Thank You!

First and foremost, we’d like to say a massive thank you for your support of Henley Swim. We were devastated to cancel the Classic on 28th June, but are delighted that you will be swimming in the Selkie Henley Classic event at

the Outdoor Swimmer Henley Swim Festival, and we really look forward to welcoming you on SATURDAY 29TH AUGUST 2020. The swim will start from 7am, and will be 2.1km - the first 250m upstream and then downstream all the way to the finish.

There are a number of changes to the usual format, made with safety as the driving factor. We have measures in place to protect swimmers, volunteers and crew, and ask you to read this information pack really carefully, even if you have swum the Classic before, to be sure that you are aware of all that is required of you regarding COVID-19 precautions.

Tow floats will be compulsory this year, this is to help the safety crew and to give swimmers the ability to rest in the water, reducing the chance of putting others at risk. We have negotiated an exclusive arrangement with Swim Secure to get 20% off products. Visit the Swim Secure website and use the code HENLEY20 (one use per email address). The code is valid until Sunday 23rd August 2020. We are sorry but we cannot loan tow floats on the day. As there will be no bag drop this year, it is worth looking for a tow float / dry bag that has space to carry a few items in a waterproof chamber.

For 2020 we will not be having mass wave starts, but will be setting swimmers off one-by-one. Your time will start when you cross the timing mat and get into the water. If you wish to acclimatise on getting into the water that will be possible, this acclimatisation time will be included in your swim time. If you want a record of your actual swim time we suggest you use a sports tracking device to measure your time.

When you signed up for the Selkie Henley Classic you selected a wave based on your average swim time. This wave will be on your confirmation email. Please check the wave number and use it to see your approximate walk time and start time below. Please note the waves will be going off in reverse order, so fastest swimmers first.

We recommend that you arrive on site 60 minutes before your designated start time.

On The Day

Arrival:We recommend that you arrive at the event area approximately 60 minutes before your start time, and as ‘swim ready’ as you can be.

Race Pack Collection:This can be done on either Friday or Saturday. You will need photographic ID. Head to the registration area on Friday between 3pm

and 7pm OR Saturday between 6am and 7.15am. Your race number will be allocated at registration, you will then collect a numbered hat and timing chip, plus a velcro ankle strap.

Preparation:Thread the ankle strap through your timing chip and wear on either ankle outside your wetsuit. Wear the swimming hat supplied.

Bag Drop:There will be no bag drop at this year’s event. Please leave your bags in your car, or with a friend, and carry your keys in your tow float / dry bag.

Walk to Start:The walk to the start will take approximately 15 minutes. There is also a 10 minute walk back from the finish. Please set off from the event village approximately 25 minutes before your swim time (see page 4). The route is a mixture of grass and stony path. Due to COVID-19 regulations we will not be transporting any shoes or clothes from the start to the finish. We advise you to wear a pair of light flip-flops to walk to the start, and then carry them either inside, or tied to your tow float so that you can put them on at the end for the walk back. Skins swimmers should also take a hoodie in their tow float. Alternatively, if you have spectators they can carry your clothing and shoes.

On The Day

Safety Briefing:This is compulsory for all swimmers. We will be sending a video safety briefing the week before the event. Please make sure you watch this. Additional reminders will be given at the start shortly before you enter the water.

Start:When you get to the start, please form a socially distanced queue and listen to where the volunteers ask you to stand. Do not block the towpath. When you get to the front of the queue, walk over the timing mat, sanitise your hands and enter the water as directed by the start team. Move away from the entry as soon as you can. Your time will start when you cross the mat. If you wish time to acclimatise move over to the left and find a clear space until you are ready to start. This acclimatisation period will be included in your swim time.

During Your Swim:Although there are restrictions in place, the river is still open to all traffic. Our safety teams will ensure that swimmers and boats are kept separate, and while we try to avoid it, there may be occasions when the safety team have to ask swimmers to stop, to allow river traffic through. Please follow the instructions given to you by the safety team. Please be as considerate as possible towards your fellow swimmers. If you are caught by faster swimmers, move to one side to let them through. If you catch slower swimmers, don’t swim over the top of them. Please see page 15 for further COVID-19 related swim advice.

Finish:The finish is via a shallow beach area. You will not be helped out of the water unless you specifically ask for help. Your time will stop when you are out of the water and over the timing mat. Please continue to move forwards to the hand sanitising area, and to collect your medal. You will be asked to remove your own timing chip and to drop it into a bucket.

Event Area:You will then walk back to the event area where you can get dressed by your car, have something to eat and drink.

● Use hand gel or wipes provided/wash hands in fresh water after you have swum and before you eat
