04 I SCORE ATLANTA Get In The Game!

A L W A Y S A T S C O R E A T L . C O M

The biggest media story involving Atlantalast week was WITHOUT QUESTION

the Hawks. They made the biggest splash, butfor all of the wrong reasons.

BROWN SLAMS SMOOVE … As Atlanta faced the Orlando Magic,

ESPN and ABC awarded the series with MikeTirico and Hubie Brown as an announcingcrew. These two certainly are one of the topcrews in NBA basketball and while not the A-team, certainly a B+ to be sure. Both Tirico andespecially Brown were critical of the Hawks’effort in the first two games of the series.

Brown seemed openly frustrated by JoshSmith’s effort in the contests, calling Smith outfor not running back on the defensive fastbreak. Brown has forgotten more about basket-ball than I will ever know, and it is nice when acommentator doesn’t just sugarcoat or glossover the player’s effort because they are friendsor they used to play together. I have heard aboutthe athlete/coach code of not overly knocking aformer teammate or charge, but it is refreshingto hear Brown, Jon Gruden and Bobby Knighttell it like it is up there in the booth. You don’tneed a Simon Cowell impersonator to tearsomeone apart, but it is nice to hear that YESthe player is loafing or the shortstop just plainMISSED that grounder.

The Hawks’ effort apparently was so badin the first two losses to Orlando that, uponarrival at Philips Arena, Tirico and Brownwere nowhere to be seen and instead a crewincluding Doris Burke was calling the game. Not that Burke isn’t qualified to talk NBA,but come on. Couldn’t she do the WNBA andhave one of the seven former players thatESPN uses in studio to do the games? Does

Burke REALLY know what it is like in anNBA locker room? No. Does she really knowwhat it is like to even dunk? No. Call me sex-ist, whatever. Serve as a sideline reporter ifyou want to be involved. Don’t take a spotfrom someone that REALLY KNOWS thegame. (Weird. Normally, I am calling out forthe former jocks NOT to get jobs over thetrained commentator/announcer, but in thiscase, come on. I could at least fake that I’vebeen in the NBA. Doris Burke cannot.)

SAY IT AIN’T SO, JOE … After the Magic annihilated the Hawks

by 30 in Atlanta’s own building, Joe Johnsonput his foot in his mouth in front of reportersand credit the AJC’s Michael Cunningham forfollowing through on the story. Johnson toldreporters after he had had time to cool off thathe “could care less if they showed up or not.”That quote was NOT taken out of context. Infact, here is what Johnson said toCunningham in the writer’s blog following lastSaturday’s game: “That [the booing] doesn’tbother me and I hope it doesn’t bother anyonein this locker room. It’s about us in this lockerroom. We could care less if [fans] showed up.”

Cunningham appeared on 790 The ZoneSunday morning and Sam Radin got him to setthe exact scene of how the comment happened.Cunningham said that Johnson got out of theshower with a towel, walked up to reporters andaddressed the booing with his statement. Thenext day, Johnson didn’t exactly take the com-ment back when given a chance, tellingCunningham, “In the heat of the battle you tendto say a lot of things. But it was tough, man. Iwas a little [ticked] off but I am over now.”

Two parties need to be given gold stars

here. First off, Johnson could have been a lit-tle “ticked” off after all of the hubbub thatthese comments surely brought to the AJC aswell as to 790 The Zone. On my way to host-ing Score Atlanta Sports Sunday, I heardSam taking call after call on the issue and thecalls continued for over an hour into ourshow. The negative pub could have turnedJohnson into Marcel Marceau wheneverCunningham approached him for a com-ment. But Johnson continued to talk to theAJC beat writer, so gold star to Johnson.

Also, Cunningham himself earns a goldstar for realizing he had a story and going withit, but not in a malicious way. He told it in themost truthful and forthright way, and evenappeared on 790 to give the full backgroundas well. Most reporters witnessed what hap-pened when the Florida Gators’ beat writerwent to his Orlando blog with an actual quotetaken in context and Urban Meyer went crazy. That might scare some beat writers fromgoing through with a story that needs to betold for fear of losing their job or beat if theguy that popped off tries to pull an Urban.Gold stars for both of the parties involved.

WEST CHANNELING SKIP … I caught the Braves Wrap Up show on

680 The Fan following the postgame show forthe first time last weekend. The major formatof the show, at least from what I heard, is sim-ply Steve West taking phone calls from every-one that couldn’t get through on the postgameshow with Chuck Dowdle.

I remember listening to the late, greatSkip Carey on some of the Braves pregameshows back in the day and you could tellwhen Skip would get irritated with callers.

And, I must say that West has a bit of Skip inhim. Perhaps it was just the one show I hap-pened to tune into, but West was Mr. Negativetowards several callers. Just to make sure Ididn’t catch him on an off-day, I tuned in thenext day to the wrap up show and sureenough, Steve-hater was back, either givinginane stats that had zero to do with what thecaller had said or simply ignoring callers’questions. I enjoy West’s work during the highschool football season but you cannot justdisregard the callers’ thoughts and questions. That is the point of the show. I assume that ifyou anger enough people and the calls stop, the show likely will stop too. Don’t bite thehands that feed you, even if they ask 13straight questions about Terry Pendleton.

Proctor can be reached [email protected].

Burke should not be assigned NBA games; West too harsh on callersCAN YOU BELIEVE...

