Cotton Village Hall Restoration ProjectBuilt in 1922 on land donated by R H Allen, Cotton village hall has served the local community for the past 92 years, as a venue for many different activities, for organisations and individuals. I have been told many stories of its uses, from a centre for mass inoculation in the 50s, weddings, village shows, café’s, jubilee celebration (new and old) polling station and once a visit from 007 James Bond most of the village was shaken, but others not stirred.An article in the East Anglian Daily Times recalls the occasion of its opening by a local dignitary Mr G Woolard who congratulated the village with its new hall and its new Chairman Mr. E .E .Scuffins. The new treasurer Mrs J Williams told the packed hall that the cost of the hall had been £271 0s 0p, payments to the builder Mr S H Mulley on receipt, was £178 19s 5½p, the balance £52 12s 10½p was covered by loans from the committee.A few weeks before Christmas 2012, the hall was vandalized the evening before the Christmas Cafe and fair. Our insurers only were required to pay out for repairs and loss of equipment, though we could see that we had a greater problem with the fact that the wall that we could see in the window cavities, was rotten. With enormous financial aid from the villagers of Cotton, its Clubs and Organisations along with approaching local authorities, local and national charities, plus fund raising events, we had enough finances in February 2014 to approach local builders for quotes to undertake the work. Considering we had only started the process in December 2013 we had little time to sit and contemplate as the whole project was moving at an incredible rate. R M Roper was our choice for the build and he and his team have undertaken the task with the greater degree of skill, professionalism and enthusiasm. Under the project management of Bert Bertoloni who, along with the committee, has been magnificent, we completed the whole process in one year.The new hall is there for you all to see. No change in size or design but now with new walls, Fire doors, resurfaced flat roof and weather proof cladding that requires little if any maintenance, along with complete redecorations to the hall and kitchen. Come along on the 13th Sept to the Cotton Hall Re-launching Day between 2pm-4pm when we are to have a tea party to celebrate the hall and its continuing use and versatility.

Annual General Meeting of the ‘Good Neighbour Scheme’

The AGM of the Bacton, Cotton & Wyverstone Good Neighbour Scheme will take place on Tuesday 30th September in the Community Room, St. Mary's Church, Bacton starting at 7.30pm.All volunteers, residents & users of the scheme are welcome.A reports on the last year's work will be given and the election of the committee for the coming year will take place.Requests for lifts to Ipswich and Bury hospitals have increased to such an extent that we have a shortage of volunteers who are able to undertake these trips.Therefore the scheme is looking for new volunteers who are willing to take and bring back residents to and from Ipswich and Bury.Anyone who would be interested in joining the scheme would be very welcome to come along to the meeting.

I wrote earlier this year about the different varieties of tomato I had selected for this growing season. The tumbling variety Tom Red have done very well. I have been picking them for the last two weeks. They are plum shaped and very sweet. They haven't developed any large size but considering they have been grown in hanging baskets, which has contained their root growth, they have cropped very well and continue to do so.

The black variety of tomato called Black Opel have cropped at the same time. Again very sweet in flavour but small in size. Still a good talking point and something different in the garden. Although they have Black in their title I would say they are a very dark purple rather than black. They have lovely shiny skins and stand out in a salad on the plate.

My Golden Sunrise variety are not quite ready for picking yet and the Lemon Sherbet will follow on after that.

I went around my garden this morning just giving the bushes a light trimming to keep them in shape. Keep dead-heading your roses this will encourage further flowering later on in the season. Any other flowers that have gone by their best dead-head them and you will get further blooms.

We've had some strong winds lately and a number of my eating apples have been blown to the ground. They have a nice size to them but they are not really ready for eating until next month but rather than waste them, they have been peeled and cooked with added sugar and served with hot custard. Makes a nice treat after your main meal.

Keep cutting your lawn on a weekly basis it keeps the garden looking nice and fresh. Don't forget to edge up the borders it adds the finishing touch. Clear away any debris.

Now is the time to make a plan about which beds you intend to use for bulb planting this year. You may need to start thinking about digging in some nourishment for the soil.

BACTON & DISTRICT W.I.

