Dear Parents, MR ZAVEN TCHETCHENIAN 1939 - 2018

On behalf of the Armenian General Benevolent Union Alexander Primary School Board, Staff, Parents, Students and community, I would like to convey our sincere condolences to the Tchetchenian families on the passing of our beloved Founding Member Zaven Tchetchenian.

Mr Tchetchenian passed away peacefully on Saturday, 21st July after many years of ill health. His funeral service was held on Wednesday, 25 July at the Armenian Apostolic Church of Holy Resurrection.

As one of the founding committee members and Chairman of the School Board, Mr Tchetchenian’s years of leadership were instrumental in establishing AGBU Alexander Primary School. Together with his friends, Zaven was able to fulfil the dream and vision of the community, by opening the doors of an Armenian day school over 27 years ago, at Sydney’s tranquil suburb of Duffys Forest.

Therefore, long before emails or even fax machines were around, Mr Tchetchenian was set with the difficult task of creating trans-national communication channels between the AGBU Sydney Chapter and the Central Board in New York to pursue the project. Thanks to his personal efforts and dedicated leadership, the Chapter was able to secure the funds to purchase the 5-acer land on which the school was to be built. This was followed with years of fundraising activities and promotion of that vision, which helped to advance the interest of our Benefactors Dr Alex and Isabelle Alexander.

As an AGBU Alex Manoogian Saturday School student, as an AGBU scout member or as part of the theatrical group, I was lucky enough to witness and at times be part of this process. Mr Tchetchenian was not only the father of my school and scouting friend Chris, nor was he just the father of Arto, who I went on stage with for some memorable productions… no, over the years, it became apparent to me and my friends that Zaven was the ‘fatherly-figure’ of the AGBU at the time. During his period as Chairman, he poured all his time and energy into the organisation that in turn helped him reach out and serve the community.

I don’t think one can describe what Alexander School meant for Zaven. It was his new child that filled him up with joy on its success and made him feel the pain when times were hard. However, knowing that over the years hundreds of children from the Australian-Armenian community had attained high quality bilingual education, and will continue to do so for many years to come, made him rest assured that the objective was being fulfilled.

I feel honoured to have known such a wonderful human being. Having grown in his shadow, I have also come to bear witness by hearing all his stories during the initial years of trying to establish Alexander school. Those memories will forever be with us and form part of the history of our wonderful educational institution.

Fellow family and friends, the fruit that we eat today comes from the tree that was planted many years ago by compassionate, visionary and dedicated leaders like Mr Zaven Tchetchenian. He may no longer be with us, but his legacy will forever be part of AGBU Alexander Primary School’s history. May he Rest In Peace.

CPR & EMERGENCY CARE TRAINING On Monday, as part of our Staff Development Day, members of staff and a number of parents, successfully completed the yearly review of their ‘Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation’ (CPR) training. Our trainer from The Australian Lifesaving Academy (the professional first aid training arm of Surf Life Saving NSW) also provided ‘Emergency Care Training’, a course specially designed to meet the needs of school personnel. Once again, this means all of our staff and office personnel were updated with their CPR and trained to deal with emergency situations. They will be back later in the year to conduct the ‘Junior First Aid’ course for the students.

I.C.A.S. SCIENCE RESULTS The Science results of the International Competition and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) were received this week. Congratulations go to Sara Demirjian for achieving Distinction and being placed in the Top 3% of Year 4 participates in Australia. Congratulations to Samson Panikian and Martin Ananyan for achieving Credit awards. Also congratulations to Harry Khatchadourian and Adelin Galstian for achieving Merit awards in ICAS Science Assessment.

All students who participated in the competition were tested on a wide variety of thought provoking skills ranging from observing, measuring, interpreting, predicting and concluding to investigating, reasoning and problem solving. The students’ tests and results are included in this week’s newsletter folder. Challenge yourself with some of the questions which will test the brightest of minds. If you have any queries about your child’s result, please do not hesitate to contact their teacher.

Obituary Mr Zaven Tchetchenian

The following is the final farewell delivered by Mr Manoug Demirjian at the funeral of Mr Tchetchenian, one of our founding leaders and Chairman of the School Board, whose years of leadership were instrumental in establishing AGBU Alexander Primary School.

