The monumental Völkerschlachtdenkmal

Amongst the most imposing new buildings to have emerged since German Reunification is undoubtedly the Museum of Fine Arts that found its home at the heart of Leipzig‘s old town centre. Art from Leipzig itself provides, as is to be expected, a central section of the museum‘s collection. It includes, of course, works by artists of the “New Leipzig School”, one of the most famous exponents of which is Neo Rauch. Since 1994, he has worked at the Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei (former wool spinning mill), which has today, with its numerous galleries and studios, long since become a Mecca for art lovers.

9 October 1989 is arguably the most important date in modern German history: a memorable day, which heralded, in Leipzig, the end of the GDR regime. At the time, more than 70,000 of the city‘s inhabitants assembled in a mass demonstration, stretching from St. Nicholas Church to the inner city ring road. The Peaceful Revolution is the memorable event, which led, finally, to the fall of the Berlin Wall and to German Reunification.

Leipzig is a lively European Metropolis – cosmopolitan and friendly. This city, with its rich tradition as a centre of trade and as a university town, is now animated by a new economic dynamism, represented by such famousnames as Porsche, BMW and DHL. It is a city on the up, which not only offers its visitors a large number of sights and attractions to delight them, but also has its own unmistakable charm.

Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the most important composers in the history of music, lived and worked in Leipzig for almost three decades. You find reminders of him all over the city, with the most striking being the Thomaskirche where he was cantor. The famous“Thomanerchor” choir still, to this day, presents a living reminder of Bach’s great art and is not to be missed.

The prince of German poets, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, very much enjoyed the student life in Leipzig inhis time. We are reminded of this, too, in the literary memorial to Auerbachs Keller, one of the oldest taverns in the university town, which he worked into his masterpiece “Faust”.

LEIPZIG – PULSATING METROPOLIS AT THE HEART OF EUROPEISRP is the major international conference on ruminant physiology. It provides an overview of current, important scientific findings and areas of research in the physiology of ruminants of all kinds.
