REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS FOR
THE 24th SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIME
As a parent, it is normal that our goal for our children is to raise
them in a manner through which they will know how to live a “good
life”. Parents want their children to lead a good life which entails
teaching them how to accept both good and bad circumstances. It
is imperative that the child knows how to accept offenses by
others in a manner that reveals their maturity and empathy as well
as their propensity for forgiveness. Today’s Liturgy of the Word
addresses this human need and reveals the Christian attitude
towards it. It is this attitude that defines the individual’s relation
with God and man as well. It is this same quality that will ensure
their eternal destiny which is of greater importance. It is
forgiveness and mercy embodied in humans that will bring them
the greatest happiness and fulfillment and reveal the righteous
person.
In our reading from Sirach, forgiveness and mercy are the two
virtues needed to elicit righteousness. Sirach identifies wrath and
anger as qualities that destroy the human. Clinging to these
qualities, the human being is consumed by himself and is……..
WEEKLY PRAYER & RESOLUTION
Listen now as Jesus comes before you and says, “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone.”
As you hear those words, is there someone you believe has “sinned against you”?
Have you done as Jesus commands by telling this person how you feel, or are you harboring secret ill will?
How do you respond to Jesus?

REFLECTIONS on the READINGS for THIS SUNDAY , CONT INUED
Deacon Rob
…...neglectful of others. In this state, the human heart and
soul has no room for God and soon discovers that God
Himself is absent, allowing the injustice to continue.
Sirach reveals that only forgiveness will foster happiness.
The forgiving person opens his
being to love and, as a result,
God fills that space. Once
filled, justice emerges and
peace is possible. Sirach
emphasizes that people who
forgive each other will receive
forgiveness from God for their
own sins. This exchange of
forgiveness and mercy is the
foundation of Divine Love,
making it mandatory in fulfilling
God’s covenant. Only
forgiveness yields justification
and justification is the
foundation for a good life.
In St. Paul’s letter to the Romans, Paul preaches that a
good life is found only in Christ, the embodiment of
righteousness and justification through mercy and
forgiveness. It is Paul’s assertion that living a Christian life
entails following the example of the Lord. The apostle to
the Gentiles reasons that Christians live and die for
Christ. Through baptism, the Christian is reborn and joins
in the Mystical Body of Christ. No longer thinking about
himself / herself, Christians are bound to love and
forgiveness just as Jesus exemplified. The agape love
Christ showed was the “perfect” life and made Him king of
all – living and dead. Even though Jesus suffered, his
suffering was an act of love that drew him closer to the
Father and united him with his Bride – mankind.
In the Gospel of Matthew, Peter’s question to the Lord
about forgiving an individual seven times evokes an
astounding response from Christ. The number seven has
the connotation of completeness and perfection. Yet,
Jesus’ response exceeds that and amazes Peter. The
Lord goes beyond that number when he states, “…
seventy times seven.” By using this figure, Jesus is saying
that forgiveness knows no bounds. To emphasize the
point, Christ relates a parable where a servant owes a
master a great sum and cannot pay. Begging forgiveness,
the servant pleads his case and the master forgives him
the debt. Shortly, this same servant
encounters another who owes him.
When the pardoned servant
demands money from the other, no
mercy or forgiveness is shown
despite the pleas. When this
injustice gets back to the master,
the formerly pardoned servant is
presented before the master for
judgement. The master is angered
and issues a decree that punishes
the servant and demands
repayment. At this point, Jesus
explains that our Heavenly Father
will treat us in the same way we
treat others. Mercy is available from God but only if we
are willing to give it in return to others.
The key to happiness, and therefore to God, is
forgiveness. God, who is Love, wants to forgive us;
however, His forgiveness is dependent upon our
forgiveness of each other as well as ourselves. For the
“good life” mankind needs to instill within their young a
propensity for forgiveness. Through agape, selfless love
which entails forgiveness and giving, the human being is
“Divinized” in Christ. This elevation of our status requires
us to imitate the Divine. Our eternal destiny is contingent
upon our current growth and fostering of the Divine Image
found in Christ. Therefore, we live not for ourselves but for
Him who was sent to re-establish order and peace in our
world, today. As Christ revealed to St. Faustina, “Behold
the treasures of grace that flow down upon souls, but not
all know how to take advantage of My Generosity.” It is up
to us to reveal the mercy and forgiveness He offers
through our words and actions, today.

SAINT JANUARIUS September 19 Januarius was born in Italy and was bishop of Benevento
during the time of Emperor Diocletion’s persecution of
Christians. As Bishop, Januarius
went to visit two deacons and
two laymen in prison. He was
then imprisoned along with his
deacon and lector. They were
thrown to the wild beasts, but
when the animals did not attack
them, they were beheaded. What
is believed to be Januarius'
blood is kept in Naples, as a
relic. It liquifies and bubbles
when exposed in the cathedral. Scientists have not been
able to explain this miracle to date. Saint Januarius lived
and died around 305 A.D.

UPDATE ON HOLY COMMUNION TO THE HOMEBOUND
Until this COVID19 pandemic situation improves to be safer
and less at risk, we, as Eucharistic Ministers, will not be bringing Communion to the Homebound. However, if you have a family member who is a parishioner and is unable to come to Church due to a disability (except a COVID19 infected person) and you are a practicing Catholic, you may request to bring Communion to that Homebound parishioner. There are specific guidelines to follow and a pyx will be provided. Interested parishioners should contact Rick and Chris Block at 503-623-2864.
TODAY’S MISSAL and the 2020 MUSIC ISSUE books
are now available for parishioners to
take and keep. Please pick up your
copies in the vestibule and keep them
with you! DO NOT leave them in the
pews, please. With these available for
your personal use, you can be a more
active participant in the Mass, whether
at Mass or at home.