...HE SAID THAT?“Josh Smith is kind of like George W.Bush.” Brandon Adams tried to say thatJosh Smith’s attitude may be that of ago-getter, but we just see him appear-ing to loaf and pout and not care.Adams made the point that perhapsBush was intelligent but we just saw theconfused eyebrows furled up everydayin news segments. I don’t think anyoneoutside of Adams’ family enjoys andrespects his radio work as much as Ido, but I didn’t follow the “Josh Smithas W,” logic. In Brandon’s defense, hewas three hours into a solo show.

Bradley earlier this week: “Still, the man I’dhire was interviewed for this job whenWoodson got it in 2004. (Also interviewedback then: Mike Brown, who now coachesLeBron.) The man I’d hire is Dwane Casey, who’s currently being sought by other teams

The Hawks let us all down. Period.

The team that looked like it could be aserious contender in the NBA’s EasternConference down the stretch seemed to for-get everything come playoff time, gettingbeat by a combined 101 points inthe four losses to Orlando andgoing 4-7 in the postseason.

Even owner Michael Gearontold the AJC, “I thought we kind oflooked like a deer in headlights.”

ASSESSING THE DAMAGE …What happened? Not real

sure. But it is apparent that whilethis team won 53 games in theregular season, there is a seriousleadership problem, whether thatis on the bench or on the court.Let it be said that head coachMike Woodson has done a verygood job getting the team to thispoint, taking them from 13 winsin 2005 to a third-place finish inthe conference, three more winsover Boston that, at press time, had No. 1 seed Cleveland downthree games to two in their quar-terfinals series.

But we all must ask ifWoodson has done about as muchas he can do here. Eventually,NBA players stop listening totheir coach and even the best ofthe league’s head coaches.Perhaps it’s time to make a change and bringin a coach with a different style who can takethe organization to the next level.

The good news is there is plenty oftalent. I can’t see Mike Bibby coming backand, despite his play in the postseason, they will find a way to keep free-agent-to-be Joe Johnson. But young point guard JeffTeague is going to be a player and JamalCrawford proved this year he can carry ateam offensively.

As far hiring a new coach, this is whereI agree with the AJC’s Mark Bradley. Wrote

was a good season for the Hawks and onethey certainly can build on. They just have todecide who under Sund does that building onthe court. For Woodson, if he’s not back heshould have no problem getting another job.He has proven he can rebuild teams and there

are plenty that need his talents acrossthe league. But the Hawks are pastthat and we all have to think thatWoodson is the one that has led theteam to water but now someone elsemust get them to drink.

THE RIGHT MOVE … Georgia’s football team got a break

this week when quarterback LoganGray decided not to transfer. WhileGray will probably always be a back-up, his departure would have left theteam in a horrible situation consider-ing No. 1 QB Aaron Murray doesn’thave a down of college experienceand Lassiter signee Hudson Masonis not ready to play in the SEC, or atleast play and give the Bulldogs achance to be really competitive.Gray did the right thing, which isnice to see in college sports thesedays and said in a written statement:“I have decided to stay at theUniversity of Georgia because I trulydo love being a Georgia Bulldog. Iwant to be a part of this team gettingback to the SEC championship gameand winning it.’’ Gray will get somework at wide receiver but is there asan insurance policy to Murray. It’s

easy to pull for a kid that makes that kind ofunselfish decision.

AND FINALLY …Kudos to AJC high school writer

Michael Carvell, who currently is preview-ing 30 high school football teams duringspring practice, putting one out every day onAJC.com. It’s amazing how popular thesport has become year-round and Carvell isone of the best at covering high schools. Hehad an interesting piece this week on the

Berry twins at Creekside, soon-to-be sopho-mores and younger brothers of Eric Berry, the defensive back who just went No. 5 inthe NFL draft to Kansas City. Word is thetwins are better players now than when Ericwas the same age. That’s scary.

— he has interviewed with the Hornets — butmight have a greater interest in these Hawks.

It just so happens, Casey worked undernow Hawks general manager Rick Sund. Thetwo were in Seattle when Casey was an assis-tant to Sonics head coach Nate McMillan. What Casey, according to Bradley, does bestis deal with players and it became obvious inthe playoffs that Woodson had trouble on acommunications level with his team. Theredidn’t appear to be any trust between them.

Meanwhile, it is important to rememberthat despite the debacle against Orlando, this

Where do the Hawks go now; Gray makes best decision for all involved

CATCH I.J. ON SUNDAYS‘Woodson has proven he can rebuild teams and there are plenty that needhis talents across the league. But the Hawks are past that and we all haveto think that Woodson is the one that has led the team to water but nowsomeone else must get them to drink.’

GRAY STAYS: UGA junior quarterback announced on Wednesday that he was goingto remain in Athens instead of transferring. This is great news for the Bulldogs, whoreturn just two scholarship signal-callers besides Gray. Photo courtesy of Rob Saye.

OUT FRONT

Hawks head coach Mike Woodson hasseen his Hawks teams improve their wintotal in each of his five seasons inAtlanta. However, after another second-round playoff sweep, rumors are swirlingthat Woody may be on the choppingblock. Also up in the air is the future offranchise player Joe Johnson, whosecontract ran out at the end of this pastseason. See page 9 for Ricky Dimon'scover story on this situation. THUMBS UP TONOT RETIRING

THUMBS DOWN TO BAD ATTITUDES

Jones not retiring After Chipper Jones mentioned lastfall that there was a retirement possi-bility, Braves fans mourned. For thetime being fans can turn that frownupside down because Jones saidTuesday that for the time being he hasno plans to walk away after 2010.

Dallas Braden Braden first made headlines last month forgetting into a shouting match with A-Rodafter the slugger walked across the pitch-er’s mound. Now, Braden is known for a lotmore. Last Sunday against Tampa Bay, hetossed the A’s first perfect game since 1968and the 19th perfect game in MLB history.

