Many thanks to Mr. Yehoshua Asher Mantel and his able crew of assistants for the set-up and clean-up each week. THE THREE WEEKS The Kehilla, and Klal Yisroel, once again unfortunately experienced the days of 17 Tamuz through 9 Av (both Nidche, this year) as the Bein HaMetzorim, as opposed to the Moadim Tovim which we await. The somber mood of the Three Weeks was perceptible in the davening, through the melodies of Birkas Yerushalayim, the ends of Brochos, HaShem Elokei Yisroel, Shomer Yisroel, and Keil Erech Apayim, and, on Shabbossos, in Lecho Dodi. Rav Mantel and Rav Posen devoted their daily Divrei Halacha to timely laws as well. This year’s video in the Yizkereim series was shown on Sunday, the 18th of Tamuz, the Taanis Nidche. Mr. Avram Gutmann introduced the video, which focused on an extremely inspirational topic, the She’eiris HaPleita and their efforts in rebuilding Yahadus, immediately after the War. On Monday, August 1/26 Tamuz, Rav Mantel spoke on Inyonei Tisha B’Av. The Rav, quoting the Gemara (Menachos 53:), explained how Yedidus (deep love and caring) among Klal Yisroel is inseparable from the Yedidus between us and HaKodosh Boruch Hu. This Yedidus is the essential prerequisite for, and nature of, the Beis HaMikdosh. Without it, the Beis HaMikdosh is by definition Choruv, unable to stand, and it is this very lack of Yedidus from which we suffer today in Galus. On Shabbos Chazon, the Sisterhood’s speaker was Rabbi Elchonon Stern, who also spoke about Inyonei Tisha B’Av. TISHA B’AV With an oppressive heatwave enveloping the NYC area over Shabbos Chazon (Erev the Taanis), and Tisha B’Av Nidche, davening remained in 90 Bennett until Sunday afternoon. The excessive heat also resulted in a power outage over Leil Shabbos for those in some buildings on Bennett Avenue. After veHu Rachum and Borachu on Motzo’ei Shabbos, Moller Hall was darkened, the low benches were brought out, and Chazon Ezra Lasdun led the somber Maariv. Mr. Michael Gutmann leined Megillas Eicha, and Rav Posen recited the Kinoh composed by Rav Schwab. Written at Rav Breuer’s request, this Kinoh commemorates the Kedoshim of the Churban HoAcharon, the Holocaust, and has not only become a part of our Kehilla’s Tisha B’Av service, but that of many other communities as well. Chazon Lasdun led the davening of Tisha B’Av morning, and Chazon Ezra Hes joined him in the saying of the first seventeen of the morning Kinos. In the afternoon, our Kehilla hosted the local presentation of the annual Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation video. Our thanks go to Rabbi and Mrs. Raphael and Julia Weis who were, as usual, behind this effort. A video for children was also screened in Moller Hall, earlier in the afternoon; we thank Mr. and Mrs. Yosef Levi for the arrangements. CHANGES IN TIMES OF DAVENING Please note that the times for Mincha-Maariv for the period Sunday, September 4 through Thursday September 29 are being adjusted as follows:

Mincha/Maariv 2nd Maariv Sun Sept 4-Thu Sept 8 7:10 8:05 Sun Sept 11-Thu Sept 15 7:00 8:00 Sun Sept 18 -Thu Sept 22 6:45 8:00 Sun Sept 25-Thu Sept 29 6:35 8:00 SENIOR SOCIAL CLUBS TRIP On a blisteringly hot July Sunday, close to 50 members and friends of the Senior Social Clubs of KAJ visited Sagamore Hill, the “Summer White House” of President Theodore Roosevelt. Located in Oyster Bay, the 23-room home was built in 1885, shortly after Roosevelt’s mother and first wife passed away. Roosevelt and his second wife, Edith, lived in Sagamore Hill (named after the chief of an Indian tribe) until their passing – in 1919 and 1948, respectively. The group also visited the Theodore Roosevelt Museum, located on the same 83-acre property, in the former home of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. Lechayim’s delicious boxed lunch for the group included tuna sandwiches, potato chips, some much-needed water, and other goodies and was enjoyably eaten under a tent, shading the group from the sun. Following lunch, the itinerary called for a stroll around Oyster Bay Village, but on this scorching Sunday the place looked like a ghost town with no shops open, so the trip was cut short.

All in all, the outing was a success with the group learning much about our 26th president. Many thanks to Dov, the Monsey Tours’ driver, and to the Senior Social Club’s director Mrs. Molly Resnick for her untiring efforts. SUMMER AT MORIAH SENIOR CENTER It has been a fun and informative summer at Moriah! We not only continued and expanded our existing music program, but we had several cooking/nutrition demos and aromatherapy sessions as well. Our beading class extended into the realm of wire wrapping and made the most unique, one-of-a-kind wire wrapped silver bracelets. Our craft class decorated lovely, beachy photo frames with sand and seashells, to complement our summer mood. Our red, white and blue July 4th party was a rousing, patriotic success.

Moriah offers so much more than just delicious food, warm company and fun activities. We have a vibrant Wellness Program featuring a full range of exercises (Zumba, Tai Chi, Pilates, Fit ‘n Fun, Walking Club and Yoga), and health management activities (Feldenkrais, Therapeutic Massage and Blood Pressure Screenings). We hired a new Tai Chi instructor with very impressive credentials, who quickly established a great rapport with our members. The class size exploded as a result! Our annual summer Health Fair had a record attendance and featured not only valuable information and fun giveaways, but also free blood pressure, glaucoma and dental screenings by qualified professionals. We also ran an eight week evidence-based fall prevention series called A Matter of Balance. (Evidence based programming is programming that has been scientifically proven to work)} Interest was so great that we had to start a waiting list for a second series in the fall. In the first of what we hope will be a series of educational alternative medicine workshops, Ari Rieser, from Elite Physical Therapy, presented a lecture titled Acupuncture After 60 to a full house.

Stay tuned for our upcoming events, including a Labor Day Concert by Diverse Concert Artists, featuring both classical and popular music, and our annual Free Flu Shot Clinic on September 27th. AMUD HA’AVODA The Kehilla has established the Amud Ha’Avoda program which enables individuals to sponsor – be the Amud Ha’Avodah – for the Kehilla’s expenses for specific days. This program provides a tangible means of joining in the מי שמיחדים בתי כנסיות לתפלה who are included in the misheberach said on most Shabbosos. We have been very gratified by the response of members using this opportunity to commemorate yahrzeits and other occasions, as well as generally supporting the Kehilla.

SHAATNEZ Shaatnez (wool and linen) is often found in garments bought even from a reliable Jewish clothing store. Therefore, it is forbidden to wear any man’s, woman’s or child’s garment that contains wool or linen until it has been determined not to contain shaatnez. To determine whether your garment is shaatnez-free, garments may be dropped off at the Kehilla office, 714 W. 186th Street at the following times:

Weekdays 9:30 – 4:30 Fridays 9:30 – 12:00

If you are not available at these times, please make an appointment by emailing [email protected]. If you do not have email, call 917-359-2873 and leave a message.

Rabbi Kalman Strauss will test the garments on our premises.

Please note that it is important to leave on tags with information where garment is manufactured and list of materials contained in it.
