GOOD NEWS

Piñatas, cinco de mayo, and feasting on tamales at Christmas time. These are all Mexican traditions with which most Americans are

familiar. But there is one tradition rooted in the Mexican culture which is unfamiliar to most in our community. Quinceañera is a long standing Mexican tradition of celebrating the transition of a young girl becoming a woman. Full of rituals, the tradition, which takes place on or around a girl’s fifteenth birthday, is marked by a thanksgiving Mass followed by dancing and the sharing of a meal. Many in this small community had never even heard of a Quinceañera much less been invited to participate in one. But over the last two years many in Sandpoint have taken part in various Quinceañera celebrations of young Sandpoint women. Rick and Beatrice Young’s daughter, Cassie, marked her celebration last year at their home surrounded by family and friends, and the year prior to that Chris and Elizabeth Young, no relation to the other Young family, celebrated their oldest daughter Teresa’s

Quinceañera. This past June, Teresa’s younger sister, Trinity, also held her 15th birthday celebration. Elizabeth Young grew up in San Diego and her parents were born and raised in Mexico. Elizabeth said as a child she was allowed to speak only Spanish and had to learn English at school. For her, it was very important that her daughters know their heritage and participate in many of the traditions of the Mexican culture. “It was one of the gifts I wanted to give to my parents, to see that we are carrying on the traditions of our culture,” said Elizabeth.

For the celebration, the young Mexican woman wears a beautiful dress and tiara. “They are princesses in God’s

eyes,” explained Elizabeth. For both Teresa and Trinity’s celebrations, a court of seven females and seven males were chosen. The girls chosen to be part of the court are those friends upon whom the birthday celebrant will rely to guide her through life’s ups and downs, to keep her on the right path and with whom she wants to surround herself. “The boys (chosen to be on the court) represent who the girl will someday marry,” explained Elizabeth, adding that each of the boys possesses a quality that the girl hopes her husband one day will possess.

Traditionally it is family members who serve on the young woman’s court, however being far away from their culture, Elizabeth knew that would not be possible. “It became very much a community event,” she said. “We were very blessed to have friends who wanted to be a part of it.”

The celebration begins with a mass and is a time when the young woman commits to live a Chris-tian life and thanks God for the blessings bestowed upon her. During the mass, the young woman collects a rose, which represents friendship, from each of her female court members and the boys wrap the roses together with a ribbon representing a bonding together of that friendship. The young woman then presents the roses to the patron saint of Mexico, Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Darbey Scrimsher was one of Trinity Young’s friends invited to participate in the celebration. “I was amazed. It was so beautiful and nothing like I had ever been involved in before,” said Darbey. The girls and boys in both Teresa and Trinity’s courts, spent several months, meeting one to two times a week, learning the special waltz dance they perform during the Quinceañera celebration.

Also during the dance there is a special father daughter dance. Until that time the young girl wears flat shoes, a representation of her childhood. During the dance her father places a pair of high heels on his daughter’s feet. Referred to as the transformation of the shoes, it is another symbol of the transition of a young girl becoming a woman.

Teresa said that for her and her sister it has been very important to continue the tradition of their mother’s

culture. “It means a lot to both me and Trinity,” said Teresa, who adds that it was important to her to do it for her grand-parents as well. “I wanted to make them proud.” And for those like Darbey Scrimsher who had never participated in such an event, it has left a lasting impression on her. “I was honored to be a part of it,” said Darbey. “I wanted to embrace it to the fullest.”

Students in 8th-12th grade earn their high school credits using an online curriculum called Ignitia, with teachers mentoring the academic progress and pace and providing tutoring when needed. The students have the freedom to work on their subjects with more flexibility of choice and time; from their

own laptop or any internet-accessible computer. Ignitia offers a wider variety of courses with a Christian worldview, while still meeting and often exceeding Idaho state standards with a focus on mastery of content before moving on to the next concept. In addition to the choices and freedoms students enjoy, they can spend more time on class projects, science labs, and art, in addition to regular P.E. and field trips. Students have the benefits of an individualized education, with opportunities for on-campus and dual enrollment classes, athletics, and other events, without missing the social connection with their friends and the academic time of teacher-led instruction. Beginning the summer after their sophomore year, students can enjoy the benefits of

taking dual-enrollment classes with North Idaho College to earn college credits to get a head start on college while finishing high school.

