RECENT EVENTS

Our Kehilla joins K’lal Yisroel in expressing our pain and grief over the recent events in Eretz Yisroel,

including the Lag BeOmer tragedy at Meiron, and the rocket barrage from Gaza. In Shul, מזמור פ''ג was

recited aloud after Shacharis, and מזמור ק''ל, followed by Acheinu, was said following Mincha. It is our

true hope and prayer that all Tzoros will indeed cease השתא בעגלא ובזמן קריב, and that the individuals and

families effected may experience Yeshuos and Nechomos.

SHOVUOS 5781

While a year ago the feasibility of celebrating Shovuos back in Shul was uncertain until days before Yom

Tov (and was, under strict capacity limits, an incomplete return), the Shul’s floral decorations were on a

much more modest scale. This year, ב''ה, our Beis Knesses saw a full complement of Mispallelim, the

return of the Choir after more than a year’s absence, and was, once again, fully resplendent in flowers

and greenery, as befitting Zman Mattan Toroseinu. Our many thanks go to Mr. Avram Gutmann and his

assistants in these efforts (some pictured below), Messrs. David Braham, Michael Gutmann, Ary Levi,

Meir Levi, Shua Levi, Yakov Levi, Yoseph Levi and Victor Sussman. Our thanks as well to Mr. Shuie

Pinter for all the pre-Yom Tov preparations. A list of donors appears in this issue.

Mr. Yoseph Levi davened the first day of Shovuos, and Chazon Ezra Lasdun davened the second day.

Messrs. Kenny Sommer (Shacharis) and Dovid Herbsman (Musof) led the Hashkomo (4:35 AM) Minyan

on the first day; Mr. Avram Gutmann davened for the Hashkomo (6:00 AM) Minyan of the second day.

Chazon Lasdun leined and read the Akdomus on the first day; it was Mr. Herbsman who did the honors

at the Hashkomo Minyan. Rabbi Dr. Johny Hellmann leined the second day, and Mr. Michael Gutmann

leined for Hashkomo. Many thanks are due Chazon Lasdun and the other Baalei Tefilla who, along with

the Choir, ensured the dignity and beauty of the Tefillos.

The annual Shovuos-night learning took place in both the Beis Medrash and 90 Bennett Avenue. Rav

Mantel spoke to the assembled in Moller Hall at 12:30 AM.

Rav Mantel gave the Yom Tov lecture on the first day of Shovuos, after Mincha. The Rav discussed the

idea Tzibur and Yochid, corresponding, respectively, to the Guf and Nishmas HaTorah.

On the second afternoon of Yom Tov a Matnas Yad reception was held at the home of Rav and

Rebbetzin Mantel, allowing a grateful Kehilla to thank the Rav for the Brochos bestowed during Matnas

Yad, as well as to fulfill the dictum of Chazal, to visit one’s Rav on Yom Tov.

After Mincho, a Neilas HaChag was held in Moller Hall, at which both Rav Mantel and Rabbi Noson

Lowenthal spoke.

DR. RAPHAEL MOLLER ל''ז

The 41st Yahrzeit of our Kehilla’s renowned Rosh HaKohol, Moreinu Dr. Raphael Moller, was on the 8th

of Sivon, Isru Chag Shovuos, this year Wednesday, May 19th. Dr. Moller’s decades-long tenure as the

Rosh HaKohol par excellence of our Kehilla was unique, and encompassed all facets of the Kehilla’s life

and endeavors. As President, a Baal Tefilla of the Yomim Noroim, as well as expert medical doctor, Dr.

Moller’s Tzidkus and sterling character were well known beyond the confines of Washington Heights.

It is our fervent hope that the innumerable Zechuyos Dr. Moller accrued through his decades of

devoted service and leadership of the Kehilla, continue to redound to his family, and the Kehilla he

loved.

DR. ERICH ERLBACH ל''ז

Shabbos, the 11th of Iyar marked the sixth Yahrzeit of our unforgettable Rosh HaKohol, Dr. Erich

Erlbach. A member of the Board of Trustees since 1970 until the terrible injury which ultimately cost

him his life, and President of the Kehilla from 1986 to 2008, Dr. Erlbach—pictured below with Rav

Gelley זצ''ל— was the exemplar of one who is Oseik BeTzorchei Tzibur BeEmuno. His work for the

Kehilla was both far-ranging and foresighted, and was encompassed by extraordinary integrity, truth,

devotion, and love.

