1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1.1 INTRODUCTION

Chennai Institute of Technology (CIT) was established in the year of 2010 by Shri. P. Sriram,Managing Director of MK Group of Companies with AICTE approval and affiliated to Anna University,Chennai. According to CIT-Chairman, An Engineer is a solution provider to the problems of the mankindbringing him a balanced life; which has social impact; bring development to the nation, at an affordable costand without creating any harm to the environment. In 2018, the departments of CSE, ECE, EEE andMechanical Engineering were accredited by NBA. CIT enjoys being Scientific and Industrial ResearchOrganization (SIRO) recognized by Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, 2F status by UGC andMSME recognized Business Incubation Centre. The institute is also privileged to be vested with the MHRD'sInstitution Innovation Council (IIC). CIT gives at most importance for the student to be aware of the socialproblems and committed in promoting their holistic development. CIT promotes the students to establishcontact with the neighborhood communities and interact with them to explore the opportunities for social work.

CIT roadmap of success starts with Career guidance for secondary school children - Funjinia, CITCOS -Project Exhibition, Competition based learning, Industry connect, International collaborations, Innovativelearning programs and ends with a successful career.The uniqueness of CIT starts with its extraordinaryperformance in the admissions. CIT graduates are placed in both national and international reputedorganizations with top salary of 22 lakhs per annum.

CIT has earned the reputation of being an “Industry Allied Institute” complimented with foreignindustry/institute collaboration from China, Japan and Germany. Having acclaimed as an Industry ConnectedInstitution, CIT has grabbed the attention of the industry and the education fraternity at national andinternational level for its Centre of Excellences. Curricular Aspects

Chennai Institute of Technology has strong focus on Outcome Based Education in all programmes andcourses have well-defined objectives and learning outcomes aligned with mission of the college. The Undergraduate and Post graduate programmes offered by the college caters the industrial needs of the engineeringfraternity. The Academic Audit Committee of the institution verifies academic activities to satisfy therequirements of the academia and industry. The introduced new courses fulfill the cutting edge technology andsustainable student development. The students are exposed to Choice Based Credit System (CBS) and offeredwith elective courses . This motivates the students to excel in curricular and co-curricular activities, therebyhelping the students to acquire employable skills of the programme.

Abundant opportunities are provided to students through electives in curricula enabling them to developinterest in engineering as a career. The students are engaged in self-learning tasks which encourages them toactively participate in Conferences, Symposia, National and International Competitions. Industry orientedprogrammes in collaboration with Kuka Robotics, Pega Systems, Rane NSK Centre for Applied Research,Daimler, Cisco, and others provide real time engineering experience to the students. Value-added coursesconducted by all the departments and Centres of Excellence instill a sense of technological skill development ofthe students.

Chennai Institute of Technology has amenities to provide opportunities for National and InternationalStudent Exchange Programmes with Germany, China, Malaysia and Japan offering global exposure to thestudents with respect abroad countries education and research. The college improves the soft-skills of thestudents by imparting training through placement cell. The students receive skill oriented knowledge byattending internships, projects and field trips. The students exhibit their interest in working with live projects inthe Centers of Excellence round the clock.

Teaching-learning and Evaluation

Teaching and Learning is a sensitive process where each person has a significant role and function. CITadmits Diverse students from many states and it follows unique methods for achieving academic excellence. Asan initial part of it, academic calendar of the institution are prepared before the commencement of the semesteras per the university acdemic schedule. Based on their schooling credentials and their performance in the firstassessment, Weak and Advanced learning capability students are identified.

Teaching methods include traditional teaching combined with advanced 3 types of skill based learningmethods, namely, Participation Learning, Competition Based Learning, Project Based Learning.Participation Learning includes industrial visit both in India and Abroad to countries like, Germany, Chinaand Japan, Guest Lectures, Internships, and student exchange programs. Competition Based Learning like,World Skill Competition held in China, Smart India Hackathon organized by the MHRD, Govt. of India, andindustry based competitions, Baja and e-Baja. Project Based Learning like, CIT-Carnival of Science,Industrial Consultancy, Entrepreneurship/Incubation.

Academic excellence is achieved through the highly qualified and experienced faculty members.Comprehensive mentoring by faculty members and industrial experts to share their ideas. Subsequently,Incubation and Startups strategies are offered to the students to become a successful entrepreneur. The contentdelivery includes preparation of comprehensive lesson plans, question bank, lab manuals, lecture notes, ICTsupported learning like NPTEL, Thor, Code Thantra, Webinar included in regular academic schedule.Academic learning includes teaching, daily tests, assessments, model exam, University Preparatory Class(UPC) and University exams. The Course Outcomes (CO) and Program Outcomes (PO) are achieved throughDirect and Indirect Methods. Direct Method is assessed by internal assessments and University examination.Indirect Methods are specialty of CIT viz. the inputs from Alumni, Industry interaction, and Course end surveywere used to achieve the COs and POs.

Research, Innovations and Extension

Research has always been a pedagogical tool to churn out energy and enthusiasm of a student intoconceptual based learning and creating the comprehensive skills within to look out the world. It lays awonderful platform for the industry and academia to work together for developing innovative products andsolutions. Research at CIT has been one of the backbone to its mission statements, inculcating values anddevelop innovative solutions to address the global challenges and be recognised as an eminent centre forresearch and academia in engineering higher education.

CIT enjoys being Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO), 2F status institute by UGCand MSME Recognized Business Incubation Centre. The institute is also privileged to be vested with theMHRD's Institution Innovation Council (IIC). The departments of ECE and Mechanical Engineering are

CIT has a healthy culture of promotingmultidisciplinary research in promising fields vital to India's growth like Computational Mechanics, RenewableEnergy, Reverse Engineering & Additive Manufacturing, Robotics & Automation, NC Machines, IndustrialIoT, E-Mobility, Data Analytics, Hydrophonic farming, Smart irrigation and agriculture.

Chennai Institute of Technology gives at most importance for the student to be aware of the socialproblems and committed in promoting their holistic development. It helps the students in developing interpersonal relationships, leadership qualities, organizing skill,understanding the life of underprivileged people, help the society in times of need and inculcate the moral andhuman values.

Having acclaimed as an Industry Connected institute, CIT Chennai has earned the trust of Industries andresearch fraternity to offer innovative solutions and development of new products and also pass on the benefitsof such initiatives to the student community as a motivation to their sustainable career growth.

Infrastructure and Learning Resources

Chennai Institute of Technology campus spreads over an area of 10.58 acres comprising of Classrooms,Smart Classrooms, Laboratories, Workshops, Library, Computer Centre, Innovative Learning Program Center,Center of Excellence, Incubation Centre, Auditorium, Seminar Halls, and Gymnasium. CIT has foreignlanguage training centres for students to learn Japanese and German.

CIT has a spacious Central Library with an area of 7500 Sqm with a reading capacity of 150 readers.Digital Library is spread over 858 Sq.m and has equipped with LAN and WiFi Computer systems. The CentralLibrary has various Text books, Reference Books, eBooks, Journals, Magazines, e-Journals, Project Reportsand NPTEL Videos. Central Library has collection of fascinating books includes Encyclopedia, Handbooks,Dictionaries, GATE, Competitive exam books.