The economy is recovering, but unfortunately, growth isn’t accelerating as it normally does in a recovery. The economy grew at an annual rate of 3% in the last quarter of 2011, but the pace slowed again early in

2012 to 1.5%. A sustained recovery still is not under way. There are 3 key strategies we can all use to skyrocket our sales over the next 12 months. 1) Have a Growth Plan“You can have brilliant ideas, but if you can’t get them across, your ideas will not get anywhere.” —Lee Iacocca Being located on the perfect corner doesn’t mean your capitalizing on your growth potential. A real growth plan has the method whereby your ideas will be delivered to potential consumers. Your brand needs to be consistently and effectively broadcasted in order to establish your reputation. 2) Set Yourself and Business ApartDon’t follow the crowd, dare to be different and seek out ways to brand your business apart from the competition. Stay on top of the trends and stay current with the way people are connecting. Incorporate these things into your business and how you are relating to the consumer. KEY: Have an up-to-date website and Facebook page! 3) Connect With Your CommunityConsumers are trending back to local communities to purchase their goods. Reaching the locals has never been more important than now and finding unique, effective and affordable advertising is the key element in branding yourself. The people that are reading the “local” publications because of the content are doing so because they want to feel connected. This is where you want to consistently brand your message. This is where your will start to connect at the community level.

“A trusted referral influences people more than the best broadcasted message. A trusted referral is the Holy Grail of Advertising.” —Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook For more information on growing your business, visit www.like-media.com or give us a call at 208.904.3838.

Know Your Heart HealthPROTECT THE HEALTH OF YOUR HEART

We all know that keeping up with our heart health is an important thing to do. We all know that there are a wide variety of factors that cause heart problems, and we should know by now that

there are some basic ways to help protect the health of our hearts. What many people do not realize, however, is that keys to their heart health may be different than keys to the heart health of others.

There are almost as many strategies and tips for having good heart health as there are people with hearts in the world. It is important that each person takes the time to learn about his or her own heart health and to learn about the possible methods of ensuring heart health for years to come.

One of the best ways for anyone to become familiar with the needs of their heart is to see a physician. Schedule a visit to see your doctor and plan to discuss your heart health with him or her. If you can think of any questions or concerns you have regarding your heart health, write them down and bring them along. It will also be very helpful if you have a record of your extended family’s heart health history. It is likely that your physician will want to discuss more than just your own heart

health. He or she will want to look for patterns or trends that have affected other people you’re related to.

A physician can help you determine not only the current health of your heart, but also give you a better understanding of specific things you can do to help prevent heart attack or heart disease. For some people, the most significant factor in achieving and maintaining heart health is to change their diet. The foods we choose to put into our bodies affect our heart health in more ways than we know. Eating large amounts of

sugar, carbohydrates or processed foods will eventually take their toll on our heart health. Your physician can set you up with a dietician who specializes in creating unique diet plans that promote heart health.

For other people, it is their exercise and physical fitness habits that a physician will address. Heart health can be significantly altered based upon a person’s level of exercise. Your physician will be able to help you create a fitness plan that will be effective for you and your heart health needs. It is never too late to take your heart health seriously. Make an appointment to see your physician today.

Help with Memory LossBROUGHT TO YOU BY THE BRIDGE AT SANDPOINT

Alzheimer’s disease is an incurable disease that effects ones memory as it progresses. Alzheimer’s disease most commonly effects the brains of seniors, causing their memories to fade away forever. Not all seniors

who become occasionally forgetful have Alzheimer’s disease. This article will give you some tips about what to look for if you think it may be Alzheimer’s.

A great tip for improving your memory is to make sure that you are getting enough sleep at night. This is crucial because without enough sleep, your brain will not be able to operate at its peak potential and you will not be able to process all that you need to.

Most of us live in routines. Our lives are centered around having the same routine each day or each week. If we stray from that routine it can keep us from being able to remember things. Your routine is what is holding back your memory. Change how you do things each day to force your brain to develop new ways of remembering and sorting information.

