There is a lot to look forward to this month: back to school, Texans football, and hopefully a cold front or two. (Can you tell I’m ready?) I would like to express my appreciation for Eliza Wright Rappaport for volunteering to chair our Neighborhood Night Out festivities. Please look for her information in the Sentinel and reach out if you are interested in hosting your block on October 1. This is an excellent event and a great way to say hello or catch up with new and familiar families and friends in our community. We would also like to thank our younger neighbors for volunteering in the BPHA office this summer. Maggie Morran and Ninni Vashisht diligently helped to get out membership letters to our neighbors who joined the homeowner’s association. They were lifesavers for our office staff of one! As school starts back up, please keep in mind that children and parents will be walking to and from the great schools in our area. Please drive cautiously in and around the school zones. Additionally, thank you to all the teachers heading back to work. This time of year, I believe most parents have a heightened appreciation for the work that you all perform! Remember to keep sidewalks clear. Obstructions should remain cleared to accommodate pedestrians. Remember to trim low hanging limbs and landscaping. Remind children and forgetful husbands (like me) to bring in their toys and tools. Finally, in the coming months you might hear quite a bit of discussion regarding Proposition 4 and the Texas Constitution. I would like to be clear; I am not advising a vote for or against this measure. However, I am strongly suggesting that everybody understand the wording of the proposition prior to casting your ballot. BPHA reached out to our State Representative, Sarah Davis, concerning the wording on the ballot. You can find her response on page 5. If you have questions, please reach out to your Congress person for clarity. On a lighter note: congratulations to all of those moving back into their homes after Harvey and go Texans! SECURITY UPDATE by Steve Anton

A scary photo of an attempted lunchtime burglary — and they were caught!

Early last month, 2 men were photographed attempting to break into a home in our neighborhood. It’s troubling that it occurred at noontime and on a mid-summer day when many families are likely to be at home.

The men were dropped off by a partner, knocked on the front door and then went around back and shattered the glass patio door. According to deputies, they were scared away when someone returned home just before they climbed into the house. Minutes later, the thieves crossed Bellaire Blvd. into Southside Place and were spotted as they entered anoth-er back yard. Both men were arrested within the hour. They were linked to 5 other home burglaries, and each of them had 3 previous convictions for home burglary.

There are some clear lessons we learn from events like this:

Cameras work. They are cheap and easy to install and provide police with excellent evidence that leads to arrests. Cameras also act as a deterrent, and criminals often turn away as soon as they spot them. For as little as $200, you can have video coverage of your home’s front and back entrances.

No time of day is safe. Criminals know that in a busy, affluent neighbor-hood, homeowners are often away on vacation, driving kids to summer activities, and enjoying a mistaken sense of security.

Criminals take big risks. Unless they are scared away by a camera or a homeowner or a watchful neighbor, burglars are coming in. Their despera-tion for cash or guns or drugs pushes them to take chances.

Look at the gray box to the left. Count the vacation watches and count the burglaries. In July, 979 of our neighbors took advantage of the valuable opportunity to have an armed deputy visit their home every day that they were away on vacation.

And there is no doubt that this amazing service had an effect on the number of home burglaries — which was zero for July.

You can enjoy this great service and the peace of mind it provides by joining the Constable Patrol Program. By now you have received your annual invoice for membership, and the vast majority of us already have rejoined the program. There are many benefits to your annual membership, but the Vacation Watch is a clear and tangible way to keep your home and your family safe. A deputy will visit your home multiple times, and the dispatcher will have your contact information, the names of any authorized visitors and contact information for your trusted friends or family who can be reached in case of an emergency.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT – TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1 by Eliza Wright Rappaport

Held annually on the first Tuesday in October, Neighborhood Night Out is a national initiative to encourage residents to get outside and spend an evening among neighbors. Knowing our neighbors is so important – it not only strengthens our sense of community, but it is one of the most effective ways to prevent crime. Each block is encouraged to host a gathering and the constable patrol will stop by participating blocks to greet residents. As you start planning your fall, consider hosting a Neighborhood Night Out party for your block! Thanks to those who have already signed up. Hosting can be as simple as setting out a cooler of beverages in your driveway, or more involved, like organizing a potluck supper. The time is generally 6-9pm but is up to each host. Please reach out to [email protected] to sign up to host or inquire about your block. We can provide you with a sample invitation to distribute and a sign-in sheet to collect current names and contact info to share. With so much changing in the neighborhood in the last few years, this is a valuable opportunity to connect and meet new faces. Let’s get out there and celebrate our amazing and vibrant community on October 1!

