Senior Information Handbook 2014-2015 Dear Student, The purpose of this handbook is to provide information that will help you in understanding the different college systems, admission process, testing requirements, financial aid and scholarships available to all students at Eleanor Roosevelt High School. It is important to remember to pay attention to deadlines. Your first step is to select 3-5 colleges to which you will apply. Remember that you must pay an applica- tion fee to each of the colleges. Always select a “safe” school as one of your choices in case you are not admitted to your “dream” school. It is important to remember that you must take the SAT Reasoning test or ACT with writing, if you are interested in attending the University of California Colleges or California State Universities. All tests must be completed by the December 2014 test date. National scholarships arrive throughout the year. As new information comes in, we will provide details in the announcements. A brochure of the national scholarships will be placed on the scholarship wall locat- ed in F132. It is your responsibility to read the requirements for the scholarship, follow directions, and mail in all required information. Local scholarship information can be found in this handbook. You will find specific information and in- structions on how to apply for local scholarships using our standard application as well as those that re- quire the specific association’s applications. Do not apply for any scholarships if you do not meet the eligibility requirements. We hope that your senior year at Eleanor Roosevelt High School will prove to be happy and rewarding. Writing the Personal Statement

The University of California admission process requires a personal statement to be included as part of the application. The personal statement is your opportunity to tell admissions and schol-arship officers important information about you that might not be evident from the rest of your application. Take time to write, rewrite, and edit. Show it to a teacher, counselor, or a friend for comments, but make sure the words you use are your own.

INSTRUCTIONS: • Applicant should respond to the two prompts using a total of 1,000 words. • Neither response should be less than 250 words. You may choose either

prompt to answer at more length. • Stay within the 1,000-word-count guidelines or under. QUESTIONS: 1. Prompt #1 - This writing prompt gives you an opportunity to describe yourself in the context of your school, community, or family. The driving force in the prompt should be describing “how” your school, family, or community has shaped your future goals. Describe the world you come from—for example, your family,

community or school—and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

2. Prompt # 2 - UC welcomes the contributions that each student brings to the campus learning environment. This question seeks to determine an applicant’s academic or creative interest and potential to contribute to the to University community. Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is

important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it

relate to the person you are?

Financial Aid Information

“Financial Aid” is a term that covers a wide variety of programs that help students and families pay for college or graduate school. Do not put off a college education because of financial reasons!

There are different sources of financial aid available. They include: 1. Federal Pell Grants - If your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is

below a certain amount you are eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, as-suming you meet all other eligibility requirements. Grants are finan-cial aid that you don’t have to pay back.

2. Cal Grant A, B, and C - Financial aid that you are not required to pay back. A. Cal Grant A - Helps low and middle income students pay tuition and fees at CSU and UC campuses, Independent colleges, and some Private Vocational Schools in California. B. Cal Grant B - Helps high potential students from disadvantaged or low-income families who otherwise would not be able to get a post-secondary education. C. Cal Grant C - Helps vocationally-oriented students interested in attending vocational or technical programs at all California Community Colleges, Hospital Schools, selected courses at several Independent Colleges, and a variety of specialized courses at eligible Proprietary Schools. D. Chafee Grant- For current or former foster youth– see your counselor for more information. 3. Work Study Program - Assigns a job that will allow you to earn money to help pay for school. 4. Loans - Borrowed money that you must repay. There are different types on loans. They include: 1. Federal Stafford Loans are Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loans Subsidized Loans - Awarded on the basis of financial need. The federal government pays the interest on the loan until you begin repayment of the loan 6 months after you graduate. Unsubsidized Loans - Not awarded on the basis of need. You will then be charged interest from the time the loan is disbursed until it is paid in full. 2. Federal Plus Loans - Enables parents with good credit histories to borrow to pay the education expenses of each child who is a dependent, under-graduate student enrolled at least half time. 3. Federal Perkins Loan - A low interest loan (5%) students with exceptional financial need. 5. Scholarship Money - Money for which you must compete either nationally, regionally, or locally. Local scholarships are your best chance of winning because you are only competing within the Corona/Norco/Eastvale area.

Simply fill in your name, address, and social security number. Your counselor will fill in your GPA and send in your information via electronic submission. Step 2: You may access and send the FAFSA application between January 1st through March 2nd.

• The online address is www.fafsa.ed.gov This is quite a lengthy application to complete. The date for the FAFSA applica-

Step 3: Upon completion of the FAFSA you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). The SAR-will report information from your application and, if there are no questions or problems with your application, your SAR will report your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), the number used in determining your eligibility for federal student aid. The results will be sent to you and the schools that you list on your application. Step 4: If it has been more than 4 weeks since you submitted your application and you have not received any info, call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243. If you ap-plied online, you can check the status of your application through FAFSA on the web. Writing the Personal Essay

The local scholarship application process involves writing a personal essay. Here are a few suggestions for writing your essay:

I. Be sure to plan your essay before you start writing. II. Follow the format of the essay completely. Essays should be 1-2 pages no

longer than two pages in length and must be typed using Times New Ro-man font size 12, single-spaced, and 1-inch margins all around the page.

A. Introduce yourself by using some of the following points: 1. Academic accomplishments - include type of program (college prep or vocational). 2. Civic or on-campus extra-curricular activities, jobs, or volunteer work. This is not the time to be modest! 3. Leadership activities and personal attributes that made you successful as a leader. B. Educational and career plans: 1. Where do you plan to go to college and what led you to make this choice? 2. What is your intended major and why? C. Financial need: 1. How will this scholarship assist you in completing your plans? 2. How will you use the money so that the sponsoring agency will feel it

is money being well spent? D. Express appreciation to the sponsoring agency for offering money to a deserving student.

III. After you have done your best writing your personal essay, let someone read it who can be objective and who will not mind offering his/her honest opinion. Do not wait until the night before the due date to compose your essay.