If you want to improve your memory, avoid cramming. Last minute memorization can help you remember things, but the benefits are usually only short term. Try to learn new information gradually. Skills and information learned over time are more likely to stick with you. Cramming usually means you’ll forget it as quickly as you learned it.

A great tip for improving your memory is to make sure that you change your study habits from time to time. This is a good procedure because it will help to prevent your memory from becoming stagnant. Changing your location will help to stimulate your mind and open up your ability to store more in your long term memory.

Making many associations to something can help someone remember it much easier. An example of this would be connecting whatever one wants to remember to a personal story that the individual has. By making that connection to something that they already remember they can help themselves remember the new information as well.

As we age, memory loss can become a real problem. The best way to protect yourself from memory loss is to increase brain activity. Reading, doing crossword puzzles and learning something new like playing a musical instrument can keep your brain healthy and keep memory loss at bay.

Another helpful way to help you remember information such as people’s names, is to use images that will jog your memory when need be. Using images to supplement facts and figures is an easy way to categorize the information, but will help you associate the important details in the short and the long term.

Sleep is vital to maintaining mental clarity and memory. By avoiding sleep, you make your senses and mind foggier, hurting your ability to focus and piece together information. In addition, during sleep, your brain forges pathways that lead to memory. Getting good sleep (and a good amount of it) will improve your memory.

As stated in the beginning of this article, Alzheimer’s is an incurable disease that effects the memory of seniors. Occasional forgetfulness is very normal, while forgetting all the time may be something more serious. Apply the tips from this article to help you determine if it is normal memory loss, or something more.

OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE

What is Geocashing?FINALLY! A GOOD REASON TO GO OUTDOORS AGAIN!

Geocaching is a GPS (Global Positioning System) hide and seek game, where hiders hide containers (called ‘caches’ or ‘geocaches’) anywhere in the world, record the coordinates, and post a listing on a

website for hunters to seek. Hunters can use a handheld GPS unit to get close, but then must use their wits to find the cache and log the find. A typical cache can be any size and may be camouflaged, in order to make the hunt more challenging, and usually contains a logbook for the hunter to sign and usually some small trading items of little monetary value.

In May of 2000, the government announced their decision to stop the intentional degradation of GPS signal accuracy. In effect, this made civilian use of GPS systems much more accurate and many times more useful than it had been previously. On the day following this announcement the first geocache was placed by David Ulmer in Oregon. Ulmer’s idea was simple:

The hider would hide a container and then note the coordinates with his GPS unit. The seeker would locate the container using the given coordinates, make a note in the logbook, then trade items. It only took a few days for the cache to be found and reported online, and a new outdoor sport was formed.

The sport has grown considerably since its humble beginnings. At this writing there are well over ¼ million caches hidden around the world. Odds are that there is a cache close to you. Sometimes you can find your first cache after discovering that one is hidden very close to your home. Most people get hooked immediately, and often go out to find more or even hide some themselves.

Here’s a Quick Tutorial on How You Can Find a Geocache with Your Smartphone:

1. Go to the “App Store” (for iPhone) or “Play Store” (for Droid).

2. Search “Geocashing” and download either the free version, “Geocaching Intro” or $10 version, “Geocaching”. The free version’s interface is fairly difficult to use, so it’s recommended to download the $10, and it’s a one time fee. We will use the paid version with this tutorial. You must sign up with www.geocaching.com first and then connect your account with your app.

3. After you have downloaded the app and set up an account, open the app and tap “Find Nearby Geocaches”. This will find all of the closest caches to your current location (you must enable location services on your smartphone for this app).

4. Choose one of the caches from the list and tap it. There will be icons below the name of the cache that tell you how difficult the cache is to find, the terrain that you will have to encounter, the size of the cache and more.

5. Tap “Navigate to Geocache”. Your smartphone will then pull up a map that shows the path from you to the cache. Start walking/driving to the location and you will see the blue ping move along the path. You can change the map type to Street Map, Topographic Map, and Satellite Map on the top menu. Now get out there and find that cache! (The “rules” for what to do with a geocache once you find it can be found at www.geocaching.com/guide)

Finally! A good reason to go outdoors again!

