Those in leadership positions or those who aspireto become effective dental public health leadersshould not be left alone to tackle the manychallenges – guidance and support are necessaryfor them to succeed and keep up the momentum.

The programme is designed to bring together, in aglobal network, individuals who wish to engage at alocal, federal or global level in bringing about lastingpositive change. Successful leaders will be available toshare their insights and all will have a chance to reflecton the demands of leadership.

As Koh and Jacobson recently stated (J Public Health2009, 31 (2) 199–201) “public health requires its leadersto stretch their minds and souls in almost unimaginableways. Public health has only recently begun to explorethe potential of formal leadership education and training.”

The Global Child Dental Fund (GCDFund) (www.gcdfund.org) is a registered charity committed

to leading this initiative. The charity builds upon theKing’s College London’s Global Child Dental HealthTaskforce project established in 2006 and whose mission is supported by the World Health Organization.GCDFund along with Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) and King’s College London (KCL),recognises effective leadership in dentistry as being the key to achieving its overall mission of improvingchild dental health for all children, and especially forthose underserved.

The Senior Dental Leaders programme in 2014(SDL-8) will focus on developing the dental workforce.

Following the popularity of the first seven years we arenow seeking nominations for an eighth cohort of participants for the next programme taking place inMarch 2014. The 2014 programme will be held at Royal Horseguards Hotel and One Whitehall Place,London, UK.

In September 2011 the Senior Dental Leaders programme was voted the best International Collaboration programme at King’s College London.

Background

Global challenges demand global leaders. If we are to meet the challenges and identify the opportunities that the next decade will bring to global oral health then we will need leaders who are expert in the theory and practice of strategic leadership.

Senior dental leaders need chances to critically re!ect on their roles now and in the future. Only then can they fully realise their capacity to create change.

!is programme will support the senior dental leaderswho will be needed to deliver these changes. !ey willbe called to work with a number of stakeholders andoperate at a demanding pace. !ey will need to deployexcellent leadership and management skills to survivethe ongoing pressures and challenges they will be facedwith. !is course will help them to do so by providingthem with access to a strong evidence base and a globalnetwork, delivering leadership support, skills and techniques.

Bene"ts for the international dental community• Building the ability of strategic leaders to deal

with the global challenges facing the dental world.

• !e development of a cadre of leaders will shapethe future direction of oral health agendas on anational and international level, driving forwardprogressive agendas to eliminate preventable dental disease.

Programme aims and bene"ts

The programme’s core aim is to equip senior leaders with the skills theyneed to drive forward action towards a cavity free world.

The programme is aimed at key individuals who wish to develop strategicleadership and management skills to advance this agenda in their owncountries and contexts. It is creating an international network of leadersthat facilitates collaboration, exchanges of knowledge, and mutual support.

At SDL-7, twenty senior dental leaders from around the world told contrasting stories of oral healthissues and presented eye-opening statistics. But regardless of the different backgrounds, everyone shared the same goal: to improveaccess to oral healthcare for the world’s underservedchildren, and improve their well-being and happiness thereby.

To be considered for participation in the programme, prospective candidates should:

• Have experience and a proven track record ofoperating successfully in a senior policy or otherleadership role

• Have the support of their Ministries of Health,Dental Association, Academic Institution or other employer

Preference will be given to those who are already in orwho are about to take up a senior leadership position.

To date the SDL programme has trained delegates from over 42 countries.

!e professional and cultural diversity of previous cohorts has signi"cantly enhanced the programme.It is intended that the next cohort will also be drawnfrom a wide range of backgrounds and cultures.

!e working language of all the sessions will be English, in which participants are expected to be pro"cient to at least TEFOL level 5. A pre-workshopquestionnaire will be used to gather relevant background information about the participants.

Course Directors

!e course will be directed by Professor RamanBedi, Professor R. Bruce Dono" and ProfessorDianne Rekow.

Professor Raman Bedi was Chief Dental O$cer for England from 2002-2005. In that time he led a major reformof dental regulation and the provision of dental services. Healso led the process facilitating water #uoridation in England.He was a Founding Board member of the LeadershipFoundation for Higher Education, a Children’s Societytrustee, and is presently the chairman of the GCDFund.

Professor R. Bruce Dono# is Dean of the Harvard Schoolof Dental Medicine and Walter C. Guralnick DistinguishedProfessor of Oral and Maxilofacial Surgery (OMFS). Dr.Dono% ’s career has centered on Harvard’s Faculty of Medicineand the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Department ofOMFS. He has made major research contributions in OMFSwith interests in wound healing, bone gra& survival, sensorynerve repair and oral cancer. He is President of the Friendsof the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research,and serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Oraland Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Dono% is also a fellow of theAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science.

Professor Dianne Rekow Professor Dianne Rekow isDean of King’s College London Dental Institute andProfessor of Orthodontics. She trained in engineering anddentistry, and her academic career has included chairing

departments of orthodontics and of basic science. Beforejoining King’s, she was the Provost of the PolytechnicInstitute of New York University. Here, her researchteams made major contributions to understandingdamage initiation and propagation in layered brittle ceramics. Professor Rekow was also the Past Presidentof the International Association for Dental Research,and previously served in leadership capacities for theAmerican Association for Dental Research, the EdwardH. Angle Society for Orthodontists, and the AmericanSociety for Mechanical Engineers.

!e event will be facilitated by Dr Tom Kennie, a leadership development specialist who has experienceof designing and running similar programmes in relatedsectors. Tom has been for 10 years Programme Directorof the national Top Management Programme for seniorleaders in higher education in the UK.

In addition to the 'core team' other internationallyrecognised speakers include:

Outcomes

The programme will develop and enhance key strategic leadership competencies. It will also allow individuals to network with aninternational group of leaders working towards the same objectives.

Programme timing and costs

The programme will take place in March 2014. An outline framework for the intensive 5 day core workshops can be found in the followingpages. The current timeplan for the application and selection of participants is as follows:

Cost!e cost of the course will be USD $10,000. !e cost will include all course fees, materials as well as hotel accommodations and subsistence from Sunday 9thuntil Friday 14th March. Any early arrival or extensionto delegate stays, outside the programme dates, will not be covered and each delegate will have to book this separately. Travel within London as part of the programme will be met from the course fees but

participants will be expected to fund travel to/fromtheir respective countries to London and anyairport/rail transfers on the start and end dates.

Conclusion!is is a unique programme which o%ers participantsthe chance to consolidate and expand their advancedleadership skills, and to develop new methods to improve the quality of policy making on return to their home location.
