The new Apprenticeship Standard will be an opportunity for employers across all STEM sectors to upskill senior staff in the latest NDT industry qualifications. The Apprenticeship will be delivered through a combination of on-the-job training and e-learning, using the University of Northampton’s innovative online training platform. Stephen Crawley, Chief Operating Officer at Skills Training UK, said: “We are delighted to be working with the university to launch one of our first degree level Apprenticeships and offer yet another innovative training solution to support the engineering workforce. “We know from our work within the sector that the NDT community has an ageing workforce and that there is a growing skills gap. “The NDT Engineer Degree Apprenticeship addresses that challenge and is an exciting opportunity to deliver training of the highest possible standard so that the next generation of NDT specialists have the appropriate skills desired by employers.” On completion of the Apprenticeship, NDT Engineer Apprentices will hold a degree (BSc NDT or BEng NDT) approved by the BINDT that allows them to conduct and manage NDT procedures globally. Since launching the Level 2 Operator and Level 3 Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standards late last year, there has been growing interest from young people who have completed A-Levels and have a passion for engineering. Sam Cunningham, Technical Sales and Account Manager at Skills Training UK, said: “We had 200 talented individuals apply for one of our recently advertised NDT Apprenticeship roles. For the fi rst time ever, fi ve leading specialist NDT training schools came together to discuss how they can continue to raise awareness of NDT Apprenticeships, upskill the existing workforce and encourage new talent into the industry.

Meeting hosts Lavender International were joined by representatives from IMechE, TWI, Aerospace Inspection Ltd and the International School of Aerospace.

Skills Training UK also gave an update on its NDT Apprenticeship programmes – with 67% of those who have enrolled aged between 16-25 and a growing interest from women looking to join the profession.

of Non-Destructive Testing’s (BINDT) Apprenticeship Schemes, said: “To get several representatives from the NDT training schools to meet and discuss ways they can improve and enhance the Apprenticeships to reach new audiences is extremely progressive for the sector and shows the vitality and importance of the skills gap agenda.”

Skills Training UK is also now working with specialist NDT training schools Testia Ltd and South West School of NDT to deliver end point assessment and technical support for its NDT Apprenticeship programmes – off ering more choice and fl exibility for employers looking to upskill staff and recruit new NDT talent.