FEATURE SPREAD

Technology seems to be rocking the entire world these days. It certainly has had an impact on fishing. Unfortunately, only a minority of fishermen realize and understand the capabilities of the new high tech fishing tools. When I was young, most fishing rods/poles were made of fiberglass. Along came graphite and carbon fiber and overnight the ability to feel the bite was enhanced dramatically. Yes, fiberglass poles are still made and for some applications they are superior to the graphite poles, but if you fish lures on the bottom, you will love the increased ability to feel the bite with a graphite or carbon fiber pole. There are so many different flavors of graphite and carbon fiber poles available now it is almost impossible to keep track. Luckily for the fishermen, they have started to label the poles with the specific type of lures they recommend to use with them. Like so many of the fishing tools, they are becoming more specialized. I can tell you from personal experience that there is good reason for specialized fishing rods. There is nothing like the correct tool for the job and special-ized fishing rods fish the baits they were designed for better than other rods.

Reel technology has also improved dramatically in the last few years. Unfortunately the price has increased accordingly. It is not all bad though. Most new bait casting reels have improved to the point where back lashes are next to non-existent. If you fish with bait casting reels you know what a bummer a backlash can be and if you have more than one a day it can take the fun out of fishing altogether. Spinning reels are doing a better job closing the bail, providing instant hook sets with the anti-reverse feature, providing for smooth, long distance casting by using more ball bearings and drag systems are using newer high tech materials such as ceramic discs. Other improvements include the use of stronger and lighter high tech materials and reels with faster retrieve speeds. Pike and muskie like fast retrieves. A fast retrieve reel is a must have when fishing for these big fish. If you are finding that you are fussing with and cussing at your reel, spend a little money and get a reel with the new technology features. You won’t be disappointed.

Shopping for fishing line is a lot more complicated than it used to be because of the introduction of new high tech fishing lines. Fluorocarbon is one of the latest to be introduced. It is transparent like monofilament, but it does not stretch and has a smaller diameter so it sinks faster. It is adver-tised to be totally transparent to fish. Monofilament has a larger diameter and does stretch. It does not sink as quickly and because it stretches it is more difficult to feel subtle strikes when fishing the bottom with semi-slack line. Braided line also does not stretch and also has a relatively small diameter. It often comes in colors that are not transparent so it also often floats so it can be used as a strike indicator. The newest braid “Nano-fil” has a really small diameter. Currently the highest breaking strength it is available in is 12lb. Because of its small diameter it has superior casting ability, it is not uncommon to improve your casting distance by at least 20 feet just by changing to this line. There are even lines that glow in the dark which help immensely when night fishing with a black light. Fishing line is becoming a specialized “tool” just like a rod or reel.

Fish finders have been improved more than any other fishing tool. The new finders have amazing capabilities and in the last 2-3 years the resolution of viewing screens has improved to allow easier interpretation of what you are seeing. It is absolutely amazing what you can see below the surface with a modern finder. The images are near to picture quality and for some models the resolution is considered to be similar to your high definition TV. The integration of GPS (Global Positioning System) side scanning sonar and standard sonar technology has made it possible to take the data your finder records and stores as you fish and with the help of a computer program, turn this into a 3 dimensional map of the bottom. Since sonar also can interpret the content of the bottom, bottom content can be shown on the map by painting hard rock areas one color and soft bottom areas a different color. If you have missed any of the new technology fishing tools introduced in the last couple of years, I highly recommend you take a closer look. I know the tools will improve your fishing.

Gem Fireplace and Stovebegan with a plan to provide local, on-demand fireplace and stove services and to exceed customer expectations.

Through customer education, and knowledge of the principals and practices of home heating, Gem Fireplace & Stove wants to be YOUR FIREPLACE GUY! We offer flat rate pricing so there’s no surprises, we evaluate your needs, and give you a price; That’s it! No watching the clock - No huge hourly bills. With just a few questions asked at the time you schedule your appointment, Greg Sobczak, Gem Fireplace & Stove’s owner, can usually have an educated idea of the problems and what is needed to resolve them, saving you time and money by bringing the right parts to resolve your issues the first time. If the parts need to be ordered, there is no additional charge to you, our customer, for the return visit needed to meet your heating needs. We have emergency service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide you and your family with the comfort of your fireplace or stove when you need it most. The outdoor elements don’t care if it’s the middle of the night, or a holiday, and neither do we. Our goal is keeping you warm!

