Dear Friends,

I had the privilege of leading a contingent of 20 members from India comprising of Doc Sid and Lakshmi, Sathyendra and Brinda (club 32), Vijayanth from Coimbatore, Gopal and Smita Chopra, Harsh and Renuka Sehgal, Anil and Anju Keshavan (club 116) Pankaj and Ranjana, Ajit and Puja and Sumalini Khullar and Myself and Priti, Mehak and Nikhil Mehra to the HYM at Marrakesh.

The event started on the 12th afternoon with a YAPs meeting followed in the evening by meeting the Mayor and the deputy mayor of Marrakesh and I had the honor of presenting my flag and pin to them on behalf of 41 India. This was followed by an amazing informal night party at Dar Sukkar wherein we rocked till the wee hours of morning.

The next morning the HYM started at 8.30 am and Pankaj and I represented the country. Many deliberations took place and we participated in three workshop discussions. One was regarding change of name. The second one was regarding imposition of 1 euro per member to collect a corpus that would be given for an education project and the third one was an MOU with RT International. Details shall be discussed and shared at the Next NEX board meeting as these are going to be coming up as a motion at the next AGM at Belgium in April 2019.

However, I am happy to announce that the International President made a special mention of 41 India and said that even though we are third in terms of membership but are first in terms of vibrancy and performance. It was a great feeling to have our association recognized at the international forum. That evening at the banner exchange i had the privilege of exchanging my banner and gifts with the International President as well as with Aziz the Moroccan President and the HYM convener Jaleel.

The banquet was an amazing affair where the Moroccan members had organized a special performance for Team India. They had a dance performance on the INDIAWALE song from the film Happy New Year which had the entire Indian team pumped up and participate and dance along with the troupe. It was applauded by all nations present there. India hitting the international scene hard. Many other good news and developments on the yaps front as well as tangent front. Shall leave it to the IRO to announce the same. All in all a very fruitful meeting and have returned with many good memories. Thank you team Morocco Aziz, Bachir, Kamal, Jaleel, Salah and all members for a wonderful event. Your warmth and hospitality made us feel like we were at home.

Friendship Forever,Rajiv Mehra.President (2018-19)

Dear friends,Greetings and good wishes from Tangent India.

At the outset, let me introduce my dynamic team: VP Bijal Kalbag, Secretary Jayashree Chaudhry, Treasurer Jyoti Singh Deo, IPP Renuka Sehgal, Editor Nirmala Kustagi and Website Convenor Ranjana Singh.

My theme for the year is CELEBRATE FRIENDSHIP. We hope to enjoy a year long celebration of Life, Love, Laughter and Lasting memories.

Our quarterly themes are Health and wellness, Community Service, Learning and education, and Art, Music and culture. A unique idea that has been introduced this year is the BINGO CARD. Idea being, it creates a sense of fun and motivation among members to foster and strengthen friendships. This Bingo Card is the brainchild of our National Secretary Jayashree.

We have planned to design and create a website for Tangent India which should go live a few months from now.

I urge every 41 club to initiate the formation of a tangent club for their ladies, as this is imperative for the friendship not to disintegrate.

Here’s wishing President Rajiv Mehra and his Board all the very best for a successful year ahead. Let’s have Friendship Continued Forever, and May the hinges of friendship never rust. Sukanya Lakshmi NarayanPresident, Tangent India, 2018-19

PRE TOUR: A REPORTAll 20 participants from India participated in the pre tour organized by Team Morocco. It was a 3 nights 4 days tour taking you through the beautiful cities of Marrakesh, Casablanca, Rabat and Fes. Total participants on the tour were 140 members from our international fraternity including Team India.

WE had our own private bus with our own independent guide and needless to say ours was the most happening bus in tour. With all Indian delicacies flowing and Bollywood music blaring all members singing and dancing. Our experiences during the tour were just fantastic. Moroccans love Indians and we were welcomed wherever we went. Even on the streets of Morocco, in the market we were greeted by people and they kept calling out Sharukh Khan. In fact we had one Moroccan who broke out singing a Bollywood number Hum Gore nahin, hum Kale sahi and the entire team started dancing in the middle of the street with him. I am sure the photographs will speak a thousand words but I must say travelling with the 41 family is an experience by itself. The bonding and friendship created is unimaginable. Highly recommended!!