Tech Ladies LeaderThe Lady Yellow Jackets have hired a newcoach for their basketball team. Jim Lewis hasbeen added on as an assistant coach. This isgreat news for the Jackets because Lewishappens to come with over 40 years of coach-ing experience. He has spent the last two sea-sons scouting for the WNBA’s Indiana Fever.

Johnson Talks Not only did Johnson fail to lead dur-ing the playoffs, but he also angeredHawks fans when he responded tothe crowd’s booing by saying, “Theydon’t bother me. It’s about us in thislocker room. We could care less ifthey showed up or not.”

Sleepless in Seattle Ken Griffey Jr. allegedly fell asleep in theMariners’ clubhouse during a game lastSaturday night and now all hell is breakingloose in Seattle. Griffey denies it happenedand is furious with two unnamed teammateswho broke the story. The entire team, mean-while, is refusing to conduct interviews atwhich the Tacoma News Tribune is present.

Smith Walks J-Smoove was not so smooth during the Magicseries. His failure to hustle back on defensesealed the deal for Hawks fans to believe theirteam had given up. After his comments aboutMilwaukee backfired, Smith should have kepthis head down and played harder.

SANITY

“It’s not the end of the world. We were awful in the secondround, that’s a fact. But we

didn’t play the kind of basketball the Atlanta Hawks

are capable of playing.”

- Hawks general manager Rick Sund on the team’s performance in the second round of the NBA playoffs

against the Orlando Magic

CRUNCHING THE

NUMBERS AT LASTLOOKING FOR A SWING COACHLots of people saw Tiger Woods and

Hank Haney splitting up. I heard about itevery time Tiger played in a tourna-ment and didn’t win. I didn’t see itcoming the way it actually wentdown with Haney walking away. What we heard from Haneymight have actually been thetrue story. Or, Tiger could haveactually decided to let him go,but let it be Hank’s idea. Or, evenmore damaging to Tiger given thecurrent climate, Hank could havehad some other reason for wanting to

walk away. Either way, the way it went downwas classy, if not informative. Who is next?

I have heard Butch Harmon, BillyHarmon, Sean Foley, even Mark

O’Meara or John Cook. No oneknows right now. The first step forTiger will be getting his neckhealthy again. Then, it shouldn’tbe too hard to find a new teacher.

Jason Heyward’s RBI per ABratio, best in Major LeagueBaseball among players withat least 16 RBIs.

Improvement from TroyGlaus’ April slugging per-centage (.292) to his Mayslugging percentage (.600).

SCORE LISTANOTHER PLAYOFF THUD:Just when you thought the Hawkswere going to go deeper in the play-offs, Dwight Howard and theOrlando Magic put their plans onhold and swept the Hawks in theEastern Conference Semifinals.Where do the Hawks go from here?

BRAVES ARE FALLING: Thereis no other way to put this, but theBraves are not playing good base-ball. At press time, the Braves werelast in the NL East and have scoredonly 129 runs. This is not whatBobby Cox had in mind for his lastseason as the Braves skipper.

FALCONS GONE CAMPING:Fans and media members got achance to see the 2010 Falcons upclose and personal, as they heldminicamp at their headquarters atFlowery Branch. The story had to beMichael Turner, as he looked fitterthan last season. The Burner is back!

GLAUS HEATING UP: Bravesfirst baseman Troy Glaus is break-ing out of his early-season slump. The 6-5, 240-pound veteran is onan eight-game hitting streak andhas driven in 13 runs in the last 10games. If Chipper and McCann getback into form, this could become adangerous lineup.

GRANT GETS TIME: FormerUGA and New Orleans Saints defen-sive end Charles Grant was sentencedto probation on Tuesday for hisinvolvement in a Georgia nightclubfight, which resulted in a death of apregnant woman. Oh yeah, and RogerGoodell is going to look into this.

SMOLTZ FALLS SHORT: JohnSmoltz had a chance to become partof the PGA Tour, as he took part in aU.S. Open qualifying event inFlorida. However, he fell short of thegoal, shooting a 6-over par 76 whichwas six shots from contention.Better luck next time, Smoltzie.

THE BIG EXPANSION: Therehave been talks that officials fromthe Big Ten Conference are offeringteams from other conferences tojoin them. However, Big Ten com-missioner Jim Delany has come outand said that they have done nosuch thing. Yeah, right.

PERFECT MOTHER’S DAY:Oakland A’s pitcher Dallas Bradenpitched a perfect game on Mothers’Day and dedicated the game to hismother, who passed away from can-cer while he was in high school. These are stories we need to hearmore often in the world of sports.

WALTON ROLLS ON: TheWalton girls tennis team continuesto make history as it won its sev-enth consecutive state title andhave not lost a match in 133attempts. Being a Walton alum, I’mproud of what the Walton girls haveaccomplished and I hope they canmake it eight.

MANCHESTER TO THEDOME: The Manchester CitySoccer Club will play an exhibitiongame at the Georgia Dome on July28, taking on Club America. This ispart of the plan for getting the WorldCup to Atlanta in 2018 or 2022. All Ihave to say to that is, GOAL!!

The Atlanta Dream has started its presea-son work with two losses under its belt.

The Connecticut Sun defeated Atlanta 86-79during the Dream’s first preseason game.Despite the loss, the individual performancesby the Dream were stellar. AngelMcCoughtry stole the show and was the highscorer with 19 points. Rookie BrittaineyRaven debuted in her first pro game with 10points. Armintie Price and Shalee Lehningscored 10 points for the Dream as well.