TRASH, RECLYCLING, YARD and HEAVY TRASH PICKUP

BPHA has received a high volume of calls concerning trash that was not picked up on their usual day. The City of Houston (COH) has been dealing with a high surplus of trucks that are out of service and a shortage of drivers. They have contracted with a private company to help while they await the arrival of new trucks. The COH has ordered 175 new Solid Waste vehicles, including 90 garbage/recycling trucks, which will replace half of the fleet. Residents should already see some of the new trucks in our neighborhood as the additional units are delivered through April 2020. If you are missed, call 311 to report it to the COH. Be sure to ask for the case number. Call your City Council member and ask them to follow up on the case number. The Council Member for District C (north of the bayou) is Ellen Cohen, 832-393-3004. The Council Member for District K (south of the bayou) is Martha Castex-Tatum at 832-393-3016.

GOOD NEIGHBOR STORY by Nancy Daly

On the afternoon of July 17, I was babysitting my daughter’s small five-year-old dog when a friend stopped by around 5 pm. The dog ran out when I opened my door. Our efforts to chase him, by car and on foot, were fruitless. I started calling anyone I could think of for help and a kind friend suggested the Constable Patrol. By this time, an hour had passed, and I feared for the dog in evening traffic. What a relief! A neighbor had reported a similar dog a half-mile away. The Constables called to inform me another neighbor had called, and they had the dog near where he had been seen. He had managed to get into the poor Farm Ditch, and they had retrieved him. Gratefully, I thanked them and took the dog home for a much-needed bath. The Constable’s’ willingness to venture into the ditch for the dog, and the two good neighbors who reported a missing dog saved his life. All of you have my profound thanks.

LONGFELLOW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL by Jenny Rozelle

A new school year has begun, and we have exciting news! Longfellow’s school rating has improved to a B! The primary reason for our rating improvement is our students’ academic progress. We are incredibly proud of our wonderful students, teachers and school administrators who work so hard every day! The Kindergarten Play Date was held on August 24 so new kindergarten students and their families could meet each other before school started. All elementary students and families were invited to attend Meet the Teacher Night on August 22 to learn more about their new teachers and classes. The school will hold its Open House on September 17 at 6 pm. Family members can see what their students have already accomplished this year and touch base with teachers. Longfellow moms (and one teacher!) enjoyed a Longfellow Moms’ Night Out at Bacco on the Bayou on July 25. HISD Board trustee Sue Dimenn Deigaard also joined the group. We enjoyed drinks, snacks and great conversation on the back patio. A big thank you goes to Jessica Evans for organizing the event. Longfellow welcomes our new assistant principal, Mr. Garza. He comes to us after working at Raul Martinez Elementary, where he was a teacher specialist (North Area). He primarily worked as a bilingual educator and teacher leader in Houston and Pasadena ISD. Mr. Garza likes to garden, as that is something he did with his grandmother. He also loves cooking, especially for large groups. He enjoys reading as well as volunteering in local charities and feels strongly about the importance of giving back to the community. We are so happy to have him as a new member of our Longfellow family! Don’t forget to join the PTA or renew your membership for this new year. It’s a great way to get involved at Longfellow. You can join through the Longfellow website or app. Even if you were a member in previous years, you will need to renew to maintain your membership status. We look forward to seeing you at Longfellow in the coming months!

YARD OF THE MONTH by Jackie Addington

The yard of the month featured for September was recommended by a neighbor, and I am sure you will agree that this well-cared-for garden is a beauty. It has been on the list to feature for many months, but I kept missing the homeowners, Tom and Sarah Neimeyer. Tom says he grew up mowing lawns and he enjoys cutting his lawn and tending its care. The soft green zoysia lawn is semi-shaded by four stately live oaks that are the jewels of this yard. Other very nice features are the sculpted shrubs and hedges throughout the front and side yard which include azaleas, boxwood, pittosporum, Indian hawthorne, loropetalum, and a jasmine sidewalk border. Enclosed in the sculpted beds are liriope, airplane plant and large clusters of caladiums. Two planters with ivy, and mondo grass which enclose gradually elevated sections of sidewalk lead to the front entrance. A beautiful Japanese maple and crape myrtles are strategically placed to draw the eye to special features of this lovely home at 3658 Dumbarton.

The 2019-2020 school year is off to a great start! The Back to School Rumble was held the week prior to school starting and was a huge hit. Students and parents had a chance to see the classrooms, meet their teachers, catch up with old friends, make new friends and purchase school uniforms. Thank you to everyone who volunteered at the event. Traffic Reminder - With the new school year comes the return of morning and afternoon traffic. Please drive carefully and refrain from using your cell phones. Remember to be courteous to our good neighbors, allowing them ample room to access their driveways. Thank you to everyone who made pledges for our students in the 2018 Twain Tiger Fun Run. Because of your generous support, the school installed new safety glass at key entrances, added filtered bottle filling stations at each water fountain, installed new safety blinds for each classroom, and added new bike racks to accommodate the growing number of riders to school.