INTERNATIONAL FAMIT: A REPORTThe fun and fellowship continued post the HYM with 4 families namely Khullars, Chopras, Sehgals and Mehras going off to Portugal for a short Famit. It was my privilege to be travelling with three past presidents. It was a great learning experience for me. The trip took us to Lisbon, Porto, Sintra, Obidos, Nazare, Fatima and many small cities and villages. Thanks to the wonderful effort of Tangent Smita Chopra who planned the itinerary and took all steps to make the trip a memorable one. All of us had a great time and fellowship and friendship grew to another level. Never knew that travelling with the 41 family could be so much of fun. Surely going to make this a habit!! All in all a fun trip leaving me with some of my fondest memories. Gopal its time for a HOT CHOCOLATE!!

BIRTH OF 41 CLUBS OF INDIA & YAPsAs narrated by INDU CHANDOK

Association of 41 Clubs of India had an accidental birth. Its an interesting story that I would want all you to know and cherish.

In 1972, I along with 4 past Presidents Varan Khare, Kavi Singh, Jeeti and My brother Bharat Bhushan met me at Delhi Gymkhana. They suggested I meet up with a representative of ex-tablers association of UK and see how we can start a similar movement in India.

Few months later in 1972, we formed the first 41 Club of India. It took 9 years to form the requisite 5 Clubs in India to form a national association. I (Indu Chandok) became the first President of Association of 41 Clubs of India. Today we have 198 Clubs and 2880 members.

I was the International President in 1991-92. In 1992, I thought we should have an exchange Program of children of 41ers of India & Europe to further the international understanding & cooperation. Thus came into existence – Young Ambassadors Program (YAPs). In year 1, in 1972 we sent 24 children to North Europe and South Europe trip and in turn hosted 24 children. In 2017 we sent 25 children on 3 tours of North Eurepe, South Europe and South Africa. We in turn hosted 22 children.

I attended 41 AGMs of which 28 were on a trot. I loved traveling across and met 41ers across the World.

I am a very lucky man having had the privilege of seeing in person the father of our nation Mahatma - my memory of Gandhiji affectionately known as Bapuji.

My Great Grandfather( my mother’s maternal Grand father) Late Satish Chandra Dasgupta, known as Bengal Gandhi, was an ardent admirer of Mahatma. Bapuji used to stay at the Ashram in Sodepur whenever he would come to this part of the country. Whenever Bapuji stayed at the Ashram, my family also did the same.

Bapuji used to take walks around the ashram twice a day. It was Bapuji’s habit while walking to rest his arms on somebody’s shoulder who would walk along with him. He would prefer children to give him the shoulder unlikely to understand the sensitive conversation taking.

I used to be very fond of muri, One such evening I was sitting with Frontier Gandhi Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan Saab enjoying my muri and saw from a distance that Bapuji while on his evening stroll, was coming towards us. What I feared happened. Bapuji waved at me and called me ‘Asok ,idhar aao’. I was devastated and totally reluctant to give up my pleasure and retorted ‘ dekhte parchona ami muri khacchi. Ami akhon jabona’. (Can’t you see I am eating muri. I will not go now). Bapuji just laughed and carried on.

Once during that time Sri Sarat Chandra Bose, brother of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose came to meet Bapuji. Bapuji called me so at one side will be me, who knew no English or Hindi and on the other side Sarat Babu. A picture was taken and appeared on the front page of a daily with a caption’ Mahatma and his child friend’, The image of Sarat Bose was deleted. If you look at the picture carefully you can see the silhouette of Sarat Bose.

Today when I think about the indulgence and love that I received from the great man, I ponder how lucky and blessed I am

THE MAKING OF FTE From 1962 when we had the 1st charter in Madras, every President had their own themes … from water conservations, old age home support, orphans, green crusades etc etc . As we grew in numbers & intensity we realized that we have little or no recall with key stakeholders, due to dissipation of our energies in so many projects.

