SENBAZURULa grue est symbole de paix et de longévité. C’est le symbole qui me guide quand je prends mes photos et non l’oiseau. C’est le rêve aussi. Les images oniriques qui s’imposent à celui qui prend le temps de regar-der un vol de grues avec des yeux de rêveur, libres. Ce ne sont plus des oiseaux que je veux fixer sur le papier, mais des indices, des marques de réalité qui je l’espère feront échos dans l’imaginaire du spectateur.

En japonais Senbazuru représente un objet unique, une sorte d’origami géant, composé de mille grues de papier associées sur un fil. La lé-gende dit que celui qui fabrique mille grues en papier peut faire un vœu qui sera exaucé par les Dieux. Sadako Sasaki n’a pas eu cette chance.

Elle avait 2 ans quand elle a été irradiée lors du bombardement d’Hiroshima ; mais sa leucémie ne s’est déclarée qu’à l’âge de 11 ans. A l’hôpital, elle commence à confectionner des grues en papier, avec l’intention d’en faire mille et demander sa guérison aux Dieux. Elle utilise tout le papier dispo-nible, cahiers d’écolière, paquets cadeau, papier toilette.... mais malheureu-sement elle meurt après avoir confectionné sa 644ième grue. Ses cama-rades de classe termineront son Senbazuru afin qu’elle soit enterrée avec.

Dans son carnet intime, cette phrase : “J’écrirai la paix sur vos ailes et vous volerez à travers le monde pour porter ce message ».

SENBAZURUThe crane is a symbol of peace and longevity. The symbol, rather than the bird, is guiding me when I take my photos.The dream, too.

The dreamer who dares taking the time to watch the cranes fly and feel free. It’s not the birds that I want to capture then, but some clues, some simple graphic signs that I hope will echo in the spectator’s imagination.

In Japanese, ‘Senbazuru’ represents an origami made of one thousand paper cranes. According to the legend, the person who makes one thou-sand paper cranes can make a wish that will be fulfilled by the Gods.

Sadako Sasaki was not that lucky. She was 2 years old when she was irra-diated in the Hiroshima bombing, but her leukemia only appeared when she was 11. She began making paper cranes at the hospital, with the intention of reaching one thousand and asking the Gods to heal her. She used allthe paper she could find, her school notebooks, gift wrapping, toilet paper.... but she died after having made her 644th crane. Her class-mates decided to finish her Senbazuru for her and to bury her with it. In her diary, a sentence reads: «I will write peace on your wings andyou will fly around the world to carry this message.»

François Laxalt est né en 1970, vit et travaille depuis 20 ans à Pa-ris. Insatiable photographe, c’est en 2005 que cette passion est devenue une obsession en commençant la série Senbazuru.

Dès lors, ses photos commencent à être présentées dans différentes expo-sitions collectives (série Senbazuru à la Galerie Daguerre en 2007, Expo RVB+NB aux Souffleurs en 2008, série Memories à la Galerie Daguerre en 2010) et publications (série Memories dans France Photographie en 2010).

Francois Laxalt a également été un des coups de coeur du Centre Iris pour la photographie avec sa série Senbazuru. En mai et juin 2011, cette sé-rie a également été présentée lors de l’exposition ‘Poils&Plumes’ dans le cadre de l’espace photographique de l’hôtel de Sauroy à Paris, ainsi que lors des festivals photographiques de Montier en Der (Novembre 2011)et du Mois International de la Photo Eclectique (Juin 2012). Sa série MYOPE a également été sélectionnée dans le cadre festival Photocollection 2012.

«Simplicité, graphisme et transfiguration du réel sont les thèmes majeurs qui orientent mes projets photographiques.Je cherche à obliger chaque spectateur à puiser dans son être inté-rieur, ses sentiments, ses angoisses, son subconscient pour projeter sur chaque photographie ce qu’il est vraiment. Ou ce qu’il ne sait pas qu’il est».

François Laxalt lives and works in Paris. Simplicity and transfigu-ration of reality are the main themes of his work, based on series. His passion for photography became an obsession in 2005 with the brin-ging forth of the Senbazuru project. Since then, his work has been pu-blished in France Photographie (‘Memories’, 2010) and presented in seve-ral exhibitions (‘Senbazuru’ at Galerie Daguerre, 2007, ‘RVB+NB’ at Les Souffleurs, 2008, ‘Memories’ at Galerie Daguerre, 2010). François Laxalt has received an award from the Centre Iris pour la Photographie for his Senbazuru series (Paris, 2010). His work has recently been shown at the exhibition ‘Poils&Plumes’ at the Hôtel de Sauroy (Paris, May/June 2011), and in pho-to festivals ‘Montier en Der’ (November 2011) and the ‘Mois International de la Photo Eclectique’ (June 2012).His MYOPE project has been selected for the festival Photocollection 2012 Paris.

‘My artistic statement is to bring forth new universes in each spectator’s imagination. I want to make pictures that do not speak for themselves. I want the to force the spectator to make a subconscious act and interpret the photo by searching his inner being for his feelings, his fears and to find in each photograph his true self.’
