In a world exclusive, Dean Street will host a reunion of Woody Herman’s ‘Four Brothers’ in six shows from Thursday 12 September to Sunday 15 September. The group first presented itself with the four saxophonists (Stan Getz, Herbie Steward, Zoot Sims, Serge Chaloff) in 1947 earning them the nickname ‘Four Brothers’ taken from their hit of the same name. Many of the most famous Woody Herman hits were written with the four saxes in mind. Herman carried on leading his orchestra until his death in 1987, and the band has continued under the leadership of Frank Tiberi, who first joined in 1969. The ‘Four Brothers’ Reunion shows at PizzaExpress Jazz Club will feature four Woody Herman alumni, including Tiberi, baritone saxophonist Mike Brignola (who has been with the Woody Herman Orchestra for nearly 40 years), Dave Riekenberg (who is a third of the ‘four brothers’ in the last version of the band that Herman led himself), and then John Nugent (who joined the orchestra shortly after Herman’s death. John is now better known as the director of Rochester International Jazz Festival). They will perform with the James Pearson Trio. £35
