By Ruby Venus News Editor Synchronizing the Shule Schedule page 3 SHUTTLE > Each year, Saint Xavier University’s Department of Public Safety in coalition with a committee comprised of representatives from Student Affairs and Student Government Association (SGA) works to refine the university’s shuttle service. At the beginning of the academic year, the Department of Public Safety released new shuttle schedules for students to use in both pamphlet form and signage. “It takes constant refinement, you know, student usage patterns change, resources change—how many buses we have, how many drivers,” said Vice President of Student Affairs John Pelrine. The biggest change made to the shuttle service is that the last run on every night of the week from the campus to the university apartments is at 10 p.m. “We made the times the shuttle runs during weekend consistent with the times they run during the week,” said Chief of Campus Police and Director of Public Safety Jack Touhy. Shuttles during the week usually make their last run at 10:15p.m. while weekend shuttle times usually vary depending on the day. While consistency was the main reason for the schedule changes, both Pelrine and Touhy explain that there was a more serious reason behind the push to switch from shuttle service to protective escorts. “The main thing is for consistency, the other thing, very honestly is our concern about facilitating students to the bars, which puts our people in a very difficult position,” said Pelrine. Pelrine continues explaining that there have been certain instances that the university would be picking up students who would be going to bars using the shuttle. The concern raised is that students are being put at risk Students return to campus from the Visual Arts Center using the shuttle. Photo: The Xavierite By Nicole Rosales Senior News Editor ACT Substutes TAP Score The ICTS Basic Skills Test is being waived for students who have scored a cumulative score of 22 or higher on the ACT. Students who have taken the SAT and earned a composite score of 1030 or above in math or reading can also opt out of the Basic Skills Test. Both tests require students to complete the writing portion. The Basic Skills Test, now being referred to as the Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP) in Illinois, was originally required by all education majors receiving teacher certification. Larry Sondler, the Director of Teacher Education and Certification Officer of the School of Education at Saint Xavier University, explained why the TAP can now be substituted with qualifying ACT scores. “The state of Illinois requires that students going into college must pass a basic test that covers general areas of reading, writing, mathematics, and language arts, like grammar,” Sondler stated. These areas are also covered by the TAP and the old ICTS Basic Skills Test, Sondler continued, “Illinois is one of the few states to create a state-specific TAP. It’s not transferable to other states. The higher-education community requested that the Illinois State Education Board (ILSBE) also allow a nationally-recognized test, being the ACT and/or SAT.” The new testing regulations are also intended to decrease the amount of money students spend on testing. “Students typically will have already taken [these tests] before going into college. They won’t have to take another, and therefore pay for another test if they have taken the ACT already and it works for them,” described Sondler. Students who were either unsatisfied with their score or did not meet the required score in one or more areas of the TAP are exempted from retaking the TAP if they have earned the a qualifying score on the ACT. Sondler explained, “Taking just one test is cheaper, so you really don’t have to take the TAP if you’ve already gotten an adequate score on the ACT. We simply recommend whichever test is best for the individual student. The tests are interchangeable in the school’s eyes.” Illinois requires that students using their ACT or SAT score in lieu of the TAP have complete the writing portion of either test. Students who have not completed a writing portion can either take the writing portion of either college entrance exam or complete the writing portion of the TAP to substitute it. “The school of Education and other universities are recommending this method to the state board. Education is expensive, and we are trying to suit the student’s needs when possible. In this case, both tests and writing portions assess the same skills, so we feel it is possible to suit the student here,” Sondler stated. Substituting writing portions from either test has only been temporarily approved under the State of Illinois’ emergency rules. Accorrding to Sondler, although the substitution is not yet solidified, education departments all around Illinois are working to earn its permanent approval. “We, along with other universities, are trying to get the weaknesses in regulation ironed out and then approved before they become permanent.” SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY XAVIERITE THE EYES AND EARS OF THE STUDENTS the Wednesday, September 19th, 2012 Vol. 82 No. 3 6:00 pm: Prepare lunches for local shelters in the diner. Brazilian police presence in Rio has increased in recent weeks in preparation for the 2014 World Cup. The increase of police presence is a strategy used by the state of Rio in order to better protect and serve the area after several circumstances had occurred in the area. From drug-trafficking to murder, the police force in the area made the decision to raid and control the poorer neighborhoods in the area after a police officer was shot and killed in the neighborhood of Rocinha as well as the discovery of six teenagers murdered in the area.~http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world- lat in-america-19607379