On the 21st of July many of us were pleased to attend a Garden Tea at the house of one of our members. Doreen Ditton kindly invited us to her lovely home and garden in Bacton and we enjoyed a splendid summer tea of sandwiches, home-made cakes and strawberries & cream. Doreen arranged it all for us together with Angela Cook so we had nothing to do but enjoy ourselves. There were garden games and Angela had conspired with Doreen to compile a short but puzzling quiz using objects around the house and garden. Angela also co-erced myself and Rosy Black to provide a short entertainment with her. This consisted of three Music Hall songs, a reading of a cautionary tale by Hilaire Belloc and a Monologue by Marriott Edgar entitled ‘The Runcorn Ferry’. We dressed for the period and I can only hope that our members enjoyed watching as much as we enjoyed performing. Many thanks go to Doreen for opening up her house to us and to Angela Cook for all her hard work on the organisation and preparation. Thanks also to Doreen’sdaughter Sarah and granddaughter Issy for helping on the day. They tirelessly prepared food, made tea and waited on us hand and foot, ensuring that we had to do nothing but sit back and enjoy the sunshine.In our August the 4th meeting we were pleased to note that our presence at the Bacton Fayre had been very well received. Thank you all for your

support and thanks to all those who entered our competitions. Thanks also to Angela Cook and Doreen Ditton for being our Bacton Fayre sub-committee and making sure all arrangements were in place. Not forgetting Angela Jenner’s husband and his able assistant who erected the Gazebo and took it down for us.The speaker for our August meeting was Philip Hadwen, who came to talk to us about ‘Victorian Felixstowe’. He brought with him to illustrate his talk slides which were from genuine Victorian photographs taken in and around Felixstowe and as such were very interesting. Each slide was accompanied by an explanation and description and many of us learnt a lot that we didn’t know about how the town of Felixstowe began and developed all those years ago. I used to live in Hamilton Gardens in Felixstowe and after the talk Philip was able to tell me when my former house was first built which was very interesting to me on a personal level. It is likely that at some point we will be asking Philip Hadwen back to continue with the next instalment!Our WI is continuing to evolve and one of our newest members, Hazel Laflin, has started up an evening Scrabble group. This will suit all of us who like to play but who find Tuesday afternoons difficult.

Our next meeting will be on Monday September 1st when Dr Christine Redington will talk on the topical subject of ‘Women at work in WWI’.

As ever visitors are welcome at £3.00 up to a maximum of three visits.

Spinning Wheel Theatre is a growing company based just outside Stowmarket. Their mission is to create innovative productions and provide creative opportunities for rural communities in the East of England.In 2012 Spinning Wheel produced a short tour of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, which toured to villages in Suffolk and performed at the RSC Dell Theatre in Stratford upon Avon. The cast was a combination of recent acting graduates, supported in their first professional role, and five aspiring actors who were given a high quality production experience and skills mentoring.

This successful experience was built upon in 2013 when Spinning Wheel was approached by the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds to deliver their rural tour. They co-commissioned the company’s production of Two by Jim Cartwright, which performed across Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire in 12 venues.

Spinning Wheel Theatre consists of three theatre practitioners who specialise in creating original theatre projects supported by work with young people and communities.

Sandringham Flower Show was visited by a party of approximately 50 on July 30th in very fine weather.After joining the throngs to catch a glimpse of H.R.H. Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, with actress Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith following behind, the huge marquees beckoned.There was plenty to admire in the horticultural and cookery exhibits and lots of outside stalls where a purchase could be made.There were also Show Gardens where the public were invited to vote for their favourite and a Gardeners Forum with Chris Beardshaw, Alan Mason and Nick Hamilton who is the son of the late Geoff Hamilton.The weary but happy party arrived back at the coach laden with their purchases and many thanks are due to Chairman Diane Gladders for organising the day out so efficiently.The Chairman and Members then concentrated on their own Bacton Flower Show which was held just three days later and was just as enjoyable.

The Parish Council meton the 30th July

Progress is being made on the Vehicle Activated Sign scheme, hopefully once the finance has been sorted we will be able to proceed.

Two planning applications have been presented to the Council, a conversion of an outbuilding to residential use at Jasmine Farm, Wickham Road; and construction of ménage at Oak Tree Farm, Willow Lane were both supported by the Council.

During the next few weeks a list of all potholes in the roads of Cotton will be compiled highlighting the most serious cases, this will then be passed to the Highways department asking them to deal with the problem as matter of urgency.

The condition of the “Common Land” in Scuffins Lane has been discussed and it is hoped that it can be restored to its original condition as soon as possible.

From time to time the Council receive consultation documents on a wide range of subjects, the majority of these are for public consultation. If you would like your opinion on any of these matters to be taken into account check the web-site from time to time, instructions on how to submit your opinions are given with each consultation.

