SEED Foundation moves onand strives at consolidatingits achievements whilepushing forward .

Ala in BarbierPresident

201 3 has been a tough year for Africa, and for ourEuropean countries as well. Yet SEED Foundationremained true to i ts mission. We kept pushing foragricultural development in Africa by supporting 3additional projects of great value. Also we are sti ll as convinced as ever thatinnovation is a key factor towards sustainabledevelopment and we ini tiated a method forcapitalizing on best practices. Our goal: collect, share and replicate in i tiatives or organizations thathave proven their efficiency on the field .Innovation can also be nurtured in our homecountry: one good example lies in sponsoring withskill-based sponsorship which we developed withour partner company Technisem. This complementsthe financing brought by our donators. Extrasupport can thus be provided at no extra cost whilerecognizing the very real skills of our ownpersonnel.I guess I made it very clear that I am truly proud ofour successes: in 201 3 SEED Foundation managedto raise more funds while lowering its operatingcosts, a performance not many Funds, even amongthe major ones, can match. This could only beachieved thanks to our founding members as wellas to our partners, companies as well as privateind ividuals to whom I am truly grateful. Bolsteredby their trust we are ready to meet new challengesand consider 201 4 with confidence.

CONTEXTIn Mozambique, 34% of the families are chronically in a situation of food insecurity partlybecause of the high and fluctuant prices on the global market. Urban agriculture is animportant activi ty in Maputo, the capital ci ty: i t represents 2.000 hectars and about20.000 families of vegetable producers.Unfortunatly, monoculture is the main method of production and chemical pesticidesare more and more used at the expense of the environment, the producers and theconsumer's health.

CORE OF THE PROJECTI t a ims at promoting the development of an "ecolog ical agricutlure" in Maputo with the support of local State enti ties (City Halland the Ministry of Agriculture) the producers and their organization. The project includes the reinforcement of their technicalski lls, experimentations in the fields, new selling techniques and the elaboration of a certi fication for the sector through thecreation of a label.

Développement d'une filière maraîchage agro-écologique

Country: Burkina Faso

Partner: SOS Sahel France

Local partner: SOS Sahel Burkina Faso

Duration: july 201 2 - june 201 5

CONTEXTIn the Gnagna area in the East of Burkina Faso, the majori ty of the populationlives off agriculture and livestock farming. However small, farmers are very isolated and are confronted to numerousobstacles that hinder their productivi ty: irregular rain , poor control on water, deterioration of natural resources and exhaustion on soils, d i fficult access tocredit and financial support.

CORE OF THE PROJECTThe project a ims at guid ing farmers throughout the whole production, transformation and commercialization process:- access to inputs (seeds, food for livestock,…) ,- technical livestock train ing and preservation and rehabili tation of naturalresources train ing ,- making concrete use of this new knowledge on experimental fields,- transformation of crops through the implementation of a multi functionalplatform,- access to a warrant system (form of credit on crop stock) ,- d iversification of sales channels.

ANTICIPATED RESULTS- An improvement in the nourishment of the population and a global increase ofrevenue for the 8200 small producers targeted and their family,- Consolidate the local structures that support farmers.

ANTICIPATED RESULTS- An increase in revenue forthe 300 producers of the"ecolog ical agriculture"sector ;- New skills for the 24techicians of the publicenti ti tes ;- Quali ty products on localmarkets at accessible prices.

CONTEXTThe rural community of Boussé near Ouagadougou highly depends on agriculture as anincome source. Every family has a complementary livestock breeding activi ty to meetthe high demand of the capital ci ty.Traditionally this activi ty is handled by women but the sector suffers from their limitedtechnical knowledge and the insufficient financial support they receive. This translatesinto high chick mortali ty, lack of access to medical services for livestock and low powerof negotiation and commercialization.

CORE OF THE PROJECTThe project a ims at creating an ESOP (a structure that offers services to producers) toassist in the production of chicks and in their monitoring over their first month (themost delicate phase) .Those quali ty chicks are then sold on credit to the women who will then handle theirbreeding for 3 months. The ESOP will be in charge of selling the poultry production on the market inOuagadougou and will offer attractive prices to the producers. I t will also offer themtrain ing and guide them through the whole process.

ANTICIPATED RESULTS- Increase in income and better source of nourishment to the 500 persons thatrepresent the members of the producer’s family- Creation of jobs within the ESOP.

INTERVIEW WITH TECHNISEM'SEMPLOYEES

What was the reason for your visit at theTremplin, where our Senegalese partnerhas set up a project for the professionalrehabilitation of young adults throughorganic farming?"First, we wanted to grasp a betterunderstanding of the place, i ts generalorganization, i ts history, etc. Then wevisi ted plots of vegetable crops, sawinstallations and offered a refreshed pointof view on the management of theirfarming actions."

What did you think of the visit?" I t was very interesting and necessary toclearly understand the project in order tooffer relevant advice and ideas."

What skills have you provided them with?"The identi fication of d iseases in openfields, advice on varieties to use dependingon the season and on constraints specificto local fields."

SETTING UP THE MISSIONVillage Pilote is a Senegalese association supported by SEEDFoundation for i ts project a iming at the «professional rehabili tationof young adults through organic farming».

When the project was completed in 201 3, SEED Foundation andVillage Pilote reflected on a way to consolidate the actions ofagricultural development even though the Senegalese associationhad few technical, human and financial means.

Around the same time, some employees at Technisem, a companyspecialized in producing and marketing seeds for tropical areas, expressed interest in getting their personnel actively involved inSEED Foundation's actions. Therefore SEED offered them the opportunity to apply theirexpertise in the field of agriculture, agronomics, livestock farmingand environmentally friendly techniques. While on their businesstrips to Senegal, they bought help to Village Pilote on needs theyhad jointly identi fied .