After a controversial and insulting film was made viral on YouTube on Sept. 11, attacks in protest of the United States have been made throughout the Middle East. The film, harboring anti-Islamic sentiments, caused great ruckus and rioting. The controversy behind the video brought up warped views about Christianity and Islam, causing Afghanistan to ban the use of YouTube. Enraged people throughout the world have voiced their opinions and have acted in defense of those targeted by this film. There have been some casualties strewn throughout nations where attacks on US embassies have taken place.~ http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/09/12/afghanistan-bans-youtube-after-anti-islam-video-leads-to-attacks_n_1876990.html

Miners who have gone on strike in South Africa have been hushed into submission by the police through the use of tear gas and rubber bullets. Men, women, and children were sent fleeing into shacks by South African police when they were on strike from the gold and platinum mines in Marikana, South Africa. This act to control strikers was the first attack since the shocking attack that happened on Aug. 16th where police killed 34 people in their attempt to stop the illegal strike. Miners were living under poor conditions and were not being paid fairly.~ http://news.yahoo.com/safrican-police-fire-gas-force-people-shacks-102453593.html

Where I May Lay

Take my bones to Gaza Port

And throw them with children who died

Leave nothing else of any sort

Do not leave the rest of me behind

Take my tongue to Palestine’s occupied streets

Let it speak the words of truth

Leave nothing else there of me

But the voice for the innocent youth

Take my eyes to Sirte, Libya

To be a witness of the injustice

Leave nothing else there of me

In a place so violent and torturous

Spread my hair within the sand

Let it fly with the Egyptian desert air

Leave nothing else there of me

Than the weightlessness of my hair

Leave my mind here in the States

Where it will help teach people a few things

It does not deserve anything else of me

For it did not hear out my dreams

Take my heart to the holy Mecca

Where you find Allah’s home on land

Let it walk and pray with the people of Medina

Let it rest in the richness of the sand

Check Up on the School of Nursing The nursing program is one of the most popular and well-known programs Saint Xavier has to offer. SXU has such a rich history of popular and rewarding programs and the nursing program fits that mold. Back in 1935 the Mercy Hospital in Chicago and Saint Xavier College teamed up to create the first inte-grated baccalaureate nursing program in the state of Illinois. Two Sister of Mercy institutions came to-gether to begin something that would last forever. Sister Camillus Byrne was Saint Xavier’s champion of general education at the time and she attended meetings of the curriculum committee and she wanted Saint Xavier to pair up with Mercy Hospital and cre-ate something special. Seven brave freshmen entered the new program that would earn them not only a degree, but a certificate in nursing as well. The beginning years were stressful and they were rough at times when it came to finances and how exactly to go about teaching the students. They needed to combine teaching with training and make sure that these students got the most out of their education. Sister Camillus devised a strategy that had students complete 65 academic courses, 744 hours of laboratory studies and 4,090 hours of nursing practice. The first students began to graduate in 1939 and there were four people that completed the program. Mary D. Brown, Genevieve C. Garvey, June E. Grode and Loretta E. Lang all complete the four-year program and had earned their degrees. During the beginning years of the program, some of the students began to disappear just as the world would need more nurses due to World War II. Scholarships were offered and federal funding was issued and those nurses would be nurses for the length of the war. Following the war, the world saw the demand for nurses and how important they were to society. Af-ter this, the nursing program began to see some development in the mid to late-50’s. In 1962, nursing students began to learn in the classroom setting of SXC and they would be transport-ed to Mercy Hospital for their training in the field. 1963 began the time where Saint Xavier offered a Master of Science degree and this was only one of two programs that offered a masters degree in the state of Illi-nois for nursing. In 1965 Saint Xavier was granted $185,000 to renovate the first two floors of the gym into two sixty-seat classrooms along with two smaller rooms, secretary space along with 15 offices for the faculty. The nursing program would continue to grow and the college began to offer new fields of study for nursing majors. The nursing program along with the Graham School of Management paired together to create a Master of Science and master of business administration in the early 1990’s. The nursing program has become one of the many programs with rich history offered at Saint Xavier. Nurses are needed all around the world and their dedication and commitment is something that Saint Xavier instills in these students as they enter the world.

