President’s Letter

OnceagainmycontributionhereasPresidentisCOVID-related,

likesomuchinourlivesatthemoment.OurexistenceisinasortofstasisandasinthewidercommunityEMHShashadtohaverollingcancellationsofcomingeventsthatwehadplannedthroughtheyear.Inthecurrentenvironmentitisthedismantlingofpendingeventsthathasbecomethehallmarkofouractivities.

We are currently in the process of makingalternativearrangementsfortheholdingofourAnnualGeneralMeetingbyremoteplatform,andthosedetailswillbeforwardedtomembersinduecourse.Itisachallengeforusallinthisnewterritoryoflockdown,butmany of you will be aware of similar arrangementsbeingputinplaceforotherorganisationsofwhichyoumaybemembers.Itlookslikeweareinsomewaystranscendingtheagedemographicdelineationsoftentalkedaboutasweallbecome part of Gen Zoom.

Itisatimethatisputtingallorganisationsinthecommunityunderstress,apartfromthepersonalstressthatitisalsoputtingonallofusindividually.Itisattimeslikethisthatwerealisehowimportantsocialinteractionandcommunityinvolvementaretousinourdailylives.Atthesametimekeepingtheorganisationstickingoverisachallengetoallinvolved,andtheunderstandingof members in relation to this is appreciated.

InthisenvironmentyourCommitteeistryingtofindwaystoencourageinvolvementofmembers.TheYarra

ParkSchoolprojectismovingalong,althoughthecurrentlockdownhasputthePublicRecordOfficeoutofboundsagainforexaminingdocumentsattheReadingRoominNorthMelbourne.AtleasttherearestillresourcesavailabletobesiftedthroughontheonlineTrovesite.Itisanexcitingproject,andtheteamisunearthingsomeintriguingmaterialaboutouroldlocalschool.

AsIlookoutthewindowatthelargemagnoliatreeladenwithbudsabouttobloom,Irecalltheeditionofthisnewsletterfrom12monthsagoanditscapturingofthefirstfloweringmagnoliatreeinEastMelbourne.Ourliveshavecertainlychangedhugelysincetheninanunexpectedway.

Finally,oneobservationthatIhavemaderecentlyrelatestothewearingoffacemasks.Icannowseewhyfootpadsandbanditsintheoldwesternsworebandanasovertheirnosesandmouths,astheywouldhavemadethemselvesdifficulttorecognise.IfIhappentobewalkingdownthestreetandencounteranotherwalkerwearingafacemaskitisoftenquitedifficulttoworkoutwhetherornotitissomeonethatIknow.Ihavealso come to appreciate how much thereadingofthefacialexpressionsofothersreliesonseeingtheexpressionintheirmouths.InthatcontextletmetakethisopportunitytoapologisetoanyoneImayhaveseenonthestreetsrecentlyandunwittinglynotrecognisedbehindtheirfacemask!

Reg Kavanagh - Dare Devil

EastMelbournehashadmanyfamouscitizens,

artists,politicians,publicservants,lawyers,doctorsandfoundersofsignificantbusinesses.Forsome,however,thefametheyachievedintheirearlyyearshadfadedand,bythetimeoftheirdeath,theywerebarelyremembered. ThiswasthestoryofRegKavanagh,oncealegendarystuntperformerwidelyadmiredforhisdaringfeats,famousforcrashingcarsthroughflaminghoopsanddoingwingwalksonaeroplanesinflight.In1974,theyearhedied,hewaslivinginasingleroominaboardinghouseinHoddleStreet,withfivecasesandoneseachestfilledwithclippingsandscrapbooksrecordingwhathadoncebeenafabulous life.

RegKavanaghwasprobablyborninDublin,butthefamilymovedtotheUSA.Regranawayfromhomeattheageoftwelve.Hewenttoseaforsomeyears,beforereturningtoEnglandinthe1920s,earningmoneyasaboxerinatravellingcircus.Whentheownerwentbroke,hemovedtomotorracing,firstasamechanicandthenasadriver.Fromtherehetriedspeedwayracing,competingonaDouglasmotorcycle.HerehemetCol.Stewart,themotorcyclinglegendfromBirregurra,Victoria,andfathertoEMHSmember,GaySussex.

Gay’sfather,ColStewart,whowasadirttrackracingchampionduringtheThirties,wasagoodfriendofRegKavanagh’s. Gay’ssisterBarbaraBatistichhaswrittenabookabouttheirfatherCol Stewart Australia’s Speedway King which includessomeofKavanagh’slife. 