CIT has 1088 computers systems with well equipped internet facility working 24X7, 155 Mbps 1:1 leastline from Vodafone and 100 Mbps Jio Wi-Fi internet connection.Video Conferencing/Skype facilities are alsoavailable to interact with experts from remote locations.

The College provides ample facilities for the students to participate in sports and games in College,University, District, State and National levels competitions. Indoor and outdoor games facilities are available inthe campus and effectively used by the students during and after the college hours. The college organized CITTROPY in every year and many colleges are participating in this event. The college has separate gymnasiumfacilities spread over 2128 Sq.f for both boys and girls and Yoga Classes are conducted in both indoor andoutdoor.

CIT organizes the cultural event every year called Takshashila, which is a Techno-Cultural Festival andmany college are participating in this event. The cultural events are conducted in Parthasarathy Auditoriumwith a seating capacity of 1500 and Kavery auditorium with a seating capacity of 300.

Students are being supported by well established mechanism of the institute at all levels. Institutionchannelizes scholarships for the needy and deserved students through government schemes. More than seventhousand students have been benefited from these initiatives in the last five years. CIT on its behalf serves thestudents by distributing Scholarships and freeship by conducting CIT-Scholarship Eligibility Test (CIT-SET), atransparent mechanism through Parthasarathy Educational Trust. More than thousand eight hundred studentsare benefitted in the last five years. CIT integrates capability development and enhancement measures underplacements office by providing guidance for competitive examinations, orientation for career development, softskills and communication skills, Yoga and Meditation sessions as a part of student integral academic activities.The students are also supported to overcome learning difficulties through student-centric remedial and bridgecourses. The institute also provides vocational education and trainings for the needy students in various topics.A well established Anti Ragging committee, Sexual Harassment committee and Grievance RedresalMechanism based on bottom up approach, ensures satisfaction among the students.

The college has well established career counselling, entrepreneurship development and placement cells,for guiding students towards a better career and providing job opportunities through campus interviews. In lasttwo years, more than 75 percentage of students are placed in reputed companies. Higher education cell of theinstitute co-ordinates, monitors and offers essential services for the students who want to do their highereducation. The institute is proud to receive more than ninety awards for sports, NCC, NSS and cultural eventsin the last five years. Many students participate in cultural events to express their talents on various themes inthe grand cultural fest of the institute popularly known as ‘Takshashila’ and also in sports meets. The Alumninetwork of the institute bridges between present students and alumni to explore prospects for institutionalgrowth. Alumni have contributed to their Alma Mater financially and non-financially such as interacting withpresent students, arranging guest lectures and industrial visits.

Governance, Leadership and Management

The Vision of CIT is to be an eminent centre for Academia, Industry and Research by impartingknowledge, relevant practices and inculcating human values to address global challenges through novelty andsustainability. CIT builds a better nation with the motto of Transforming Lives. In CIT, academic andadministrative decisions of the college are taken by the Governing body. It provides requisite leadership togenerate and share knowledge for developing a vibrant society by imparting quality education.

Quality of education is the prime objective of CIT. The quality is assured through the establishment ofInternal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) meetings with Head of the Department and faculty members. IQACinitiated training programs in collaboration with Japanese companies and created job opportunities for 23students in the academic year 2017-18 and 11 students in 2018-19 with highest annual package of 22 lakhs. In2018, four departments have been accredited by NBA and all the academic activities are facilitated by ERP.

Faculty welfare is an important concern to CIT, about 270 faculty members were provided with thefinancial support to attend conferences, workshops and symposiums. CIT has conducted 23 training programsfor the faculty members during the last five years. Academic collaborations include student and facultyexchange programs to various universities and results in excellent project works and publications.

Research and Development (R&D) centre is taking care of all the research activities, encourages to signMoUs with academia/industries. Innovative learning Program (ILP) Centre has been established with the totalspan area of 13000 sq. ft. with 300 latest work stations and licensed industry oriented software. As a researchoutput, over 400 projects from different engineering domains were kept for demo during CITCOS by the

engineering students of all branches. Totally 313 Lakh research grants have been received from industry/non-government bodies in the last five years. Faculty contributions for quality education and research were takeninto consideration for the performance appraisal system, which helps improvising their performance, enhancestheir professional growth and contributes to institutional performance.

Institutional Values and Best Practices

“An Engineer is a solution provider to the problems of the mankind bringing him a balanced life; which hassocial impact; bring development to the nation, at an affordable cost and without creating any harm to theenvironment”. This is CIT chairman Shri. P. SRIRAM’s view on an Engineer. CIT aims to groom students tobe self-reliant, specialists in their chosen discipline, continuous learners, effective communicators, respectful ofdifferent cultures, aware of their social and civic responsibilities, sensitive to gender issues with zero tolerancetowards sexual harassment, women safety and security and environmental consciousness. Great emphasis wastemanagement is followed at CIT, and a complete recycling of water, paper and E-wastes. CIT has initiated therain water harvesting system with commitment to serving the community and the nation. CIT encourages all thefaculty members to use the public transport system offered by the institution. This also serves the country andsociety by reducing the fuel consumption. The institute is a Green campus, the students and faculty areencouraged to plant more trees.

The distinctiveness of CIT starts with its extraordinary performance in the admissions. In 2018 admissionalone, it succeeded the highest admission score, compared to any other institution in a short span of time. CITadopts two best practices, Sculpting Industry Ready Engineers and Deployed Engineers for the SustainableDevelopment of the Society. The process starts with its Funjinia, CATAPULT and CITCOS to encourage thefresher’s in their interested domain and dreams. The Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Innovative Learning ProgramCentre (ILP) consists of various center of excellences which will provide the industrial based learning.Technical competition participation and learning is the crown of CIT in learning process. Many students haveparticipated and won the prizes which demonstrates their skill and technical preparedness. The placement hasincreased with the highest salary of 22 L.

Chennai Institute of Technology ( CIT) is affiliated to Anna University, Chennai, Tamilnaduand follows the curriculum and syllabus framed for affiliated colleges. In order to ensure the effectivecurriculum delivery, CIT adopts its unique innovative methods and systematic strategies. The three phasesof our systematic strategy comprises of Planning, Development & Implementation and Evaluation. It isshown in fig 1.1.

During Planning phase, all departments submit the faculty requirement request, if any, to InternalQuality Assurance Cell (IQAC). IQAC collects the request and also verifies the infrastructure availabilityfor smooth functioning of the forthcoming semester. Based on University academic schedule, Collegeacdemic calendar of events comprising the reopening date, Internal Assessments date and the syllabuscoverage of Internal Assessment and completion date for each unit is framed before the commencement ofthe semester.

During Development phase, elective subjects are finalized and subject willingness of the facultymembers is collected. Based on the competence level of the faculty, subject allocation is done. Thecurriculum delivery includes traditional teaching, collaborative learning, self-learning, competition basedlearning and supportive learning methods.

1.Traditional teaching methods: It includes preparation of detailed lesson plans, question bank,lab manuals, lecture notes, tutorial and assignments and content beyond syllabus based on thefeedback from industry, alumni and previous year academic performance of the students.

2.Collaborative Learning: Our Institution arranges industrial visits and Guest Lectures everysemester per class to bridge the gap between industry expectation and Institution. Internship andindustrial projects are arranged for the students to avail practical exposure.

