Welcome to St. Bernard’s Parish
Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 11

, 2016
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Expressing our love of Jesus Christ through the Eucharist, enlightened by the Holy
Spirit, and by living the will of the Father, we gather as one family, rich in culture and
tradition, willing to share our gifts with all, and working together as we journey to the
kingdom of God.

WHY DO WE DO THAT?
Catholic Traditions Explained
Question: Every week in our bulletin I see a Mass on Sunday
for the people of the parish. Is it there to fill in an intention, or is
someone requesting it every week?
The Pastor of a Parish is charged with the well-being of the community. There are
many aspects of this task, including the physical, spiritual, and social concerns of
maintaining and building a community of faith. Each week, by church law, the Pastor
offers Mass on Sunday for the people of the parish. It is a tangible and practical way
that the Pastor prays for those entrusted to his care. No one requests it, nor is it of-
fered only when there is an open intention. In fact, the pastor may not accept a stipend
for it. The spiritual needs of the people are the primary concern of the Pastor. His
prayer for them is the first way he cares for them. You may also see Mass Intentions
for those listed in a memorial, or deceased members of the Parish, or past members of
a group or organization. These too are ways the Pastor remembers the needs of all the
members of his Parish, asking the Lord to bless and protect them, bringing us all to
eternal life.
Eucharistic Adoration
(Adoration Chapel located in Convent behind Church)

rist through whom all things have been brought to peace and recon-
ciled with Almighty God.”

LIVE THE LITURGY
The challenge we face today is to love as God loves.
Often, our way of loving differs greatly from God's way.
Our way of loving can be burdened with demands and
expectations. When we love, we sometimes seek love in
return. Sometimes we allow our weaknesses and needs to
color how we love or taint love with conditions. Our goal
is to love unconditionally with boundless mercy.

YEAR OF MERCY
Practical Suggestions for practicing
Corporal & Spiritual Works of Mercy
• Be mindful of your behavior online. Is
that post designed to improve your im-
age… and leave others feeling bad?
Are you hammering people in order to serve your anger
and humiliate others?
• Be generous enough to allow someone to help you;
people need to feel needed.
• Pare down possessions: share your things with the
needy.

Our Parish Community
Prayer for New Parishioners
O merciful God, grant we pray that all things belonging to Your Spirit may live and
grow in the hearts and minds of all who serve You, especially these Your servants whom we
receive today into the nurture of this branch of Your Church. May they receive the fullness
of Your grace and always remain among Your faithful and beloved people. Amen.
Our Parish is blessed and enriched by the presence of new parishioners.
Our prayer is that they will find, in this place, a home where they can bring
their sorrows and joys, their pain and triumphs.

Marriage Takes Three
I once thought marriage took just two to make a go. But now I am convinced It takes
the Lord also. And not one marriage fails where Christ is asked to enter.
As lovers come together with Jesus at the center. But marriage seldom thrives and
homes are incomplete till He is welcomed there to help avert defeat. In homes where
God is first. It’s obvious to see those unions really work, For marriage still takes three.

Volunteers Needed
The success of the Faith Formation of our children is due, in part, to the generosity and dedica-
tion of volunteers. These volunteers, who become Catechists, classroom aides or program aides,
share their faith and love for Jesus while teaching the youth of our parish as they grow in in the
Faith.
We are in urgent need of volunteers at this time. We will provide you with the training, tools,
and support to assist you in this Ministry. If the Lord is calling you to be part of this ministry, please contact Sophia Mar-
tinez or Elvira Orozco at the Faith Formation Office @ 209-835-4560.

An Autumn Message
About Child Protection
Autumn means back to school for children and back to
work for those who have been on vacation. Amidst the hustle
and bustle of this season, let us all keep sight of the im-
portance of keeping our children and young people safe from
danger. Training requirements to safeguard children have
been established in parishes throughout the Diocese of Stock-
ton. These training requirements help ensure that all children
and youth experience a safe environment in all parish activi-
ties and events.
The Diocese of Stockton mandates that all people who
work with children and youth in our parishes and schools must
undergo child abuse prevention training through the guidelines
established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bish-
ops. This training includes being fingerprinted and back-
ground checked and completing an on-line training course
entitled “Shield the Vulnerable”. If you are planning on helping
or assisting in your child’s school, you are required to com-
plete this training.
For training information, contact your local parish/school
Safe Environment Coordinator.
For particular help and questions, you may call: Linda Dil-
len, Manager of Benefits & Safe Environment for the Dio-
cese of Stockton at 209-466-0636.

capacitación por internet titulado: “Shield the Vulnera-
