Catholic Social Services & Parish Outreach “Strengthening our commitment to social justice and to those in need.”

Your gifts to the Diocesan Annual Appeal enables us to serve the poorest, the weakest and the most vulnerable among us through Catholic Social Services staff who feed the hungry, clothe the naked and provide shelter, counseling and assistance for those most in need. Many more individuals in parish communities receive assistance through parish-based Social Justice programs funded by the Appeal. Grants were awarded 33 parish programs including food and clothing pantries, monthly dinners for families in need and outreach to prison inmates. St. Brigid Parish Annual Appeal Parish Goal is $ 24,000.00, the same as last year.

BUS TRIP TO PHILADELPHIA TO SEE POPE FRANCIS We have room for a few more people. Please call the Rectory (570-553-2288) as soon as possible if you would like to attend. THE DATE IS NEXT SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27TH. Meals are extra and buses will only be able to stop far outside of Philadelphia for food before and/or after the Mass. Please bring a brown bag lunch, lots of water and drinks.

Cost per person is $ 50.00. We anticipate that the buses will be leaving Friendsville at 6:00AM. PLEASE CALL THE RECTORY THIS WEEK FOR THE EXACT TIME. The reason we are unable to confirm the time is that our arrival time in Philadelphia needs to be “approved” by GO GROUND, the organizational group in Philadelphia. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE CALL THE RECTORY. The information below has been provided by the Diocese of Scranton and is important information for our group to be aware of. General Information

The Papal Mass is a public event and all are welcome to attend – no ticket is needed.

Mass is scheduled for 4:00PM on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

We assume that pilgrims will pack a lunch for the bus trip. Food vendors will be available throughout the city, so travelers are on their own for an evening meal.

This event is being described as a “walking event” – all pilgrims need to be prepared to walk several miles, to stand for long periods, and to adjust to unpredictable circumstances in such a large crowd.

Health and Safety

The managed highway access, along with the extreme volume of bus traffic, will make it impossible to consider a meal stop along the way. Please plan for your needs.

Since this is an all day event, plan accordingly for medicines that will be needed during the day. Each traveler should have on their person emergency medical information including doctor contacts, insurance card, emergency contact person, and critical medical history.

The Secret Service has asked guests to allow for additional time for security screening at check points, as it is expected that lines may be long. Everything on your person is subject to search. Items Allowed during the Papal Visit (as of printing of the bulletin)

Small bags and backpacks will be allowed (smaller than 18”x13”x7”); they need not be clear.

Signs made of cardboard, poster board or cloth if they are no longer than 5’ x 3’x ¼”

CATHOLIC CHARISMATIC RENEWAL Pope Francis has been challenging the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) to promote more active engagement in ecumenical outreach. In response, the CCR of the Diocese of Scranton is sponsoring a day of formation in ecumenism. It will be held on Saturday, October 3, from 8:30AM to 6:00PM at the Holy Family Spiritual Renewal Center near Nanticoke, PA. Registration for the day is $25 and includes three meals (breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8:15). Overnight accommodations are available. This day will be an opportunity to pray, learn, discuss and fellowship, and will feature presentations by Dan Almeter, who is knowledgeable and experienced in many aspects of ecumenism. Please contact the CCR Office at 570-344-2214 if you’d like a flyer with registration form (registrations are being taken by mail only, and must be accompanied by payment). The CCR invites you to join them as they embrace our Holy Father’s desire to see progress made toward a greater visible unity in the Body of Christ. For more information see ccrscranton.org
