Slow Down!

SECURITY UPDATE by Steve Anton

Things our deputies want you to know

Our 5 deputies know a lot about preventing crime, and they see many ways to improve our safety and quality of life. Let’s follow their advice.

Traffic:

The red signs stay ‘Stop.’ They don’t say ‘Yield’ or ‘Slow’. Although the speed limit is 20 or 30 mph, slow down on streets with

cars parked along the curb — kids unpredictably can dart out into your path. Obey the speed limits or go even slower.

Pay attention to the No Parking signs on streets near the schools. If there is an emergency, particularly during carpool hours, emergency equipment cannot get through to save lives or property.

Do not block a public or private driveway. Stay at least 15 feet away from a fire hydrant, 20 feet away from a crosswalk at an intersection, and 30 feet from any stop sign, yield sign, flashing beacon or other signal. And the boundaries are even wider near the fire station.

Observe the speed limits — children are oblivious to traffic.

Home Security:

Many burglaries occur at homes that have good security systems which were left unarmed. If you have an alarm, use it every time.

Have your alarm company notify the Constable’s office for a quicker response to a break-in.

Dogs are a big deterrent, especially when the dog is inside. Make sure your garage door is closed at night. (Buy a Garage Butler) Whenever possible, but especially during vacations, arrange for

packages to be delivered to another location or have them picked up with the mail on a daily basis.

Install good outdoor lighting, motion-activated lighting and cameras. Be sure to leave a lamp or other lights on inside when you’re away.

Since most burglars enter from the back of the house, consider in-stalling security films that make breaking glass more difficult.

Record the serial numbers of all of your valuables and take photos.

Personal Security:

Keep an eye on children walking alone. Walking in groups is better. Meet your neighbors and know them on a personal basis. Pay attention to your surroundings when you get out of your car. Even when you’re at home, get in the habit of looking out your win-

dows often, and pay attention to what is happening on your block. Don’t hesitate to call us about any suspicious vehicle or person. And

be sure to give the dispatcher a detailed description. Check on elderly neighbors and family members during the hottest

and coldest months of the year.

Protecting Vehicles:

Lock your car. It seems obvious, but many people don’t do this. Don’t leave valuables in your car, including power cords. Whenever possible, don’t park in the street. Use your driveway.

PROJECT BRAYS

By Billy Pilgrim On August 10, HCFCD reported that the Project Brays contract from Bertner in the TMC to 2,200 feet upstream of Buffalo Speedway was 95% complete and was scheduled to finish by the end of the month. The next (second to last) contract start was delayed for several weeks due to rescinding of the low bidder’s contract award by the Harris County Commissioner’s Court at its monthly meeting on July 11. HCCC awarded the contract to the second low bidder. The contractor, Quest Civil Constructors, began by installing pollution prevention items and completing survey activities. Channel reconstruction began on August 14 just west of the Bevlyn Street outfall to the Stella Link Bridge with removal of the existing asphalt trail and trees located within the District right-of-way construction area. The trail will be closed to all traffic along the south bank during this segment of this contract. Completion of this contract from 2,200 feet upstream of Buffalo Speedway to 2,900 feet upstream of South Rice is scheduled for completion in August, 2018. Replacement of the Buffalo Speedway Bridge is still scheduled to begin in July, 2018 and complete in August, 2019.

BRAYS BAYOU ASSOCIATION MEETING by Charles Goforth

As you may recall, this meeting which was scheduled in June had to be cancelled due to Tropical Storm Cindy. The September BBA meeting will be departing from a long standing tradition of convening on the third Mon-day of the month in order to host this event. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, September 19 at 7:30 pm at 4300 W. Belfort (Willow Meadows Baptist Church). Speakers include Russ Poppe, Executive Director of the Harris County Flood Control District and Steve Costello, Chief Resilience Officer "Flood Czar" for the City of Houston. Discussion and conversation will focus on how the city, county and other entities DO work together towards achieving the goal of reducing the risk of flooding in the Brays Bayou Watershed. We will also ad-dress the misconceptions regarding the coordination between the city/county and the effects one project might have on another. There will be updates on Project Brays and possible future flood risk reduction opportunities. There will also be information and updates from additional experts regarding real estate impact, elevation grants and Flood Plain maps. If you have any concerns or doubts about flooding or drainage issues, this is the oppor-tunity to have them addressed!

REMEMBER WHEN? by Germaine Welch

Have you ever wondered about a quiet residential street named Glen Haven Boulevard beginning at the South Main Corridor, breaking at Kirby, beginning again at Buffalo Speedway? It was named after Glenn “King of the Wildcatters” McCarthy. Born in 1907 near Spindletop, by eight years old he worked for 50 cents an hour taking water to oil field roughnecks. He attended Tulane University on a football scholarship, injured a leg, and later attended Texas A&M and Rice Institute dropping out to start his own oil business. Between 1931 and 1942 he struck oil 38 times. By 1949 he had 400 producing wells and an estimated wealth of $2,000,000. When the country clubs of Houston banned his membership, he borrowed money to build the Shamrock Hotel at a cost of $21 million. It opened on St. Patrick’s Day 1949 with 18 stories, and 1,100 rooms decorated in 63 shades of green. It was the biggest and finest hotel in Houston boasting a swimming pool so large you could water ski in it. McCarthy had private trains and his Hughes’ plane would bring celebrities from all over the world for the grand opening. An estimated 50,000 people lined Main Street to watch yellow convertibles convey his guests for the biggest party Houston had ever seen. Described by Time Magazine (1986) as a “Hollywood version of a Mississippi River gambler” with “a brawler’s shoulder-swinging walk” he was the hard-drinking, quick to anger oilman who inspired Edna Ferber’s novel and subsequent movie Giant. But his wealth did not last. He sold the Shamrock to Hilton Hotels in 1954 to be destroyed 1987 while 20,000 Houstonians watched what someone called an Irish Wake. In the end, McCarthy was quoted as saying “The oil business made the state of Texas and the Shamrock filled it in.” (Historic Houston Streets by Marks Hinton; N.Y. Times Obituaries; chron/local/history/houston; L.A. Times, 1986).