FIRST TIPOFF …The Dream played the Washington

Mystics on May 9 without many of its play-ers. Erika de Souza, Chamique Holdsclawand Coco Miller were among those not inattendance. Their presence was sorelymissed as the Mystics dominated theDream 77-58. Iziane Castro Marques ledthe Dream in scoring with 13 points. Shewas followed closely by Angel McCoughtrywho put up 11 points. Rookie Raven con-tinued to impress with seven points, third-best on the team.

Despite the losses, Coach Meadors isoptimistic going into the first official game ofthe season against San Antonio. “What needsto happen is we need to get all of our playershere,” Meadors said. “We have been reallyshort in the post area with experienced play-ers and by the beginning of next week we willhave Yelena Leuchanka, which will help.”

Leuchanka is currently playing overseasin the Turkish Championships. Slowly butsurely, the missing players have been filinginto camp. Two guards arrived this pastFriday and everyone is learning to play welltogether again. Kelly Miller and Raven aretwo new guards to the Dream. Everyone onthe team is currently trying to recognize whatthey do, what their strengths and weaknessesare, and getting their timing in sync.

“We have to keep working together to getthat continuity,” Meadors said.

The Dream are back at practice prepar-ing for San Antonio this weekend. “By thetime Saturday rolls around, we’ll be ready toplay,” said Meadors.

NEUTRAL-SITE OPENER …The Dream played the Mystics at the

Hooper Eblin Center in Cooksville, Tenn. Itwas somewhat of a homecoming for CoachMeadors, who grew up in Nashville and also

attended Middle Tennessee State University. She then coached women’s basketball atMTSU before it was a varsity sport and thenwent on to coach 20 seasons at Tennessee Tech.

“It brought back a lot of memories beingthere; it was special for me especially”Meadors said.

The Dream vs. Mystics game marked thefirst professional women’s basketball game tobe played at the Hooper Eblin Center.

“The fans were so appreciative. Theyloved the game and despite us not playingvery well it was all about these people seeingwhat the WNBA is all about,” she said.

Shalee Lehning is entering her secondyear as a pro ball player. The Dream guard wasrecruited last year from Kansas State. Whenasked about what she thought the Dream needsto do to start winning games this season, shehad a very similar response to her coach.

“We still have some players coming backfrom Europe and the first week of trainingcamp there were only a couple of us here thatwere on the team from last year,” Lehningsaid. “The biggest thing is to not focus onwhat we didn’t do in the first two preseasongames but to focus on getting in the gymtogether, playing together and learning eachother’s styles again.”

Lehning is also optimistic when it comesto the Dream’s first regular-season gameagainst San Antonio. “We’ll be more thanfine, once we get our missing teammates thecrew and foundation will be back together.”

The rookies have been adjusting well tolife as a pro basketball player. They havemade that quite clear with their first twoperformances so far. Lehning made thetransition just one short year ago andremembers it well.

“As far as my role with the rookies go,I have just tried to be a leader to them,”Lehning said. “I talk to them throughoutpractice and let them know they put in agreat effort and that they have the energy weneed.” Lehning thinks what makes a teamgreat is not necessarily putting the ball in thebasket but being a teammate people lookforward to playing with.

The Dream’s first regular season gamewill be May 15 at San Antonio and their firsthome game will tipoff at Philips Arena onMay 16 against Indiana.

It wasn’t pretty, but in the end, two factsemerged from the second-round playoff

series. The first is that the Hawks still have along way to go if they want to enter the con-versation as one of the elite teams in theEastern Conference. Secondly, the Magic areplaying the best basketball in the NBA rightnow. Going forward, an offseason awaits thatat the moment provides more questions thananswers about the futures of two importantmembers of the Hawk’s team: floor leader JoeJohnson and head coach Mike Woodson.

SECOND-ROUND DISASTER …Even at Philips Arena, the Hawks could

not stop what seemed inevitable based on whattook place in Orlando. After returning homefor Game 3 there was still a sense of hope, butthat went by the wayside in a hurry. In the end,the Hawks lost by 30 points 105-75, and itwasn’t even the worst loss of the series.

Dwight Howard was unstoppable, scor-

ing 21 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. Likeso many times this season, a whole host ofplayers had stepped up to be the number twoscorer on the team and, on this night, it wasRashard Lewis. Lewis scored a team-high 22points on 8-for-13 shooting while going 4-for-7 from beyond the three-point arc. During theregular season, seven different players made75 or more three-pointers for the Magic.

The Hawks, on the other hand, shot 34.9percent from the floor as a team, slightly bet-ter than the horrible 34.6 percent performancein Game 1. Jamal Crawford led the Hawkswith 22 points, but it was another game thatseemed over as soon as the ball was tipped.

With frustrations at a premium, theHawks faced a must-win in Game 4. Theoutcome was a 98-84 Magic win, solidifyinga sweep. The Hawks started the gameaggressively trying to score more in thepaint with Josh Smith and Al Horford, butthe Magic were up to the challenge once

again. Every time the Hawks scored downlow, the Magic had an answer with a three ora thunderous Howard dunk.

Vince Carter had 22 points and MichaelPietrus, though only recording 12 points, hitbig shots to help build an early first-half lead. The Hawks continued to struggle on defenseas the Magic continued to prove that they arethe most unselfish team in the NBA withtheir ability to make the extra pass, especial-ly on the perimeter. In the end, it was apainful end to a series that everyone inAtlanta just wants to forget.