3.Self Learning: This practice is introduced among the students by implementing mandatoryregistration and enrollment for minimum of one NPTEL course per semester. Students are alsoencouraged to use various online portals like MOOC, Infytq, TCS Campus commune, HackerRank,HackerEarth and TechGig.

4.Competition Based Learning: Students are motivated to participate in national and internationalcompetitions such as TCS Code Vita, Enquode, Innoverse, Inframind, EngiNX, HackQuest, ZohoClir Trix, Google Code Jam, Capgemini Tech Challenge, Accenture Innovation jockey, Code Diva,Honeywell Technology Challenge, L & T Techgium, Valeo Innovations, Tech Gig Code Gladiator,Smart India Hackathon, Digi Fest etc.

5.Supportive Learning: a.UPC -University Preparation class Students are categorized as slowand advanced learners and preparing them to face university exams successfully bypractising different types of questions such as expected university questions, theory basedquestion, two mark questions and twisted questions, problematic questions, case studiesrespectively. b. Peer learning, c. Project based learning, d. Activity based learning and e. ICTsupported learning.

During Implemenation and Evaluation phase, the various tools such as Subject Teacher Meeting,Class Teacher Meeting, Common Subject Meeting, Parents Teacher Meeting, Class Committee Meeting,Online feedback and Internal Assessments play a major role in effective curriculum delivery andevaluation. Addressing Gender related issues

Boys and girls are given equal preference in all aspects such as Admission, Curricular, Co-curricular,Extra-curricular and Training & Placement activities. The institution organizes many events through Women Empowerment cell like Women’s day andWe2Aspire. Girl students are motivated to participate in competitions such as Youth Talk, ChennaiInternational Youth Festival and Miss Takshashila. We also encourage women in sports. In order to giveopportunity for girl students to apply their knowledge to solve real world challenges, Neoteric CodeHackathon Contest is organized by the institution in which the participation of girl students is mademandatory. Internal Complaint Committee is constituted which take care of various issues like Women’srights & Security and creates congenial atmosphere free from gender discrimination and sexualharassment. Thus CIT represents the need and importance of gender equality for the improvement of thesociety and hence no gender related issues have been aroused in the campus so far.

Addressing Environment and Sustainability related issues

The institution has installed 300 kW solar panels on the roof tops of the main building and hostelbuildings. Tube lights are replaced with LEDs and CFLs to save energy. Apart from these green initiatives,the institute provides intense education and training to the students through the establishment of Centre ofExcellence on New Energy.Water recycling and Rain water harvesting are done to conserve water forenvironmental protection. Usage of battery operated vehicle and bicycles inside the campus, effectiveutilization of college buses for transport and tree plantation are some of the initiatives to make the campuspollution free. Paperless office is practiced by sending announcements and circulars through e-mails.Similarly measures are taken to make the campus plastic free.

Food waste represents a major sustainability challenge with environmental, economical, social andhealth implications. In our institution, Deputy Wardens and the faculty members are assigned supervisingduties during mess timings to ensure that students are not wasting their food and the wastage should notexceed 8kg per day. The wasted food is then converted to bio-gas and used.The awareness of Environmentconsciousness is created among the students by participating in Shore line cleaning, Eradication of SeemaiKaruvelam tree and supporting Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. As part of curriculum, the course“Environmental Science and Engineering” is made mandatory for second year students.

Addressing Human Values and Professional Ethics related issues

In order to inculcate moral and social values, the courses such as Professional Ethics inEngineering and Principles of Management are available in the curriculum. The various social activitiesorganized by the institution like Blood donation camp, Dental camp, Flood Relief, adoption of village,Rallies for awareness on Traffic rules and safety through NSS and YRC also contribute to inculcate humanvalues.

Slow Learners

1.Slow learners are well-motivated to study well without any burden. Simple home-work assignmentsare periodically given to them.

2.Slow learners are handled with more tolerance and are endowed with smart training approach.3.The slow-learners are taught through real-life examples. Also student are given short-cuts/symbols

such as acronym to remember complicated terms.4.A unique program named “University Preparatory Class (UPC)” is conducted for 15 days at the

end of semester where special attention is given to slow learners through special monitoring. Theirmarks are recorded in an A3 sheet and then assessed.

2.5 Evaluation Process and Reforms 2.5.1 Reforms in Continuous Internal Evaluation(CIE) system at the institutional level

Institute’s primary objective, as stated in the mission statement is on strengthening teachinglearning process. The institute has taken several measures to increase the efficiency and effectiveness ofthe system through continuous internal evaluation since evaluation in a continuous mode will help toimprove regularity and participation of the students. In each semester two unit test and one model examin theory subjects and one model examination in practical are conducted. Internal assessment schedule isgiven in advance and is conducted centrally similar to University Examinations. For practical subjectscontinuous evaluation procedure is followed. evaluation reform of the university is followed througheffective implementation and those initiated by institute are ensured by strict compliance of process andprocedure devised / suggested by the university in order to follow the continuous evaluation system.

Inorder to implement the evaluation reforms introduced by the University the institute has taken thefollowing measures: separate exam coordinators are appointed from each department to conduct the examssmoothly. The examination committee meets at regular interval to review and to discuss all theexamination processes. At Institute level, effective implementation of tutorial and internal assessment testtakes place and results are declared within one week. The evaluated answer sheets are distributed to thestudents to see their answer scripts and to discuss with respective faculty members. Assessment test is

Final year project work is evaluated by external examiners. Guest lectures are conducted in thecutting edge topics with the relevant academicians and industry personnel to give an exposure to thestudents on latest technologies. Practical examinations are conducted based on the syllabus prescribed theAnna University. An internal squad comprising of senior faculty members is appointed to conductUniversity theory examination smoothly. Attendance and marks of the students are entered periodically.The credit system for each course is introduced for UG degrees. As per the University directives theInstitute appoints examiners to conduct practical examinations and viva voce examinations. The Institutesends its faculty members as examiners for evaluating semester answer scripts to other affiliated colleges.

University regulations, curricula and syllabi of various programmes offered by the Institute are madeavailable in the Institute and the University website. The regulations contain the necessary details of theevaluation process. The Officer-In-Charge of the Examination Cell of the Institute has prepared anInstruction Manual as per the guidelines of the Controller of Examination of Anna University and copiesare given to all departments. The newly admitted students are updated about the attendance requirements,pass mark requirements and grading systems for the internal assessments during the induction program.The students are encouraged to clarify their doubts by discussing with the faculty members and principal.

Internal marks are allotted based on the assessment test marks by university. Students are counseled by thefaculty mentor, and remedial classes and retest are conducted for students who have failed in theexaminations and those who are absent for internal exams due to genuine reason.

Grievance regarding semester examinations conducted by Anna University is handled as per universityproceedings.

Re-evaluation: Students can apply for re-evaluation of their answer scripts within a week from thedeclaration of results if they are not satisfied with their results. The results of re-evaluation will beannounced as per the university norms.

Challenge Evaluation: A student can apply for challenge evaluation within a week after theannouncement of the revaluation results. If the student wins the challenge university favors students withproper award of marks and the challenging evaluation fee is refunded to the students.

