Principal’s Message Hello Colt Families! Congratulations to our Continental Colt Students for success- fully making it through the first month of school. As we en- ter into the month of September we have many important events that will be taking place. Benchmark testing will be taking place on September 4 th and 5 th for grades 6 th -8 th . The following week on September 9 th and 10 th grades 2 nd through 5 th will be completing their benchmark tests. Tests will be on English Language Arts and Mathematics. The first benchmark test of the school year is considered a pre-test and is used as a baseline to refer back to and analyze the progress each individual student is making. These benchmark tests allow for us as educators, to personalize academic interventions spe- cific to the needs of each student in conjunction with daily class work and weekly formative assessments. Please make sure that students get good rest prior to testing days and have a nutritious breakfast. If you have any questions re- garding testing please do not hesitate to contact me. I would be happy answer your questions or concerns. Our Board Meeting will be taking place on Monday September 9 th at 6:00 p.m. in the Community Room. Please join us as we will recognize Colt of the Month Students and will be report- ing on important school-wide information. We would love to have you join us. Board meetings occur monthly and we wel- come you all to attend. On September 19 th and 20 th Parent Teacher Conferences will be taking place. During these days dismissal will be at 12:00 p.m. I will be walking around during conferences and I look forward to meeting you. This month also holds many opportunities to go out and sup- port our Continental Colt Athletes. There are many cross country meets, football games, and volleyball games through- out this month. I am excited to make it out to these events throughout the month to support our students. Please visit our school webpage https://www.continentalesd.org/ to see the schedule of sporting events under Upcoming Events on the main page. Continental School District #39

Mission Statement The Continental school community strives to achieve excellence in academics, life skills

and character.

Vision Statement Building for the Future – Learning, Cooperating, and Caring

Superintendent’s Corner Amazing Colt Families, Thank you all for a wonderful start of a new school year. We appreciate all of the supplies and materials that you have graciously donated to our school! We also appreciate those who came to Meet and Greet and demonstrated a great deal of patience in the long middle school lines. Every year we debrief and brainstorm to see how we can make our events smoother. We are growing and may be needing to go to two Meet and Greet evenings next year. Open House update—Last year the Administrative Advisory team of teachers had discussed moving Open House to the Fall or Spring. With Meet and Greet occurring staff felt that Open House was too soon to have students’ work displayed or to have accurate academic performance to report. Thus, we decided to hold Elementary Open House October 24, 2019 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Middle School Open House will be on October 30, 2019 from 4pm-5:30 p.m. Progress reports will have been sent home and parent conferences will have taken place. This will allow Open House to be a true Open House experience, where students will have work samples to share with you. We are also working on a new Middle School Parent Conference format that will be coming soon! This year we are committed to enhancing communication and to send progress reports every 4.5 weeks. Quarter grades should not be a surprise and parents will have a better idea on how students are doing prior to the end of the quarter. Please continue to check grades on ParentVue and ask clarify-ing questions as you need them. We are all committed to “getting and staying in the game” of teaching and learning and want everyone to have a “winning year”! Go Colts!

Students should have received IXL usernames and pass-words. As a reminder, we are fortunate enough to have re-ceived a grant from Freeport McMoran to allow us to pur-chase this program. This is a great program for students to accelerate their skills or practice skills they may be strug-gling with. Let’s make it a GREAT year! Sincerely, Ms. Roxana Rico Proud Superintendent

Hello Parents and Guardians, These last four weeks I have been enjoying meeting parents, working with students, and am very excited to start our first semester's small groups next week after the Labor Day weekend!! Small groups being of-fered in 1st Semester are: 1. Peace group (stress, anger, emotional regulation) 2. Respect group (self-esteem and behavior) 3. Changing families group (loss, divorce, deployment) If you think your child could benefit from one of these small groups that meet once a week for 30 min. please contact me at [email protected] or feel free to call me at 625-4581 ext. 7306. Our school is very excited to be bringing in the Kelso's Choices socio-emotional curriculum that I will be teaching during our classroom lessons! Kelso's Choices is a program that helps all K-8 grade students solve problems with guiding them with 9 different conflict resolution options. The kids love the fun frog named Kelso and there are real life scenar-ios for the older kids to watch on DVD with ways to solve big problems. More information will come in the next newsletter but you can check out Kelso's Choices by visiting www.kelsoschoice.com. Our Colt Chat forms are being used and that is our universal school ticket we use for students that need to come talk to the counselor. It is used only for grades 3-8 and they can fill it out about how they are feeling or what topic they want to talk to me about. Students put the Colt Chat in the mailbox which is outside my office and I have students speak with me about their concerns. Our first Colt Buck Store last Friday was a great success! It was exciting to help out with it and see all those amazing Colt Bucks that students earned being turned in for their prizes! We are also asking that if anyone has any Colt Buck Store donations (pencils, erasers, mini toys, books, etc.) please bring them to the front office and we will gladly use them for our next store. I am looking forward to a great school year and excited to start heading into some cooler temps this fall season! Kind Regards, Kris Godfryt, M.S.