Besides for chairing the Physics Department in City College, where he taught for decades, making a

continual Kidush HaShem, Dr. Erlbach was also an accomplished Talmid Chochom who was a Magid

shiur for Daf Yomi for many years.

May Dr. Erlbach’s legacy—from the manifold projects in which he was involved, to the immeasurable

Zechuyos he surely accrued—continue to bring merit to his family and for the Kehilla whose welfare

was his prime concern.

SHINING SPOTLIGHTS

By Mrs. Judy Fulda

SPOTLIGHT ON: Mr. Yitzchak Dyckman—WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE…A KAJ Caterer?

If you have ever eaten at the YRSRH Ladies Auxiliary Brunch, Sisterhood functions, some of the Melave Malkas

in the neighborhood, the KAJ catered Sukkah or at many of the Kiddushim, Bris or Bar Mitzvah Seudos, or vorts

in the Kehilla catered by Lechayim Caterers then you are familiar with the delicious fare created by Yitzchak

Dyckman, the owner and proprietor of the business. Mr. Dyckman is often assisted by his devoted wife, Yaffi,

and sometimes their children help, as well. Mr. Dyckman is also the person in charge of the kosher appetizing

department at Key Food, responsible for the wide array of take-out fare available to our community. A native of

Washington Heights (his mother, Mrs. Bella Dyckman lives on Fairview Avenue), the Dyckmans currently live in

Kew Gardens Hills. Besides being an incredible chef and caterer, Mr. Dyckman is known for his pleasant

demeanor, respect for everyone, and the honesty and fairness with which he conducts his business dealings. The

Spotlight is grateful to him for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions.

KAJN: How long have you been a caterer/ how long under KAJ?

YD: I have been a caterer for 30 years, and under KAJ for about 25 years.

KAJN: What got you interested in this profession?

YD: I enjoy cooking and I had the opportunity to work in a takeout store as a teenager and never left

the business.

KAJN: What is a typical day like?

YD: It's really hard to describe one day, since every day is different. Every day varies in this business.

Towards the beginning of the week, some of the work entails placing orders and picking up produce and

perishables for later in the week. Mid to end of week is the food preparation and deliveries. Of course,

since catering jobs can take place seven days of week, the setting up and cleaning up for a job can begin

as early as 6-7 AM for a Bris or such, and end at 11 PM-12 midnight for a Shabbos meal or other evening

event. Additional tasks can be accepting orders, emailing customers and billing, like in many other

businesses.

KAJN: How is cooking during the year different than cooking for Pesach?

YD: Initially setting up a Pesach kitchen is a huge undertaking and the ingredients that you use are

somewhat limited.

KAJN: Does COVID-19 have any impact on what you do?

Page 5: KAJ NEWSLETTER - ShulCloud

Vol. 51, No. 7 KAJ NEWSLETTER 5

YD: When COVID-19 first hit most people did not make any parties or were hosting a very small

number of guests if they were. Things are beginning to pick up now as more and more people are being

vaccinated and cases are decreasing. During COVID, I have also catered more events in tents than ever

before!

KAJN: What types of foods are popular now? How do you keep up with current trends?

YD: I am a mostly traditional kind of caterer and I prepare foods that my clients are interested in. I get

ideas from looking at other events and from what I see in catering magazines.

KAJN: Do you have any interesting anecdotes you can share?

YD: I once had a customer who told me that his doctor recommended that he eat liver for health

reasons and suggested that I advertise my liver as recommended by doctors!

Also, once when I was catering an Aufruf meal on a Shabbos in a Shul, the lights went out during the

meal and the guests just kept on and singing and eating in the dark!

SENIOR SOCIAL CLUBS

On Sunday, April 25th/13 Iyar, the Senior Social Clubs hosted a fascinating and informative Zoom lecture.

Given by Mr. Pinchas Katzenstein, and entitled ―Viewing the Special Mitzvah of Bris Milah Through the

Eyes of Rabbi Yitzchok Katzenstein‖ the lecture was enjoyed by KAJ members and friends age eight days

old and above.

presentation is based on Henry M. Quinlan, Esq.’s 30-year involvement with the former Soviet Union