We are still looking for a volunteer to become the Local History recorder for Cotton (not too arduous a task) if you are interested please contact me or any Councillor.

The next scheduled meeting is to be held on the 1st October at 7.30pm in the village hall

It was a glorious warm and sunny day for this years Bacton Fayre with master of ceremonies John Webb once again working tirelessly throughout the day commentating on all the events taking place and there was certainly plenty to see and do for all the family. Parachute Display Team, Traditional Fun Fair, Stalls and Trade Stands. Vintage and Classic Cars, Crafts, Children's Novelty Races, Falconry Display, Children’s Entertainer, the Stowmarket Concert Band, Bar, Barbecue, Teas, and much much more.There was a climbing wall for those fortunate enough to have the strength

to body weight to have a go and it proved very popular!There were plenty of refreshments, the rousing Stowmarket Concert Band, the ever popular flower and vegetable show marquee and lots of stalls for retail therapy. This year Romany Amelia world renowned fortune teller and Granddaughter of the famous Petrolengro attended the fair and there was the wonderful display of vintage and classic cars and motorcycles.The ever popular Bacton Dog show was back for another year andthere were plenty of rides for the kids and time for another beer or a Pimms at the Lions Den whilst waiting for the Princes of Wales Royal Regiment Free Fall team to descend on the Bacton Fairground. All over for another year - but what a great day.

BACTON FAYRE FUN DOG SHOW 2nd August

This year’s Fun Dog Show was again held inside the Fayre and attracted a good entry of mostly local dogs. Winner of Best In Show was the Cocker Spaniel ‘Hector’, seen here with his owner Karen Bagshaw on the right of the picture next to our judge Susan Robinson from Bury St Edmunds. Next along is Reserve BIS Jane Manvers and ‘Poppy’ the Border Terrier, then Best Puppy, Mary Hawkins with her black Retriever ‘Dolly’.There were fun classes like ‘Dog with the Waggiest Tail’, more serious classes for pedigree dogs and then the really fun classes - this year as well as the popular Best Sausage Catcher class, judged by a jury from the audience and again won by the brilliant ‘Dylan’, we had a Sack Race which was great fun to watch and worked better than we’d hoped, sure to have that again next year. Summer Luncheon 2014Sunday AUGUST 3rd

On August 3rd the annual Summer Lunch was held in the marquee on the Manor Meadow. It was well attended and there was a wonderful buzz of conversation emanating from the marquee as everyone arrived. A glass of wine was included in the ticket price and some chose the option of buying a bottle to take to the table. Water and fruit juice was also available.

There followed the usual splendid buffet of Pork Pie, Ham, Quiche and a wide variety of salads. Desserts were popular, there being many different and varied home-made desserts from Apple Pie to Pineapple Pavlova and beyond. In addition to this was the usual staple of gigantic meringues served with raspberries and cream. After the meal we were treated to an entertainment by Nigel ‘boy’ Syer and an Auction run by professional auctioneer John Black whose local knowledge enabled him to inject humour into the proceedings thereby encouraging enthusiastic bidding throughout.

All proceeds from the Auction and the Lunch go to the church, which is an important Historic building both locally and nationally and needs to be maintained as such.

Haughley Hoofers have been dancing for about 30 yearsand have performed all over the country at various festivals and abroad in Belgium, France and Germany. We dance a form of Morris Dancing which has its origins in the spinning and weaving towns of Lancashire and Cheshire. These were originally processional dances performed by the mill workers on high days and holidays, each town having its own dance. The dancers wore clogs - their everyday footwear - and, to add to the show, carried sticks or bobbins from the mills decorated with ribbons and bells. We have our clogs specially made and they are surprisingly comfortable.

Our performance season this yearbegan with St George’s Day celebrations with other local sides

in Hundon but since then, amongst other events, we have danced at the Museum of East Anglian Life, Folk at the Boat in Ipswich and the Sheringham Lobster Potty Festival.

We shall also take part in Suffolk’s own Folk Festival, Folk East, in Mid August and in Days of Dance with other sides in Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds during September.

We always need more Dancers (female) and Musicians (both sexes). All you need is a basically good level of fitness. If you play a musical instrument come along - it doesn’t matter what you play as long as it’s portable.

We practice in the winter on Sunday nights 7.30 - 9.30 in Haughley Village Hall starting 5th October. Come along any evening before December to try it out or ring Gill Brett on 01449 673518 to find out more.