Արժանապատիւ Հայրեր,

Յարգելի սգակիր յուղարկաւորներ,

Շաբաթ 21 Յուլիսին անհաւատալի եւ յուզումնալից պահեր անցուցինք երբ Հայկական Բարեգործական Ընդհանուր Միութեան Ալեքսանտր Վարժարանի հիմնադիր անդամներէն՝ Տիար Զաւէն Չէչէնեան, վերջնականապէս մերժեց աչքերը բանալ իր յաւիտենական քունէն: Եւ այսպէս անողոք մահը խլեց արժանաւոր հայորդիի մի, խոր վիշտ ու կսկիծ պատճառելով իր հարազատներուն ու բարեկամներուն:

Այսօր թաց աչքերով ու խոր վիշտով հաւաքուած ենք այստեղ, յարգանքի մեր վերջին տուրքը մատուցանելու եւ հրաժեշտ առնելու ազգանուէր անձնաւորութիւնէ մը, տիպար հայորդիէ մը եւ նուիրեալ միութենականէ մը:

Պրն Չէչէնեանի ու իր վարչական ընկեր-ընկերուհիներու տքնաջան աշխատանքի շնորհիւ, մօտաւորապէս երեք տասնամեակներ առաջ ծնունդ առաւ ՀԲԸՄ Ալեքսանտր Վարժարանը: Որպէս հիմնադիր ատենապետ Խնամակալ Մարմնին՝ Պրն Չէչէնեան իր կարելին ըրաւ որ վարժարանը ամուր հիմերով երկար տարիներ ծառայէ Աւստրալահայ համայնքին:

Այսօր, աւելի քան երբեք կը զգանք կարեւորութիւնը այսպիսի կրթական հաստատութեան մը, ու հարց կու տանք թէ ինչպիսի հեռանկար ունեցող ու քաջարի անձնաւորութիւն մը պէտք է ըլլայ, որ առիթը օգտագործելով այսպիսի ծրագիր մը իրականացնէ: Ծրագիր մը՝ ուր ցանուած ծառի շնորհիւ այսօր հարիւրաւոր պտուղներ կամ աշակերտներ աւարտած ըլլալով, կը ծառայեն իրենց ազգին ու հայրենիքին:

Ընդհանրապէս, հրաժեշտի մեր խօսքերուն մէջ գեղեցիկ ածականներ օգտագործելով կը փորձենք մեծարել տուեալ անձնաւորութիւնը: Սակայն այս պարագային պիտի ուզէի անձնական օրինակով մը փորձել հաստատել թէ ինչո՞ւ մեր սիրելի Պրն Չէչէնեանին կը շնորհենք «հեռանկար» ունեցող բացատրականը:

Ուրեմն՝ մեր ընտանիքը Աւստրալիա հաստատուելէն մի քանի տարի ետք, երբ ես տակաւին 9րդ Դասարանի աշակերտ էի, լուր ստացայ որ Պրն Չէչէնեան կը փափաքի տեսակցութիւն ունենալ ծնողքիս հետ միասին: Նկատի առնելով որ տակաւին միայն տարի մը անցած էր որ ՀԲԸՄ-ի Սիտնի վարչութեան օժանդակութեամբ՝ բախտաւորութիւնը ունեցած էի Հայաստան այցելելու, վստահ չէի թէ այս անգամ ինչ էր հանդիպման նպատակը:

ՀԲԸՄ-ի կեդրոնատեղի՝ Ալեքսանտր Սրահը հանդիպելով, Պրն Զաւէնը փորձեց երկար բացատրել ու համոզել թէ ինչու իր փափաքն էր որ ես Կիպրոսի ՀԲԸՄ-ի Մելքոնեան Վարժարանը երթամ ուսանելու: Հոս՝ կը խօսինք 1987 թուականին, երբ ամէնօրեայ վարժարանի հողատարածքը առնուած էր, բայց գոյութիւն չունէր վարժարանը: Սակայն, Պրն Չէչէնեան անոր ապագայ տնօրէնը կ՛ուզէր պատրաստել...