The following are the some of the discrepancies in the University Examination for which letters have beenforwarded through the Chief Superintendent of the college to the Controller of the Examination, AnnaUniversity :-

1. Change of name in the student hall ticket.2. Withdraw from the examination to avoid arrear due to unexpected health concerns .3. withdrawal from the examination to avoid arrear to facilitate student exchange or internship to

foreign organization/ institutions on unavaidable circumstance of changing the dates.4.· If 2 different arrear papers/regular papers appear on the same date to the same student.5.· Out of syllabus in the question papers and discrepancy.6.When results of the students are withheld.

If the students indulge in any kind of malpractices, severe action is taken by the exam cell after discussingthe matter with the Chief Superintendent. The examination cell is fully involved in dealing withexamination related grievances.

The cell brings the grievances to the knowledge of the Chief Superintendent immediately and suitableremedial action. Strict instruction is given to students to maintain punctuality and late comers are notpermitted to enter the exam hall after the stipulated time.

The letters related to examination grievances are sent to the Controller of Examinations, Anna University,immediately, hence, the grievances are dealt in a time-bound manner efficiently by the Examination Cell.

As soon as the results of the University Examinations are announced, cross-checking is done by theExamination Cell to assure that the grievance redressal has been carried out in an effective manner; if not,a faculty is sent to the University immediately to follow it up.

2.5.4 The institution adheres to the academic calendar for the conduct of CIE

The Process for preparation of Academic Calendar and its adherence are shown in Figure. Based on theacademic calendar, an action plan for the semester is prepared at the college level .

Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) discuss and plan various academic, co-curricular, extra-curricularand social activities in accordance with university calendar. All these activities are included in academiccalendar of institute.

Technical events like Technical symposium at National level, expert lectures, science exhibition, culturalactivities like Thakshasila. All departments prepare their academic calendar in accordance with Instituteacademic calendar. Various activities such as industrial visit, expert lecture, seminars/ workshops/conferences, department social programs etc are included in department academic calendar.

Teaching plan is prepared by each teacher which adheres to the academic calendar of institute. InternalQuality Assurance Cell (IQAC) has standard procedure of fortnight monitoring that ensures smoothconduction of lectures and practical sessions.

Internal examinations are conducted by all the departments on the dates planned in academic calendar.Results of internal assessment are declared and communicated to students within a scheduled time. Everydepartment conducts project progress review and seminar presentations as per standard procedure set byeach department according to academic calendar of department.

Review meeting conduct by IQAC and report submitted to principal, to ensure the adherence of academiccalendar.

College calendar of events planned for every semester of academic year which includes assessment test,various events like Guest lectures, Conferences, FDP, Symposium, Sports activity, Professional associationactivities etc.

Maintenance of Course files:

Subject allotment is done based on Faculty competency and interest. For each course, a course file isprepared by the concerned faculty. The course file consists of following items.

Detailed lesson plans for each course are prepared for the whole syllabus by allocating 45 / 60 lecturesas per the teaching scheme prescribed by the university before the commencement of the semester and it isduly approved after careful examination by the Head of the Department and made available to the students.The lesson plan encompasses the learning outcomes and the assessment of outcomes.

Extension Activities in the Neighborhood Community

Chennai Institute of Technology gives at most importance for the student to be aware of the socialproblems and committed in promoting holistic development. CIT promotes the students to establish contactwith the neighborhood communities and interact with them to explore the opportunities for social work. Ithelps in developing interpersonal relationships, leadership qualities, organizing skill, understanding the lifeof underprivileged people, help the society in times of need and inculcate the moral and human valuesamong our students. The students are given two weeks duration every semester to involve in the socialactivities. Such students give seminar and share their hands on experience to other students to createawareness and insights about the program/activity done. This makes our students to develop their socialresponsibility, service orientation and many more. Dengue awareness program is conducted to theneighborhood communities so that the students will be aware of the ill-effects of the water borne diseases.World water awareness program is organized to make aware of water conservation and minimize waterwastages by the students to the neighborhood communities.

Tobacco awareness program is conducted to give awareness to the students and the nearby villagesabout the deadly diseases caused by the usage Tobacco. As part of the worldwide campaign against AIDS,World AIDS day was conducted along with the staff and students. GO GREEN Walkathon programinvolves many of the staff and students walking for the noble cause of greener environment.

The sustainable development of the society depends on the youngsters holistic thinking and vision ofthe society. CIT is aware of this need and involves its students for their holistic development. InternationalYoga day is celebrated for the mental and health benefits and its stability. The ambitious program of ourPrime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi Ji, and to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary our Bharat PithaMahatma Gandhi Ji, Swachh Bharat is the trump-card for the resurgent India. CIT strongly believe thatevery citizen is responsible to make clean and green India to ensure the participation of every student in theprogram. Temple cleaning, blood donation, eye-screening, tree plantation, Karuvela tree cutting and floodrelief camps participated by the students to promote health and holistic development. The Marina beachcleaning camp was organized by NSS unit of CIT. A total of 4km of beach was cleaned by studentvolunteers. They participated with many placards to create awareness to the people.

Chennai Institute of Technology campus extends over an area of 10.58 acres with an usage areaof 1,76,699 Sq.m. comprising classrooms with proper ventilation, numerous Laboratories, Workshops,Smart classrooms,Library and digital library, Computer Centre, Innovative learning programme center,Centers of excellence, Incubation Cell, Auditorium, Seminar halls, Indoor and Outdoor stadiums.TheInstitution have policies for conception and enhancement of infrastructure in order to endorse a goodteaching-learning environment. The need for infrastructure is examined regularly based on the need ofstudents and prerequisite of the departments.

The classrooms of respective departments consist of essential provisions to enable the use of LCDProjector and Laptop/Computer for Teaching-Learning process. The College has three seminar halls withLCD projectors, computers with internet connectivity and public address system. These halls are utilizedfor co-curricular activities such as Seminars, Guest lectures, Workshops, Symposiums, Conferences andFaculty development programs. In addition to this, our college has an air-conditioned Auditorium with1500 seating capacity for conducting joint technical activities.

The college has well equipped laboratories as per university norms and is maintained periodically.Apart from curriculum,the institution has seventeen center of excellence which includes Kuka RoboticsLaboratory, 3D Printing Laboratory, New Energy Laboratory, Industrial Automation Laboratory, IOT Lab,Pega Laboratory, Rane NSK Centre for Applied Research, Daimler lab, Cisco Lab etc.The Collegeprovides ample opportunities for students to learn foreign languages namely Japanese and German .

The College has 1088 computers and all those are connected through LAN . Video Conferencingand Skype facilities are also available to interact with experts from remote locations. 4.3 IT Infrastructure 4.3.1 Institution frequently updates its IT facilities including Wi-Fi

The College has a well equipped internet labworking 24X7. CIT has 155 Mbps 1:1 least linefrom Vodafone and 100 Mbps Wi-Fi internet from Jio. The internet can be accessed from more than 1000desktop computers throug LAN and WiFi.The IT Centre of CIT supports an ‘Institute Wide fiber opticnetwork and wireless that connects all the Academic Departments, Hostels, Library and other Collegefacility centres to the Centrlaized Server.The Centre provides System Administration and Technicalsupport which includes software Intallation, Network monitoring (both wired & wireless), Internetconnection and Digital library etc.It has 10 number of servers with latest configuration and licensedapplication softwares.