HAPPY UPDATE FOR LEASHES AND COLLARS CALL OUT!

As you may recall, Good Neighbor Melissa Aldrich asked neighbors to donate extra dog leashes and collars for a spay and neuter clinic in Mexico. Neighbors answered the call! Melissa writes “Many thanks for putting out the request for donations of new and used dog collars and leashes. Braeswood Place residents donated over 100! There were so many that the original transit plan to ship them to a California P.O. Box was replaced with another friend traveling to Mexico taking them in a big suit-case. Thanks to all for an overwhelming response. So many dogs will now leave the clinic with com-fortable walking attire!”

DANGEROUS DISEASE DETECTED! PLEASE CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOG! There is a bacteria found in dog feces called Clostridium. It can cause botulism and is highly transmittable to humans as well as to other pets. Children can step in this and very easily catch this disease. Please remember to be a good neighbor and pick up after your dog. It is easy to buy rolls of pet waste baggies at pet stores or use produce baggies from the grocery store. Remember, not only is this against the law but it is jeopardizing the health of children, adults and other pets in the neighborhood. Thank you!

YARD OF THE MONTH by Jackie Addington

Braeswood Place has true environmental treasures at work in their garden at 7518 Prestwick. Maria and James McAdams' efforts to make the world a better place is demonstrated in so many ways. They are the guardians of the creek that flows behind their lot and the two on either side by clearing it of debris, mowing its banks, and planting butterfly and bee friendly plants. They have built a specially designed monarch butterfly sanctuary and recycle the milkweed and other plants they grow for the larvae and newly hatched monarchs. In the past three months they have released over 90 butterflies and we counted over 36 soon to emerge from their pupal stage. Benches, water features, a labyrinth, and well placed rocks are provided for the human species. Passion flowers are artfully arranged in the front yard for the gulf fritillary butterflies. Come hear more about this lovely, serene garden on September 25 when Maria will share her recycle, reuse, and repurpose philosophy to the Garden Club at 3803 Tartan Lane. The club will be visiting this garden soon.

The minute Steve walked through our home, we knew we had made the right decision … Saved us thousands … It is so refreshing to deal with someone who is knowledgeable and honest in their trade and you are all of that and more … The assured confidence you exhibit, as we learned throughout the process, could only come from your knowledge of the area, integrity, hard work, and true concern for each customer you deal with in a sale … We had such a sense of peace about the process from the moment you entered the front door … Your attention to detail made everything go very smoothly; your ad-vice and guidance were welcomed and spot-on! … In the sell- ing of my home you were forced to over- come one unforeseen obstacle after anoth- er. In spite of the myr-iad difficulties you never seemed per-turbed or inconven- ienced and always maintained a positive and supportive atti-tude … Your compassion, intuitive knowledge, and confident ap-proach allowed us to breathe a collective sigh of relief and trust you were on top of every detail … I can't say enough about Steve Anton's local knowledge of the market. He has contacts, responds quickly to phone or email and is a very pleasant professional to work with...You handled this transaction as if it were your own home you were sell-ing. No one could ask for more … Through it all you made yourself available at a moment's notice to answer our questions -- and boy, did we have a bunch. You patiently answered each one … More than the asking price … Dead-on instincts ... Absolutely correct in his estimates

‘ The best decision we ever made. ’

Pay attention, because in all likelihood this problem will happen to you. And most are not prepared.

One of my client-couples, who were nearing retirement, paid me a visit. Their finances were in excellent order. From a lifetime of work, the couple had built up substantial personal wealth, had social security as well as a small pension from the wife’s job as a nurse.

So why were they worried?

Because those social security and pension checks, while nice to have, would not be enough to cover their living expenses in retirement.

That’s where the accumulated wealth kicks in. No problem, right?

Problem. Despite their affluence, the couple didn’t know how to go from accumulating wealth to distributing it to themselves. They had all these accounts (IRAs, brokerage, savings, etc.). But how could they take those and turn them into a monthly income to live on, after the paychecks stopped coming in?

I reminded them that this was good problem to have, and an easy one to solve. There are various approaches. The one I recommend is called the “Paycheck System.”

Periodically, in a market-wise, tax-wise fashion, we identify enough of your assets to liquidate to cover living expenses for the next six months. Then we have the broker send you regular checks, either monthly or every two weeks, just like when you were working.

While this is happening, your dividends and interest payments keep getting reinvested at your appropriate risk tolerance, just like when you were working. When the next six-month period approaches, we do the same thing again.

The Paycheck System makes for a very seamless transition from work to retirement. And that’s important, because it lets you start enjoying retirement right away!
