A Note from the Principal

Dear Sacred Heart School Families,

Wow, the first day of school was great! The excitement and anticipation of a great 2018 - 2019 school year was evident throughout the building. As I toured the school, I enjoyed seeing our Sacred Heart Family again! We have 52 new students at Sacred Heart School this year. We are always happy to welcome new students, so spread the good news to friends and neighbors about the great things happening at Sacred Heart School. Some of our classes are full, but there are some openings in some grades.

Our school theme is, “Going Above and Beyond!” We set a high academic standards and have full accreditation from AdvancED Accreditation and the State of Indiana. Our ISTEP+ test scores from last year were given recently to individual students’ parents, and our school continues to do well on all our assessments. Our goal this year is to continue our excellence and meet even higher expectations by starting with each student at his or her ability level, and “Go Above and Beyond!”

We are strengthening our STREAM Program to help prepare our students for their future. Mrs. Andrea Komorowski, our new STREAM Coordinator, along with our teachers have completed a computer coding training this summer and are signed up for another STREAM professional development training on Wednesday, October 24th. The training is titled “Engineering is Elementary”. The program is presented by certified instructor Dr. Matt Klosser, University of Notre Dame Professor and brother to our STREAM coordinator Mrs. Andrea Komorowski.

Great News! We have utilized the Next Big Event Funds and have purchased 80 ipads and cases, 30 headphones, and 30 keyboards. We also have purchased a license through Cisco Meracki which will help provide a stable and a secure network within our school among all ipads.

Every day I give thanks for the many blessings here at Sacred Heart. Please continue to pray for our Sacred Heart Family as we “strive for perfection”.

Mrs. Komorowski, along with the teachers, has new, innovative plans in STREAM for the school year. Look for Mrs. Komorowski’s letters throughout the year called Swimming Up STREAM for updates on our progress. It takes the effort and hard work of many people to make SHS such a great success. We couldn’t be all that we are without our awesome volunteers! We welcome and depend on our parents and grandparents to help with various activities and events with our students. Please see our list of extended day STREAM activities/clubs later in this letter.

In an effort to do our best to keep our students safe, our Diocese has put into place a "Safe Environment Program" for all of our volunteers.

Please contact the office if you are interested in helping so you can complete the required training before you come in to volunteer. You must contact the office at

least 1 week prior to any volunteering.

Thank you!

If you come in and I’m not available at that time, I will make an appointment with you.

Drop  o f f  and  P ickup  Procedures  For  the  sa fe ty  o f   everyone ,   it  is  important  that  each  person  follows    the  same  drop  off  &  pick  up  procedures.  Please  get  in  the  pick  up  line,

in  your  car,  to  pick  up  your  child(ren).      We  ask  that  you  do  not  walk  up  to  the  door  to  pick  up  your  child(ren)  unless  it  is  absolutely  necessary.    For  security  as  well  as  a  safety  measure  for  staff  to  know  with  whom  children  are  leaving,  we  are  asking  for  your  cooperation.  Please,  under  no

circumstances  should  you  pull  into  the  handicap  parking  spaces  to  drop  off  or  pick  up  your  child(ren).  Please  use  the  parking  lot  across  the  street

Please  know  that  you  are  always  welcome  in  the  school  and  encouraged  to  come  in  at  any  other  time.

THE  ‘FAST  PASS’  IN  THE  PICK-‐UP  LINE!

The  Alderfer  &  Silcox  families  have  "Fast  Passes"  this  year  which  were  won  last  Spring  at

the  SHS  "Next  Big  Event"  fundraiser.    These  "Fast  Passes"  allow  the  owner  to  skip  and

move  to  the  front  of  the  car  pick-‐up  line.    Please  do  not  think  this  family  is  cutting  the

line.    If  you  are  interested  in  this  fast  pass  for  the  2018-‐2019  school  year,  it  may  be  an

auction  item  at  our  "Next  Big  Event"  fundraiser  in  February  2019.

NWEA Assessments

Fall NWEA Assessments will begin for Grades K - 6 on Monday, September 10th through Friday, September 21st. Students will be assessed again in January and May. This will allow the school to not only monitor progress, but to help drive instruction based on students’ strengths and weaknesses. The tests are over reading, language arts and math skills.

A lot of questions can be answered by going to the NWEA web site at: http://www.nwea.org

ILEARN Testing Dates Grades 3-6

The State of Indiana Department of Education will be utilizing the new ILEARN assessment in the place of ISTEP

for Grades 3 and up.

The test dates are Monday, April 22 – May 23.

DIBELS

This year we will administer DIBELS to grades K and 1.

IREAD3 IREAD3 will be administered to 3rd graders the week of March 18th.

All of the above assessments will give your child’s teacher a very clear picture of your child’s abilities and provide a tremendous plan to guide instruction to meet each and every child’s academic program. As you may know, education today is very prescriptive which will result in tailoring instruction to a child’s needs. We are planning to continue to make great strides for student achievement. Please make every effort to have your child(ren) in school

and try not to schedule appointments during the above assessment times. Thank you.