The computer systems are upgraded periodically. As per the syllabus updation, the requiredsoftware is purchased and license will be renewed. The internet bandwidth connectivity is upgraded basedon the requirement to provide the quality internet connectivity . Wi-Fi is provided for the entire campusand it is upgraded often. Fire wall and Anti-virus software are installed to ensure better security.

A dedicated team with in-house staff is formed to take care of the IT and related needs of thecampus such as Software Development, Hardware and Networking maintenance , Website designing andhosting and SMS solutions, etc. The speed of the internet is upgraded as follows

Chennai Institute of Technology has the policy for infrastructure maintenance as specified by thestatutory bodies both in terms of quantity and quality. CIT provides the best infrastructure to all itsdepartments and other functional areas to ensure the infrastructure needs and the requirement of teaching-learning process. The Infrastructure Maintenance policy of CIT is ensuring its quality and cost, upgradation from time to time, proper accounting and safe guarding by providing inventory on eachequipment and maintaining asset register, upkeep of the equipment through regular cleaning, preventiveand corrective maintenance including annual maintenance contracts (AMC), insurance against damage andtheft.

In order to ensure the adequacy of the infrastructure including land, buildings, equipment,computer hardware and software, the norms of the statutory bodies like University Grants Commission

Daily maintenance:

Lab technician checks the working condition of the equipment’s/systems on daily basis.Every day cleaning of equipments and work tables are done by the lab technicians.Floor cleaning of labs are done on daily basis by housekeeping department of the college.The batteries of the UPS are cleaned to remove dust and prevent corrosion.

Weekly maintenance:

Floor mopping of labs are done twice in a week by housekeeping department of the college.Maintenance of battery & UPS in Digital signal processing Laboratory and Computer NetworkLaboratory is carried out.The fault is identified with the help of the lab assistants; weekly maintenance report is prepared andsent to the manager for action.

Monthly maintenance:

The monthly maintenance report is generated in which the current condition of the equipments,consumables and furniture are mentioned and submitted to the principal.After checking by a scrutinizing committee, the issues identified are rectified.Every month UPS in-charge checks the water level, voltage level and backup of the UPS.Calibrations of equipments are done and a separate file is maintained containing the reports.

Yearly maintenance:

Scrap items in the laboratories are identified with the concern of the lab in charges, HOD andinspection committee.After decision by the inspection committee members the scrap items are sent to the scrap yard.

The working conditions of the equipments are periodically checked.The students are given instructions in handling the equipments before doing the experiments.Laboratory manual is given to the students which include Do’s and Don’ts of the laboratory, list ofexperiments and the procedure of doing the experiments.Stock register is maintained in laboratories and audits are conducted by stock verificationcommittee to check the availability and working of the equipments.Suitable thickness of the wire based on current rating is used in the fuses to avoid themalfunctioning.The working condition of the ICs is checked using IC testerUPS back up is provided for all system based laboratoriesRegular Antivirus software updating for proper working of the systems

Breakdown maintenance

Minor repairs are carried out by the lab technicians.When there is a Major repair, service report is obtained from industry person.Approval for Service of equipments is obtained from HOD, Principal, and fault is rectified.

Service register is maintained in each laboratory.Breakdown maintenance of the personal computer is done by Computer Maintenance Cell of theCollege.

Infrastructure Maintenance

Class rooms / Laboratories / Internet facilities are maintained based on the students feedback throughthe Class committee meetings which held 3 times in a semester. This information is conveyed to theauthorities concerned and rectified.

Library Maintenance

Adequate number of text and reference books are maintained by getting requirement from the facultymember.

Housekeeping

Students and faculty provide feedback on various aspects of housekeeping at class committee meetingsand other occasions like department meetings, HOD meetings which are passed on to the maintenancedepartment and problems are sorted out.

Technical Committee

The professional societies like IEEE, ISTE, IETE, SAE, CSI, ICTACT, ICI student Chapters, RoboticsClub, Agri Club are functioning in the college which conducts regular programmes. In addition, everydepartment has a student association. The technical committees helps students stay connected to the widespread network of research groups. The committees inculcate research attitude among students byorganizing events like paper and poster presentations, project competitions and conferences. Students areencouraged and guided to participate in various competitions at State, National and International level.

Sports Committee

The Sports Committee shows leadership in organizing various sports activities on and off campus;coordinates and promotes participation of students in inter-college sports festivals; plans and organizesfinancially self-sustainable inter-college sports activities; ensure facilities and equipment are safe, clean,and in good, usable condition at all times. The men and women teams won medals in many sports eventsorganized at National level and State level. Our students have won prizes in athletic events, Chess,Badminton, Cricket tournaments conducted by Anna University and other engineering colleges.

Cultural Committee

The Cultural Committee actively coordinates and participates in several prominent competitions. Thiscommittee also coordinates the annual cultural event TAKSHASHILA, the inter-collegiate Techno culturalextravaganza, consists of both off stage and on stage events which help students to realize and showcasethe plethora of their talents, bringing the creativity of students to the fore. Every year, programmes such asPongal Thiruvizha, Margazhi Utsavam, Christmas celebration and Ugadhi celebration are organized by thecultural club. Our students participate and win prizes in many cultural competitions organized by variousreputed institutes.

Social Committee

NSS committee seeks to integrate social responsibility with personality development. These committeesare active in organizing several extension activities like Tree Plantations, Blood Donation camps, SwachBharat campaign etc. For healthcare services, our NSS unit conducts camps in association with ApolloHospitals, Agarwal Eye Hospital, Annai Medical College Hospital, Sri Muthukumaran Medical CollegeHospital and Saveetha Dental College in Chennai. Awareness on the importance of rain water harvesting,preventing water-borne diseases, First Aid and “Say No to Polythene Bags? are also done.

The Chennai Institute of Technology is approved by All India Council for Technical Education(AICTE), New Delhi and affiliated to Anna University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu was established in the year2010 with prime objective of providing quality technical education with adequate industrial exposure tocater the needs of the youth with its innovative teaching methods. The institution has a perspective plan for development. Modernization of the existing facilities,implementation of new ventures for Centre of excellence and R&D, expansion of infrastructure by meansof laboratories, library resources, class rooms, meeting halls and sporting facilities are the usual criteria inthe annual plan of the institution. Principal’s subsequent meetings with the top management and withthe Governing Council ensure that all the information and suggestions reach from bottom to top and fromtop to bottom in a smooth fashion. 6.1.2 The institution practices decentralization and participative management

Response:

The institution defines the decentralization in working through delegation of authority. Personnel atdifferent level implement the decisions.

Top-level managers are responsible for controlling and overseeing the entire institution. It includes theChairman, Governing council and Principal. The Governing Council supports the Chairman with regard tobroad guidelines, policies and framework for the improvement of quality education in the institution. Themanagement through the Principal involves the faculty members in various activities related to thedevelopment of the Institution. The Principal heads the academic and administrative activities of theInstitute, forms various committees and assigns responsibilities.

Middle-level managers act as an intermediary between top-level management and low-level management.It includes Head of the Departments (HOD), Librarian, Physical Education Director who are executinginstitutional plans.

Low-level managers include faculty, non-teaching staff and others help the middle level managers bycoordinating the activities delegated to them.