At Gem Fireplace & Stove, we don’t sell equipment. We’ve decided to focus only on expert installation, maintenance, and repair services. From a basic wood burning stove or insert, to the most advanced power vented gas heating unit, we put our expertise to work for you.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Gem Fireplace & Stove exists to fill a need for professional fireplace and stove services in the Idaho panhandle. With over 5 years experience installing and repairing wood, pellet, and gas inserts, and free-standing stove, and with annual attendance at factory technical

training provided by some of the largest manufacturers in the US and Canada, Greg can help with any make or model fireplace, insert, or stove. We provide gas piping, ventilation, and heating service from your living room to your patio and yard.

All major manufacturers recommend that annual maintenance be performed for maximum operating efficiency as well as safety for you and your family. Today’s woodstoves

emit tremendously lower levels of pollutants and deliver more heat where you want it, into your home. The efficiency of today’s wood, pellet, and gas fireplaces, inserts, and stoves is dependent upon regular maintenance. Foregoing the recommended annual checks, leads to higher particulate emission which can be harmful to the environment , as well as lower efficiency, that means less heat delivered to your home, affecting the level of comfort provided and, possibly the biggest consequence, more costly fuel bills.

If you need gas piping, ventilation, or heating, make Gem Fireplace & Stove your first call. We are licensed, insured, and bonded. Call us today and let us be YOUR FIREPLACE GUY. We promise, we will exceed your expectations.

September 1st through the 30th, 2012 - Special order parts and installations not included. Must mention coupon code "SEPTEMBER10" when scheduling appointment. Does not apply to Annual Service Plan pricing or customers. Call or Email for more details.

In the United States, there are millions of Americans who use natural remedies as a way to seek treatment or relief from a minor medical issue. Since many are pleased with the results, ease of use, as well as affordability, many pet

owners wonder if natural remedies can be used on their pets. In most cases, you will see that they can.

When it comes to using natural remedies for pets, there are a number of important points that you will first want to take into consideration. One of those points is your source of information. If you decide to use a natural remedy that you got online, be sure to use your best judgment. Make sure that you are getting your information from a trusted website. In fact, the best ways to get information on natural remedies for pets is by buying printed resources, namely remedy books for pets, or by speaking with a vet.

Another point that you will want to take into consideration, before deciding to use a natural remedy on your pet, is the problem at hand. For example, if your dog is having difficulty breathing or if they are bleeding excessively from a deep wound, it may be best to seek professional help. With that being said, natural remedies are a safe, easy and affordable way to treat some pets with minor medical issues.

Although natural remedies can be used on many other pets, besides just cats and dogs, it is important to use your best judgment, as previously stated. Just because one home remedy works on one animal, like a dog, it does not mean that it will work or be safe for another animal, like a horse. If you use the internet to find information on natural remedies, be sure to find detailed and specific instructions. This simple step can help to ensure that your pet gets the best level of relief, safely, from the use of a natural remedy.

ACTIVITIES AND FUN

PAINT THE PORCHAnxious to finally get the porch painted, I urged by husband to allow the man that knocked on our door looking for handiwork to do the job. The man happily agreed to paint it for $50. We were thrilled at our good luck of getting our wide porch painted for a measly $50. Minutes later there was a knock at the door. “All done” he said. “Already?” we both said at once. “Yeah, and by the way, it’s a Lexus not a Porsche”.

ADOPTIONA woman has twins and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named “Ahmal.” The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him “Juan.” Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, “They’re twins! If you’ve seen Juan, you’ve seen Ahmal.”

JUST BEING PRACTICALA man wasn’t feeling well so he went to the doctor. After examining him the doctor took his wife aside, and said, “your husband has a very sensitive heart. I am afraid he’s not going to make it, unless you treat him like a king, which means you are at his every beck and call, 24 hours a day and that he doesn’t have to do anything himself. On the way home the husband asked with a note of concern “what did he say?” “Well”, the lady responded, “he said it looks like you probably won’t make it.”

TO THE DOCTORSo this old man goes to the doctor and the doctor says, “You’re testresults came back and I’m afraid I have some bad news. You have Cancer and you have Alzheimer’s”. The old man says, “That ain’t so bad, at least I don’t have Cancer!”
