History of Civil Engineering

Engineering is one of the oldest profession in the world.

Around 2550 BC, imhotep, the first doccumented engineer,

built a famous stepped pyramid of King Zoser located in

Saqqarah

Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is the oldest of the main

diciplines of engineering. The first engineering

school, the National School of Bridges and

Highway in France, was opened in 1747. John

smeaton was the first person to actually call

himself a “Civil Engineer”. These civil engineers

built all type of structures, designed water-suply

and sewer systems, designed rail roads and

highways, and planned cities. In 1828 the world’s

first engineering society came into being, the

institution of Civil Engineers in England

Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical engineering is a dicipline of civil

engineering that deals with soil, rock and

underground water, and their relation to design,

contruction and operation of engineering project,

ground engineering or geotechnics as it is related to

engineering geology

Nearly all civil engineering

Structure are supported on or built

Into the ground, and thus require at

least geotechnical engineering