In all academic and non-academic activities, institution is following participative management forimplementation of all its decisions.

Case Study

As an affiliated institution the programmes are bound to follow the curriculum set by the university.Principal insisted to identify the curricular gap and take measures to bridge it by supplementing the

The Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam Innovative Learning Program Centre(ILP) consists of various centres of excellence which will provide the industrial based learningrequirements as to achieve all are industry ready engineers. Chennai Institute of Technology has got various strategic plans for implementation and achievesexcellence in all aspects such as academic, placements and research. In order to attain global standard inEngineering, institution needs a freedom for curriculum design which could be done only after gettingAutonomous status. Hence the management council has a strategic plan which includes getting NAACaccreditation and Permanent Affiliation for all UG & PG programs. Research activities have beenestablished through Centre of Excellence in various fields. Personality Development Program for students,Faculty Development Program (FDP), research and consultancy projects are planned and executed toachieve the goal as recommended by IQAC.

As a case study, self learning practice introduced in this institution is explained as below.

In order to encourage self Learning, Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Innovative Learning program isestablished with facility of 13,000 sq.ft with wifi, audio, video, computers with latest configuration andlicensed software for both academic and research purpose. Advanced learners are encouraged to studytheir area of interest on self-learning basis by attending experiment sessions in the Centers of Excellence.

Students develop the products and startups that are relevant to social and technical importance. Manystudents have participated in the Smart India Hackathon, Baja, e-Baja, e-Vehicle, Automated GuidedVehicle, World Skill Competition, Code Vita, Code Thantra, and Code Gladiator. More than 500 studentssuccessfully got NPTEL certificates.

As an evidence of success, CIT students won prizes in national and international competitions whichdemonstrate their skill and technical preparedness. These technical enhancements help our students toexcel in academics, placement and research. The quality circle formed around ILP, comprising of seniorand junior students is spreading a culture of self learning in our campus.

The institution had begun with one main block in the year 2010 and witnessing upward journey inconstructing and expanding infrastructure facilities as shown in Table 6.1

Governing body

The management stands as an asset to the system and stakeholders. The Governing Council takes theresponsibility of monitoring and implementation of activities in the strategic plan of institution. CIT buildsa better nation through “Transforming Lives” being the motto of the institute. Continuous and meticulousefforts are ensured to maintain quality in both academic and administrative levels.

Administrative setup

Principal is the chairperson of administrative and academic activities of the institution. Head of theDepartments take the responsibility of handling above activities of their respective department. They areentitled to take decisions as per the needs of the situations in exigencies and get them ratified by the Headof the Institution subsequently at a later stage. Based on the experience and the expertise of the facultymembers, students’ team leads have been identified to lead different teams which are functioningeffectively which is monitored by year coordinator and class advisors. The Principal, HODs, Yearcoordinator, class advisors and students team leaders are sanctioned impress amount, for seeing theexecution of multiple events scheduled. They can act spontaneously for moulding / grooming the membersof their teams and they have been identified as second stage leaders.

Recruitment Policies

The Head of the department assesses the need for additional faculty based on workload calculationand specialization requirement. Once the approval is obtained from Principal, advertisement isreleased in popular English and vernacular dailies stating the vacancies and the basic requirementsfor applying.Whenever there is a vacancy in the departments, the request is sent to the management afterdiscussions with the Principal. The applications are shortlisted based on the number of vacanciesand the minimum qualifications, candidates are called for interview on a 1:5 ratio.The interview board is constituted with a subject expert drawn from Anna University. The othermembers in the board include the Principal, and the Head of the department concerned.

Promotion Policies

At the end of every year, a performance appraisal is conducted for all faculties.The self-appraisal form is filled in by all faculty members, with endorsement by the HoD.The faculty is assessed based on the Anna university results produced in the subjects handled bythem, the feedback received from students, participation in FDPs, workshops, publications ininternational/national journals, projects guided, self- up gradation activities and the faculty’sinvolvement and contribution in student/ department/ institution level activities.

Grievance Redressal Mechanism

Enquires the issues from representatives of the students forwarded by the Principal. Chennai Institute of Technology has implemented many activities initiated by several professionalbodies and committees. One of the prominent bodies is the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC).Members of IQAC have initiated the Outcome Based Education (OBE). The concept of outcome basededucation has been brought in all departments with the active participation. The faculty and students aregiven awareness on the importance of Course Outcomes (COs), Program Outcomes (POs), ProgramSpecific Outcome (PSO) and Program Educational Objectives (PEO). IQAC and Department AdvisoryCommittee (DAC) help in evaluating the achievement of POs, PSOs and PEOs. Hence, by adopting OBE,the college has got NBA accreditation for four departments in the academic year 2018-19. Internal Audit is performed by Accounts Manager deputed from Parthasarathy SeeniammalEducational Trust office periodically. During the self-study phase of the Academic Audit, faculties look at the key activities that regularlyimprove the quality of teaching and learning. Faculty members organize their work and use data to makedecisions and thus identify initiatives for improvement. The Academic Audit model also involves peerreview called the Academic Audit Committee (AAC). This IQAC team reviews a self-study report of theprograms and prepares report that includes commendations, affirmations and recommendations forcontinued improvement. AAC reviews the activities before commencement of classes, collection of subjectwillingness from faculty, subject assigning to faculty members, submission of staff requirement (if any)request to the Principal, electives selection from the students, and audit of course files. In addition,activities such as laboratory manual preparation, academic calendar, time table preparation and data booktransfer will also be reviewed.

The IQAC enhanced a unique Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam Innovative learning Program (ILP) Centre. The ILPhas spanning area of 13000 sq.ft was developed in the year 2016-17 with 300 latest work stations andnecessary licensed industry oriented software facilities. ILP is aimed at diversifying the teaching learningprocess and its environment with creativeness and innovation by involvement of students in varioustechnical and non-technical activities to realize their skills, talent and passion. The ILP facility will aid inimparting knowledge and lay platform for Product Development, Industrial Projects, conducting Trainingprograms for core companies, Research Publications and Patents and Business incubation for startups.

IQAC conducts internal academic audit twice in a semester and takes appropriate remedial actionsto improve the quality of technical education. As Faculty plays a major role in providing quality technicaleducation, review of quality of the faculty member is done twice, one at the beginning of the semester andother at the end of the semester to improve the teaching learning process.

It insists faculty members to participate in faculty development program, workshops, conference andresearch. Faculty members must attend FDP in order to be abreast of the recent trends in technology andcreate an environment to appraise the students with new technologies. It then audits whether the facultymembers incorporate suggested improvements to ensure quality deliverables. Faculty members must matchup the pace of their deliverables to meet the students’ requirements. Lecture plans must be scheduled tocomplete syllabus in time. CIT adopts its own total quality management system for CIT’s growth to become global hub ofeducation and training. The Japanese word ‘kaizen’ insists that continuous improvement should happenon an incremental basis. This process will enable the institution to maintain sustainable futuristicinstitution. This could be understood from the slow and steady growth of CIT in all aspects that includesadmission process, academic performance and placement activities in the last 3 years.

In 2018 alone, more number of students with highest admission score has been admitted into theinstitution. Thus the quality of admitted students keep on increasing in the last three years, which is theachievement of self financing institute of Tamilnadu in the current scenario of Engineering Colleges. It isautomatically reflected in its academic excellence through its unique training programs and industrialconnectivity.