A Word from the RectoryDear All,Something I love about living in England is experiencing the variety of the changing seasons. Having spent time living in parts of the world where the seasons are relatively stable and unvaried I really appreciate the flow from one season into the next and the changes in nature as we move through the year. September to me, more than any other month, feels like a real transition point in the year as we move from the bright warmth of summer to cooler mellower autumn days.As I write this on yet another day of beautiful sunshine, this year, at least the spring and summer, seem to have the distinct marking out of the seasons that I remember, (or think I remember), from childhood. Which puts me in mind of God’s promise from the Bible that “as long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, will never cease”. Gods holds it all together in perfect harmony as one season moves into the next.Speaking of harvest, September also marks the beginning of the harvest season.There will be a number of opportunities to come and celebrate harvest and to thank God for his goodness at any of the harvest services throughout the Benefice.Details of all the harvest services and events during September can be found elsewhere in the magazine.Bacton Church has its first Gift Day on 27th September, there is an open invitation for anyone to come to the church between 10am and 12pm to see all the work going on in the church and to make a gift if they would like to.The Historic Churches sponsored Cycle ride or ‘Ride and Stride’, is taking place on Saturday September 13th. If you haven’t taken part before why not join in this year either as a cyclist or walker, travelling as near or as far as you wish. You will have the chance to spend a day, or just an hour, raising money for a good cause, and have the pleasure of visiting some of our beautiful Suffolk Churches’ in the process. Sponsorship forms are available now in all the churches or from Rosy Black on 781506. This month we welcome the new Methodist Minister Revd Rita Carr into the area. Her welcome service will be on 14th September at 6.00pm at Trinity Methodist Church Bury St Edmunds.In September there is a lot going on in nature and a lot going on in the local church too, join us if you can, you will be made very welcome. Car Boot SaleDespite the onset of rain just before 10.00am, we made a profit of £350 for St Andrew's. Many thanks to all those who helped, who came to sell their wares and those who came to buy. The sale of bacon rolls was brisk and the cake stall was busy. Thank you to Bacton Primary School who let us set up a stall after school on Monday to sell the remaining cakes. We will be doing it again (but not this year) There were requests for a 'table top' sale undercover, so that will be incorporated next time. Jane de Beer

CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S LIFELINE

On the evening of Friday August 1st we held our leaving party for the children, Hosts and Supporters at the Cedars hotel in Stowmarket. The children performed a concert for which they had been practising hard and then went on to enjoy a disco especially geared towards them. Everyone who attended had a great time and Sunday 3rd August saw the return to Belarus of the 18 children who had been staying with families in the local areas for the last four weeks. Although a few tears were shed at departure the children were soon cheerfully looking forward to being reunited with their families once more and sharing the many happy memories they take with them.

Not only must we thank our Host families for their work in this project but also the many people who support us throughout the year, raising funds to enable us to bring the children and providing sponsored outings and events for them whilst they are here, giving their time free of charge, providing valuable dental and optical services free of charge, collecting clothing, donating medicines to take home and many other items which all benefit either these children or those at home in Belarus.

Unfortunately the children still suffer with the same terrible dental problems caused by their poor diet and living conditions, this year saw a total of 51 extractions and 42 fillings within the group and all carried out on the same day! This is the worst we have ever experienced.

Our special thanks must go to all of our Sponsors and Supporters, many of whom I have never met but who continue to help us in the background year on year, it seems like only yesterday we started this group but it has now been seven years with over 150 children having been brought to the Mid Suffolk area for recuperation health breaks. So many local people have contributed to our cause and supported us in many ways with donations and gifts for the children and via our Charity Shop. It is not possible to mention everyone here but without you the children would not have had the wonderful time they have had, this is appreciated more than you will know.

We are especially pleased to report that three of the children have now received Sponsorship from local people through our Family Support Program. These children have been chosen by their Hosts Families or others who have met them during their visit and will receive a sum of money each month to help them. The Sponsors have the reassurance that they know exactly who the money is going to and we will assist in giving progress reports each time we visit the area.

Almost everyone enjoys taking photographs these days. However if you want to develop your skills and take more satisfying photographs, joining a camera club is an excellent step.

Stowmarket & District Camera Club is a small, active and long established club for those interested in photography. We have a membership of around 25 people with a wide range of ages, backgrounds and photographic interests and we would like to increase that membership.

Regular meetings are held at Stowmarket Community Centre, Hillside, Stowmarket, IP14 2BD, usually on the 2nd & 4th Monday of the month (between September & June).