Right from 1996 ( VVS Ravi as President from Guntur ) & 1997 ( our own Uttam macha as President from Ooty ) we had our projects around Teach a child / educate a child. These formative years saw a huge potential of our young organization rallying around ‘Education’ It was an idea who’s time had come! We at the national boards went through a meticulous planning process with a clear, crisp project plan to call it “FREEDOM THROUGH EDUCATION” Under the dynamic Vagish Dixit, President 1998 from Hyderabad, we discussed only FTE in all board meetings. This also coincided with chartering of Tables in Sri lanka who whole heartedly supported RTI. Visits to RTBI & Dutch tables gave us springs on our feet & wings to fly with assured funds. All we had to do was present the plan with a long term vision. Giving a Brand purpose to RTI & aligning all our energies in building FTE . In the winters of Dec 1998, Vagish presented it to the floor & with a thunderous voice it was carried with renewed vitality. As we focused on the heart of the problem, where in illiteracy breeds crimes & an uncivilized society , in the first year itself tables started adapting schools & raising funds. Our own BV from Trichy, who was President for 18 months due to the new format of COB, 1999-2000 carried the torch forward. In the next 2 years with Super hero Drin from Bangalore & the man for all seasons Illango from Coimbatore as Presidents, FTE moved on like a hurricane making history. Even the Netherlands adopted FTE as their national project. As a publicity convener, Table Talk editor, Projects & fund raising convenor etc in those years, I was fortunate to have been a part of history. Am indeed proud of our tribe then & now … the flame gets stronger & the impact we create bigger!! Good to see some movement with the 41ers clubs aligning itself to RTI projects & helping FTE to grow further .

Cheers PC “

INKTOBER Inroduction.

INKTOBER is an INK Festival so to speak in the month of OCTOBER and has been Inernationally celebrated since the last couple of years.

Topics were given by way of a “Single Word” for each day of the month, The idea is for artists to come up with Artwork based on personal interpretation of the word

The Medium has to be Ink / Ink pens ONLY. All my Original works are on A5 size, almost all done freehand, and takes between 2-4 hrs from conceptualizing, drawing, rendering and posting.

A word that was borne out of the Flower Power Days, in the 1960s into the 1970s. The Peace Symbol, the stylized Victory Symbol, Neck Medallions, Florals, Patches on shredded jeans, tassels, 32 inch flared bell bottoms, outrageous GOGO Watches, chillums, the now famous Smiley, Beads, Florescent Colours, Free form letters were all part the GROOVY attire. Its probably the most apt 1960s word for the present day used word SWAG.!!

PIN ITEvery month Selfie will feature an interesting Pin design and the story behind it

The face of John Lennon is the official logo of Naughty40 (Club-1116) and the club also has pins, cuff links & T-shirts carrying the logo and in several iterations. Its available only in Black and White. The Pin and logo were done during the formation of the club in the year 2008 and due to its popularity, its been widely distributed within the 41er community.

One of the reasons for choosing John Lennon as the mascot was to have someone who is revered and appreciated by both the young and old and from the timeless Beatles group which is still having a cult status. Black & White was chosen because it is again gives a sense of subtleness and is more relevant to the period which reflects Beatles and of course, it is stylish.

Naughty40 is extremely proud of their mascot and logo as it kind of represents the vibrancy of the club and its members.

AYUDHA POOJA CELEBRATIONS AT 41 CLUB SECRETARIATAyudha Pooja is one of the most significant aspect of Navratri. In Indian culture, we set up this aspect that whatever tool it may be, if you want to use your plough, first bow down to it and then use it. If you want to use a book, first bow down to it and then use it. Ayudha Pooja means, every implement that you use, whether it is in industry, agriculture or anything else, you approach it respectfully. Unless you approach something with a certain sense of reverence and a deep sense of involvement, it will not yield.(Source: Sadhguru/Isha Foundation)