The growth of the infrastructure of the campus is also in upward direction. 32 Smart class rooms, Videoconferencing hall and Digital library with audio and video facilities were established in the year 2017.Internet connectivity with 20 Mbps in the year 2014 is improved to 155 Mbps in the year 2016. Also 100Mbps wifi connectivity with access points covering entire campus is provided in the campus from the year2016.

Foreign languages such as Japanese and German were taught to students from the year 2018 to provideinternational placements. 44 Students are placed in Japan based company with annual package of Rs.22lakhs.

Gym is updated with latest equipments in the year 2018. Canteen facility in the year 2013 is improvedto Cafetaria in 2015, Cafe Coffee day in 2016, Meat and Eat and Arusuvai food court in 2017 withincreased number of food items such as fresh juice, sugar cane juice and chat items.

Genset is upgraded to 250 kVA from 100 kVA in 2016 and 250 kW solar panel is installed in the year2018.

LAN speed is upgraded to 1000 Mbps from 100 Mbps in 2015. TCS ion zone with 532 systems to conductonline exams is formed in the year 2016.

According to Union Minister of State for Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Prakash Javedkar, 62million tons of waste is generated annually in the country at present, out of which 5.6 million tons is plasticwaste, 0.17 million tons is biomedical waste, hazardous waste generation is 7.90 million tons per annumand 15 lakh tons is e-waste. He added that only about 75-80 per cent of the municipal waste gets collectedand only 22-28 per cent of this waste is processed and treated. The new rules have mandated the sourcesegregation of waste in order to channelize the waste to wealth by recovery, reuse and recycle. Wastegenerators would now have to segregate waste into three streams - Biodegradables, Dry (Plastic, Paper,metal, Wood, etc.) and Hazardous waste (diapers, napkins, mosquito repellants, cleaning agents etc.).Institutional generators, have been directly made responsible for segregation and sorting the waste andmanage in partnership with local bodies. In case of an event, or gathering of more than 100 persons, theorganizer will have to ensure segregation of waste at source and handing over of segregated waste to wastecollector or agency, as specified by the local authority.

At CIT, everyday 10 kg of solid waste mainly from dry leaves are generated. The wastes are segregated asBio-degradable and Plastic wastes. The Bio-degradable wastes are collected and converted into manure bythe natural process. Then the manure is distributed into the local community for its use in the farm land.

Faculty members are instructed to reuse the single side used papers for writing and printing works in alldepartments. The paper wastes are completely recycled. The institute has signed MoU with the IndiaTobacco Company Limited (ITC Ltd.). At first the paper wastes are collected and converted into sheets.Then, the sheets are made into big bundles and sent to ITC regularly. The very less amount of generatedplastic waste is collected and given to the vendor on a regular basis. Metal and wooden wastes are storedand given to authorized scrap agents for further processing.

Waste Water Treatment

Chennai Institute of Technology is aware of the societal need and water conservation for the environmentalprotection. So the institute follows the complete water recycling process and the steps involved are asfollows.

Plant description

Initially the waste water is collected in a collection tank and aerated in the aeration tank. After theaeration process, it is flocculated using coagulant and sent to the sedimentation tank. And then, the water ispressure filtered and sent to the distribution tank. The water is used for gardening and watering the plants.

E-Waste Management

Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, said that normshave been made more stringent on E-Waste management and reflect the government’s commitment toenvironmental governance. Rules will bring the producers under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR),along with targets. Producers have been made responsible for collection of E-waste and for its exchange.The bulk consumers must collect the items and hand them over to authorized recyclers. Ministryemphasizes that various producers can have a separate Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) andensure collection of E-waste, as well as its disposal in an environmentally sound manner. The Ministrypointed out that the role of State Governments has been also introduced to ensure safety, health and skilldevelopment of the workers involved in dismantling and recycling operations.

Awareness is created among the students about E-waste management. E-waste from labs is properlycollected and is given to the licensed recycler, reused wherever possible, donated and sold if possible. Non-working computers, monitors, and printers are discarded and scrapped on a systematic basis. Some partsuseful for other systems are kept aside for future use. The E-waste trash box has been kept and the e-wastematerials are collected and disposed through vendors for recycling.

As per the new rules, it has been advised that the bio-degradable waste should be processed, treatedand disposed of through composting or bio-methanation within the premises as far as possible and theresidual waste shall be given to the waste collectors or agency as directed by the local authority. CIT hasinitiated the complete bio-waste management system by installing bio-gas production unit in the campus,thereby serves the nation on energy conservation grounds. An awareness campaign in association withlocal communities, NGOs, and students have been planned to push for better implementation of thesewaste management tools. There is great demand for water in an Engineering College for laboratories for use in experiments,drinking facilities, cleaning purposes, for horticulture purpose etc. Water is used for drinking purposes,canteen, toilets, laboratory, and gardening. The institute ensures that the water wastage is minimized at anoptimal level by regular inspection of taps and pipes.

Chennai Institute of Technology has initiated the rain water harvesting system with commitment toserving the community and the nation. Rain water can be collected from roof top of the institutionalbuildings and hostel buildings, the water collected is redirected to a deep pit. The harvested water usedmainly for the purpose of ground water recharge to overcome the groundwater depletion. Three feetdiameter and twelve feet long well like structures have been created and the rain water is collected in thepits.

The water is treated in RO plant which has a capacity of 2000 L/h. Gardens are watered usingdrip/sprinkler irrigation system to save water. Displays of signboard and posters are done for the creationof awareness in Hostels and College campus.

The illumination and ventilation in classrooms are adequate considering natural light and air velocitypresent. The noise level in the campus is well within the limit i.e. below 50 dB at daytime. 3. The Context

Everyday morning at around 7:50 a.m. motivational Bharathiar song on MANATHIL URUTHI VENDUM(WE SHOULD HAVE FIRMNESS IN MIND) is broadcasted through the college public address system.This song emphasizes on the gender equity, women empowerment, truth alone triumphs and motivates thestudents for their academic performance.

Every day morning at 7:55 a.m. before the commencement of class, one student has to come to classroomdais and deliver any current topic or technological advances in the name of concept of the day. Thisbrainstorms the students to get to know about the recent trends in the technology and new inventions. Thispersuades the students to overcome the stage fear, induces readability and taper their skills.

In order to excel in the academics, CIT prepare the students for their semester exams through theUniversity Preparation Class (UPC). Through UPC, the expected questions, critical questions, case studies,important aspects of the examination, and time management have been elaborately explained and thestudents are trained well. UPC gives much practice and confident to the students and prepared them to facethe semester examination.

4. The Practice

WE SHOULD HAVE FIRMNESS IN MIND, song written by Chinnaswami Subramania Bharathi, alsoknown as Bharathiar was a pioneer of modern Tamil poetry and is considered one of the greatest Tamilliterary figures of all time. Bharathi's influence on Tamil literature is phenomenal. Bharathi, was prolific inhis output. He covered political, social and spiritual themes. The songs and poems composed by Bharathihave become staples in the literary and musical repertoire of Tamil artistes throughout the world. He pavedthe way for modern blank verse.

