About the Organisation

Established in 1989 by pioneering orthopaedic surgeon Mr Ronald Furlong, Orthopaedic Research UK (ORUK) aims to improve the lives of millions of adults and children affected by bone and joint disease through funding high quality translational research, and delivering educational events and training.

We are one of the most significant funders of orthopaedic research in the UK. The research we fund includes both basic science and applied research, and has improved treatment and care in this area in many ways. For instance, it has helped develop improved artificial joints and limbs, making them more comfortable and longer lasting; it has led to better pain relief, vastly improving the quality of life of many sufferers; it has provided vital insights into a wide range of bone and joint conditions and it has improved the treatment of injuries arising from accidents, battlefield injuries or sporting activities.

People who benefit from our research

Orthopaedic complaints affect people of all ages and include musculoskeletal trauma such as breaks and tears caused by accidents or injuries; degenerative diseases such as arthritis and osteoporosis; infections; bone tumours and congenital disorders such as muscular dystrophy.

• Currently 10 million people, including 15,000 children, in the UK are affected by arthritis 1

• 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50 will suffer from osteoporosis 2

• At some time in their lives half the people in the UK will be treated for some sort of orthopaedic condition 3

• The NHS spends £5 billion a year treating orthopaedic conditions and these account for the 4th largest NHS programme budget 4

• 31 million working days were lost in 2016 due to back, neck and muscle problems 5