History of the School ofNursing

-Greg Pilafas

Why did you choose to go into nursing? --I wanted to work with people, especially kids. I really like seeing how one thing can put a smile on someone’s face.

What is SNA? --It stands for Student Nurses Association, and it offers a chance for nursing students to come together to make a bigger difference than they could individually.

What kind of things do you do in SNA? --We do all sorts of volunteer work, hold organized events and link with other SNA members both state and nation wide. Among the things we plan to do this year is going to work at a homeless shelter, cooking at Ronald McDonald House Charity, helping with Saint Xavier’s Mercy Drive, holding two blood drives and hosting several guest speakers.

How can people get involved in SNA? --We hold monthly meetings every fourth Monday. Interested students can contact me at [email protected] or visit our Facebook page, SNA of SXU 2012-2013.

Check Up on the School of NursingWhat would you say to encourage students to become nursing majors? --I would hope that the first thing that would encourage them to become a nursing major is that they have a compassion for helping and caring for people. I ask this question in my class and some of the responses are: I had a family member that was a nurse or I was really impressed by the impact a nurse had on my life when I was sick one time.

How are the job prospects for graduating nursing majors? --We all know that the job market is tight. The jobs are there, I am not saying that they are not there, but I think nursing students need to take a look out beyond the city hospitals and into the rural hospi-tals.

What are the top-three things about being a nurse? --The first thing is having a sense of satisfaction that you made a difference in someone’s life. Being able to watch people get better as their healing occurs. You are there in all aspects of someone’s lifetime from when they are born up until the very bitter end. The nursing profession affords you so many oppor-tunities to do different things. You could start in a hospital and then go and work in the community, you could be a teacher. The profession itself has a lot to offer in terms of job opportunities.

Interview with Charlene Bermele, MSN,RN, Assistant Professor School of Nursing

My decision to go to school to become a nurse was influenced by a few things. The majority of my family works in healthcare, including both of my parents, so a large influence came from them. As a kid, family dinners always consisted of hospital lingo and phone calls from co-workers. Frequent trips to the hospital and doctors’ offices were nothing out of the ordinary. The biggest reason I decided on nursing was because I love the idea of interacting with all kinds of people, providing care for another person, and just being able to say at the end of every work day, “I made a difference in someone’s life.”

Mallorie Rosales, sophomore, nursing

Why did you choose to become a nurse?

My passion in life has always been to help and support others. Growing up, I would always take care of my sister while my parents were at work, and I used to nanny in high school. At first, I wanted to be a pediatrician. Then, in high school, I decided to be a nurse. I choose nursing because of the compassion and care they put into their patients every day. Nurses are the physical, emotional, and psychological support of the patient. I have decided to be an Advanced Nurse Practitioner specializing in Pediatrics.

Anne Marie Guilfoyle, junior, nursing

When I was a student at Mother McAuley, I volun-teered at Palos Community Hospital for four years. I was inspired by the compassion and care that the nurses showed to the patients. My mother has also just gradu-ated from nursing school. I want to follow in her foot-steps and make a difference in the lives I encounter. I am so proud to be a nursing student at SXU. I know this program will provide me with the training and education I need to be a successful nurse.

Tammy Rabadi, sophomore, nursing

I wanted to become a nurse because my brother was always in and out of the hospital due to medical problems. After being in that environment, I knew I wanted to help kids, like the nurses that helped my brother.

Lauren Murray, freshman, nursing