Այն ժամանակուայ պայմանները այնպէս էին, որ որոշ հիմնական պատճառներով կարելի չեղաւ իմ Մելքոնեան երթալու ծրագիրը իրականացնել:

Տարիներ ետք, կեանքի անիւը այնպէս բերաւ որ ես համալսարան աւարտելէս կարճ ժամանակ մը ետք սկսայ դասաւանդել ՀԲԸՄ


Ալեքսանտր Վարժարանը: Ապա մի քանի տարիներ ետք երբ օրուայ Խնամակալ Մարմինը նոր որոշած էր զիս փոխանցել Տնօրէնութեան պաշտօնը, ես տպագրական գործով մը հանդիպեցայ Պրն Չէչէնեանի Kopy Stop ընկերութիւնը:

Երբ հանդիպման ընթացքին յայտնեցի, որ ես պիտի ստանձնեմ նոր տնօրէնի պաշտօնը... Պրն Զաւէնը՝ պահ մը, լուր ժպիտով մը աչքերուս նայեցաւ ու գլխի թեթեւ շարժումով հասկցուց թէ այդ վայրկեանին, ինքն ու ես նոյն բանը կը յիշէինք... 20 տարի առաջ, ծնողքիս հետ հանդիպման ժամանակ մեր ունեցած խօսակցութիւնը:

Ահաւասիկ, այսպիսի հեռանկարով անձնաւորութիւնը մըն էր Զաւէնը:

Այո, Զաւէնին համար Ալեքսանտը Վարժարանը կարծես նոր զաւակ մըն էր, որ ինք պատրաստ էր ամէն քնով պաշտպանելու: Այս իրավիճակը ի յայտ եկաւ մի քանի տարիներ առաջ, երբ վարժարանը հարցականի տակ դրուած էր: Ան իր անհանգիստ վիճակին մէջ ի գործ դրաւ իր կարելիութեան սահմաններուն մէջ օժանդակել ու նեցուկ կանգնիլ՝ ապահովելով անոր ապագան:

Այսօր, մեր սիրելի ղեկավարը մտած է իր հանգիստ քունը, քաջ գիտնալով որ իր ու իր ընկերներուն կերտած վարժարանը ամուր հիմքերու վրայ է, ու անոր ապագան փայլուն է ու լուսաւոր: Վերջին տարիներուն, ամէն մէկ լուր որ ան կը ստանար ու կը կարդար վարժարանի մասին, իրեն համար մեծ գոհունակութիւն կը պատճառէր: Հպարտ էր անոր ամէն մի քայլով, ու կարծես նոր երանդ մը եւ ուժ մը կը ստանար, որ ան դիմադրէր իր ցաւերը:

Սիրելի Զաւէն, այսօր բոլորս տխուր ենք ու սգաւոր: Այսօր կը բաժնուիս մեզմէ, սակայն կ՛երթաս միանալու Ալեք Մանուկեաններու եւ Ալեքսանտրներու անմահներու շարքին: Անկենդան մարմինդ կը յանձնենք սեւ հողին, որուն վրայ բլրացած ծաղկեպսակները վաղը պիտի թառամին, բայց ձեր յիշատակը պիտի մնայ անշէջ: Կը խոստանանք շարունակել ծնունդ տուած առաքելութիւնդ՝ միշտ վառ պահելով մեզ ընծայուած սրբազան ուխտը:

Յանուն ՀԲԸՄ Ալեքսանտը Վարժարանի Խնամական Մարմնին, Տնօրէնութեան, ուսուցչական կազմին, աշակերտութեան ու ծնողքներուն, մեր զգացուած ցաւակցութիւնները կը յայտնենք Պրն Չէչէնեանի տիկնոջ, զաւակներուն, թոռներուն, հարազատներուն, բարեկամներուն եւ սգակիր բոլոր պարագաներուն:

Սիրելիներ, շատ է թիւը, «Բանաստեղծներու Իշխան», Վահան Թէքէեանի տուած խորհուրդներուն եւ խրատականներուն: Իր նշանաւոր «Հաշուեյարդար» ոտանաւորին մէջ, «Կեանքէն ինծի ի՞նչ մնաց» հարցումէն ետք, կը պատասխանէ՛ ըսելով՝ «ինչ որ տուի՛ ուրիշին, տարօրինակ ա՛յդ միայն»:

Թող հողը թեթեւ գայ ընկերոջ վրայ:
