Hello Everyone,
Welcome to the August Edi7on of the “Steel Guitar Rag”. I hope you are all enjoying good health and a wonderful summer.
I would like to thank our editor, Bill Tauson, for providing us with the finest newsleHer in all of the southwest. Also, thanks to John McClung, “Mr. Twang”, for his great ar7cles in the “E9 Grab Bag” sec7on. Ron Pruter, also provides us with loads of informa7on on the care and maintenance of your guitar on the “Ax Ron” sec7on.
The board of directors has begun making all the necessary arrangements for the 2017 show. The band and many of the main players have already been confirmed. The proposed players schedule has not been completed yet and probably will not be available un7l some7me later in the year. We will try to post this informa7on prior to show date. We have scheduled 3 (three) pedal steel guitar classes and 1 (one) non pedal class for this year’s event. Steve Palousek & Larry Toliver, Jody Cameron, and Kevin Ryan will be presen7ng the Pedal Steel Guitar classes and Chuck LeHes will do the non-‐pedal class. These guys are all great players and excellent teachers, so be sure to take advantage of this opportunity. Dates and 7mes will be posted well in advance for your convenience.
We s7ll have a vendor room and several vendor tables available. If you know of anyone that might be interested have them contact one of the board members and we will provide the necessary informa7on. If you are interested in adver7sing in the Program book, that informa7on will be posted in the newsleHer or call any one of the board members.
If you would like to volunteer to help with the show, it would be greatly appreciated. We will be needing stage hands to help move guitars and amps on and off the bandstand. Peggy will also need volunteers with the front desk.
Our Fall Jam has been scheduled for November 12th. from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 P.M., at the Mesa Hilton, 1011 W Holmes, Mesa. Hope to see you there!
I wish you all a safe and enjoyable rest of the summer. Thank you for your con7nued support of SWSGA and the steel guitar.
Troy Porter, Chairman

Ax Ron ??????? By Ron Pruter
Welcome to my August addition of this fine publication. I want to do my part to promote thiswonderful instrument. Please Email me at [email protected] and I’ll try to answer your questions, as space allows.
This month I'm going to talk about one of the two types of compensators.
The Zum manual calls one pedal activated and the other body mounted. I'll be talking about the pedal activated compensator. They are basically just extra pulls, which include a pull rod, and tuning nut and, in some cases, an extra bell crank. You'll also need a modern enough changer that will have some extra holes for these new rods. This is one reason I favor a three raise, three lower changer but honestly, I've never had a problem installing these compensators in a three and two changer. BTW, I am talking about an all pull system here. I'll now try to lay out some reasons to add these comps. Kind of technical stuff here but here I go. We all try to tune out annoying beats or just badtuning relationships on our guitars. The one most intolerable is when the root and fifth are out of tune. Or the root and fourth, which is the same interval going the other direction (inverted). Here are two of such examples that I compensate for on my guitar.
1) With your A and B pedals down at the third fret (Emmons), of course you have a C chord. Your fifth and tenth string are raised up to an E note. Most of us “sweeten” that note to the chord by tuning that E a little flat. With pedals down, play the fifth string. Let it ring then play first string. Those two notes you just played were an E and an A. The relationship between those two notes is the relationship I just mentioned that, to me anyway, is the most annoying.
The solution : Connect a pull rod to the cross shaft that is used to raise the fifth and tenth string to the lowering part of that changer finger that will slightly lower that first string. It is important that you connect to the bell crank as close to the cross shaft as possible to get the most leverage so you don't feel the added pull tension on the pedal. I've even drilled an additional hole in a bell crank as close as humanly possible.
Note ! The above scenario is, of course, true with the tenth and seventh string which is one octave lower than the above. On that same cross shaft I added another rod to lower theseventh string. It is common place to label these tuning nuts on their ends with a red or blackmarker to identify them.
2) With A pedal and F lever my third string and sixth string always seem flat. It's the same annoying interval. I fix it by raising them slightly the same way as above running the rods through a raise hole in the changer utilizing the F lever cross shaft. Keep On Steelin' Ax

Changing a Major chord to a dom7 on E9: Part 2
NATURALLY, AFTER SENDING last month’s colum into editor BillTauson it dawned on me I’d le! a few
things out. So here are more ways to play a dom7chord on the E9 neck, and a few tasty progres -sions going from the major through the Major 7to the dom7, or from the 17 chord to the 4 chord.
Last month I provided 19 examples for you."is month I add 10 more, with the numberingcontinuing from 20–29.
In particular, note Examples 25 and 26, verynice and simple ways to get a root note to climbdown to the b7 note.
I’m reprinting the copedent here so it’s easier tounderstand what’s going on without having to digout your July issue of the Steel Guitar Rag.
None of the alternate G lever changes are usedthis time around."e small triangle to the right of a chord name

Professor Twang’s E9 Grab Bag!
numbers on the tab are the scale degrees of eachnote, so you can study what changes you’re makingto each chord, and where.“Splits” are notes you achieve by combining apedal and lever that raise and lower the same string."ese examples are quite detailed and will require
some study on your part to understand and thenuse them. Take your time! Learn a bit at a time."e inclusion of the numbered scale degrees of
each note is designed to help you analyze andunderstand the structure of the chords shown.Knowing that isn’t totally necessary, you cancertainly play well and use chords without knowingtheir scale degree content, or even the names ofchords. But the more you understand the structureof chords you’re playing, the more adept you’ll beat modifying and morphing chords from one toanother, which is one key to developing a “#owing”style in your pedal steel playing.