KEY DECISIONS …As of late, the NBA has gotten a reputa-

tion as a league that is more about what hap-pens in the offseason than that of the actualseason. Perhaps the most anticipated freeagency class in the history of the NBA is onlyadding fuel to the fire.

Enter Joe Johnson, who has already

turned down one mid-year extension offerfrom the Hawks. Johnson was the subject ofrumors all season and he did not make anynew fans in the playoffs, even after his All-NBA selection. He averaged 12.8 ppg andshot the ball just 17-for-57 for the entire seriesagainst the Magic, which calculates to 29 per-cent. His performance left many wondering ifhe is fit to lead the team.

Mike Woodson also may be on the hotseat and is entering the offseason without acontract extension. Woodson has certainlyhad his chance to build a competitive team.

For both Johnson and Woodson, itseemed everything came crashing down inthe Orlando series. Nobody liked going sevengames with Milwaukee, but it was still a win.Even after a 53-win regular season, it would-n’t surprise anyone if one or both are some-where else next year.

Different year. Same story.

For the second consecutive season, theHawks won a Game 7 to reach the secondround of the playoffs, only to get handled infour straight games by a superior opponent.Last year it was the Cleveland Cavs. This yearit was the Orlando Magic. And this year itwas even worse.

In fact, the lopsidedness of the Hawks-Magic series reached historic proportions.Orlando prevailed by a combined 101 points inthe four-game sweep for what amounted to themost one-sided four-game series in the historyof the NBA. The Magic won by scores of 114-71, 112-98, 105-75 and 98-84, and it’s safe tosay the visitors could have extended the mar-gins in Games 3 and 4 had they felt like it.

Despite losing at Orlando by a combined57 points in the first two games, the Hawkshad to be hoping they could turn this seriesinto something like their 2008 first-roundshowdown with Boston in which the hometeam held serve every time. Instead, thePhilips Arena faithful never came close towitnessing any kind of resurgence.

Game 3 saw the Magic seize a 10-pointlead after one quarter and a virtually insur-mountable 19-point advantage at halftime.Orlando out-rebounded the overwhelmedhosts 51-34, shot better than 50 percent fromthe floor, and limited Atlanta to dismal 34.9percent shooting.

Even with the series all but over (noteam has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit),the Hawks said all the right things prior toMonday’s fourth and final contest.

“Forget history,” explained head coachMike Woodson, stressing the importance oftaking it one game at a time. “Go out andforce Game 5. At this point it just comesdown to trying to complete a game; a 48-minute game.”

“It’s either win or go home,” said JoeJohnson. “I know we’ll come out and giveeverything we got. Nobody wants to see the sea-son end, especially not like this in our house.”

Saying proved to be much easier thandoing, however, and the season did, in fact, come to an end inside the Highlight Factory. There were no highlights for Atlanta onMonday night, as Orlando once again ended

all suspense by seizing a huge early advan-tage. The Hawks did not lead for a single sec-ond in Game 4 and the Magic jumped aheadby 11 at the end of the first quarter beforecoasting the rest of the way.

WHAT NOW? …For Orlando, it’s time for a return trip to

the Eastern Conference Finals and—by thelooks of it—quite possibly a repeat appearancein the NBA Finals. For Atlanta, it’s time to takea serious look at the direction of this franchise.

First and foremost, the contracts of bothWoodson and Johnson are expiring this offsea-son. In five seasons with the Hawks, Woodsonhas compiled a regular-season record of 206-286 and a postseason tally of 11-18. It is worthnothing that the Hawks have improved in eachof their past five campaigns, setting win marksof 26, 30, 37, 47 and 53 following a disastrous13-win season in Woodson’s first effort as anNBA head coach (2004-05).

Now, the question is if Woodson will beback for a sixth go-around in Atlanta. Generalmanager Rick Sund has never been one to jumpthe gun on crucial decisions and he is expectedto take at least a few days to ponder this oneafter Woodson’s contract ends on Monday.

“He’s not reactionary, and that’s why he’shad success,” co-owner Michael Gearon, Jr.told the Atlanta Journal Constitution, speak-ing of Sund. Gearon went on to call his team“a deer in headlights” against the Magic, buthe also hinted at minor tinkering of the rosterrather than a complete demolition.

“It’s not the end of the world,” saidGearon. “We were awful in the second round, that’s a fact. But we didn’t play the kind ofbasketball the Atlanta Hawks are capable ofplaying. We have a core, and now what do wedo to take that core and get it better?”

Of course, whether the core stays intactis not necessarily up to Sund, Gearon andthe rest of the front office. Johnson endureda dismal postseason both on and off thecourt and was the recipient of vociferousbooing when he exited both of Atlanta’shome games against the Magic. His well-documented remarks toward the fans hadplenty to do with it, but so did his 17-for-57shooting, 3-for-17 shooting from beyondthe arc, and 12.8 points per game perform-

ance in the four losses to Orlando.Even if the Hawks offer Johnson max

money to stick around (and that seemsunlikely after the way this season ended), theformer University of Arkansas and PhoenixSuns standout could bolt for another location.Major players for Johnson’s service couldinclude the Knicks (former Sunscoach and current Knicks coachMike D’Antoni loved Joe inPhoenix), the Bulls and who knowshow many other teams.

Johnson said that what tran-spired throughout the Magic serieswould “definitely” have an impacton his decision, but—like Gearon—he is not about to jump headlong toany ill-advised conclusions.

