SPIRIT BUILDING

April 20th Harvest Fest 2018

The Harvest Fest was a wonderful opportunity for Reddam families to come together and celebrate our school community. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather, not to mention many delicious food options, live music and plenty of wine, gin and beer.

Parents got to relax while children played games, supported their friends’ entrepreneurial efforts and of course cleaned out the sweet stall. A truly amazing evening thanks to Taryn Logan, Adele Paine and their hardworking team of parents.

July 21st Matric Dance

This year’s Matric students celebrated their last year at school at the opulent Gold Restaurant in Cape Town. The Matric Dance is an opportunity for our matric students and their families to reflect on and celebrate their time at Reddam, while creating some special memories. The P&F makes a financial contribution to the dance committee and some of its members assist the grade 12 parents to decorate the hall and host a pre-dinner drinks party at the school. Families of matric students attend the drinks party to watch the matrics walk the red carpet, take family photos and celebrate reaching this significant life milestone.

LEGACY

Reddam’s Recycling Project

The Green Portfolio are implementing a more holistic recycling system this term to include plastics, glass and tin.

Green Portfolio members raised money to purchase paper recycling bins for classrooms in a bake sale last term. The P&F supported this project by funding additional recycling bins.

Support Day2Day Day2Day has generously agreed to donate R200 to the recycling project each time a Reddam parent orders a meal box and uses the coupon code reddamgreen at checkout. In addition, Reddam parents also receive a R200 discount on their first box ordered when using this code.

Day2Day offers a range of recipes every week to choose from. They deliver the pre-measured fresh ingredients and recipe cards on a Monday so you can create easy, healthy and delicious dinners.

GIVING BACK

High Visibility Vests Project This program distributes high visibility vests to cyclists to make them more visible to motorists on the road. It was initiated in 2017 by a student who had started driving himself to school. He was horrified to have to avoid so many cyclists wearing dark clothes and without any lights on dusky mornings. In 2017 he distributed 50 high visibility jackets to cyclists on Reddam Avenue in an attempt to make the cyclists more visible. It made such a difference that in the second term of 2018, the P&F funded the purchase of a further 100 high visibility jackets which were distributed in May.

Support for Reddam and the community In the second term the P&F and parents:

✓ Continued to offer financial and other support to Reddam’s scholarship students. ✓ Donated money to Constantia Primary School to improve their jungle gym and play area. We hope to show before and after

picture in a future edition of this newsletter. ✓ Organised and funded netball scoreboards, which are currently being put to good use during the winter sports season. ✓ Provided ongoing support and meals for Reddam families and staff who are ill or require assistance.

WHAT IS THE P&F?

The P&F is a group of parent volunteers who actively support the school’s culture – hence the hashtag #reddampride. This includes supporting and uplifting community-based organizations, improving our school facilities and other pride-orientated activities.

Our biggest ongoing fundraising effort is the second-hand shop, which is run by P&F members with help from a team of fabulous parent volunteers. We also raise money through annual events such as Camp Out, Harvest Fest and Moms’ Night Out.

Funds raised support various charities in line with the school’s rallying call – “We Shall Give Back”. We also allocate fund to enhance existing school facilities, assist parents and staff on an ad hoc basis and encourage pride in our school.

We assist with the new parents/students induction programs and endeavour to involve all parents in the broader school community. We help out at various sporting, social, tours and cultural events. Parents on the P&F take responsibility for the various grade Facebook pages.

At our regular teacher-appreciation teas, we spoil the teachers with cake and treats to show them how much the parents value them.

Our members, with the help of other interested parents serve on various school committees such as the garden and library committees. We also run the Prep School’s lost property service.

We engage with the broader community of old boys and girls and friends of the school, and also the business community when appropriate.
