January 2020 December 2019 THE BIG SPRING SENIOR CENTER OFFERS THE FOLLOWING CLASSES:
Zumba Gold—every Monday and Thursday at 8:30 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian
Church. The cost is $2.00-a-class for those 60+/$5.00-a-class for those 50 to 59. Zumba Gold is
a low-intensity version of the Latin dance-inspired fitness class aimed at a more mature
audience. Research at Minot State University in North Dakota has indicated that Zumba not
only has an effect on physical fitness, but also on cognitive (mental) function. Just walk in.
Stretching—We stretch, using a video, at the Big Spring Senior Center. It is free for those
who are members/$5.00 for non-members or those 50 to 59. Please check the activity calendar
for dates and times; although it is usually on a Friday at 12:00 p.m. Just walk in.
T’ai Chi for Arthritis— Held on Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian
Church. T’ai Chi helps your balance; it’s a good fall preventer. Cost is $5 donation per class.
To register, call 717-776-4478. Please note calendar for schedule.
Yoga—Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The class is held at Big Spring Presbyterian
Church, 25 South Corporation Street, Newville. Yoga is a mind-body practice that combines
stretching exercises, controlled breathing and relaxation. Yoga can help reduce stress, lower
blood pressure and improve heart function (from the Mayo Clinic website). The cost of a 10-
week-session is $65/$55, if you are a member of the Senior Center. Registration and payment
are due before the classes start. Participants can opt into a session at any time and payment
will be pro-rated based on the number of remaining classes in the session.
Walk w/Ease Group Walking Program— Are you looking for a walking group? Well, here it
is. We meet at the Newville Trailhead, do some pre-walking stretches, walk for approximately
30-45 minutes, and end with post-walking stretches. Come join us at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesdays
and Thursdays, beginning in April. Walking will be at your own pace.
The Big Spring Senior Center wants to thank the Partnership for Better Health in
supporting our Zumba Gold and Yoga Programs with a $2,225 grant to supplement
the costs of our exercise programs in 2020.

Congregate Meals: The Monday through Friday
Congregate Meals are a very important service
provided by your Senior Center and the Office of
Aging and Community Services. Meals must be
ordered by noon one business day in advance. So,
if you call in the morning of your scheduled meal to
cancel due to a non-medical issue or you do not
show, you are responsible for the full purchase of
your ordered meal which is $4.44. Failure to con-
tact us that you are not coming results in a meal
that can not be served and puts the staff in a di-
lemma trying to get someone to eat the ordered
meal. Lastly, review your order with staff the week
before to confirm that your order is recorded for the
following week.
Cinema Friday Movie, Root Beer Floats
& Popcorn
Come out and join your friends at the Big Spring
Senior Center and watch a blockbuster movie on
March 27 and April 17 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. We
are asking for a $2 donation to cover the cost of
the floats and popcorn.
Wii Bowling:
Check out Wii Bowling Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m.
This game is limited to four players, so signups
are necessary.
Donate to Community Aid and your community by depositing your new and used donations in the
Community Aid Box in the parking lot of the Big Spring Senior Center and Mountain View Senior
Apartments. Quarterly, the Big Spring Senior Center receives a monetary donation for your donated
items towards the continued programming of the Center.
For a list of accepted donations contact the Big Spring Senior Center or the web address https://
communityaid.org/get-involved/donate-2/
Also, the Big Spring Senior Center has Care Cards which can be used at any Community Aid Store
toward your purchases of clothing and shoes. See Cathy at the Senior Center for a $25 Care Card.
Community Aid Mission Statement:
We are neighbors helping neighbors by accepting donations to create quality jobs, offer an affordable shopping experi-
ence, and support non-profit partners serving our local community.
Special Programs
Water Color Painting Opportunity: Mondays at 2 p.m. at the Center. Do you have an interest in
water coloring? It takes space, inspiration and motivation, and we can help. Join our friendly group of
painters with our new instructor, Kathleen Schungel, a retired art teacher of Cumberland Valley School
District and a Big Spring resident. The cost is $1/week to the Big Spring Senior Center and $5/week to
the instructor.
Crafts: Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m. at the Center. We could use your help, hands and ideas. Come and
make beaded jewelry, seasonal and everyday crafts, as well as new friends. Just walk in.
Bible Study: Every Wednesday in March and April at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Bob Van Sant of the Bere-
an Baptist Church of Newville will provide the study. The theme is “Kingdom Authority—Getting the
Upper Hand on the Underworld.”
Games at the Center: Lots of opportunities to play cards and games can be found at the Senior Cen-
ter. On Thursday at 9:30 a.m., we play 500 with a dedicated group of card players, and we are always
looking for new players. Come play Corn Hole, Shuffleboard, Ladder Ball and board games on Thurs-
day at 12:30 p.m. Bob Ballard or Bill & Linda Sweigart are our leaders. Don’t ever consider playing
games as frivolous; studies show that it stimulates your brain, which helps counter the aging process.
Game Night is Tuesday, March 31 and April 28th beginning at 6 p.m.
Mind Matters:—A Distinctive Approach to Learning: WITF, Central Pennsylvania’s affiliate for
PBS and NPR, is offering an exciting initiative for Pennsylvania Department of Aging (PDA) Senior Com-
munity Centers and Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) by providing highly-engaging ed-
ucational programming. The project, called Mind Matters, delivers a monthly series of intellectually
stimulating lectures by knowledgeable presenters on topics of most interest to older adults. Our Senior
Center is offering on Wednesday, March 11th at 9:30 a.m. “How WWI Transformed Stunt Pilots
into Aces”. Professor Guillaume de Syon hails from France and Switzerland, but has called Lancaster,
PA, home since 1994. Specialized in both European history and the history of technology, he teaches
courses in almost every historical period at Albright College in Reading, PA. We often think of military
pilots as having just popped onto the scene during the First World War, but it was not so. Because avia-
tion was so new, most pilots were individuals trying stunts at early airshows before they were called up.
Others joined the service because it was the only way to learn to fly. But how did they all fit into the ar-
mies of the Great War? This session looks at the peculiar world of early flying. On Wednesday, April
29th at 9:30 a.m. “Aging in Place: Live Longer & Stronger in your Home.” Matthew J. Gallardo is
the Director of Community Engagement and Coaching at Messiah Lifeways. His diverse background of
working in hospital and rehabilitation settings, community services, and senior housing gives him the
breadth and depth of knowledge to provide unique solutions, opportunities, and help individuals proac-
tively plan for the future. For most us as we age, we aspire to live in our homes for as long as possible.
However, if we become frail and more dependent, aging in place can be a challenge. But if done with care-
ful planning and consideration, “staying put” can be a safe and viable option. Get tips and examine ways
to successfully and safely age in place. Learn about the many resources and options available, their costs,
and how to access these services within the community.
Spring into the Easter Holiday Season with Scented Geraniums: What a lovely time of year to
come and sit for a cup of tea or coffee and put together a lovely take-home Scented Geranium arrange-
ment. All we ask is that you bring a container of your choice. Your container could be a tea cup, a
mug or a small pot. This activity will take place on Tuesday, April 14th at 9:00 a.m. at the Big Spring
Senior Center. Please sign up by Thursday, April 9th so that we know how many will be in attendance so
that the Penn State Master Gardeners will have plenty of scented geraniums on hand for your beautiful
take-home arrangements.