“I’ll take some time off, clearmy head, spend some time with myfamily, and then when it gets closeI’m sure me and my agent will sitdown here in the next coupleweeks or so and probably just talkand just kind of see what's outthere,” ESPN.com reported himas saying after Game 4.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT … If Johnson and the rest of

the puzzle pieces remain inplace (or if Johnson goes and isreplaced by—say—Chris Bosh),then perhaps the Hawks canlearn from this humbling expe-rience and turn it into yet anoth-er season of improvement in2010-11. They learned from the2008 Celtics series and got bet-ter, and they built on last year’ssecond-round appearance with59 regular-season wins. Whatwill they do now?

“I think you might gainsome things from a loss, there’s no question,” saidMagic coach Stan Van Gundy, whose team has not taken onein that column since April 2.“Every team in the league, theylose and they get a little bitmore of a commitment to be

better the next time. The real key for teams isyou have to be able to learn without losing. You have to be able to do it after wins ifyou’re going to be a really good team.”

The Magic are a championship-caliberteam. The Hawks hope they’re on their way.

Fans enjoy free glance at team during minicamp; Ward, Walker make rosterMost of the Atlanta Falcons have

already been together as a teamfor over a month now, but they took thefield together officially for the first timethis offseason last weekend, hitting theFlowery Branch practice fields for athree-day mini camp.

“There is a lot of optimism and Ithink everyone is excited,” said quarter-back Matt Ryan.

Ryan’s excitement was shared by therest of the roster as well as the fans thatshowed up for Saturday’s two practices, which were open to the public. Atlantafinished 9-7 and on the outside looking inregarding the postseason, but did wintheir final three matchups to notch theteam’s first back-to-back winning seasonsin franchise history. But with a young ros-ter figuring to improve and a few impor-tant additions made via the draft and freeagency, expectations are much higher.

“It was great for the organization toknock off the back-to-back winning sea-sons, but we want more,” Ryan said.“We want to be in the playoffs and havean opportunity to play late in the season. We are working hard to get there.”

SHORING UP THE DEFENSE …One of the main issues for the season

is Atlanta’s defense, a struggling unitwhose improvement is imperative if theBirds are to return to the playoffs. On dis-play, were the two key additions on thatside of the ball. Cornerback DuntaRobinson was signed from Houston andfirst-round pick Sean Weatherspoonshould compete for playing time at line-backer. Weatherspoon came out of hisfirst practices with the defense impressed.

“[Brian] VanGorder put up the [2009]rankings, we see where we finished lastyear,” said the outside linebacker, “Our

goal is to become one of those defensesthat you don’t want to play.”

Meanwhile, Robinson is trying tohelp revamp a secondary that was one ofthe league’s worst last year.

“We just have to have that beliefin ourselves,” he said, “That’s thetone you try to set [in minicamp],that we are the best.”

Also in the spotlight was 2008 ProBowler Michael Turner, who sufferedthrough injuries and inconsistencyduring last year’s campaign. Turnerlooked more fit and nimble then he didthis time last summer, although mini-camps aren’t exactly the place to deter-mine the effectiveness of players.

“I feel great being back because Ididn’t finish the season last year,” hesaid. “It seems like everybody’s moreexcited this year. We have a chance todo something special.”

NEW ADDITIONS …The team always signs a few “proj-

ect” players for minicamp to search fora few diamonds in the rough. This year,a pair of players made the roster after animpressive weekend at Flowery Branch.

Quarterback Eric Ward will attempt togive John Parker Wilson a run for the thirdstring quarterback job. A native of Atlanta,Ward threw for 2,396 yards and 16 touch-downs at Richmond, and also was a threat inthe running game with 1,406 yards and 22touchdowns. The 6-2, 310-pounder rewrotethe Spider record books, setting single-sea-son records in passing yards, completionpercentage, touchdowns and more.

Defensive back Daylan Walkeralso had a good showing and made theteam. The former Arkansas StateIndian racked up 153 career tackles, with 51 tackles and an interceptioncoming in his senior season.

The Atlanta Hawks season came to anunceremonious end at the hands of

the Orlando Magic after four games. The Magic dominated every part of theseries from start to finish, leaving nodoubt that they are one of the best teamsin the NBA. If you’re an Atlanta Hawksfan, there’s nothing positive you cantake from this series. The team managedto play about two and a half out of a pos-sible sixteen quarters of good basket-ball. That’s awful, and there’s no way tomake it seem better. They lost fourgames by a combined 101 points!

The Magic are better than theBobcats and Hawks, just like theLakers are better than the Thunder andJazz, and the Suns are better than theBlazers and Spurs. There’s no shame inlosing to a better team. However, unlike the Thunder, Bobcats, Spurs,Blazers and Jazz, the Hawks didn’t putup much of a fight. Those teamsplayed hard until the bitter end. Theyhad players with broken noses, surgi-cally-repaired knees and starters whomissed the entire series, yet they didn’t

let it define them. They didn’t ask any-one to throw them a pity party. Theywent out there and played hard, whichis all anyone expected.

The Hawks have been one of, ifnot the healthiest team all season long, yet they played like all the odds werestacked against them this entire postseason. Fans of the Thunder, Bobcats,Spurs, Blazers and Jazz are disappoint-ed that their team lost, but not disap-pointed in their team. Hawks fansshould be disappointed in their teamand how they lost. No one would havebeen upset about them losing a seriesto the Magic who are clearly the betterteam. But, when you don’t bother toshow up and play hard for four straightgames, it’s unforgivable. There’s noreason to blow this team up, but as it’scurrently constructed, their ceiling isthe second round.

It’s time to go back to the drawingboard and make the necessary changesto try to get this team over the hump.

