat fourth-ranked Jack-sonville State at the Dome. The final score in overtime was 34-27. With the constant questions regarding the quarterback spot coming out of the Lambuth game, Drew Little quieted some of the naysay-

ers by completing 25 of his 38 passes for 227 yards and a 1-yard touchdown run on a keeper that tied the game at 27. Jacksonville State scored on their first possession in OT quarter-back Marques Ivory’s 2 yard run. Needing a touchdown and extra point to prolong the extra period, Georgia State quarterback Kelton Hill threw incomplete in the back of the end zone on fourth-and-goal from the two-yard line. Tight end Arthur Williams came down with the tipped pass, but after one official signaled touchdown, he was ruled out of bounds.

“We didn’t come here to do well against good teams,” said head coach Bill Curry. “We came here to beat them, and there were so many ways that we could have today, but we weren’t ready to take that step just yet.” Bo Schlechter caught five passes for 64 yards and Danny Williams caught seven pass-es for 78 yards. … Campbell also owns a 1-2 record, following their 28-27 loss to Davidson, which scored the winning touchdown with just 11 seconds left. The Camels, an FCS program that competes in the Pioneer League, are play-

ing their third season of football. “Going on the road for the first time is another step and another test for our young football team,” said Curry. Join us each Monday afternoon (4:00-5:00 p.m.) for the Bill Curry call-in radio show on Newstalk 1160 AM. …Women’s soccer won two on the road last weekend. The Pan-thers won 1-0 over Winthrop and 2-1 on the road at Gardner-Webb. Dave Cohen is in his 28th season as the “Voice of Georgia State Athletics” on WRAS-FM (88.5) and WCFO-AM, Newstalk 1160.

Mark Richt feels his team is improving. Georgia fans, by in large, feel the team

shouldn’t need to improve. After a 1-2 start (0-2 in the SEC for the first time since 1993) , Richt is trying to hold his program together while the fans seem split on how the season will turn out. On one hand, the Dawgs have lost two com-petitive games to two fairly high-ranked teams in No. 13 South Carolina and No. 12 Arkansas and have a manageable schedule over the next five games. On the other hand, Georgia has been in-consistent on offense and defense and has lost to two teams that it is probably more talented than. But Richt feels that his team will overlook the negatives and focus on the task at hand – a road

Not just this season, but all last season Tech fans were wondering when their defense

would stop someone. But with the defense playing the way it had the first two games this season and after last season, it was hard to re-ally believe in it. Despite winning the ACC, Tech sported a defense that allowed over 360 yards per game and 24.8 points per game last year. Out with Dave Wommack, in with Al Groh; with a new defensive coordinator the results this season had been about the same through the first two games and the first quarter against North Carolina. But that is when things finally started to turn around. When asked at his weekly press conference how he would describe the play of

game at Mississippi State. “The state of the program is that we are getting ready for Mississippi State,” said Richt at his weekly teleconference. “It’s early in the year. We are getting ready to play an-other Southeastern Conference game and try to get a victory in league play.” The SEC dean of head coaches at one school thinks his players know how important it is to get that first conference win. “I know the guys are desperate for a vic-tory, so that probably takes care of itself,” said Richt on his team’s motivation. “I don’t think that I have to remind them that we are 0-2 right now. I don’t know if that will make

his defense in the first three games, Johnson re-sponded, “It’s not been real good.” Johnson must not have realized what his defense did in the final three quarters against the Tar Heels. After starting the game play-ing the way it had for more than a season, something finally clicked. The defense only allowed 181 yards and 14 points in the last three quarters of play. Johnson went on in the interview to say of the defense, “They are getting better. It’s like you have to know what you’re doing and where you’re going to play fast. I think they are still feeling their way some but they are getting better.” And that is an improvement. The Jackets will face surging NC State

a difference right now.” With games ahead against struggling Colorado, rebuilding Tennessee, perennially weak Vandy and a modestly talented team in Kentucky, Georgia can turn its season around in a hurry. If the Dawgs can escape Starkville with a win, positive emotions will again sur-round the program and the team could go on a bit of a roll going into the annual clash in Jacksonville with Florida on Oct. 30. And the Gators have looked beatable thus far, strug-gling early on in all three of their games against Miami (OH), USF and Tennessee. Black can be reached at [email protected].

this Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium. The Wolfpack are coming off an impressive 30-19 Thursday night victory over Cincinnati and are 3-0 on the season. Tech has won five of six in the series. Following the visit from State, the Jack-ets will head to Winston-Salem, NC for a tilt with Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons are coming off a 68-24 blowout loss at the hands of Stanford and will face Florida State Sat-urday. Tech defeated the Deacons last year in Atlanta, the team’s first meeting since the ACC Championship game in 2006, which Wake Forest won 9-6. Watson can be reached at 404-256-1572.
