Challenges related tocircular economy asseen bytheinnovation clusters(press conference 3/2/16)

1. Identify hurdles

2. Go for innovation and new technologies (pyrolysis, steam explosion,

solvolysis, reactive grinding, …)

3. Encourage SMEs participation

4. Adapt Legislation

5. Build new bridges between sectors and regions

1. The clusters objectives

Ø The Walloon Government has created 6 Competitiveness Clusters(See Greenwin presentation)

Objective: to create activity and jobs by innovative projectswith international dimension, based on networks that combine large companies,SMEs, universities, research and competence centers

Ø MecaTech covers the field of mechanical engineering

Ø Scope of mechanical engineering: functional systems and upstraem activities

Ø Many technologies and fields of application

Ø 2 transverse priorities: circular and digital economy

Hybridization of technologies

Networking is not a fashion but an absolute necessity

3. Main figures (2007- 2016)102 innovative projects, 285 millions € investment (without manufacturing, marketing and sales)

involvingØ44 large companies (participating in projects 96 times)Ø125 SMEs (180) Ø77 university laboratories (160)Ø18 research centers (72)Ø5 high scool (6)Ø3 competencies centers (22)

272 ENTITIES (536 INSTANCES OF PARTICIPATION), NOT INCLUDING SUBCONTRACTORS

4. MecaTech & Circular EconomyWith Next, MecaTech

§ is concerned to introduce Circular Economy in every company (in which circular economy is not the core business). Presently:

Ø 14 projects in energy/power management, generation, and storage.Ø 4 projects in production processes that use raw materials more efficiently

§ support projects In companies where Circular Economy is core business. 4 projects for waste recovery and reutilization

These projects bring together 164 different players, 82 of which are enterprises, for a total of € 99 millions € in investments.

MecaTech participate to the creation and development of the REVERSE METALLURGY platform. This platform pull together ressources (59 millions €) for giving rise to cutting-edge technologies (presently 4 projects and others in preparation)

• COMETTRAITEMENTS,• ULg (Greenmat)

• ULB(4MAT)

Consortium Partners : • COMETTRAITEMENTS,

• SLEGTEN,• ULg,

• CERTECH,

• CRMGroup.

5. Project Examples

MecaTech, in line with the framework defined by SRIW/Next,

- wants to have Circular Economy in every company

- develops projects saving energy, materials and more efficient productionprocesses,

- creates synergies among projects and densifies the network

- however the changes in business models toward functionnal economy are slower to implement

6. Conclusions