Baseball takes series from UNC-W; softball finishes second, heads to CAA tourneyIt was another successful weekend for the

Panther baseball team as they moved intosecond place in the CAA after going on theroad and taking two of three from UNCWilmington. The Panthers swept a doublehead-er Saturday, taking the first game 11-4 and thenheld off the Seahawks 1-0 in the night cap.

In game one, it was another fine pitchingperformance from Aidan Francis (5-3) whowent eight innings while allowing five hits andthree runs with five strikeouts. Offensively,Mark Micowski finished game one 4-for-6

with two runs scored and three RBIs. In thesecond game, a Brandon Williams RBI singlescored Bradley Logan with the game's onlyrun. Pitcher Charley Olson allowed just fourhits. Georgia State lost the Sunday game 8-3.

Now 29-18-1 overall and 12-5-1 in theCAA, the Panthers are just a game and a halfbehind James Madison for the top spot. They’ve gone 15-3-1 in their last 19 games.Following a mid-week loss at Georgia, thePanthers will host Northeastern in a weekendseries at Panthersville.

TO THE BIG APPLE …On the softball diamond, following a

sweep of Towson, the Panthers locked up sec-ond place and now head to New York for theMay 12-14 CAA Championships hosted byHofstra University. Georgia State (35-17) willmeet third-seeded James Madison, the defend-ing champ, in their opener. From what I’ve seen, pitching is the number one ingredient in softballand head coach Bob Heck has two hurlers thatare difference makers; Freshman McCallLangford is 14-3 with a 1.34 ERA while soph-

omore Alana Thomas is 11-5 with a 2.04 ERA.The women’s golf team was competing at

the NCAA Regionals in Greenville, NC, lastweekend. Iliska Verwey and Charlotte Lorentzenposted the new lowest Regional three-day scoresin school history at 216 (even par) and 217 (+1)to tie for ninth and 13th respectively.

Dave Cohen is in his 27th season as the“Voice of Georgia State Basketball andBaseball on WRAS-FM (88.5) and works onthe football radio crew at Furman Universityin Greenville, S.C.

The road has not been good to the AtlantaBraves this season and this recent road

trip was no different. Atlanta traveled to the nation’s capital

for a series against the Nationals, and theBraves likely pictured things turning out alittle better. After dropping the first game,Atlanta ended its long road losing skid witha 7-6 extra inning victory in game two. After giving up an early lead, Matt Diazbroke the 4-4 tie in the sixth by scoring onNate McLouth’s RBI double. Omar Infantescored a run in that sixth and also added atwo-run homer. After the Braves bullpenblew the lead in the eighth, Troy Glausstarted the 10th inning rally with a single.Brandon Hicks then made his major leaguedebut as a pinch runner and Melky Cabreramoved him over with a bunt. Diaz floatedthe go-ahead single to right, scoring Hicksand ultimately giving the Braves the winafter closer Billy Wagner shut down the

Nats in the bottom of the frame. In the series rubber match, the Braves

were nearly no-hit for the second time thisseason as Nationals starter Scott Olsenbreezed through the first 7.1 innings. In theeighth, however, pinch-hitter Jason Heywardknotted the game at two with a two-run singlethat may have gone for a double if the groinhe injured the day before had not affected hisrunning. In the bottom of the ninth, EricO’Flaherty surrendered the walk-off hit toformer Brave Willie Harris to giveWashington the 3-2 win.

NOT SO BROTHERLY … In game one of the Phillies series, per-

haps the Braves forgot their bats inWashington as Jamie Moyer dominated theBraves as Philadelphia cruised to a 7-0 win.

The Braves were held hitless until thefifth and scoreless until the sixth in the sec-ond game of the series. In the sixth, though,

Eric Hinske doubled home a run and wouldlater score himself as the Braves posted athree-spot. The Braves bullpen then came tothe rescue of Kris Medlin, going 4.2 inningswith nary a run allowed. Glaus added aninsurance run in the ninth inning, drivinghome McLouth for a three-run lead.O’Flaherty picked up the win and Wagnerposted yet another save in the 4-1 win.

In the series finale, Kenshin Kawakamiallowed five runs in 6.2 innings of work, including three home runs and Atlanta coulddraw no closer than 4-3 through six innings.Brad Lidge closed down the Braves in the ninthfor his first save of the season. Glaus had twoRBIs and Infante was 3-5 with a run scored.

The Braves did manage to put thingstogether in game one of the Brewers series, crushing Milwaukee 8-2 behind eightscoreless innings from Tommy Hanson.Martin Prado had a grand slam and Glausadded a solo shot.

ON THE INJURY FRONT … In what is becoming a bit of a broken

record for the Atlanta Braves beat, injuriescontinue to pile up. Chipper Jones missedthe series finale against the Phillies aftertweaking his groin last Saturday while beat-ing out an infield single in the Braves vic-tory. He missed the one game, returningagainst the Brewers. Heyward meanwhile, the reigning NL Rookie of the Month forApril, came up lame with a groin injury inthe Nationals series. Heyward has appearedas a pinch-hitter several times but has notstarted in right field as of press deadline.Heyward appeared just once in a gameagainst Philadelphia.

Finally, Jair Jurrjens’ stint on the DLallowed the Braves to recall reliever CraigKimbrel from Gwinnett.

Atlanta sports fans, as well as the entireNBA, learned quite a bit about the Hawks

during this postseason. Not only did someAtlanta players embarrass themselves on thecourt, but they also embarrassed themselvesthrough the media.

The Hawks are known throughout theleague as being very athletic and very talent-ed, but also very young. Head coach MikeWoodson’s group appears to many to possesstremendous potential, but has not yet put itall together. When faced with an equally tal-ented Orlando Magic squad, the Hawks wilt-ed on the vine and failed to challenge in evena single game.