Fromspeedwayracing,Regmovedoninthe1930’s,settingupasuccessfulstuntcompany,theso-called‘DeathSquad’,later‘Reg.Kavanagh’sFilmCrashSquadron’.Inadditiontomotorcycleandcarstunts,inthelater1920s,hehadbecomefascinatedwithairtravelandwithstuntsinvolvingaeroplanes.In1956,hetoldanewspaper reporter that ‘A few years agohecrawledacross13planesin‘mid-air,wingtip’towingtip-withoutasafety line.’(Argus 20/9/1956p.28)

TheBrisbane Telegraph of 21st September1931recorded‘…theplane,carandmotorcyclecrasherRegKavanaghhasaregularchargelistforvarioustypesofhairraisingstunts.For£25hewillstagea60m.p.h.headoncarcrash.Otherchargesare:aerialbattle£1,500;mid-aircrash£125;crashingplaneonlandorwater£50,parachutedrop£25.’

AccordingtoReg,‘themajorruleoftheCrashSquadprohibitedmembersfromgettingengagedormarried.MrKavanaghbrokeitandforfeitedhismembership when he met Miss Joy McKinnon,oftheSwitzerlandIceFollies,inNewZealandthisyear…

themarriagewastohavetakenplacethisyear,buttheeventhasnowbeenpostponedbecauseofhisdecisiontojointheR.A.F.’(Sunday Times29/9/1940,p.3).True?Orjustabitofgoodadvertising?Bynow,theSecondWorldWarhadbegunandRegreturnedtoEngland,withthestatedintentiontojointheRAF.

Bythe1950s,hisactivitieshadwaned,probablyduetotherangeofinjurieshehadsustainedduringhiscareer.Hereceivedsomeincomefromdoingadvertisements,oneforHoldenTyres,anotherfortheFordFalcon.Bythe1960sotherdaredevilslike‘Evil’Knievilhadtakenhisplace.Hediedin1974,aged69.

Yarra Park School (1874–1987)

DespitethedifficultiesofworkinginthecurrentCOVID

environment,agoodstarthasbeenmadebyagroupofEMHSmembersinresearchingthehistoryoftheformerYarraParkStateSchool#1406.ThegroupcomprisesIanHind,MarieFelsandIanandPatriziaKelly.WearealsoreceivingsomeassistancefromIngridStephenwhowasastudentatYarraParkinthelate1940s.Withverylimitedaccesstolocallibraries,theStateLibraryofVictoriaandthePublicRecordsOfficeofVictoria(PROV),theteamhasbeenabletogatherconsiderablematerialrelatingtotheschool’s history from on line resources suchasTROVE. 

YarraParkSchool,onthecornerofPuntRoadandWellingtonParade,

was built on a parcel of two acres of landoftheoldPoliceBarracksreservethatwastransferredtotheEducationMinistryin1873. TheschoolwasdesignedintheTudorstylebytheprominent colonial architect Charles WebbwhoseotherdesignsincludedtheRoyalArcade,theWindsorHotel,theSouthMelbourneTownHall,theAlfredHospitalandinEastMelbourne,theTasmaTerraceandMosspennochinClarendonStreet.TheonlyotherStateSchooldesignedbyWebbwasinDorcasStreet,SouthMelbourne. 

Theschool,openedinJuly1874,wasoneofthefirstlargeurbanstateschoolsconstructedafterthepassingoftheEducationAct1872whichestablishedfree,compulsoryandseculareducationinVictoria.Under

theinitialheadmaster,JosephFrederickWalker,theschoolveryquicklygainedanexcellentreputationforitseducationalresults,firmdisciplineandsportingachievements.AlthoughlocatedintheCityofMelbourne,YarraParkschoolwasbuiltprimarilyinresponsetothegrowingschoolagedpopulationintheCityofRichmond. Upuntilitscentenaryin1974YarraParkwasnearlyalwaysthelargestoftheRichmondschools.Itsenrolmentintheinitialyearswasinexcessof1700studentsandaveragedailyattendancewas900to1000students. 

AstherewasvirtuallynostateprovidedsecondaryeducationinVictoriauntiltheearly1900s,theGovernmentofVictoriaofferedasmallnumberofcompetitivescholarshipsor‘exhibitions’tostudentsinthestateschoolswhowereunabletoaffordthefeesoftheprivateandchurchoperatedgrammarschoolsandcolleges.StudentsfromallovertheStateofVictoriasatacompetitiveexaminationfortheseexhibitionsandwehavefoundfromourresearchthatinalmosteveryyearfrom1874totheearly1890swhenthescholarshipswereabolished,thatoneormorestudentsfromYarraParkwasawardedascholarship.YarraParkStateschoolhasproducedanimpressivelistofalumniinawiderangeoffieldsincludingpublicadministration,thearmedservices,medicine,theclergy,theartsandthesportingarena. Perhapsthebest-knownalumnuswasSirJohnMonashwhowasastudentin1877beforeheattendedScotchCollege.Another famous alumnus is the sculptor SirBertramMackennalwhohasaworkinNationalGalleryofVictoriaand

alsotheTateGalleryinLondon. Incricketweknowofatleastsixex-studentswhoplayedTestCricketforAustraliaincludingSamLoxtonwhowasamemberofDonBradman’s1948‘Invincibles’.ManyAustralianRulesfootballersalsoattendedYarraPark. 

Duringthe1970sand1980sthedemographicchangesinMelbourne’sinnersuburbsbroughtasharpdownturnintheenrolmentsofRichmond’sschoolsleadingtoanumberofschoolclosuresinthelate1980sandearly1990s.YarraParkenrolleditslaststudentsin1987andclosedattheendofthatyear.BythistimethesitehadbecomeverycrampedasaresultofthewideningofPuntRoadintheearly1980s.InJuly1986theschoolwasclassifiedbytheNationalTrustofVictoria.Theschoolbuildingwasconvertedintoresidentialapartmentsintheearly1990s.

James Gall (1828–1895) Architect

James Gall has come to our attention asthearchitectofEblana,140

JolimontRoad,thehomeofThomasJacksonofYoungandJackson’sHotel.Thehousewasbuiltin1883andwasthelatestoftheseveralhousesGalldesignedinEastMelbourneandJolimont.Fivearestillstanding,includingEblana.FormoreaboutThomasJacksonandhishouseseeourwebsite:https://emhs.org.au/history/people/jackson_thomas_joshua_1834-1901

Galldesignednumerousbuildings,mostofthemlarge,manywithatower,andsomeofthemlistedintheVictorianHeritageRegister,butnothinghasbeenwrittenabouthimorhiswork.

HewasborninOldDeer,Aberdeenshire,Scotlandin1828.Hisfather,Andrew,wasa‘housecarpenter’andJamesfollowedhiminthattrade.HearrivedinVictoriainNovember1851aboardtheTasmania,thefirstemigrantshiptosaildirecttoPortland.Hewasoneof196assistedpassengers,‘chieflytradesmenandagriculturallaborerswiththeirfamilies;theremainingportionbeingcomposedofsinglemalesandfemales’.

By1854hewasworkinginthefirmofThomson&Robertson,‘accountants,averageadjusters,estate,house,andgeneralagents,Collins-lane,11Collins-streetwest,Melbourne’.Heusedthisaddressforhisfirstadvertisementsasabuilderunderhisownname.ThefollowingyearhegavetheDukeofWellingtonHotel,Flinders-streetashis

address.In1856hemarriedAnnFultonand

theymovedtonewpremisesatOliver’sCottages,116FlindersLaneeast.OneofGall’searliestbuildingswasatworoomedbrickcottageinSimpsonStreet,EastMelbourneforGeorgeMurdison,apainterandglazier.GeorgehadmarriedJaneFultoninScotlandandtheMurdisonsandJane’sfamily,includinghersisterAnn,alltravelledouttogetheronthesameshipin1854.Thecottage,builtin1859,haslonggone.

ThenexthouseGallbuiltinEast Melbourne was a timber one in WellingtonParade,oneinfromthePowlettStreetonthewesternside.Thishousewasforhimself.Hemovedinin1864andwasthereforabouttenyears.Hefoundplentyofworklocallywithtendernoticesappearingregularlyinthe Argus.Manyofthesehouseshavenotbeenidentifiedandhavenodoubtbeendemolished.Butoneofhisearlierworksis32JolimontTerracebuiltin1868.ItisnowlistedontheHeritageVictoriaRegisteras‘distinctiveasarareandearlysinglefrontedtownhouseofpolychromaticbrick’.

In1877hedesignedInvereskonthecornerofJolimontTerraceandWellingtonParadeSouth.ThisseemstohavebeenatemplateforsomeofhislaterandmuchgrandercountrymansionssuchasNoorilim(1879)andMintaro(1881),bothontheVictorianHeritageRegister.TheStatementofSignificanceforNoorilimsaysofit:‘Thetwo-storeybrickstructurehas

renderedfacadesandiscomposedofanasymmetricaltoweredentrancefacadeandagardenfrontcomprisingatwo-tieredarcadewithcentrallylocatedpediment.’ExactlythesamecouldbesaidofInveresk.

ThetwohousestogethernamedConingsbyat40-42JolimontTerraceandbuiltin1882makeupthetotalofGall’sfivehousestillstandinginJolimont.