The prayer song is a very good motivational song as well as insists the importance of women in life. Thesong describes the good habits for the students in common, and emphasizes on the gender equity andwomen empowerment. The song comprises that, the students should have firmness in mind, sweetness inwords with nobility in thoughts, let all dreams come true and quickly too. We should have wealth and

pleasure. We should have fame in this world. The world is great, let the eyes be open and always bedetermined in the work. Women should be independent and God has to protect them. The soil should befertile and let us feel the heaven here. Let the truth prevail.

CONCEPT OF THE DAY is the opportunity given to the students everyday to come to the stage to deliverany current topic or technological advances. The students identify the topics/talk on the recentdevelopments from journals/magazines/social media etc. The topics vary from technology advancementinto social issues. Technology awareness includes software/hardware into electric/fuel cell/solar celloperated vehicles. Topics like, 3D printing in construction and reverse engineering, industrial automation,and robotics, renewable energy, Internet of things were also the topics of interests. National Priorities suchas, Skill in India, Make in India, Electric cars, Digital India are some of the topics students used to talkduring their concept of the day. The students also talk about the technology that kindles their innovationideas and motivates them to pursue on socio-economic issues. Once, a student spoke about assembling themobiles by student themselves, emphasized on the need, market availability of the raw materials, and easeof expertise. This practice helps to eliminates stage fear, know new things, improves communication skills,identifying the field of interest, inspire other students, and overcome the shyness, The important aspect ofthe engineering education is to aware the recent developments and applying them for the need of society.CIT is aware of this need, implements as a special practice and included this as the Concept of the Day intheir daily schedule of the classes.

The important objective of a student is to accomplish the excellence in academics. CIT is aware this primeneed and introduced UPC in their preparation for the university exams. The specialty of UPC is bridgingthe gap between Advanced Learners and Slow Learners (identified through their academic performance inthe previous assessments). These students will teach, clear doubts and discuss the subjects through the peerlearning process. After the peer discussion process, test will be conducted and corrections made on thesame day to check the improvement in understanding of the concepts, answering capacity (clear and crisp)and instructions are provided accordingly. UPC in general provides the opportunity for the students toknow the expected questions, to write the crisp and clear answers, how to answer the twisted questions andtime management in examination. By conducting UPC the students get motivated and become confident toface the semester examination.

5. Evidence of Success

CIT students are highly motivated in understanding the society and analyze the social issues. They takepart in the social relevant activities vigorously. They participate in the blood donation camps, dengueawareness program, Swatch Bharat, Abhiyan, Karuvela tree Cutting, and World Environmental day. Theyalso participate in tree plantation program, World Water awareness Marathon, Tobacco awarenessprogram, World AIDS Day, Flood relief camps.

Technical competition participation and learning is the crown of CIT in learning process. The main drivingforce for this comes from the Concept of the Day. The present scenario gives many opportunities for thestudents to showcase their talents and innovations in many competitions at state, national and internationallevel. They develop the products and startups that are relevant to social and technical importance. Manystudents have participated in the Smart India Hackathon, Baja, e-Baja, e-Vehicle, Automated GuidedVehicle, World Skill Competition, Code Vita, Code Thantra, and Code Gladiator. In most of thesecompetitions, CIT students won the prizes which demonstrates their skill and technical preparedness.

CIT students’ showed better performance in the academics. It can be envisaged from CITs last 4-years

record performance. In 2015, the institute stood at 67th position in its academic performance ranked by theAnna University, to which CIT is affiliated. In 2016 and 2017 it climbed into 42nd and 25th positions, andachieved 9th position in 2018, which is an extraordinary achievement by any other institutions in a shortperiod of time.

6. Problems Encountered and Resources Required

Even though CIT gives prime importance for the prayer song, there is still much bettercommunication platform is needed from the student point of view. Because these days they enjoy all thepublicly shared information very easily. In order help their mindset, there is a need to share the genderawareness, women safety, patriotic thoughts wherever possible. The students are actively participating inthe social events described above. But, there is some support is required though the NGO/GO for theirsmooth functioning/organizing the events successfully. Presently, CIT is supporting for all these events andthere is a need to support passion and service minds of the students to the next level.

There was a difficulty in converting students research ideas and their projects into researchpublications/patents. From this year onwards, we have changed the scenario. Every faculty with researchspecialization and evidence of success will be grouped with the faculties as per their research interests. Thestudents research problems will be discussed by these group of faculties and research works will beassigned to the students. These students will execute their research work under the mentoring and guidanceof these group of faculties. The experiments and results are closely followed by the faculties and it will beconsolidated and written as research articles. The elaborated research article will be the research project forthe students as per the University regulations. This way we can introduce the students to pursue research ascareer and will result in the sustainable growth of CIT in the near future.

“An Engineer is a solution provider to the problems of the mankind bringing him a balanced life; whichhas social impact; bring development to the nation, at an affordable cost and without creating any harm tothe environment”. This is CIT chairman Mr. P. SRIRAM’s view on an Engineer. During his journey as anindustrialist, he noticed sheer lack of talent and skills among the graduates who couldn't meet the industryexpectation, which ignited his mind to setup a finishing school program for the graduates. It brainstormshis idea and he went on to establish Chennai Institute of Technology (CIT), an Engineering collegeaffiliated to Anna University and approved by AICTE, New Delhi in the year 2010. Having hugeproportion of youth population in India, he believed in providing a platform and motivating the youths to

acquire strong skills along with the knowledge to create an innovative and interactive environment forhuman beings.

The Vision and priority of Chennai Institute of Technology gives utmost importance for students,their education, training, skill development and successful career. The uniqueness of CIT starts with itsextraordinary performance in the admissions. In 2018 admission alone, it succeeded the highest admissionscore of 199.5. Around 22 students were admitted with above 195 admission score. Around 280 studentswere admitted with the admission score range of 180-190, which is the peak achievement as compared toany other institution in a short span of time.

After the admissions, the students are offered with high quality education and training with qualifiedfaculty members. Their roadmap of success starts with Funjinia, a workshop that’s organized right aftertheir HS exams, motivates and paved way to their higher education and research. As fresh students, theyparticipate in CITCOS, CIT-science exhibition and Catapult-bridge course in order to bridge the gapbetween the school and professional education. The highlight of CIT students is, they have to undergo anumber of training programs like, language training, self-learning, learning through competitions, Industryconnect, international collaborations, Innovative learning programs and ends with a successful career.

CIT chairman Mr. P. Sriram proved his intellectual and academic capability by establishingInnovative Learning Program (ILP) center within the campus. ILP has differentiated the teaching learningprocess and its environment by incorporating more practical sessions and involvement of students invarious technical and non-technical activities to realize their skills, talents and passion. ILP platform hasbeen created for students to interact with Industry, engage in Industrial Projects and consultancy works, gettrained on Industry tool, engage in Research and Innovation, & become a fulfilled Engineers orEntrepreneurs. CIT ranked eleventh among all engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University, Chennai as per theApril 2019 academic performance. The academic excellence is due to our innovative and industry connectedlearning programs. The learning process of our students starts with the Funjinia, CATAPULT and CITCOS thatdrives them into the world of engineering and technology. CIT strives for the development of engineers withsocietal commitment and responsible citizens of the country. Our learning programs starts with regularacademics with greater emphasis on foreign language training, self-learning, industry connectivity, internationalcollaborations.