This team is virtually the same as it wastwo years ago when it took eventual WorldChampion Boston to Game 7. But the spirit andenergy that was with that team in Games 3, 4and 6 has seemingly gotten lost in the shuffle.

In the first round of the 2010 playoffs, the mediocre and ailing Milwaukee Buckspushed Atlanta to the brink of elimination. Adesperate rally allowed the more-talentedHawks to win Games 6 and 7 of the series. While it was the Hawks that pestered the eliteCeltics three seasons ago, it was a scrappyand resilient Bucks team that nearly got thebetter of Woodson’s crew.

That scrappy underdog attitude was com-pletely missing during the series with Orlando.

MOVING FORWARD …General manager Rick Sund has the

unenviable task of figuring out what to dowith this bunch after the recent playoff col-

lapse. In Woodson’s six years in Atlanta, histeams have gradually improved each year.Woodson’s first team won just 13 games, butthe Hawks have since increased their wintotal to the 53 wins this past year.

A lot of the talk around town has beenthat Woodson is to blame for the team’s prob-lems. However, after listening to and watch-ing Josh Smith and Joe Johnson during theplayoffs, many fans are also upset with thetwo highly-paid stars.

Woodson has now taken the team tothree consecutive playoff berths and hasseemingly been able to reign in certain play-ers who may not be the most coachable guysin the league. His success in moving Atlantaup the ladder in the Eastern Conference can-not be overlooked.

Also, veteran point guard Mike Bibbyhas shown signs of age recently and alsoreceived a bevy of criticism for his suspectdefense during the Magic series.

“He’s getting older now,” Woodson toldthe AJC after Game 4. “He might have takenus as far as he can take us. Teague, we prob-ably have to give him first crack to see if hecan do the job (next year).”

Young stars like Al Horford and JamalCrawford have been nothing short of sensa-tional since arriving in Atlanta. It may be timefor them to become the core of the franchise.

BRAVES SHOWING PROMISE …After a dismal nine-game losing

streak, the Braves looked like they mightbe mathematically eliminated from the

postseason by August. However, the teamhas begun hitting in Milwaukee and cer-tain players in the lineup are starting toproduce consistently.

In fact, since the losing streak, Atlantahas won seven out of 11 games. Venerablemanager Bobby Cox has to be relived at thesight of his team scoring more runs of late.

Martin Prado and Jason Heyward havebeen the lynchpins of the lineup thus far inthe season, but were joined recently by hot-hitting Troy Glaus. Despite widespread criti-cism and a devastating hitting slump earlyon, Glaus has rebounded at the plate and isnow hitting a respectable .268 as ofWednesday. The mammoth first baseman iscurrently on an eight-game hitting streak.

The Braves’ pitching, meanwhile, hasbeen solid for much of the year. TommyHanson and Tim Hudson have given Atlantaquality starts nearly every time out whileDerek Lowe and Jair Jurrjens who, despitestruggling at times thus far, have trackrecords of success and reliability.

The bullpen has been surprisingly serv-iceable. Billy Wagner, despite his advancingage, has pitched consistently well and sportsa miserly 1.64 ERA.

Cox’s final squad may not beat outPhiladelphia for the East Division title, but itcan certainly make some noise in the wildcard race. And, with the old skipper hangingup the spikes at the end of the season, it is waytoo early to give up on the Braves.

The misery continued for the Georgia base-ball team last weekend as Tennessee came

to town and swept the Bulldogs on their homefield. However, Dave Perno’s team was ableto end a four-game losing skid on Tuesdaynight with a 13-9 win over Georgia State.

SEC DROUGHT …The series sweep by the Vols extended

Georgia’s SEC losing streak to 10 games. TheDawgs have not won an SEC contest since a6-3 win over Ole Miss on April 11.

On Friday, Georgia received a solid pitch-ing performance from Justin Grimm, whostruck out 11 in the 4-1 loss. However, theBulldog offense was stymied by Vol pitcherStephen McCray, who threw a complete game. The Dawgs had just six hits on the night.

“Grimm was excellent and I’m reallyhappy for him,” said Perno. “He threw verywell tonight. We had our guys up and we justcouldn't take advantage of that. We need tocontinue getting ourselves in position to winand eventually, you have to be able to comeup with the big hit in those situations.”

On Saturday, Georgia was shellacked 25-5 by Tennessee. The Vols scored a whopping13 times in the third inning and ended up witha total of 28 hits on the day.

“We’re treading in a tough spot right nowbecause we have to start making moves fornext year without taking opportunities awayfrom our seniors,” lamented Perno. “It’s real-ly getting frustrating and everything’s gettingexposed for us right now.”

Sunday was a bit better for the Dawgs, but still counted for a loss, as Tennessee out-scored the Dawgs 14-11.

Against Georgia State, the Bulldogsthrew seven pitchers and gave up nine runs on15 hits, but still came out on top by a score of

13-9. Levi Hyams hit a home run for Georgiaand drove in three runs in the win.

Georgia will take on Florida this week-end in Gainesville.

SOFTBALL LASSOS HORNS …The No. 10 Georgia softball team

defeated Big XII champion Texas 11-5 in theregular season finale on Monday in Austin,Texas. The Bulldogs also hit three home runsin the win to set a single-season schoolrecord of 86 dingers.

The three home runs came during a six-run third inning, the second time this seasonthat UGA has hit three home runs in aninning. The six-run outburst gave theBulldogs an 11-1 lead after three against theNo. 12 Longhorns.