In1870GallwasoneoftheresidentswhofoughtthegovernmentoveritsproposaltoresumethelandinthemiddleofWellingtonParadeforhousing.EventhenEastMelbournewasatriskofinappropriatedevelopment.Thelandisnowlargelytakenupbytherailway line.

TwoyearslaterGall’sparentsandsisterarrivedinMelbourneandcametostaywithhim.Soonafterheadvertised,‘WANDEREDfromresidenceofMr.JamesGall,architect,comerWellington-paradeandPowlettstreet,Mrs.GALL.Ageabout68years.’PossiblyMrsGallwassufferingfromdementiaand,alongwiththeincreasedpressureonaccommodation,thisgavehimreasontomovetolargerpremisesinBurkeRoad,Hawthornwherehelivedfortherestofhis life.

HesoonmadehismarkintheareabuyinglandonthecornerofCamberwellandBurwoodRoads,whereheengagedJamesHurleytobuildtheoldTowerHotel.JamesHurley’ssister,Annie,became the licensee.

AlongsidehisarchitecturalworkGallregularlyadvertisedhousesandlandforsaleorrent.It is not clear whether he was actingasagentorspeculatingonhisownbehalf,maybeabitofboth.Hewasobviouslyquiteentrepreneurialandfinanciallyverysuccessfulandhegenerouslycontributedtovarious,localfund-raisingdrives.Amanofvariedinterestshekeptacolourfulmenagerieincludinganemu,akangaroo,apeacockandthreeShetlandponies.Afterhisdeaththeinventoryofhischattelslistedaviolinandtwokettledrums.

Butin1891hiswife,Ann,diedandfromthereonhislifeturnedupsidedownasthelandboomcollapsedandthedepressionsetin.ThefollowingyearAnnieHurley,thelong-timelicenseeofhisTowerHotelwasdeclaredinsolvent.Insteadoffindinganewlicenseeheputthehotelonthemarket.Itdidn’tsell.TheBoroondaraShireCouncilrefusedtopayhimoutstandingfeesforitsnewshirehall(nowtheCamberwellTownHall).Hesuedandwasawardedpartofthemoney.HefollowedupbyburstingintoaCouncilmeetinginanintoxicatedstateandabusingthemembers.Hewasgivenachancetoapologisebutrefusedandwasfinedthreeguineas.In1895hedied.Forprobate purposes all his real estate was valuedasNilandhispersonalestatewasindeficit.Hediedinsolvent.Hisonlybequestwas£60worthoffurnituretogotoAnnieHurley.Whilemuchofhisworksurvivesandislauded,themanhimselfisforgotten.

Maie Hoban – Further Information

TheJuneeditionofthenewsletterhadaninterestingarticlebySylvia

aboutMaieHoban,whowasanidentityintheperformingartscommunityinmid20thcenturyMelbourne,andwhooperatedaschoolofdramainEastMelbourne. Maie’s reputation was such astogetheranentryintheAustralian Dictionary of Biography.

OutofinterestIdidalittlediggingmyselfaboutherandherhusband.ShehadmarriedDanielJamesHobanin1915shortly before he went to the Western Frontasa2ndLieutenantwiththeAIF.HewasseverelyinjuredatPozieresreceivinggunshotwoundstobothlegs.BiographicalstudiesofMaieindicatethathelostaleg,buthisservicerecordindicatesbothlegswereamputated;averyconfrontingoutcomeeitherway.

WhenHobanenlistedhewasanauctioneerandhecontinuedthislineofworkafterthewar,particularlyinthedevelopmentoftheSpringvalearea.

WhatparticularlycaughtmyattentionwasmaterialinhisservicerecordrelatingtohimstandingasacandidatefortheVictorianParliamentintheseatofBrightoninthe1928election.Thereareanumberofaspectsofthiswhichseemalittlequirkytothe21stcenturyreader.

Firstly,therewasquiteafussinthepressaboutHobanlaunchinglegalproceedingsforlibelagainsttheHerald and Weekly Timesseekingdamagesof5000pounds.Thebasisappearstobethatthe Heraldwrotethat“someofthevotesthatmighthavebeencastfortheLaborcandidate…maygotoMrDJHobanwhorepresentstheCatholicfollowing”.

It’s not clear what statement by the HeraldMrHobanparticularisedinhislibelsuitasamountingtoalibel,butintheendhepolledonlyabout800votes(approx.4%ofthevote)andthenwithdrewhislegalaction.Itwasallperhapspartofan“anypublicityisgoodpublicity”approach,ashecertainlyputhisnameinthespotlightbuttonogreateffect.
