PREPARING FOR THE HIGH HOLIDAYS
So that we do not arrive at the spiritual climax of our Jewish year – the High Holidays - unprepared,
our tradition helps us attain an appropriate state of mind, beginning at least a month before during the Hebrew
month Elul.
We introduce various rituals such as reciting Psalm 27 twice a day, and sounding the shofar each
morning except Shabbat and the day before Rosh Hashanah. The following elucidations of these ancient rituals
might help enlighten your understanding of the Holidays, and assist you with your Holiday preparation.
In the sequence of sentences in Psalm 27, there are 5 words, then another 5; 6 then 6; 7 and 7; then the
Hebrew word “achat” meaning “one.” This corresponds with the saying in Judaism, “ma’alin bakodesh v’lo
moridin – in holiness we ascend not descend.” There are 5 Books of the Torah, 6 Books of the Mishna, 7 days
of the week, 10 Commandments, 12 Tribes and 14 is the Hebrew word “yad – God’s Hand” from Exodus
14:31 which states, “Israel saw the great Hand that God inflicted upon Egypt.” Finally comes “achat” - 1 -
God.
The sounds of the shofar are as follows:
1 sound – tekiah
3 broken sounds – shevarim
9 staccato sounds like wailing – teruah
1 long sound – tekiah gedolah.
We begin the year whole as in tekiah, but as the year passes, things happen and we tend to sin, as in
shevarim. Then we fall and cry out for help, as in teruah. Finally, we hope God answers our prayers so that we
are able to return stronger, as in tekiah gedolah.
On behalf of Jan, Mayron, Jenna, Chandler, Ari, Hayley, and Jackie, I extend to you our warmest
wishes for a shanah tovah, a wonderful new year 5774 with a long and strong tekiah gedolah.

A heartwarming story from our library…………………….
Sadly, with our move to the new building, our library collection had been neglected. Happily, Caren Zaft decided she needed a new challenge in her life to fill her days. And fill her days she has!!! First, she observed how books were strewn on shelves in varying degrees of disarray. Shelves were overflowing and not in any particular order. Many books on upper shelves could not easily be reached. Then, never having obtained any formal library training or experience, Caren became very adept by learning cataloguing the current high-tech way. Determined to rescue this valuable resource by the High Holidays, Caren and her committee took on the daunting task of reorganizing the books by categories suggested by the Association of Jewish Libraries. Their goals included removing duplicate books to free up shelf space, removing general interest books from the Youth Lounge and cataloguing all books on LibraryThing.com which any CBI member can access on line to search and review titles in our collection. Finally, it is hoped to establish a library committee to brainstorm and develop suggested policies and proce-dures for organization, distribution, purchases, disposal of discards and other matters as recommended by the Associa-tion of Jewish Libraries. The Board of Trustees is grateful for the initiative taken by Caren and her committee who have spent endless hours this past summer in the CBI library. Many thanks to Emmie Brody, Josh Brody, Alyssa Portnoy, Cathy Sperling and Steve Sperling. When you have a chance, stop by and check it out and check out a book!

The High Holidays are rapidly approaching. We are all looking forward to the coming year providing health and happiness to our loved ones. Your board of trustees want to wish you a Shana Tova and thank you for all your support this past year. The success of our great congregation is due to member involvement. B’nai Israel strives to provide our members with a variety of avenues to have positive Jewish experiences. This includes daily religious services, beautiful Shabbat and Holiday services, reli-gious school, celebration of life cycle events and a long list of social programming. We have an im-pressive tradition of volunteerism with many, many congregants offering their precious time to help support the functions and programming of our shul. In the next bulletin, we will list the committees that CBI has established as well as recognizing those that are involved. We will also identify which committees have openings and would ask you to consider offering some of your talent to these groups that will significantly benefit our shul. An exciting new effort is now underway to begin preparing for the 150
th Anniversary of Con-
gregation Bnai Israel. A large group is being organized to coordinate special programming to cele-brate this amazing milestone. Please watch for updates and more information about this. As we approach the holidays, we look forward with optimism to a wonderful year at CBI.
Shana Tova.
